A magnetic solid phase extraction procedure for Pb(II) at trace levels on magnetic Luffa@TiO2 in food and water samples

Pattern recognition of multiple metal ions using fluorescent Perylenyl nanoaggregates and application in food traceability

Metal ions (MIs) identification is essential for the safety assessment, traceability and authentication of food. Most current approaches for detecting MIs are difficult to reconcile the simplicity, sensitivity and stability simultaneously. In this work, we proposed a novel strategy for discriminating MIs based on fluorescent supramolecular nanoaggregates (SNAs). In the presence of MI, perylene diimide derivatives (PDI)-based SNAs could be formed through the multiple non-covalent interactions between them including electrostatic, coordination and π-π interactions. With the assistance of discriminant analysis (LDA), different MIs (Hg2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Cu2+ and Pb2+) were successfully identified at three different concentration levels. It featured good quantitative sensing abilities in buffer solutions and practical samples. Furthermore, a water-quality evaluation model was successfully constructed for the distinction of different sources of drinking water, and the fluorescence array sensor technology was applied for the first time to the geographical traceability of apples.

Novel pillar[n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles: Preparation and application in quantitative analysis of trace perfluorinated compounds from aqueous samples

BACKGROUND

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a class of widely manufactured and used emerging persistent pollutants. The recent discovered new class of macrocycles pillararenes have garnered significant attention for the applications in environmental pollutant adsorption, with abundant π electron cavities, a symmetrical rigid structure, and host-guest recognition capabilities.

RESULTS

In this work, we designed and synthesized novel cationic pillar [n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles (CWPA5@MNPs), and investigated its adsorption performance and mechanism as a type of new adsorbent for the enrichment of PFCs. The results indicate that CWPA5@MNPs exhibits selectively strong affinity for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and long-chain (C9-C14) perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), with the adsorption efficiency exceeding 80 % within 12 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of CWPA5@MNPs for PFOS was measured to be 29.02 mg/g. CWPA5@MNPs can be rapidly isolated from the solution using external magnets, offering a quick and easy separation. Consequently, this study established a CWPA5@MNPs-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (CWPA5@MNPs-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS) method for the rapid detection of trace levels of PFCs in environmental water samples. The analysis of 7 PFCs yielded recovery rates ranging from 86.1 % to 107.5 %, with intraday and interday relative standard deviations (RSD) of 3.6-6.4 % and 1.3-7.0 %, respectively.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

The study reveals the synthesis and application of novel cationic pillar [n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles (CWPA5@MNPs) as highly efficient adsorbents for selective perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in water samples. It demonstrates the potential of the newly developed CWPA5@MNPs-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS method for the quantitative analysis of PFCs in environment, with high sensitivity, accuracy and stability.

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μSPE) of nickel on activated nanodiamonds@Bi2WO6 nanocomposite from water and food samples

This study presents an original nano-sorbent using activated nanodiamonds@Bi2WO6 to separate and enrich nickel ions from water and food samples. FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, FE-SEM-EDX, EDS-TEAM, TGA, and BET were used to characterize the nanocomposite. It has a large surface area, active functional groups, and better reactivity. Ni(II) ions were determined as Ni(II)-PADAP chelates using UV-VIS spectroscopy. The parameters were studied and optimized, including pH (6), eluent type and volume (1 mL), ligand quantity (10 μg), sorbent dosage (20 mg), and contact time (1 min). The method has a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.6 μg L-1, a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 5.3 μg L-1, a relative standard deviation of 4.5%, and a preconcentration factor of 10. The method was validated by applying to certified reference materials (BCR estuarine water 505 and 1573a NIST). The method was successfully applied to tap waters, industrial waste waters, and vegetables.

Determination of capsaicin at trace levels in different food, biological and environmental samples by quadruple isotope dilution-gas chromatography mass spectrometry after its preconcentration

Despite the therapeutic properties of capsaicin for some diseases, it shows some side effects for human health. The goal of this study was to develop a precise and accurate analytical strategy for the trace determination of capsaicin in different food, biological and environmental samples including pepper, saliva and wastewater by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after spraying-based fine droplet formation-liquid phase microextraction (SFDF-LPME) and quadruple isotope dilution (ID4) method. Acetic anhydride was used as derivatizing agent, and the extraction method was used to enrich the analyte derivative to reach low detection limits. Under the optimum conditions, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were determined to be 0.33 and 1.10 µg/kg, respectively. Percent recoveries calculated for SFDF-LPME-GC-MS method ranged between 84.1 and 131.7 %. After the application of ID4-SFDF-LPME-GC-MS method, percent recoveries were obtained in the range of 94.9 and 104.0 % (%RSD ≤ 2.8) for the selected samples. It is obvious that the isotope dilution-based method provided high accurate and precise results due to the elimination of errors during the derivatization, extraction and measurement steps.

