Abstract
A simple cascade process based on the hydrothermal fractionation of Ulva spp. biomass was proposed. Considering the overall extraction yields (50 %), ulvan recovery (23 %), and ulvan composition, structural, mechanical and cytotoxic properties, the selected optimal final heating temperature was 160 °C. Ethanol precipitation provided the highest ulvan recovery yields but choline chloride precipitated ulvans showed stronger mechanical properties, G´ moduli 1.5·104 Pa and 3·104 Pa for ethanol and for choline chloride, respectively. Both products were safe on NCTC 929 mouse fibroblasts and after a cooling stage, formed films without requiring any additives. From the ulvan-free liquid fraction, one product with 43 % (wt, d.b.) phenolics and moderate antiradical properties and a byproduct containing nutrients and minerals were separated. The methane potential of the corresponding residual solids was influenced by the hydrothermal heating temperature and was doubled compared to than for the untreated seaweed biomass (60 mL/g VS). This scheme could be also applied to the wet algal biomass, in a chemical free alternative to provide ready to use ulvan biopolymers, bioactives, nutrients, salts and biogas, conforming a biorefinery approach.

Abstract
Microwave hydrothermal treatment was selected to extract valuable fractions with bioactive and gelling properties from Evernia prunastri lichen with potential for topical applications. The impact of the extraction processing conditions on the soluble extracts, mucilage fraction and residual solid phase was analyzed within a lichen global valorization approach. A particular stress was made on the thermo-rheological and structural characteristics of the extracted glucan and galactomannan polymers, the corresponding gelled matrices, and their cosmetic feasibility. Results revealed that the proposed microwave-assisted treatment showed a relevant influence on the phytochemical features of the aqueous soluble extracts, accounting the major protein content at 120 °C and the enhanced antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase properties at 140 °C. Extracts at 200 °C showed the highest anti-inflammatory (COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition) efficacies. The biopolymer analyses indicated that those recovered after lichen hydrothermal treatment at 160 °C featured a good extraction performance, the highest molecular weight, apparent viscosity, and antiproliferative potential. The thermo-rheological properties of the corresponding matrices formulated at 10 % and 60 or 80 °C exhibited the strongest and most thermo-reversible characteristics, as well as antifreezing feasibility. Another advantage of the selected fractions was the absence of skin irritation according to the in vitro skin irritation assay.

Abstract
This work deals with the formulation of natural cosmetics enriched with antioxidant fractions from the ultrasound treatment (US) of the brown seaweed Saccharina latissima. The challenge was the development of a cosmetic matrix without jeopardizing the thermorheological features of the creams, adding microparticles containing the antioxidant fractions using two different carriers, mannitol and alginate. The fundamental chemical characteristics of seaweed and the extracts obtained via sonication, as well as the antioxidant properties of the latter, were analyzed. The highest TEAC (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) value was identified for the extracts subjected to the longest processing time using ultrasound-assisted extraction (240 min). A similar yield of microparticle formulation (around 60%) and load capacity (about 85%) were identified with mannitol and alginate as carriers. Color testing of the creams exhibited small total color differences. The rheological results indicated that the testing temperature, from 5 to 45 °C, notably influenced the apparent viscosity of the matrices. All creams were adequately fitted with the two parameters of the Ostwald-de Waele model, with the flow consistency index following an Arrhenius dependency with the testing temperature. Neither hysteresis nor water syneresis was observed in the proposed cosmetics during 6 months of cold storage at 4-6 °C.

