Variability of reciprocal aiming movements during standing: the effect of amplitude and frequency

Swaying slower reduces the destabilizing effects of a compliant surface on voluntary sway dynamics

The ability to control weight shifting (voluntary sway) is a crucial factor for stability during standing. Postural tracking of an oscillating visual target when standing on a compliant surface (e.g. foam) is a challenging weight shifting task that may alter the stability of the system and the muscle activation patterns needed to compensate for the perturbed state. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of surface stability and sway frequency on the muscle activation of the lower limb, during visually guided voluntary postural sway. Seventeen volunteers performed a 2-min voluntary sway task in the anterior-posterior direction following with their projected center of pressure (CoP_AP) a periodically oscillating visual target on a screen. The target oscillated at a frequency of 0.25 Hz or 0.125 Hz, while the participants swayed on solid ground (stable surface) or on a foam pad (unstable surface), resulting in four experimental conditions. The electromyogram (EMG) of 13 lower limb muscles was measured and the target–CoP_AP coupling was evaluated with coherence analysis, whereas the difference in the stability of the system between the conditions was estimated by the maximum Lyapunov exponent (MLE). The results showed that slower oscillations outperformed the faster in terms of coherence and revealed greater stability. On the other hand, unstable ground resulted in an undershooting of the CoP_AP to the target and greater MLE. Regarding the EMG data, a decreased triceps surae muscle activation at the low sway frequency compared to the higher was observed, whereas swaying on foam induced higher activation on the tibialis anterior as well. It is concluded that swaying voluntarily on an unstable surface results in reduced CoP_AP and joint kinematics stability, that is accomplished by increasing the activation of the distal leg muscles, in order to compensate for this perturbation. The reduction of the sway frequency limits the effect of the unstable surface, on the head and upper body, improves the temporal component of coherence between CoP and target, whereas EMG activity is decreased. These findings might have implications in rehabilitation programs.

The trade-off between spatial and temporal variabilities in reciprocal upper-limb aiming movements of different durations

The spatial and temporal aspects of movement variability have typically been studied separately. As a result the relationship between spatial and temporal variabilities remains largely unknown. In two experiments we examined the evolution and covariation of spatial and temporal variabilities over variations in the duration of reciprocal aiming movements. Experiments differed in settings: In Experiment 1 participants moved unperturbed whereas in Experiment 2 they were confronted with an elastic force field. Different movement durations—for a constant inter-target distance—were either evoked by imposing spatial accuracy constraints while requiring participants to move as fast as possible, or prescribed by means of an auditory metronome while requiring participants to maximize spatial accuracy. Analyses focused on absolute and relative variabilities, respectively captured by the standard deviation (SD) and the coefficient of variation (CV = SD/mean). Spatial variability (both SDspace and CVspace) decreased with movement duration, while temporal variability (both SDtime and CVtime) increased with movement duration. We found strong negative correlations between spatial and temporal variabilities over variations in movement duration, whether the variability examined was absolute or relative. These findings observed at the level of the full movement contrasted with the findings observed at the level of the separate acceleration and deceleration phases of movement. During the separate acceleration and deceleration phases both spatial and temporal variabilities (SD and CV) were found to increase with their respective durations, leading to positive correlations between them. Moreover, variability was generally larger at the level of the constituent movement phases than at the level of the full movement. The general pattern of results was robust, as it emerged in both tasks in each of the two experiments. We conclude that feedback mechanisms operating to maximize task performance are subjected to a form of competition between spatial and temporal variabilities.

Effect of aging on seated stepping variability

[Purpose] Accuracy in coordinating limb movements decreases with aging. The effect of aging on the variability of cyclic movements is not well known. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of aging on seated stepping variability. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-six healthy young adults and 15 healthy elderly adults were instructed to walk at their preferred speed. Foot contact was monitored using reflective markers. Seated stepping was performed on force plates. The participants synchronized their stepping with 6 different metronome beats: 90-140 beats per minute (bpm). The time-series coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated. [Results] The cadence of young adults was 121 steps/min and that of the elderly adults was 125 steps/min in the elderly adults. The seated stepping CV decreased gradually from 90 to 120 bpm, but sharply increased at 130 and 140 bpm. Compared to young adults, the elderly adults had significantly higher CVs of seated stepping; however, the intergroup difference in the CV of seated stepping at 120 bpm was negligible. [Conclusions] Our results suggest that the stepping accuracy of the elderly is decreased; however, the rhythmic seated stepping accuracy does not decrease at the same rate as gait.

The role of visual cues in the acquisition and transfer of a voluntary postural sway task

We investigated the acquisition and transfer of a visually guided voluntary postural sway (PS) task that was practiced with the provision of either continuous or end point visual cues. Forty healthy adults were randomly assigned in to one of the four groups that practiced sway using different combinations of target and performance feedback. Participants were asked to voluntarily sway in the sagittal plane at a pre-set frequency (0.23 Hz) by matching the force exerted on a dual force platform to a visual target. Baseline, post-test, transfer and retention (24h later) tests required performance of the PS task paced by a metronome. Continuous target cues resulted in greater accuracy at the peaks but at the cost of increasing movement intermittency. End-point cues on the other hand, produced more stable sway patterns but target overshooting. These adaptations differently generalized in the auditory-driven workspace, as reflected by more stable sway patterns for the groups practicing with end target cues and an enhancement of the ankle stiffening strategy for the groups practicing with continuous targets. It is suggested that the types of visual cues available during visually driven PS have a strong influence not only on the acquisition of this task but also on its generalization to the audio-motor workspace.
