Abstract
This study assesses the effects of a prebiotic derived from Morinda citrifolia (noni fruit) extract and a probiotic of Lactobacillus plantarum CMT1 alone and in combination on the survival, growth performance, digestive enzymes, and disease resistance of whiteleg shrimp. A total of 1200 juvenile shrimp were randomly allocated to four treatments: control (not supplemented with noni fruit extract or L. plantarum CMT1), Treatment 1 (TRT1) (supplemented with 1 % noni fruit extract), Treatment 2 (TRT2) (supplemented with 108 CFU/kg L. plantarum CMT1), and Treatment 3 (TRT3) (supplemented with 1 % noni fruit extract and 108 CFU/kg L. plantarum CMT1). After 56 days of feeding, the growth indices of the TRT3 group were statistically larger than the other treatments (P < 0.05). Shrimp in the three treatment groups demonstrated significantly enhanced survival compared to those in the control group (P < 0.05), but no significant differences were observed among these three groups (P > 0.05). Shrimp fed the TRT3 diet had the lowest feed conversion rate, which was statistically significant compared to the other groups. Shrimp in the TRT3 group also had significantly higher amylase and protease levels than the control group. In addition, the use of fruit extract or L.plantarum CMT1 alone and in combination significantly increased shrimp survival after exposure to Vibrio parahaemolyticus, with the TRT3 group recording the highest value. The results indicate that a synbiotic of M. citrifolia extract and L.plantarum CMT1 could be used in shrimp aquaculture to promote animal development and health.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of Cinnamomum osmophloeum leaf hot-water extract (CLWE) on nonspecific immune responses and resistance to Vibrio parahaemolyticus in white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). Firstly, a cell viability assay demonstrated that the CLWE is safe to white shrimp heamocytes in the concentration of 0-500 mg L-1. Haemocytes incubated in vitro with 10 and 50 mg L-1 of CLWE showed significantly higher response in superoxide anion production, PO activity, and phagocytic activity. In the in vivo trials, white shrimp were fed with 0, 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 g kg-1 CLWE supplemented feeds (designated as CLWE 0, CLWE 0.5, CLWE 1, CLWE 5, and CLWE 10, respectively) over a period of 28 days. In vivo experiments demonstrated that CLWE 0.5 feeding group resulted in the highest total haemocyte count, superoxide anion production, phenoloxidase activity, and phagocytic activity. Moreover, CLWE 0.5 supplemented feed significantly upregulated the clotting system, antimicrobial peptides, pattern recognition receptors, pattern recognition proteins, and antioxidant defences in white shrimp. Furthermore, the shrimp were infected with V. parahaemolyticus injections after 14 days of feeding as challenge test. Based on the challenge test result, both CLWE 0.5 and CLWE 5 demonstrated a strong resistance to V. parahaemolyticus. These two dosages effectively reduced the number of nonviable cells and activated different haemocyte subpopulations. These findings indicated that treatment with CLWE 0.5 could promote nonspecific immune responses, immune-related gene expression, and resistance to V. parahaemolyticus in white shrimp.

Abstract
In shrimp aquaculture, disease mitigation may be accomplished by reducing the virulence of the pathogen or by boosting the shrimp's immunity. Biofloc technology is an innovative system that improves the health and resistance of shrimp to microbial infections while providing a viable option for maintaining the quality of culture water through efficient nutrient recycling. This review aimed at demonstrating the efficacy of the biofloc system in boosting the immune responses and protective processes of shrimp against Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection, which is known to cause Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND). Numerous studies have revealed that the biofloc system promotes the immunological capability of shrimp by raising multiple immune -related genes e.g. prophenoloxidase, serine proteinase gene, ras-related nuclear gene and penaeidinexpression and cellular and humoral responses such as hyperaemia, prophenoloxidase activity, superoxide dismutase activity, phagocytic activity; the protection and survival of shrimp when faced with a challenge from the V. parahaemolyticus strain have been enhanced. Furthermore, the use of the biofloc system improves water quality parameters and potentially bolstering their immune and overall health to effectively resist diseases; hence, promotes the growth of shrimp. The present review suggests that biofloc can serve as an effective therapy for both preventing and supporting the management of probable AHPND infection in shrimp culture. This approach exhibits potential for the progress of sustainable shrimp farming, higher productivity, and improved shrimp health.