Abstract
Introduction The urge of designing new safe and natural functional foods to control blood lipids and dispensable without the need of physician supervision, has increased especially after the coming into effect of the recent EU Commission regulation 2022/860, that regulates the consumption of "red yeast rice," made by fermentation of rice with Monascus purpureus, and perceived as a natural functional food, due to a health risk for frail consumers. The results of the present work are a part of the systematic study we are carrying out of the binding ability of some soluble dietary fibers (SDF) from different natural sources toward selected bile salts (BS). Methods Measurements were carried out by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) with the idea to shed light on the mechanism, if any, by which they show cholesterol-lowering activity. Results and discussion Epidemiological studies are sometimes conflicting and offer only hypothesis about the mechanism of action, the most accredited being the reduction of reabsorption of BS in the gut. Previous measurements done on negatively charged pectin and alginate, showed specific binding interaction with monomer NaDC for pectin and no interaction at all for alginate. Chitosan, positively charged and soluble only at low pH, in 100 mM acetate buffer at pH = 3 shows strong exothermic interactions with NaTC and NaTDC. Here we considered two plant exudates (Arabic gum and tragacanth gum) and guar gum, extracted from guar beans, and their interaction with the same bile salts. ITC measurements do not evidence specific interactions between gums and the studied BS, so that their cholesterol lowering ability, if any, is due to a different mechanism very probably bound to the viscosity increase. Moreover, the addition of NaC, the most abundant BS in the bile, at very low concentration (under the cmc) causes a structural change of the solution. The obtained results seem to corroborate the hypothesis that the cholesterol lowering activity is related to the increase in viscosity of guar solution favored by NaC, the major component of the bile.

Abstract
In this study, a new polysaccharide was isolated from Ocimum album L. seed (OA), and its physicochemical and rheological properties were investigated. Ocimum album polysaccharide (OAP) was an acidic heteropolysaccharide with a molecular weight of 1935 kDa, and it was composed of five types of sugars: mannose (32.95 %), glucose (27.57 %), galactose (19.29 %), rhamnose, (15.96 %) and galacturonic acid (4.23 %). According to the results obtained from Huggins and Kraemer equations, the intrinsic viscosity was 6.9 dL/g in distilled water. The OAP solutions at a concentration between 0.1 and 1.5 %, showed shear-thinning behavior, and the Herschel-Bulkley and Cross models exhibited a high ability to describe the flow behavior of OAP solutions. The apparent viscosity of 1 % OAP solution was decreased in the presence of different concentrations of NaCl (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 M), at different pHs (3-11), and in temperatures between 5 and 100 °C. Also, the pseudoplastic behavior was observed in all samples. In OAP solutions (0.1-1.5 %), the up and down curves in the shear stress-shear rate diagram did not coincide, which indicated time-dependent (thixotropic) behavior. Although, the thixotropic properties of 1 % OAP solution were weakened with adding NaCl (0.1-0.5 M) and at different pH (3-11). The results obtained from the dynamic oscillatory test showed that the OAP solutions at concentrations higher than 0.1 % had a gel-like behavior, and the viscoelastic moduli (G' and G″) were weakened in the presence of salt and with a change in pH. Also, in the temperature sweep test, the 1 % solution showed the behavior of thermally irreversible gels.

Abstract
One possible scheme of Rugulopteryx okamurae biomass valorization based on a green, rapid and efficient fractionation technique was proposed. Microwave-assisted pressurized hot water extraction was the technology selected as the initial stage for the solubilization of different seaweed components. Operation at 180 °C for 10 min with a 30 liquid-to-solid ratio solubilized more than 40% of the initial material. Both the alginate recovery yield (3.2%) and the phenolic content of the water-soluble extracts (2.3%) were slightly higher when distilled water was used as solvent. However, the carbohydrate content in the extract (60%) was similar for both solvents, but the sulfate content was higher for samples processed with salt water collected from the same coast as the seaweeds. The antiradical capacity of the extracts was related to the phenolic content in the extracts, but the cytotoxicity towards HeLa229 cancer cells was highest (EC50 = 48 µg/mL) for the extract obtained with distilled water at the lowest temperature evaluated. Operation time showed a relevant enhancement of the extraction performance and bioactive properties of the soluble extracts. The further fractionation and study of this extract would be recommended to extend its potential applications. However, due to the low extraction yield, emphasis was given to the solid residue, which showed a heating value in the range 16,102-18,413 kJ/kg and could be useful for the preparation of biomaterials according to its rheological properties.

