Abstract
Metconazole (MEZ) is a novel chiral triazole fungicide that is widely used to prevent and control soil-borne fungal pathogens and other fungal diseases. However, it has a long half-life in aquatic environments and thus poses potential environmental risks. This study evaluates the acute and stereoselective cardiotoxicity of MEZ in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. In addition, transcriptomics, real-time quantitative PCR, enzyme activity determination, and molecular docking are performed to evaluate the molecular mechanisms underlying the cardiotoxicity of MEZ in zebrafish. MEZ decreases the heart rate while increasing the pericardial oedema rate; additionally, it induces stereoselective cardiotoxicity. 1S,5S-MEZ exhibits stronger cardiotoxicity than 1R,5R-MEZ. Furthermore, MEZ increases the expression of Ahr-associated genes and the transcription factors il6st, il1b, and AP-1. Heart development-related genes, including fbn2b, rbm24b, and tbx20 are differentially expressed. MEZ administration alters the activities of catalase, peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase in zebrafish larvae. Molecular docking indicates that 1R,5R-MEZ binds more strongly to the inhibitor-binding sites of p38 in the AGE-RAGE signalling pathway than to other MEZ enantiomers. Studies conducted in vivo and in silico have established the enantioselective cardiotoxicity of MEZ and its underlying mechanisms, highlighting the need to evaluate the environmental risk of chiral MEZ in aquatic organisms at the enantiomeric level.

Abstract
Sustainable beer production requires a comprehensive assessment of potential hazards such as pesticides in both the finished product and waste streams, as these streams can be used to create high-value by-products. This study presents the tracking of 13 fungicides (azoxystrobin, boscalid, epoxiconazole, fenpropidin, fenpropimorph, fluquiconazole, flutriafol, fluxapyroxad, kresoxym-methyl, spiroxamine, propiconazole, prothioconazole-desthio, and tebuconazole), two insecticides (chlorpyrifos-methyl and deltamethrin), one herbicide (glyphosate), and one growth regulator (mepiquat) through the beer brewing process. Field-treated rye, wheat, and barley samples containing pesticide residues were used as adjunct during brewing. Samples of the beer as well as the by-products (spent grain, spent hops, trub and spent yeast) were collected and extracted with a modified QuEChERS method for pesticide residues analysis using GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. Results show that an average of 58% of pesticide residues are retrieved in the by-products with the highest fraction (53%) recovered in the spent grain, 4% in trub, 1% in spent hops, no residues detected in spent yeast and 9% in the beer. This is consistent with these nonpolar pesticides tending to remain adsorbed to the spent grain during brewing. Glyphosate and mepiquat, the most polar pesticides included in this study, showed a different behavior, with the largest fraction (>80%) being retrieved in sweet wort and transferred to the beer. Processing factors were generated for each pesticide from the adjunct to the beer and to the four by-products.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pesticide residues in animal feed can endanger animal health and compromise the safety of livestock products for human consumption. Even though policymakers such as the European Union and the World Health Organization have established maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides in both human food and animal feed, there is no systematic management of pesticides in animal feed that considers the entire supply chain. In response, we propose a framework for defining consistent MRLs for pesticides in animal feed that assesses the impact of defined MRLs on upstream (e.g., MRLs in feed crops) and downstream (e.g., MRLs in livestock products) sectors of the livestock-product supply chain. RESULTS The MRLs determined for the selected pesticides in the feed of cattle and sheep as case study animals indicate that lipophilic pesticides tend to have lower MRLs than hydrophilic pesticides, primarily due to the relatively high toxicity and biotransfer factors of lipophilic pesticides. In addition, we observe that, primarily for lipophilic pesticides, upstream and downstream regulations are not aligned in terms of defining MRLs in feed using current MRLs in crops with relevance to feed and foods of animal origin. CONCLUSION Some of the current pesticide regulations in the livestock-product supply chain need to be re-evaluated to ensure that MRLs in the upstream sector (i.e., crops) do not result in unacceptable residues in the downstream sector (i.e., MRLs in livestock products affecting animal and human health). Finally, we provide recommendations for optimizing the derivation of MRLs in feed, including the evaluation of residue fate during feed and food manufacturing processes. © 2022 The Authors. Abstract
