Picosecond Alexandrite Laser With Diffractive Lens Array Combined With Long-Pulse Alexandrite Laser for the Treatment of Facial Photoaging in Chinese Women: A Retrospective Study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Facial photoaging is a type of facial skin aging induced mainly by exogenous factors (ultraviolet radiation) and often manifests itself in the form of hyperpigmentation, telangiectasia, roughness, increase in fine lines/wrinkles, and enlarged pores. Recently, picosecond lasers have become an emerging option for the treatment of facial photoaging, and long-pulse alexandrite lasers (LPAL) have demonstrated promising potential in the treatment of photoaging-related symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of picosecond alexandrite laser (PSAL) with diffractive lens array (DLA) combined with LPAL for facial photoaging.

METHODS

This is a retrospective study of 20 Chinese female patients with facial photoaging who received PSAL with DLA combined with LPAL during a 1-year period. All patients were treated every 4 weeks for a total of three treatments. Objective indicators of facial photoaging and patient satisfaction were evaluated before each treatment, and pain scores and adverse effects were recorded after each treatment.

RESULTS

Compared with baseline, patients showed significant differences in all facial photoaging indices (p < 0.01). After receiving three treatments, there was a 20.1% decrease in the pigmentation index, a 23.9% decrease in the erythema index, a 34.5% decrease in the texture index, a 28.4% decrease in the fine lines index, a 56% decrease in the pore index, a 9.3% elevation and a 17.1% decrease in elasticity R2 and F4, respectively, and a 55% decrease in sebum content. The mean satisfaction score for the three treatments was 4.67 (3.33, 5.00), and the mean visual analogue scale (VAS) pain score was 7.00. No serious adverse effects such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), hypopigmentation, or blistering were observed at the treatment site during the treatment period.

CONCLUSION

PSAL with DLA combined with LPAL for the treatment of facial photoaging with significant efficacy, high patient satisfaction, and minimal adverse effects.

A faster CO2 fractional scanner system mode for skin rejuvenation. A clinical study

BACKGROUND

The market requires ever-faster techniques, in particular for pre-rejuvenation condition.

AIM

The purpose of this study was to assess if a fractional CO2 scanner modality (called moveo) results in a faster full-face rejuvenation treatment in comparison to the standard mode, currently existing in the scanner system.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 12 female patients affected by fine lines participated in a split-face clinical investigation and underwent to two sessions with a fractional CO2 laser system equipped with an existing and a faster dedicated scanner units. Pain was assessed using VAS. Three-dimensional clinical photographs were captured before, immediately after, 3 days, 14 days after the first treatment and immediately after the second treatment and 1 months after the last one. The uniformity and aesthetic coverage of treatments were assessed using dermatoscopy. Global aesthetic improvement scale (GAIS) was used. The time taken to treat the two sides of the face and all possible side effects were monitored.

RESULTS

Following only two treatment session with both scanner modes, the patient's skin texture improved significantly, with fine lines reduction. There is no statistically significant difference in perceived pain between patients. The GAIS score showed satisfactory results following both modalities. The time parameters indicated that with the faster scanner mode the full-face treatment time was reduced by 30% compared to the standard one. No adverse effects were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

The moveo modality provide faster treatment and a better final dermal aesthetic outcome than the standard procedure while maintaining the same safety profile.

Multiple aspects of eye cosmetics are addressed, including their history and market value, psychological and social impacts, possible problems associated with cosmetic ingredients, products, and procedures, and regulations for eye cosmetic use. In addition, a systematic review that critically appraises randomized controlled trial evidence concerning the ocular effects of eyelash growth products is included. The findings of this systematic review highlight the evidence gaps and indicate future directions for research to focus on ocular surface outcomes associated with eyelash growth products.

"Split-Face" Evaluation of Collagen Changes Induced by Periorbital Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing

BACKGROUND

Periorbital fractional CO2 laser resurfacing has been employed for facial rejuvenation purposes. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has objectively assessed periorbital neoformation and remodeling of local cutaneous collagen, in a split-face model, from skin samples obtained during upper blepharoplasty.

OBJECTIVES

The authors sought to objectively evaluate neoformation and remodeling of local cutaneous collagen after periorbital skin fractional CO2 laser resurfacing.

METHODS

Sixteen female patients presenting with dermatochalasis and periorbital rhytids were evaluated in a prospective and comparative study. All patients underwent unilateral periorbital fractional CO2 laser resurfacing 30 days before upper blepharoplasty. Quantification of types I and III collagen from laser-treated and untreated eyelid skin samples obtained during upper blepharoplasty was assessed with histochemical analysis (Picrosirius Red staining). Laser resurfacing treatment was applied to the untreated side immediately after the upper blepharoplasty. Two blinded, independent physicians evaluated clinical improvement in pretreatment and 1- and 6-month posttreatment digital images.

RESULTS

Histochemical analysis showed significantly higher intensity in collagen types I (treated: 158.7 ± 5.3, untreated: 139.2 ± 5.0; P < 0.0001) and III (treated: 105.1 ± 7.7, untreated: 104.1 ± 7.1; P < 0.0001) in the fractional CO2 laser treatment samples; a greater difference was detected in collagen type I. A significant improvement in periorbital rhytidosis was observed 1 month after laser resurfacing (23%); a greater improvement in the periorbital region was observed 6 months after laser resurfacing and upper blepharoplasty (43.67%).

CONCLUSIONS

Periorbital fractional CO2 laser resurfacing was an effective method to improve palpebral skin, with histochemical evidence of increase in collagen types I and III.