Abstract
Several bioactive compounds that hold a potential interest in the food industry as phenolic compounds, polysaccharides, proteins and vitamins, among others, are present in seaweeds. Green extraction technologies are the preferred way to obtain these compounds. Pressurized hot water extraction, from 160 to 220 °C, was tested to achieve high yields of these components from the edible brown seaweed, Undaria pinnatifida. The maximum fucoidan content was recovered at 160 °C, while the phloroglucinol content and antioxidant activity were maximum at 220 °C. The possibility of encapsulating these bioactive fractions using mannitol was assessed. The highest production yield of the polymeric particles was found using the 220 °C fraction (close to 75%). In order to formulate microparticles with bioactive potential, several ratios of liquid phases were assessed, 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3 (w:w), using the liquid fractions obtained at 160 °C and 220 °C. The yield production was always above 67%, being in the 1:3 ratio (160 °C:220 °C) and close to 75%. The rheological results indicated that the presence of microparticles enhanced the apparent viscosity of the aqueous dispersions with non-Newtonian profiles, achieving the highest viscosity for those formulated with microparticles from 160 °C:200 °C (3:1).

Abstract
Tragacanth is an abundant natural gum extracted from wounds created in some plants and is dried for use in various applications from industry to biomedicines. It is a cost-effective and easily accessible polysaccharide with desirable biocompatibility and biodegradability, drawing much attention for use in new biomedical applications such as wound healing and tissue engineering. Moreover, this anionic polysaccharide with a highly branched structure has been used as an emulsifier and thickening agent in pharmaceutical applications. In the following, this gum has been interested as an appealing biomaterial for producing engineering tools in drug delivery. Furthermore, the biological properties of tragacanth gum have made it a favorable biomaterial in cell therapies, especially for bone tissue engineering. This review aims to discuss the recent studies on this natural gum as a potential carrier for different drugs and cells.

Abstract
The mitigation of wastewater exploiting biopolymers/natural gums-based composites is an appealing research theme in today's scenario. The following review presents a comprehensive description of the polysaccharides derived from biopolymers (chitosan, collagen, cellulose, starch, pectin, lignin, and alginate) and natural gums (guar, gellan, carrageenan, karaya, moringa oliefera, tragacanth, and xanthan gum). These biopolymers/natural gums-based composites depicted excellent surface functionality, non-toxicity, economic and environmental viability, which corroborated them as potential candidates in the decontamination process. The presence of -OH, -COOH, and -NH functional groups in their backbone rendered them tailorable for modification/functionalization, and anchor an array of pollutants via electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and Van der Waals forces. Further, due to these functional moieties, these bio-based composites revealed an excellent adsorption capacity than conventional adsorbents. This review provides an overview of the classification of biopolymers/natural gums based on their origin, different ways of their modification, and the remediation of dye-contaminated aqueous environments employing diverse bio-based adsorbents. The isotherm, kinetic modelling along with thermodynamics of the adsorption process is discussed. Additionally, the reusable efficacy of these bio-adsorbents is reviewed.

Abstract
Microwave-assisted hydrothermal processing was proposed to recover high valuable compounds with antioxidant and gelling features from Ulva spp. green seaweed. The influence of the extraction conditions on the solubles, ulvan fraction and residual solid phase was studied to achieve a global valorization of the seaweed. A particular emphasis was placed on the selective coagulation of ulvan stimulated by a bio-ionic liquid during the extraction process. The achieved outcomes indicated that the selected microwave treatment exhibited a notable impact on the phytochemical properties of the soluble extracts, with the highest values of sulfate and protein content at 160 °C, and the highest antioxidant features at 200 °C. The most prominent molecular weight distributions were also identified for systems hydrothermal treated at 160 °C. The ulvan analyses showed that those extracted after microwave treatment at 160 °C showed the highest yields, molecular weight and the strongest gel features from the rheological point of view. The presence of the chloride chlorine during the extraction process favored the ulvan performance and the enhancement of the corresponding viscoelastic properties.

Abstract
In this work, gum tragacanth (GT) was coated on the camellia oil body (OB) emulsions using an electrostatic deposition technique, and effects were investigated over a wide range of pH values, ionic strengths, temperatures, and freeze-thaw cycles. Special attention has been paid to the rheological features as a function of hydrocolloid concentration, thixotropy (hysteresis loop and in-shear structure recovery), temperature, and frequency. The electrostatic GT-OB surface protein interactions, confirmed by ζ-potential and confocal laser scanning microscopy measurements, led to the reduction of flocculation effects and enhancement of steric stabilization due to the adsorption of polysaccharides to OB surfaces. The activation energy values (Ea) appeared in the range of 21.92 to 8.02 kJ/mol at pH 4 as GT concentration increased from 0 to 1 wt%. The OBs are soft droplets with the degree of structure recovery (DSR) ranged from 0.451 to 0.533; however, GT coating showed synergistic effect on the DSR.

