A DFT study on functionalization of acrolein on Ni-doped (ZnO)6 nanocluster in dye-sensitized solar cells

Novel Anthranilic Acid Hybrids-An Alternative Weapon against Inflammatory Diseases

Anti-inflammatory drugs are used to relieve pain, fever, and inflammation while protecting the cardiovascular system. However, the side effects of currently available medications have limited their usage. Due to these adverse effects, there is a significant need for new drugs. The current trend of research has shifted towards the synthesis of novel anthranilic acid hybrids as anti-inflammatory agents. Phenyl- or benzyl-substituted hybrids exerted very good anti-inflammatory effects in preventing albumin denaturation. To confirm their anti-inflammatory effects, additional ex vivo tests were conducted. These immunohistochemical studies explicated the same compounds with better anti-inflammatory potential. To determine the binding affinity and interaction mode, as well as to explain the anti-inflammatory activities, the molecular docking simulation of the compounds was investigated against human serum albumin. The biological evaluation of the compounds was completed, assessing their antimicrobial activity and spasmolytic effect. Based on the experimental data, we can conclude that a collection of novel hybrids was successfully synthesized, and they can be considered anti-inflammatory drug candidates-alternatives to current therapeutics.

Efficient side-chain engineering of thieno-imidazole salt-based molecule to boost the optoelectronic attributes of organic solar cells: A DFT approach

This study focused on modeling and density functional theory (DFT) analysis of reference (AI1) and designed structures (AI11-AI15), based on the thieno-imidazole core, in order to create profitable candidates for solar cells. All the optoelectronic properties of the molecular geometries were computed using DFT and time dependent-DFT approaches. The influence of terminal acceptors on the bandgaps, absorption, hole and electron mobilities, charge transfer capabilities, fill factor, dipole moment, etc. Of the recently designed structures (AI11-AI15), as well as reference (AI1), were evaluated. Optoelectronics and chemical parameters of newly architecture geometries were shown to be superior to the cited molecule. The FMOs and DOS graphs also demonstrated that the linked acceptors remarkably improved the dispersion of charge density in the geometries under study, particularly in AI11 and AI14. Calculated values of binding energy and chemical potential confirmed the thermal stability of the molecules. All the derived geometries surpassed the AI1 (Reference) molecule in terms of maximum absorbance ranging from 492 to 532 nm (in chlorobenzene solvent) and a narrower bandgap ranging from 1.76 to 1.99eV. AI15 had the lowest exciton dissociation energy of 0.22eV as well as lowest electrons and hole dissociation energies, while AI11 and AI14 showed highest VOC, fill factor, power conversion efficiency (PCE), IP and EA (owing to presence of strong electron pulling cyano (CN) moieties at their acceptor portions and extended conjugation) than all the examined molecules, implying that they could be used to build elite solar cells with enhanced photovoltaic attributes.

Stability, spectroscopic, electrochemistry and QTAIM analysis of Cu-Znn-1On clusters for glucose sensing application: A study on theoretical and experimental insights

Clusters of (ZnO)_n (n = 2-4) have been shown to play a central role in the detection of glucose entity based on the existence of photo-induced electrons (PE), which facilitates the interaction between (ZnO)_n clusters and glucose entity guests. The electrochemistry experiment has confirmed the detection of glucose by the title clusters. The optimization, energetic parameters, and vibrational frequency calculations have indicated that the Cu-Zn_n-1O_n-glucose are more stable than the (ZnO)_n-glucose complexes. It has been demonstrated that the Cu doping enhanced the chemical behavior of the clusters and formed a high intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the system. The glucose sensing by all the forms of Cu-Zn_n-1O_n clusters showed that the Cu-Zn₃O₄, Cu-Wurtzite, and Cu-Rocksalt clusters are the most suitable for adsorbing the glucose guest. The HOMO/LUMO iso-surfaces of the complexes showed that the electron concentrations are localized in the d orbitals and mainly in the form of the d¹⁰ orbitals around Zn atoms. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) has clearly indicated that a high charge transfer occurs between the copper and the oxygen atoms, which facilitate the adsorption of glucose. The reactivity parameters also indicated that the Wurtzite-glucose complex has a high electrophilicity index (ω), which means a good acceptor behavior to interact with glucose. Additionally, the bond between the (ZnO)_n clusters and the glucose polar element has been studied in detail by using QTAIM theory. Finally, the theoretical and experimental studies prove that the Cu-Zn_n-1O_n clusters are very suitable and competent compounds for detecting glucose.