To reduce human health risks and comply with regulatory standards, it is necessary to provide safe application rates of pesticides in crop fields. In this study, a screening-level model is proposed to improve the regulation of pesticide application rates based on the dynamiCrop platform, which can serve as a complementary approach to field trials for regulatory agencies. The screening-level model can conveniently simulate safe application rates of pesticides based on consumer health risks and maximum residue levels (MRLs). Using 2,4-D as an example, the simulation results agreed with the data of field trials under Good Agricultural Practices and demonstrated that current manufacturers' recommended application rates can effectively comply with MRLs and protect human health. In addition, we simulated the default safe application rates of 449 pesticides in five common crops using the default values of the acceptable daily intake (ADI; 0.01 mg kg-1 day-1 ) and MRL (0.01 mg kg-1 ). The results demonstrated that aerial-fruit crops (e.g., tomatoes and apples) had much lower default safe application rates of pesticides than tuber crops due to the different pesticide uptake mechanisms of plants. In addition, the MRL-based default safe application rates were significantly lower than the ADI-based default rates, indicating that the default MRL of 0.01 mg kg-1 adopted by current regulatory agencies is very conservative regarding population health risks. Although other factors, such as the variability of residue levels in crops, occupational exposure (farmers and operators), and multiple pesticide application patterns, need to be considered in future studies, our screening-level model could be used as a complementary tool in field trials to assist regulatory agencies in regulating pesticide application rates in crop fields. Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, metabolic products of pesticides have gained much attention due to their substantial characteristics as organic pollutants. So far, the behavior and metabolite levels of pesticide metabolites in crops have not been characterized well. In the present study, four registered pesticides (imidacloprid, diafenthiuron, malathion and chlorothalonil) were applied on tea plants in Fujian and Sichuan to characterize their metabolites residue pattern and dietary risk. RESULTS Four pesticides dissipated first-order kinetics in the fresh tea leaves with the half-lives of 1.4-3.8 days. Nine metabolites were detected in the fresh tea leaves and green tea after processing. The metabolites residues showed an increasing trend first and then declined after treatment, and reached the maximum near the half-lives of pesticide. Compared with the parent pesticide, the total residue and acute risk (included the metabolites) increased by 1.7-105.2 times. Some metabolites, especially those whose parent pesticides have high water solubility and low Log Kow, will be more easily transferred to tea infusion. CONCLUSION Pesticides were metabolized rapidly on tea plants after application, but the production of metabolites increased the health risk of tea consumption. These results could provide insights to use the pesticides in tea gardens and risk monitoring after application. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pesticide contamination in oil crops and processed products is an important food safety concern. The study was aimed to investigate the pesticide residue changes in press processing of peanut oil and frying of chips. RESULTS Five pesticides - chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, methoxyfenozide, azoxystrobin and propargite - which are often applied during growth period in peanut plants, were selected to investigate their residue changes in cold press processing of peanut oil and frying of potato chips. Results showed that the residues of the five pesticides were decreased by 3.1-42.6% during air-drying before oil pressing. The residues of chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, methoxyfenozide and propargite in peanut oil were 2.05-3.63 times higher than that in peanut meal after cold pressing of the oil, except for azoxystrobin having a slightly lower residue in peanut oil, with 0.92 times that in peanut meal. The processing factors of the five pesticides in peanut oil ranged from 1.17 to 2.73 and were highly related to the log Kow of the pesticides. The higher the log Kow , the more easily was the pesticide partitioned in the peanut oil. Besides, as frying time increase during preparation of chips, the concentration of pesticides in peanut oil decreased gradually by 6.7-22.1% compared to the first frying. In addition, 0.47-11.06% of the pesticides were transferred to the chips through frying with contaminated oil. CONCLUSION This is first report showing that pesticides can transfer from contaminated oil to chips. There exists a potential dietary health risk by using pesticide-contaminated oil for frying chips. This work could provide basic data for accurate dietary risk assessment of pesticide residues in peanut oil and its frying products. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The stereoselective behaviors of triadimefon (TF) and its metabolite triadimenol (TN) during barley storage and beer brewing were studied by supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to shed light on potential security risks. Matrix-matched calibration curves were constructed for barley and beer, with determination coefficients (r2) ≥ 0.9991. Average recoveries of 77.2-107.5 % and relative standard deviations within 15.0 % were observed. The degradation of the TF enantiomers during storage followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and S-TF was degraded in preference to R-TF with the half-life ranges 18.5-36.5 d and 20.4-69.3 d, respectively. During beer brewing, the TF enantiomers (enantiomer fraction, 0.44-0.56) were selectively metabolized into TN stereoisomers (diastereomer fraction, 0.43-0.58). The total pesticide content of beer was 93.3 % lower than that of raw grain, whereby the TF content declined by up to 100 % and the TN stereoisomers were reduced by 35.1 %. The processing factors of all the brewing steps were less than one, illustrating that beer consumption is safer after its commercial processing. Furthermore, the TF enantiomers showed different behaviors upon fermentation by two yeast strains. Thus, this work is a useful reference for assessing the food safety risk posed by individual pesticide enantiomers and their contribution to environmental pollution.