Abstract
Tea industry generates many by-products which could be used to produce and incorporate bioactive tea extracts (TE) into nutraceuticals, cosmetics and/or clinical applications. However, sensibility to external factors is a major disadvantage hindering its utilization. This study deals with the implementation and characterization of suitable biopolymer delivery systems based on starch, carrageenan or alginate, as microencapsulation, to stabilize and protect TE through innovative thin-carbohydrate-coated formulations. TE were spray-dried and microencapsulated in recycled carrier materials (alginate, carrageenan or starch). Product yields varied from 55 to 58%. High microencapsulation and loading efficiencies were achieved (60-93% and 65-84%, respectively). Antioxidant capacity varied from 32 to 46 g Trolox/100 g extract, within different carrier-systems; which also showed promising rheological and UV-protective properties when transformed into gels. Total phenolic content, particle-size distribution, HPSEC-analysis, SEM-analysis and FTIR-analysis were also performed. In sum, this paper characterizes and discusses the high potential of these recycled carbohydrate-coated microparticles for future applications.

Abstract
The use of naturally occurring materials in biomedicine has been increasingly attracting the researchers’ interest and, in this regard, gum tragacanth (GT) is recently showing great promise as a therapeutic substance in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. As a polysaccharide, GT can be easily extracted from the stems and branches of various species of Astragalus. This anionic polymer is known to be a biodegradable, non-allergenic, non-toxic, and non-carcinogenic material. The stability against microbial, heat and acid degradation has made GT an attractive material not only in industrial settings (e.g., food packaging) but also in biomedical approaches (e.g., drug delivery). Over time, GT has been shown to be a useful reagent in the formation and stabilization of metal nanoparticles in the context of green chemistry. With the advent of tissue engineering, GT has also been utilized for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds applied for both hard and soft tissue healing strategies. However, more research is needed for defining GT applicability in the future of biomedical engineering. On this object, the present review aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of GT in biomedicine and tries to open new horizons in the field based on its inherent characteristics.

Abstract
Cell growth and product formation are two critical processes in polysaccharide welan biosynthesis, but the conflict between them is often encountered. In this study, a temperature-dependent strategy was designed for two-stage welan production through overexpressing heat shock proteins in Sphingomonas sp. The first stage was cell growth phase with higher TCA cycle activity at 42 °C; the second stage was welan formation phase with higher precursor synthesis pathway activity at 37 °C. The highest welan concentration 37.5 g/L was achieved after two-stage process. Ultimately, this strategy accumulated welan yield of 79.2 g/100 g glucose and productivity of 0.62 g/L/h at 60 h, which were the best reported results so far. The duration of fermentation was shortened. Besides, rheological behavior of welan gum solutions remained stable at wide range of temperature, pH, and NaCl. These results indicated that this approach efficiently improved welan synthesis.

Abstract
AbstractEffects of addition of octenyl succinate anhydride (OSA) starch on the structural, rheological and thermo-rheological properties of aqueous solutions of 0.5 (w/v %) xanthan gum were evaluated. Analysis by dynamic light scattering revealed the absence of complex formation in the mixed solution. However, it was noticed that an increase in the concentration of OSA starch (COSA) leads simultaneously to an increase of the number of micelles and their self-assembly within the network formed by the xanthan macromolecules. This same mechanism was observed during the evaluation of the rheological properties. For systems containing 0.5 (w/v %) of xanthan and for which COSA ≤ 4 (w/v %), a thermoreversible behavior was found similar to that of xanthan in solution. Furthermore, for COSA ≥ 5 (w/v %), the rheological behavior remained indifferent to the increase in temperature but, scored a spectacular rise in storage modulus when the cooling temperature begins near 70 °C.