Carboxylated nanodiamonds@CuAl2O4@TiO2 nanocomposite for the dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of nickel at trace levels from food samples

Heavy metal pollution poses a significant health risk, necessitating regular environmental monitoring for public safety. Elevated nickel concentrations can disrupt ecosystems and impact human health. This study presents a nano-sorbent can be used for dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of nickel. The nano-sorbent was characterized using FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, BET, and BJH. It demonstrated remarkable efficiency due to its nanoscale properties, optimizing results in exceptional extraction performance with minimal interference from common ions. A flame atomic absorption spectrometer was utilized for all measurements. It has a low LOD (0.29 μg L-1) and RSDs% (7.3 % and 6 % intra-day and inter-day, respectively), minimal variation, and a precisely accurate correlation (0.997). It can be used on black tea, green tea, carrots, coffee beans, tuna fish, herring fish, tobacco, soil, natural water, and wastewater samples. The accuracy of the method was assessed by analyzing TMDA-64.3 fortified water and NIST 1573a tomato leaves certified reference materials.

Micro solid phase extraction of lead and cadmium using functionalized nanodiamonds@CuAl2O4@HKUST-1 nanocomposite for FAAS analysis in food and water samples

This study focuses on the development and application of a novel nanocomposite (functionalized nanodiamonds@CuAl2O4@HKUST-1)-based µ-SPE method for the sensitive and selective extraction of Pb and Cd from food and water samples. The technique offers high sensitivity and selectivity, allowing accurate measurement of these metals at trace levels. The detection limit is 0.031 µg kg-1 for Cd and 0.052 µg kg-1 for Pb, with a relative standard deviation of 1.7 % for Cd and 4.8 % for Pb. The method was successfully applied to real samples and efficiently quantified Pb and Cd in food and natural water samples. The highest concentrations were found in red lentils (0.274 µg kg-1 Pb) and fresh mint (0.197 µg kg-1Cd), but still below recommended limits set by FAO/WHO (300 µg kg-1 for Pb and 200 µg kg-1 for Cd). It promises to ensure food safety, monitor environmental contamination, and informs regulatory decisions to protect public health.

Functionalized magnetic nanomaterials as recyclable adsorbents for efficient flavonoid enrichment in Scutellaria Radix

A magnetic composite (Fe3O4@SiO2@PNIPAM-co-NHMA) with high adsorption capacity and recoverability was developed for the enrichment and determination of flavonoids in Scutellaria Radix (SR). A magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technique using Fe3O4@SiO2@PNIPAM-co-NHMA absorbent in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed for selectively enrichment and determination of the biologically active flavonoids in the aqueous extract of SR, including baicalein, baicalin, wogonoside and wogonin. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the magnetic adsorbent could adsorb up to 77.0 ± 0.98 % - 98.15 ± 0.15 % of four representative flavonoids from SR, with elution rates varying from 55.10 ± 0.25 % to 91.94 ± 1.85 %. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.01-0.35 μg/mL and 0.03-0.98 μg/mL, respectively. In addition, it remained effective after six replicates, demonstrating its potential as a recoverable adsorbent for enriching flavonoids in traditional Chinese medicine.

CRISPR/Cas12a-derived ratiometric fluorescence sensor for high-sensitive Pb2+ detection based on CDs@ZIF-8 and DNAzyme

Benefiting from specific target recognition and trans-cleavage capabilities, the CRISPR/Cas12a system has great application prospects in the design of highly sensitive and rapid fluorescence biosensors. The CRISPR/Cas12a-based fluorophore-quencher molecular beacons exhibit single-color emission and are easily exposed to interference from environmental factors. Herein, we design a CRISPR/Cas12a-derived ratiometric fluorescence sensor for Pb2+ detection based on embedded carbon dots@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (CDs@ZIF-8) composites and DNAzyme. The functions of ZIF-8 about encapsulating red emissive CDs in the inner cavity and adsorbing DNA on the outer surface are integrated to establish dual fluorescence signals, thereby reducing the possibility of interference and improving sensing accuracy. The presence of Pb2+ is converted into the change of activator by the GR5 DNAzyme to activate the CRISPR/Cas12a system, which provides signal amplification through multiple turnovers of side branch cutting, achieving highly sensitive detection of Pb2+ with a low detection limit of 18 pM. This method has the advantages of simplicity, universality, and excellent quantitative ability, and has broad prospects in sensing applications.

The application progress of magnetic solid-phase extraction for heavy metal analysis in food: a mini review

The emerging sample pretreatment technique of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has drawn the attention of researchers owing to its advantages of less reagent consumption, fast separation/enrichment process, high adsorption capacity, and simple operation. This paper presents a review of synthesis techniques, classification, and analysis procedures for MSPE in the detection of heavy metals in food. Magnetic adsorbents derived from silica, metal oxides, carbon, polymers, etc., are applied for the detection of heavy metals in food. Then, the recent development of the technology of MSPE for the analysis of heavy metal extraction in food is summarized in detail. Finally, the future outlook for the improvement of MSPE is also discussed.