Abstract
Prothioconazole is a fungicide that has been widely used in general agriculture and livestock husbandry. This study evaluated the acute toxicity of prothioconazole to zebrafish embryos by assessing their hatching rate and malformation when exposed to different concentrations of prothioconazole. The 96 h-LC50 value of zebrafish embryos was 1.70 mg/L. Upon exposure to 0.85 mg/L, the mortality rate of the embryos significantly increased while their hatching rate decreased significantly. At prothioconazole concentrations higher than 0.43 mg/L, developmental morphologic abnormalities such as heart and yolk-sac edema, spine curvature, tail deformity, shortened body length and decreased eye area were observed. The heart rate of embryos decreased in a dose-dependent fashion during the exposure time. Prothioconazole exposure also resulted in increased rates of cardiac malformation detected by significant increase in the distance between the sinus venosus and bulbus arteriosus and the pericardium area. Moreover, the expression levels of genes related to cardiac development (amhc, vmhc, fli1, hand2, gata4, nkx2.5, tbx5 and atp2a2a) were significantly altered after exposure to prothioconazole. Indeed, this study revealed the adverse effects on the developmental and cardiovascular system of zebrafish embryo caused by prothioconazole. It further elucidated the risk of prothioconazole exposure to vertebrate cardiovascular toxicity. As such, it provides a theoretical foundation for pesticide risk management measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Triadimefon is a fungicide used in agriculture to control fungal diseases such as sclerotinia sclerotiorum. RESULTS In field trials, rape plants were sprayed with triadimefon at three different dosages during the flowering period. The degradation of triadimefon and the residue levels of its metabolite, triadimenol, in rapeseed obtained from harvesting, storage, and household oil processing were traced and evaluated. The pesticides were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) at each processing step. Triadimefon degraded completely and only its metabolite, triadimenol, was detected in rapeseed after harvesting. The stability of triadimenol in rapeseed was studied at weekly storage intervals, from 0 to 7 weeks at ambient temperature (25 °C) and freezing temperature (-20 °C), respectively. Storage temperature had an important influence on the residue levels of triadimenol. The processing factor (PF) was defined as the ratio of pesticide residue levels in rapeseed to rapeseed oil levels during household oil processing. The average PF of triadimenol was about 0.96 for a hot pressing technique and 0.88 for a cold pressing technique. CONCLUSION Different storage conditions and food processing could reduce the pesticide level to a greater or lesser extent. However, it is not easy to eliminate or significantly weaken triadimenol once triadimefon has degraded completely. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
China is the largest cotton producer with the cotton output accounting for 25% of the total world's cotton production. A large quantity of cotton stalk (CS) waste is generated which is burned and causes environmental and ecological problems. This study investigated the anaerobic digestibility of CS by focusing on improving the methane yield by applying central composite design of response surface methodology (RSM). The purpose of this study was to determine the best level of factors to optimize the desired output of methane production from CS. Thus, it was necessary to describe the relationship of many individual variables with one or more response values for the effective utilization of CS. The influences of feed to inoculum (F/I) ratio and organic loading (OL) on methane production were investigated. Results showed that the experimental methane yield (EMY) and volatile solid (VS) removal were calculated to be 70.22 mL/gVS and 14.33% at F/I ratio of 0.79 and organic loading of 25.61 gVS/L, respectively. Characteristics of final effluent showed that the anaerobic system was stable. This research laid a foundation for future application of CS to alleviate the problems of waste pollution and energy output.