Abstract
The natural polymer Tragacanth Gum is less explored as a supporting matrix, there are very less studies conducted using this polymer in literature. So the present study aims to explore the consequences of different weight percent (wt.%) of gallic acid (GA) on physicochemical properties of Poly (vinyl alcohol)/Tragacanth Gum blend films. The incorporation of GA resulted in more strengthened but less flexible films as confirmed by tensile tests. DSC studies confirmed the miscibility of composite films in the given composition range and TGA studies revealed increased thermal stability. The morphological studies revealed a homogeneous distribution of GA at lower wt.% in the blend system. X-Ray Diffraction study depicted; the added GA lost crystalline structure after incorporating it into the blend. The Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) was improved after the incorporation of GA into the blend system. Overall migration studies revealed the limited release of GA from the matrix into food simulants. Soil degradation rate increased as the wt.% of GA increased. The composite films presented strong antioxidant activity; therefore, prepared composite films could be used as an alternative to current packaging materials.

Abstract
Drag reduction by the addition of polymer additives has been widely studied. However, there are only a few studies on binary polymer mixtures, here named blends. In this work, xanthan gum, polyacrylamide and poly(ethylene oxide) were associated with guar gum and drag reduction was used as a parameter to determine the synergistic interaction between polymers. The aim was to verify the relation of the synergy with the rigidity of the polymeric chains, the molecular weights and the magnitude of the molecular interactions between the studied polymers. To that end, several ratios of mixtures were tested at different Reynolds numbers in a rotational rheometer with double-gap concentric cylinders geometry. Finally, experiments were done to verify the behaviour of the blends over time at a fixed Reynolds number. From all these tests, it was documented that blends containing rigid chain polymers show positive synergism in the interaction in at least one of the ratios and that this interaction is more pronounced when the molecular weights are closer and intermolecular forces are stronger. It was also noted that, in general, blends are great substitutes for solutions containing only one type of polymer.

Abstract
Natural polymers have distinct advantages over synthetic polymers because of their abundance, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Tragacanth gum, an anionic polysaccharide, is a natural polymer which is derived from renewable sources. As a biomaterial, tragacanth gum has been used in industrial settings such as food packaging and water treatment, as well as in the biomedical field as drug carriers and for wound healing purposes. The present review provides an overview on the state-of-the-art in the field of tragacanth gum applications. The structure, properties, cytotoxicity, and degradability as well as the recent advances in industrial and biomedical applications of tragacanth gum are reviewed to offer a backdrop for future research.

Abstract
The effects of Plantago major seed (PMS) gum on the rheological properties of the sunflower oil-based emulsions (steady shear flow and dynamic oscillatory rheology) were investigated. The results of steady shear flow experiments showed that the shear stress-shear rate, apparent viscosity-shear rate, and shear stress-time data were well fitted with Herschel-Bulkley, Carreau, and Tiu-Bogar models, respectively, and showed the highest R2 and the lower root mean square error within different models. The strain and frequency sweep data indicated that all emulsions showed weak gel-like behavior, which showed stable interactions and entanglements in the emulsion structure. CoX-Merz rule was applied to investigate the relationship between complex viscosity (η*) and apparent viscosity (ηa ). In all emulsions containing PMS gum, η* > η a and they did not obey from this rule. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The rheological properties of emulsion are critical features in stabilization of emulsion based products. The PMS gum can potentially be used in producing and stabilization of emulsion based products and effects of this gum on in oil in water emulsion can be useful in development of plant originated hydrocolloids in foods.

Abstract
In this work, the relationship between surface properties and drug release mechanism from binary composition tablets formed by quetiapine fumarate and biopolymer materials was studied. The biopolymers correspond to xanthan and tragacanth gums, which are projected as modified drug release systems. The surface studies were carried out by the sessile drop method, while the surface free energy (SFE) was determinate through Young-Dupree and OWRK semi-empirical models. On the other hand, the drug release studies were performed by in vitro dissolution tests, where the data were analyzed through kinetic models of zero order, first order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas. The results showed that depending on the type and the proportion of biopolymer, surface properties, and the drug release processes are significantly affected, wherein tragacanth gum present a usual erosion mechanism, while xanthan gum describes a swelling mechanism that controls the release of the drug.
