Fear of contamination among older adults in the post-COVID-19 era

Recruitment Strategies for a Technology-Based Fall Risk Assessment Research Study Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults During a Global Pandemic

PURPOSE

To describe successful strategies for the recruitment of diverse community-dwelling older adults for a technology-based fall risk assessment research study during the global coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

METHOD

In this cross-sectional study, 124 adults aged ≥60 years agreed to participate. We used several recruitment strategies, including social media platforms, local community centers, flyers, contacting key persons, word of mouth, and contacting participants from previous research projects.

RESULTS

Targeted and personalized strategies for recruitment, including contacting a key community leader (52.4%, n = 65) and communication with friends and family members (46.7%, n = 58), were the most successful. One (0.8%) participant was recruited from a prior research project. In contrast, individuals were not recruited from posted flyers and social media.

CONCLUSION

Recruitment can be improved with word of mouth and contacting key persons, such as community leaders, which can be achieved by building a trusted relationship between researchers and community leaders. [Journal of Gerontological Nursing, 50(9), 18-23.].

Changes in management of head and neck malignancies during the COVID-19 pandemic

Objective

Despite multiple studies from high-income countries, reports from low- and middle-income countries on the impact of COVID-19 on head and neck cancer care remain sparse. This study aimed to assess the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on head and neck cancer patients at a tertiary reference centre in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Methods

We included 228 patients with malignant head and neck tumours evaluated and treated between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2021. Patient demographics, histological characteristics, and treatment modalities were retrospectively obtained and compared between the pre-pandemic period (pre-COVID-19 group) and the period after the implementation of COVID-19 restrictive measures (COVID-19 group).

Results

Patients were significantly older during the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, 63 patients (44.7%) were under 65 and 78 (55.3%) were 65 or older, while in the pre-COVID-19 period, 53 patients (60.9%) were under 65 and 34 (39.1%) were 65 or older (p = 0.017). The pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 groups did not significantly differ regarding other patient- and tumour characteristics, or primary treatment modalities.

Conclusions

During the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly fewer patients were under 65 at the time of initial work-up, potentially reflecting the more enhanced disease-related anxiety of the younger population. Future studies are warranted to address this population's specific educational and psychological needs to ensure appropriate cancer care.

Covid-19 psychological pressures, depression and FOMO: the mediating role of online social support and emotional regulation

BACKGROUND

The spread of the coronavirus has led to significant anxiety among university students, resulting in various mental health problems that could potentially impact their academic performance.

METHOD

To examine the mediating role of emotional regulation and online social support in the relationships between COVID-19 psychological pressures, depression, and the fear of missing out (FoMO) among young adult university students, a cross-sectional research design was employed using an online survey. The sample consisted of 521 full-time university students from China, currently enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

RESULTS

Findings revealed that more than half (55.09%, n=287) of the university students experienced COVID-19 psychological pressures. These pressures directly contributed to increased levels of depression (β = 0.339, p < .001) and fear of missing out (β = 0.236, p < .001). Moreover, online social support and emotional regulation exhibited partial mediating effects on the association between COVID-19 psychological pressures, depression, and the fear of missing out. The results indicated that COVID-19 psychological pressures were linked to higher levels of depressive symptoms and a greater fear of missing out among university students.

CONCLUSIONS

However, the provision of timely and adequate online social support, as well as the implementation of emotional regulation strategies, mitigated the negative effects of the pandemic on students' social and emotional well-being. Consequently, this led to reduced levels of depression and fear of missing out.

Impact of telehealth postoperative care on early outcomes following esophagectomy

OBJECTIVES

To address the short-term clinical outcomes of patients postesophagectomy who underwent telehealth care following surgery. The primary objective was to compare the frequency of emergency department admission between telehealth and in-person cohorts. Secondary objectives included comparing the frequency of endoscopies and clinic visits, as well as reasons for emergency department admission.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent esophagectomy between March 2018 and May 2022. Patients attending telehealth (phone or video call) surgical follow-up visits, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, were compared with a pre-COVID cohort of patients attending standard in-person care. Demographic data, clinical and disease characteristics, and hospital visit data within 6 months of operation were collected. This included surgical clinic visits, endoscopies, and emergency department admissions.

RESULTS

There were 168 patients who underwent esophagectomy and had follow-up care between March 2018 and May 2022; 76 telehealth and 92 in-person. Patients attending telehealth appointments had significantly fewer emergency department admissions (0.45 vs 0.79, P = .037) and more endoscopy visits (1.37 vs 0.91, P = .020) compared with patients attending in-person visits. The number of follow-up surgical clinic visits did not differ between the groups. The most frequent reasons for emergency visits for the telehealth cohort included dysphagia, feeding-tube problems, and failure to thrive. For the in-person cohort, feeding-tube complications, inflammation/infection, and failure to thrive were the most common reasons.

CONCLUSIONS

A program of virtual follow-up, with integrated in person visits and endoscopy as required, is feasible and safe for following patients postesophagectomy.

The effectiveness of nature-based therapy for community psychological distress and well-being during COVID-19: a multi-site trial

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world population faced various mental health challenges, highlighting a need for new community-based psychosocial interventions. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and feasibility of Nature-Based Therapy (NBT) for the community experiencing psychological distress during the pandemic. A multi-site trial comparing NBT and control groups was conducted in Korea with 291 participants exhibiting mild to severe depression or anxiety. A total of 192 participated in 30 sessions of therapeutic gardening, while 99 remained in the control group. Psychological distress and well-being were assessed using seven measures of depression, anxiety, daily activity, life satisfaction, mindfulness, stress, and loneliness. The effect sizes (Cohen's d) of NBT compared to the control group were medium to large: depression (0.583), anxiety (0.728), daily activity (1.002), life satisfaction (0.786), mindfulness (0.645), stress (0.903), and loneliness (0.695). Multilevel analysis revealed significant Time × Group interaction effects for all measures. Pearson correlation (r = - 0.28 to 0.71) showed that changes in all variables correlated significantly with each other, with small to large effect sizes. Therapeutic alliance at post-test positively moderated the intervention effects on the outcomes. We concluded that NBT is a promising psychosocial intervention for treating psychological distress for community dwellers.

Self-Reported Cognitive Aging and Well-Being among Older Middle Eastern/Arab American Immigrants during the COVID-19 Pandemic

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic posed new challenges for cognitive aging since it brought interruptions in family relations for older adults in immigrant communities. This study examines the consequences of COVID-19 for the familial and social support systems of aging Middle Eastern/Arab immigrants in Michigan, the largest concentration in the United States. We conducted six focus groups with 45 participants aged 60 and older to explore participant descriptions of changes and difficulties faced during the pandemic relating to their cognitive health, familial and social support systems, and medical care. The findings indicate challenges around social distancing for older Middle Eastern/Arab American immigrants, which generated three overarching themes: fear, mental health, and social relationships. These themes provide unique insights into the lived experiences of older Middle Eastern/Arab American adults during the pandemic and bring to light culturally embedded risks to cognitive health and well-being. A focus on the well-being of older Middle Eastern/Arab American immigrants during COVID-19 advances understanding of how environmental contexts inform immigrant health disparities and the sociocultural factors that shape minority aging.