Impact of end capped modification on BT-CIC molecule for high-performance photovoltaic attributes: a DFT approach

With the aim of utilizing structural modeling techniques to design efficient organic solar cells, a quantum chemical density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) study have been carried out for the examination of the photovoltaic properties of four BT-ClC-based novel non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) molecules. The designed entities (BT1-BT4) have an A-π-D-π-A configuration with seven fused ring-based BDT central core and newly substituted peripheral acceptor moieties. The optical parameters (absorption maxima, light-harvesting efficiency, first excitation energies, and dipole moments), electronic properties (frontier molecular orbitals, density of states, and molecular electrostatic potential), and charge transfer characteristics (open-circuit voltage, transition density matrix, and fill factor) of the investigated molecules were evaluated using the selected B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) level of theory. The systematic computational analysis reveals that under the influence of terminal acceptor groups, there is an augmentation in the absorption range, and reduction in the band gap values. The electron withdrawing effect of acceptor moieties is evident from the electronic density distribution on the HOMO-LUMO orbitals, along with the density of state (DOS) graphs. Transition density matrix (TDM) analyses reveal consistent charge transfer in the newly devised entities. Reorganization energies computed for electron and hole are significantly lower than the reference, making the transfer of charge carriers efficient. Open-circuit voltage (V_oc) of reported acceptor entities, theoretically computed with PTB7-Th donor, revealed maximum output. Furthermore, the estimated fill factor (FF) of the investigated molecules predicted an increase in power conversion efficiencies. Consequently, all the computed parameters favor the applicability of our designed molecules in the field of organic photovoltaics by virtue of their excellent charge mobilities, increased absorption maximum values, and reduced band gaps.

Converting non-Mesogenic to Mesogenic Stacking of Amino-s-Triazine-Based Dendrons with p-CN Phenyl Unit by Eliminating Peripheral Dipole

Three new amino-s-triazine-based dendrons, 1a, 1b, and 1c, containing an aryl-CN moiety in the dendritic skeleton were prepared in 72–81% yields (1a: R¹ = − N(n-C₈H₁₇)₂, R² = n-OC₈H₁₇, 1b: R¹ = R² = − N(n-C₈H₁₇)₂, 1c: R¹ = − N(n-C₈H₁₇)₂, R² = − N(n-C₄H₉)₂). Dendrons 1a with N(n-C₈H₁₇)₂ and n-OC₈H₁₇ peripheral substituents, surprisingly, did not show any mesogenic phase during the thermal process. However, non-mesogenic 1a can be converted to mesogenic 1b or 1c by eliminating the peripheral dipole arising from the alkoxy substituent; dendron 1b only comprising the same N(n-C₈H₁₇)₂ peripheral groups showed a ~25 °C mesogenic range on heating and ~108 °C mesogenic range on cooling. In contrast, dendron 1c possessing different N(n-C_mH_2m+1)₂ (m = 8 versus m = 4) peripheral units, having similar stacking as 1b, exhibited a columnar phase on thermal treatment, but its mesogenic range (~9 and ~66 °C on heating and cooling, respectively) was much narrower than that of 1b, attributed to 1c’s less flexible alkyl chains in the peripheral part of dendron. Dendron 1a with the alkoxy substituent in the peripheral skeleton, creating additional dipole correspondingly, thus, leads to the dendritic molecules having a non-mesogenic stacking. Without the peripheral dipole for intermolecular side-by-side interaction, dendrons 1b and 1c exhibit a columnar phase on thermal treatment because of the vibration from the peripheral alkyl chain.

