3D-3D dentition superimposition for individual identification: A study of an Eastern Chinese population

Recently, 3D dental intraoral scanning technology has been developed rapidly and applied widely in everyday dental practice. Since 3D dental scanning could provide valuable personal information, it enabled researchers to develop novel procedures for individual identification through 3D-3D dentition superimposition. This study aimed to test the applicability of this method in an Eastern Chinese population and propose a threshold for personal identification. For this purpose, 40 volunteers were recruited, and the initial 80 (upper and lower) 3D intraoral scans (IOS) were collected. After one year, 80 IOS of these volunteers were repeatedly collected. In addition, the other 120 IOS of 60 patients were extracted from the database. The 3D models were trimmed, aligned, and superimposed via Geomagic Control X software, and then the root mean square (RMS) value of point-to-point distance between the two models was calculated. The superimposition of two IOS belonging to the same individual was considered as a match, and superimposition of two IOS belonging to different individuals was considered as a mismatch. Totally, superimpositions of 80 matches and 3120 mismatches were obtained. Intra- and inter-observer errors were assessed through the calculation of relative technical error of measurement (rTEM). Mann-Whitney U test verified possible statistically significant differences between matches and mismatches (P < 0.05). The rTEM of intra- and inter-observer repeatability analyses was lower than 4.7 %. The range of RMS value was 0.05-0.18 mm in matches and 0.72-2.28 mm in mismatches without overlapping. The percentage of accurate identification reached 100 % in blind test through an arbitrary RMS threshold of 0.45 mm. The results indicated that individual identification through the 3D-3D dentition superimposition was effective in Eastern Chinese population. Successful identification could be achieved with high probability when the RMS value of the point-to-point distance of two dentitions is <0.45 mm.

Trigeminal sensory nerve patterns in dentine and their responses to attrition in rat molars

OBJECTIVE

Our goal was to define trigeminal nerve ending quantities and patterns in rat molar dentine, their responses to attrition (tooth wear), and their associated odontoblasts and connections with pulpal plexuses.

DESIGN

Trigeminal ganglia were labeled for axonal transport of ³H-proteins to dentinal nerve endings in male rats (3-13 months old). Autoradiography detected radio-labeled dentinal tubules as indicators of nerve ending locations. Quantitative morphometry was done (ANOVA, t-tests), and littermates were compared for attrition and innervation.

RESULTS

There were six dentinal patterns, only two of which had an associated neural plexus of Raschkow and cell-free zone (Den-1, Den-2). Other nerves entered dentin from bush-like endings near elongated odontoblasts (Den-B), as single fibers (Den-X), as networks in predentine (PdN), or as single fibers in tertiary dentine at cusp tips (Den-S). There were at least 186,600 innervated dentinal tubules within the set of three right maxillary molars of the best-labeled rat, and similar densities were found in other rats. Attrition levels differed among cusps and in littermates (t-test p < 0.02-0.0001), but the matched right/left cusps per rat were similar. Innervations of tertiary and enamel-free dentine (Den-S, Den-X) were preserved in all rats. Den-B and Den-2 coronal patterns were unchanged unless displaced by dentinogenesis. Den-1 losses occurred in older cusps, while Den-2 patterns increased near cervical and intercuspal odontoblasts.

CONCLUSIONS

The extensive molar dentinal innervation had unique distributions per rat per cusp that depended on region (buccal, middle, palatal) and attrition, but only two of six patterns connected to a plexus of Raschkow.

A comparative study of sagittal dental relationship using digital method of bite mark evaluation

Introduction:

Intercuspation of teeth depends on position of teeth and jaws. Bite mark is the resultant of the intercuspation of teeth produced by an individual.

Aims and Objective:

Comparative evaluation of bite marks in Angle's Class I, II, and III sagittal occlusion.

Materials and Methods:

Three groups as per Angle's classification-Class I, Class II, and Class III relation were taken. Each group comprised 30 samples each. The dental casts were scanned to create digital images. “IC Measure” software was used to determine the angular and linear measurements on scanned images of study model after calibration. Internal angles of odontometric triangle, intercanine width, shape of the arch, size, and shape of the individual teeth was recorded and subjected to the statistical analysis.

Results:

All incisors had rectangular and canine had triangular shape. Bilateral maxillary lateral incisors and mandibular left central incisor were significantly small in size for Class III. Square arch form was found more commonly in Class III and ovoid arch form in Class I and Class II occlusion. Intercanine width was insignificant among all occlusions. All the angles of the odontometric triangle in the maxillary and mandibular arches were significant for Class III.

Conclusion:

Class III occlusion individuals were distinct for shape of the arch and angles of maxillary and mandibular odontometric triangle. The quantified values of odontometric triangle can be utilized for the identification of Class III individuals.
