Abstract
The liver is a key organ that is responsible for the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates and the absorption and storage of micronutrients. Unfortunately, the prevalence of chronic liver diseases at various stages of advancement in the world population is significant. Due to the physiological function of the liver, its dysfunction can lead to malnutrition and sarcopenia, and the patient's nutritional status is an important prognostic factor. This review discusses key issues related to the diet therapy of patients with chronic liver diseases, as well as those qualified for liver transplantation and in the postoperative period.

Abstract
Various studies have reported that Noni shows various health effects. This study aimed to assess the ability of Noni fruit extract to serve as a single active functional ingredient for the alleviation of hangover symptoms in Sprague Dawley rats and healthy subjects in a single-dose, randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled study. The rats were orally administered Noni fruit extract at 50 or 100 mg per kg body weight (B.W.) and HOVENIA. The blood ethanol (EtOH) and acetaldehyde concentrations were significantly lower in the 100 mg per kg B.W. group than in the EtOH group. Alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase activity tended to increase in the 100 mg kg-1 B.W. group. In the human study, 30 subjects received either a placebo or Noni fruit extract (1 g). The Noni fruit extract group showed significantly faster time point at which the maximum concentration (Tmax) of alcohol than in the placebo group. In addition, blood acetaldehyde levels and diarrhea at 40 and 720 min after alcohol intake and the area under the curve between 40 and 60 min of acetaldehyde were significantly decreased in the Noni fruit extract group compared to the placebo group. According to the QUalitative INteraction Trees, subjects who were ≤36 years old who consumed more alcohol (>15 drinks per week) and had a higher total hangover score (>27.5 and 33) presented significantly lower blood acetaldehyde levels and less severe hangover symptoms. These results indicate that Noni fruit extract has the potential to improve hangover symptoms by decreasing alcohol and acetaldehyde levels.

Abstract
Alcohol dependence is one of the main reasons for inpatient admission to psychiatric hospitals. The abuse of this chemical substance can cause modifications in our organism and among them, variations in the oxidative stress parameters. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital unit to treat alcohol dependence, comparing oxidative stress, renal and hepatic function parameters from the moment of admission to those obtained at discharge. Hepatic function was verified through gamma-glutamyl-transferase (GGT), alkaline-phosphatase (ALP), aspartate-aminotransferase (AST) and alanine-aminotransferase (ALT) activity measurements. Urea and creatinine serum levels were measured for kidney function evaluation. Oxidative stress was evaluated by superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Medications used during hospital stay were record and their influence over the measured parameters analyzed. Twenty-eight patients (82% male, 44 ± 13 years old) were included in this study. A significant increase in BMI of patients after the period of hospitalization could be observed. There were reductions in creatinine, AST, ALT, GGT and ALP serum levels. SOD levels were lower at discharge, while GPx and FRAP presented higher levels. Chlorpromazine use showed influence over some hepatic function markers (ALT, GGT and ALP) and oxidative stress parameters (CAT and GPx); while carbamazepine use influenced GGT and FRAP. Patients on alcohol dependence treatment had significant improvements of renal and hepatic function parameters and higher GPx and FRAP values after the hospitalization period, which indicates reversion of alcohol effects over oxidative stress parameters.

Abstract
Storey onion (Allium cepa L. var. proliferum Regel) is a variety of onion commonly grown in northern China that has not been researched in detail. This study aimed to identify the chemical compositions of storey onion aqueous extracts by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS, as well as characterize the antioxidant, antibacterial and cytotoxic activities, compared with welsh onion and onion. A total of 42 compounds were identified, among which the contents of organosulfur compounds (962.20 ± 34.55 μg/g), polyphenols (100.40 ± 12.55 μg/g) and organic acids (54.04 ± 2.69 μg/g) in storey onion were higher than those in welsh onion and onion. Additionally, the contents of cycloalliin (551.74 ± 8.12 μg/g), ajoene (159.31 ± 5.30 μg/g) and (E)-1-propene-1-sulfenic acid (72.12 ± 2.98 μg/g) in storey onion were the highest. Storey onion had pronounced DPPH• (IC50 = 1.24 ± 0.52 mg/mL) and OH• scavenging activities (IC50 = 14.45 ± 1.29 mg/mL) as well as ferric ion reducing power (absorbance from 0.32 to 2.21). Onion had the highest ABTS•+ scavenging activity (IC50 = 1.64 ± 0.64 mg/mL), while welsh onion had the lowest antioxidant activity. Storey onion had the strongest inhibitory effect on all the tested strains (MIC 31.3-125 mg/mL), and cell viability assays against human liver (HepG2) cancer cell lines also illustrated that aqueous extracts from storey onion significantly inhibited cell proliferation (when incubated for 24 h, IC50 = 33.21 ± 1.12 mg/mL) and induced cell apoptosis. Welsh onion and onion also had weaker antibacterial and anticancer activites, with those of onion being the weakest. The results showed that storey onion with excellent biological activity may benefit to human health and can be developed into functional foods.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate antioxidant activity, DNA damage inhibition and hepatoprotecitve potential of polyherbal formulation Tritone (Livosone). METHODS In vitro antioxidant activity of Tritone formulation was performed by using DPPH assay. Hepatoprotecitve potential of Tritone was evaluated against various hepatotoxic agents including Paracetamol (2g/kg b. wt p.o. single dose on 15th day), Galactosamine (400mg/kg b. wt. i.p. single dose on 8th day) and Alcohol (30% p.o.1ml/100g of rat for 15days). Tritone formulation at the doses of (40.5, 81 and 162mg/kg) and standard silymarin (100mg/kg) and Liv52 (270mg/kg) were administered p.o. The hepatoprotective assessment was done by estimating biochemical parameters: SGOT, SGPT, ALP and Total Bilirubin total protein and ChE levels. Additionally histopathological and DNA fragmentation study of Tritone was also performed. RESULT Administration of hepatotoxins (paracetamol, D-GaiN and alcohol) in experimental animals showed significant biochemical, histological deterioration and DNA fragmentation. Pretreatment with Tritone (Livosone) shows significant reduction in serum SGOT, SGPT, ALP and total bilirubin levels and shows significant elevation in total protein and cholinesterase (ChE) levels compared to groups treated with hepatotoxic agents. Histopathological observations of rat liver pretreated with Tritone (Livosone) shows significant protection against hepatic damage. Inhibition of DNA fragmentation by Tritone indicates protective effect of formulation on liver at molecular level. Finally all the results were compared with standard drugs Silymarin and Liv52. CONCLUSION Correlation of antioxidant activity, biochemical results, histopathological changes and inhibition of DNA damage after treatment with Tritone shows maximum hepatoprotective potential at dose 81mg/kg and 162mg/kg.

Abstract
P. niruri has been reported to possess antidiabetic and kidney protective effects. In the present study, the phytochemical constituents and in vitro antioxidant activity of P. niruri leaf aqueous extract were investigated together with its effect on oxidative stress and antioxidant enzymes levels in diabetic rat kidney. Results. Treatment of diabetic male rats with P. niruri leaf aqueous extract (200 and 400 mg/kg) for 28 consecutive days prevents the increase in the amount of lipid peroxidation (LPO) product, malondialdehyde (MDA), and the diminution of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity levels in the kidney of diabetic rats. The amount of LPO showed strong negative correlation with SOD, CAT, and GPx activity levels. P. niruri leaf aqueous extract exhibits in vitro antioxidant activity with IC50 slightly lower than ascorbic acid. Phytochemical screening of plant extract indicates the presence of polyphenols. Conclusion. P. niruri leaf extract protects the kidney from oxidative stress induced by diabetes.