Synthesis, combined theoretical and spectral characterization of some new 1,3,5 triazine compounds, and their in vitro biological analysis

New N-heterocyclic compounds with a 1,3,5 triazine core were synthesized by a nucleophilic substitution reaction.

Theoretical design of D-π-A system new dyes candidate for DSSC application

Currently, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are one of the energy technologies that has piqued the interest of researchers, due to their distinct characteristics such as excellent air stability, ease of synthesis and photovoltaic properties interesting. This work aims to study the optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic of six organic dyes based on phenothiazine (PTZ). The effects of bridging core modifications of recently synthesized PSB-4(R) molecule on structural, photovoltaic, electronic, and optical properties of D1-D6 are studied. Using the method Density Functional Theory (DFT) level of the B3LYP (Becke three-parameter Lee-Yang-Parr) exchange correlation functional with 6-31G (d, p) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT). According to the obtained results, optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic of the dyes, we can suggest that these designed molecules are better sensitizers as a candidate for the production of dye solar cells (DSSCs). This theoretical study paves the way for chemists to synthesize more efficient sensitizers for applications in dye solar cells.

Structural, spectroscopic and electrical investigations of novel organic thin films bearing push-pull azo - Phenol dye for UV photodetection applications

In the current study, novel thin films of a phenol-based push-pull azo dye, 2-acetyl-4-(4-chloro-phenylazo) phenol (ACAP), with tunable optical and electronic properties were designed, synthesized and characterized for UV photodetection applications. The crystalline structure and morphological features of the thermally evaporated ACAP thin films are investigated. The fabricated thin films exhibit an amorphous-like structure with low-intensity crystalline regions of average crystallite size of about 29.51 nm and a smooth surface with nanostructured sheets formation. The optical transmittance, reflectance, and absorption of ACAP thin films are measured in the spectral range UV-vis-NIR. A significant high UV absorption extending from 190 nm to 385 nm is observed with semi-transparency nature in the visible region. Furthermore, a good agreement is obtained between the estimated value of the direct energy gap that is obtained experimentally (3.62 eV) and that calculated from the theoretical DFT approach (3.74 eV). The dispersion behavior is analyzed in terms of the single oscillator model and is employed to estimate the dispersion parameters. Finally, an organic/inorganic heterojunction device based on Au/ACAP/n-Si/Al for UV photodetection is successfully fabricated. The current-voltage relations of the manufactured photodetector showed significant stability and sensitivity to the incident UV illumination. The fabricated UV photodetector exhibits responsivity ~25.7 mA/W, specific detectivity ~2 × 10⁹ Jones, efficiency ~16.74%, a fast and reproducible ON/OFF switching behavior with 480 ms and 218 ms rise and fall time, respectively.

Structural, electronic, and energetic investigations of acrolein adsorption on B36 borophene nanosheet: a dispersion-corrected DFT insight

The adsorption of acrolein (AC) onto the surface of B₃₆ borophene nanosheet was studied using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT). The structural and electronic properties were scrutinized by several quantum chemical parameters such as HOMO-LUMO gap, condensed Fukui function, molecular electrostatic potential (ESP), and the density of states (DOS). The non-covalent interactions (NCI) were explored by combined reduced density gradient (RDG-NCI) and energy decomposition analysis (EDA) techniques. It was found that the adsorption of acrolein on both convex and concave surfaces of borophene is mainly governed by van der Waals interactions. Our calculations showed that the adsorption energy is strengthened and favored when multiple acrolein molecules adsorb on the edge sides of borophene through their terminal carbonyl oxygen atom. Furthermore, the calculated HOMO-LUMO energy gaps were significantly reduced upon adsorption affecting, therefore, the electrical conductance of borophene. These results should be useful in designing acrolein sensors.