Abstract
The health risk of triadimefon (TF) to cardiovascular system of human is still unclear, especially to pesticide suicides population, occupational population (farmers, retailers and pharmaceutical workers), and special population (young children and infants, pregnant women, older people, and those with compromised immune systems) who are at a greater risk. Therefore, firstly we explored the toxic effects and possible mechanism of cardiovascular toxicity induced by TF using zebrafish model. Zebrafish at stage of 48 h post fertilization (hpf) exposed to TF for 24 h exhibited morphological malformations which were further confirmed by histopathologic examination, including pericardial edema, circulation abnormalities, serious venous thrombosis and increased distance between the sinus venosus (SV) and bulbus arteriosus (BA) regions of the heart. In addition to morphological changes, TF induced functional deficits in the heart of zebrafish, including bradycardia and a significant reduced cardiac output that became more serious at higher concentrations. To better understand the possible molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular toxicity in zebrafish, we investigated the transcriptional level of genes related to calcium signaling pathway and cardiac muscle contraction. Q-PCR (quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction) results demonstrated that the expression level of genes related to ATPase (atp2a1l, atp1b2b, atp1a3b), calcium channel (cacna1ab, cacna1da) and cardiac troponin C (tnnc1a) were significantly decreased after TF exposure. For the first time, the present study revealed that TF exposure had observable morphological and functional negative impacts on cardiovascular system of zebrafish. Mechanistically, this toxicity might result from the pressure of down-regulation of genes associated with calcium signaling pathway and cardiac muscle contraction following TF exposure. These findings generated here can provide information for better pesticide poisoning treatments, occupational disease prevention, and providing theoretical foundation for risk management measures.

Abstract
As the by-product of the vinegar production process, a large number of vinegar residue has been abandoned and caused a serious environmental pollution. Anaerobic digestion has been proved to be able to dispose and convert vinegar residue into bioenergy but still need to improve the efficiency. This study applied central composite design of response surface methodology to investigate the influences of feed to inoculum ratio, organic loading, and initial pH on methane production and optimize anaerobic digestion condition. The maximum methane yield of 203.91 mL gVS−1 and biodegradability of 46.99% were obtained at feed to inoculum ratio of 0.5, organic loading of 31.49 gVS L−1, and initial pH of 7.29, which was considered as the best condition. It has a very significant improvement of 69.48% for methane production and 52.02% for biodegradability compared with our previous study. Additionally, a high methane yield of 182.09 mL gVS−1 was obtained at feed to inoculum ratio of 1.5, organic loading of 46.22 gVS L−1, and initial pH of 7.32. And it is more appropriate to apply this condition in industrial application owing to the high feed to inoculum ratio and organic loading. Besides, a significant interaction was found between feed to inoculum ratio and organic loading. This study maximized the methane production of vinegar residue and made a good foundation for further study and future industrial application.

Abstract
Despite the fact that beer is produced on a large scale, the effects of pesticide residues on beer have been rarely investigated. In this study, we used micro-brewing settings to determine the effect of triadimefon on the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and beer flavor. The yeast growth in medium was significantly inhibited (45%) at concentrations higher than 5 mg L(-1), reaching 80% and 100% inhibition at 10 mg L(-1) and 50 mg L(-1), respectively. There were significant differences in sensory quality between beer samples fermented with and without triadimefon based on data obtained with an electronic tongue and nose. Such an effect was most likely underlain by changes in yeast fermentation activity, including decreased utilization of maltotriose and most amino acids, reduced production of isobutyl and isoamyl alcohols, and increased ethyl acetate content in the fungicide treated samples. Furthermore, yeast metabolic profiling by phenotype microarray and UPLC/TOF-MS showed that triadimefon caused significant changes in the metabolism of glutathione, phenylalanine and sphingolipids, and in sterol biosynthesis. Thus, triadimefon negatively affects beer sensory qualities by influencing the metabolic activity of S. cerevisiae during fermentation, emphasizing the necessity of stricter control over fungicide residues in brewing by the food industry.

Abstract
A novel approach to fabricate bleached shellac was established by totally chlorine-free (TCF) bleached process and a unique TCF bleached shellac, excellent material for food or medicine industry, was obtained firstly in alkaline condition.