Abstract
The antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) can be detected in contemporary natural aquatic environments and has been implicated in causing intestinal damage in humans exposed to OTC-contaminated food or water. The irreversible damage caused by high concentrations of OTC to the intestine suggests that treatment through dietary means could still be necessary. This study proved the effectiveness of kefir extract (KE) in reversing intestinal damage caused by oxytetracycline (OTC) exposure. Following a 24-hour KE treatment subsequent to OTC exposure from 3 to 8 days post-fertilization of zebrafish larvae, molecular-level and microbiomic assessments revealed significant improvements. These included reduced expression of proinflammatory factors (IL-8 and IL-1β), increased antioxidant levels, and reversed unhealthy distribution of intestinal microbiota. Furthermore, KE supplementation showed potential in enhancing intestinal motility in the experiment of Nile red staining and fluorescent microbead transit. However, histological analysis showed that this short-term treatment with KE only partially reversed the intestinal morphological changes induced by OTC, suggesting that a longer treatment period might be necessary for complete restoration.

Abstract
Frailty, a complex geriatric syndrome, significantly impedes the goal of achieving 'healthy aging'. Increasing evidence suggests a connection between gut microbiota, systemic inflammation, and disease. However, it remains to be determined whether interventions targeting the intestinal flora can effectively ameliorate frailty. Our research involved fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiments on germ-free (GF) mice, dividing these mice into three groups: a group receiving transplants from healthy elderly individuals (HF group), a group of frailty patients (FF group), and the FF group supplemented with Lactobacillus plantarum BFS1243 (FFL group). Our findings indicated a significant shift in the gut microbiota of the FF group, in contrast to the HF group, characterized by decreased Akkermansia and increased Enterocloster, Parabacteroides, and Eisenbergiella. Concurrently, there was a reduction in amino acids and SCFAs, with BFS1243 partially mitigating these changes. The FF group exhibited an upregulation of inflammatory markers, including PGE2, CRP, and TNF-α, and a downregulation of irisin, all of which were moderated by BFS1243 treatment. Furthermore, BFS1243 improved intestinal barrier integrity and physical endurance in the FF mice. Correlation analysis revealed a negative association between SCFA-producing species and metabolites like lysine and butyric acid with pro-inflammatory factors. In conclusion, our study conclusively demonstrated that alterations in the gut microbiota of elderly individuals can lead to physical frailty, likely due to detrimental effects on the intestinal barrier and a pro-inflammatory state. These findings underscore the potential of gut microbiome modulation as a clinical strategy for treating frailty.

Abstract
Shrimp aquaculture has rapidly developed into a significant industry worldwide, providing not only financial gain and high-quality food but also tens of thousands of trained and competent workers. Frequent diseases are now regarded as a significant risk factor for shrimp aquaculture, as they have the potential to significantly reduce shrimp production and result in economic losses. Over the years various traditional methods including the use of antibiotics have been followed to control diseases yet unsuccessful. Probiotic is considered potential supplements for shrimps during farming, they may also act beneficially as disease control and increased production. Probiotics are described as a live microbial supplement that benefits the host by modifying the microbial population associated with the host and its ambient. The present state of research about probiotics demonstrates notable impacts on the immune defences of the host's gastrointestinal system, which play a crucial role in safeguarding against diseases and managing inflammation inside the digestive tract. In the past ten years, many studies on probiotics have been published. However, there is a lack of information about the processes by which probiotics exert their effects in aquaculture systems, with only limited elucidations being offered. This study explores the variety of procedures behind the positive effects of probiotics in shrimp culture. These mechanisms include the augmentation of the immune system, control of growth, antagonistic action against pathogens, competitive exclusion, and modification of the gut microbiota. Mechanisms involved in the probiotic mode of action are mostly interlinked. This provides a greater understanding of the importance of probiotics in shrimp culture as an environmentally friendly practice.

Abstract
The use of probiotics in aquaculture is widely recognized as an ecological and cost-effective approach to raising healthy, pathogen-tolerant aquatic animals, including fish and shrimp. In particular for shrimp, probiotics are viewed as a promising countermeasure to the recent severe damage to the shrimp industry by bacterial and viral pathogens. Purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) are Gram-negative, non-pathogenic bacteria with wide application potential in agriculture, wastewater treatment, and bioenergy/biomaterials production. In aquaculture, lactic bacteria and Bacillus are the major probiotic bacteria used, but PNSB, like Rhodopseudomonas and Rhodobacter, are also used. In this review, we summarize the previous work on the use of PNSB in aquaculture, overview the previous studies on the stimulation of innate immunity of shrimp by various probiotic microorganisms, and also share our results in the probiotic performance of Rhodovulum sulfidophilum KKMI01, a marine PNSB, which showed a superior effect in promotion of growth and stimulation of immunity in shrimp at a quite low concentration of 1 × 103 cfu (colony forming unit)/ml in rearing water.
