Effect of heat-treatment on the pH sensitivity of stainless-steel electrodes as pH sensors

Acid-base potentiometric titration using a stainless steel electrode without oxidative treatment

An AISI 304 stainless steel laminar electrode without oxidative treatment was investigated for the potentiometric titration of hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide. The proposed electrode was obtained from metalworking cuttings. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to study the surface morphology and chemical composition of the electrode. The electrode showed a sensitivity of 59.18 ± 0.37 mV/pH, which was reproducible under intermediate conditions. Potentiometric titration showed a curve with deviations from pH 9.5 with respect to the glass electrode. However, this did not affect the quantification as the jumps of the curves coincided. The endpoint was 9.25 mL for both electrodes and the hydrochloric acid concentration was 0.0845 mol/L, with a deviation of 0.0004 mol/L from the standard concentration of 0.0841 mol/L. The nonartificially oxidised electrode did not show any crystalline oxide phases, whereas after oxidation it showed semicrystalline phases of iron and chromium oxides and increased the crystallinity of the steel. Despite the low content of surface oxides, stainless steel electrodes can give a Nernstian response to pH, depending on the surface characteristics of the material. This leads to the need to calibrate any electrode prior to oxidative treatment to rule out a Nernstian response without surface modification.

pH response and mechanical properties of Fe2O3-TeO2-based glass/stainless steel enamel electrodes for pH sensors

Glass pH sensors are unsuitable for in vivo biomedical, clinical, or food applications because of the brittleness of glass and the difficulty in measuring small volumes. Enamel structures such as glass/stainless steel are candidates for glass-based pH electrodes. In this study, new enamel electrodes for pH sensors using Fe₂O₃-TeO₂-based glass/stainless steel were developed. The effect of NiO addition to Fe₂O₃-TeO₂ glass on the pH sensitivity and the three-point bending strength of enamels were investigated. The effect of NiO addition to Fe₂O₃-TeO₂ glass/stainless steel on the pH sensitivity was negligible. Fe₂O₃-TeO₂-based glass/stainless steel showed pH sensitivity appropriate to a working electrode. Enameling at a lower temperature under an air atmosphere was desirable for narrowing the gap between pH 4-7 and pH 7-9 sensitivities. The NiO addition to Fe₂O₃-TeO₂ glass/stainless steel decreased the three-point bending strength. Therefore, NiO did not serve as an adhesion oxide in the Fe₂O₃-TeO₂ glass. Fe₂O₃-TeO₂ glass/stainless steel possessed the highest three-point bending strength among all samples when prepared at 670 °C under an air atmosphere. Therefore, no NiO addition and enameling at a lower temperature under an air atmosphere are desirable for obtaining more robust Fe₂O₃-TeO₂ glass/stainless steel than Li₂O-SiO₂-based glass electrodes for pH sensors.

pH Measurement at Elevated Temperature with Vessel Gate and Oxygen-Terminated Diamond Solution Gate Field Effect Transistors

Diamond has many appealing properties, including biocompatibility, ease of surface modification, and chemical–physical stability. In this study, the temperature dependence of the pH-sensitivity of a oxygen-terminated boron-doped diamond solution gate FET (C-O BDD SGFET) is reported. The C-O BDD SGFET operated in an electrolyte solution at 95 °C. At 80 °C, the pH sensitivity of C-O BDD SGFET dropped to 4.27 mV/pH. As a result, we succeeded in developing a highly sensitive pH sensing system at −54.6 mV/pH at 80 °C by combining it with a highly pH sensitive stainless-steel vessel.
