Neural field theory of adaptive effects on auditory evoked responses and mismatch negativity in multifrequency stimulus sequences

Physiologically based neural field theory (NFT) of the corticothalamic system, including adaptation, is used to calculate the responses evoked by trains of auditory stimuli that differ in frequency. In oddball paradigms, fully distinguishable frequencies lead to different standard (common stimulus) and deviant (rare stimulus) responses; the signal obtained by subtracting the standard response from the deviant is termed the mismatch negativity (MMN). In this analysis, deviant responses are found to correspond to unadapted cortex, whereas the part of auditory cortex that processes the standard stimuli adapts over several stimulus presentations until the final standard response form is achieved. No higher-order memory processes are invoked. In multifrequency experiments, the deviant response approaches the standard one as the deviant frequency approaches that of the standard and analytic criteria for this effect to be obtained. It is shown that these criteria can also be used to understand adaptation in random tone sequences. A method of probing MMNs and adaptation in random tone sequences is suggested to makes more use of such data.

Auditory cortical responses to abrupt lateralization shifts do not reflect the activity of hemifield-specific units involved in opponent coding of auditory space

Recent studies show that the classical model based on axonal delay-lines may not explain interaural time difference (ITD) based spatial coding in humans. Instead, a population-code model called "opponent channels model" (OCM) has been suggested. This model comprises two competing channels respectively for the two auditory hemifields, each with a sigmoidal tuning curve. Event-related potentials (ERPs) to ITD-changes are used in some studies to test the predictions of this model by considering the sounds before and after the change as adaptor and probe stimuli, respectively. It is assumed in these studies that the former stimulus causes adaptation of the neurons selective to its side, and that the ERP N1-P2 response to the ITD-change is the specific response of the neurons with selectivity to the side of probe sound. However, these ERP components are known as a global, non-specific acoustic change complex of cortical origin evoked by any change in the auditory environment. It probably does not genuinely reflect the activity of some stimulus-specific neuronal units that have escaped the refractory effect of the preceding adaptor, which means a violation of the crucial assumption in an adaptor-probe paradigm. To assess this viewpoint, we conducted two experiments. In the first one, we recorded ERPs to abrupt lateralization shifts of click trains having various pre- and post-shift ITDs within the physiological range of -600μs to +600μs. Magnitudes of the ERP components P1, N1, and P2 to these ITD-shifts did not comply with the additive behavior of partial probe responses presumed for an adaptor-probe paradigm, casting doubt on the accuracy of testing sensory coding models by using ERPs to abrupt lateralization changes. Findings of the second experiment, involving ERPs to conjoint outwards/transverse shift stimuli also supported this conclusion.

Intensity and inter-stimulus-interval effects on human middle- and long-latency auditory evoked potentials in an unpredictable auditory context

It is not known how Auditory-Evoked Responses (AERs) comprising Middle Latency Responses (MLRs) and Long Latency Responses (LLRs) are modulated by stimulus intensity and inter-stimulus interval (ISI) in an unpredictable auditory context. Further, intensity and ISI effects on MLR and LLR have never been assessed simultaneously in the same humans. To address this important question, thirty participants passively listened to a random sequence of auditory clicks of three possible intensities (65, 75, and 85 dB) at five possible ISI ranges (0.25 to 0.5 s, 0.5 to 1 s, 1 to 2 s, 2 to 4 s, 4 to 8 s) over four to seven one-hour sessions while EEG was recorded. P0, Na, Pa, Nb, and Pb MLR peaks and N1 and P2 LLR peaks were measured. MLRs P0 (p = .005), Pa (p = .021), and Pb (p = <.001) were modulated by intensity, while only MLR Pb (p = <.001) was modulated by ISI. LLR N1 and P2 were modulated by both intensity and ISI (all p values < .001). Intensity and ISI interacted at Pb, N1, and P2 (all p values < .001), with greater intensity effects at longer ISIs and greater ISI effects at louder intensities. Together, these results provide a comprehensive picture of intensity and ISI effects on AER across the entire thalamocortical auditory pathway, while controlling for stimulus predictability. Moreover, they highlight P0 as the earliest MLR response sensitive to stimulus intensity and Pb (~50 ms) as the earliest cortical response coding for ISIs above 250 ms and showing an interdependence between intensity and ISI effects.

Visual Mismatch Negativity Reflects Enhanced Response to the Deviant: Evidence From Event-Related Potentials and Electroencephalogram Time-Frequency Analysis

Automatic detection of information changes in the visual environment is crucial for individual survival. Researchers use the oddball paradigm to study the brain’s response to frequently presented (standard) stimuli and occasionally presented (deviant) stimuli. The component that can be observed in the difference wave is called visual mismatch negativity (vMMN), which is obtained by subtracting event-related potentials (ERPs) evoked by the deviant from ERPs evoked by the standard. There are three hypotheses to explain the vMMN. The sensory fatigue (or refractoriness) hypothesis considers that weakened neural activity caused by repetition results in decreased ERPs of the standard. The memory trace hypothesis proposes that vMMN results from increased responses to the deviant. The predictive coding hypothesis attributes the difference to enhanced responses for deviants and suppression for standards. However, when distinguishing between these effects, previous researchers did not consider the effect of low-level features on the vMMN. In this experiment, we used face sequences composed of different emotions (e.g., neutral and fearful face) and presented an oddball sequence, a reverse oddball sequence, and an equiprobable sequence to participants. The deviant of the oddball sequence was subtracted from the standard of the oddball sequence, the reverse oddball sequence, and the same type of stimulus of the equiprobable sequence to get oddball-vMMN (vMMN1), reverse oddball-vMMN (vMMN2), and equiprobable-vMMN (vMMN3), respectively. The results showed no significant difference between vMMN2 and vMMN3 in 100–350 ms following stimulus onset, while the vMMN effect was significant, indicating that the probability of the standard did not affect vMMN, which supported the memory trace hypothesis. Additionally, the fearful-related vMMN were more negative than the neutral-related vMMN within the range of 100–150 ms, suggesting a negative bias. We analyzed the source location of different vMMNs. There was no significant difference in brain regions between different vMMNs. Time-frequency analysis showed that the deviant had stronger theta-band oscillatory than the standard (visual mismatch oscillatory responses, vMORs). However, there was no difference between vMORs2 and vMORs3, indicating that vMORs reflect an enhanced response to the deviant in terms of neural oscillation, supporting the memory trace hypothesis.

Event-Related Potential Measures of the Passive Processing of Rapidly and Slowly Presented Auditory Stimuli in MCI

Much research effort is currently devoted to the development of a simple, low-cost method to determine early signs of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. The present study employs a simple paradigm in which event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to a single auditory stimulus that was presented rapidly or very slowly while the participant was engaged in a visual task. A multi-channel EEG was recorded in 20 healthy older adults and 20 people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In two different conditions, a single 80 dB sound pressure level (SPL) auditory stimulus was presented every 1.5 s (fast condition) or every 12.0 s (slow condition). Participants were instructed to watch a silent video and ignore the auditory stimuli. Auditory processing thus occurred passively. When the auditory stimuli were presented rapidly (every 1.5 s), N1 and P2 amplitudes did not differ between the two groups. When the stimuli were presented very slowly, the amplitude of N1 and P2 increased in both groups and their latencies were prolonged. The amplitude of N1 did not significantly differ between the two groups. However, the subsequent positivity was reduced in people with MCI compared to healthy older adults. This late positivity in the slow condition may reflect a delayed P2 or a summation of a composite P2 + P3a. In people with MCI, the priority of processing may not be switched from the visual task to the potentially much more relevant auditory input. ERPs offer promise as a means to identify the pathology underlying cognitive impairment associated with MCI.
