Physiological and Agronomic Responses and Nutrient Uptake of Soybean Genotypes Cultivated Under Various Sowing Dates

Late or early sowing subjecting crop plants to stress conditions, this is simulating the climatic change effects. The global warming and climate change are critical issues in agriculture since progressive rise in temperature leads to exposure the crops to heat stress, hence low productivity. Since weather conditions are uncontrollable, it is impossible to modulate their negative impacts against crop growth and development. However, scientists should not be handcuffed about this serious problem. So, in open field conditions, the performance of some soybean genotypes was evaluated under different sowing dates. Along the two seasons of 2019 and 2020, field experiments were designed in a split-plot design using three replicates to evaluate the performance of four soybean genotypes (Giza-21, Giza-35, Giza-111, and Crawford) under four sowing dates (15th April, 30th April, 15th May, and 30th May). Various physiological and growth traits, yield attributes, seed nutrient contents, and oil and protein contents were estimated. Sowing Crawford (in both seasons) and Giza-35 (in the first season) on 15th April as well as Giza-111 either on 30th April or 15th May produced the highest catalase activity. In plots sown on 30th April, Crawford and Giza-21 (in the first season) and Giza-111 (in both seasons) exhibited the highest leaves area plant−1. Plots sown by Giza-111 on 30th April was the potent interaction for enhancing seed yield in both seasons. Under any sowing date in the second season and the sowing date of 30th April in the first season, Giza-111 was the effective genotype for recording the maximum seed oil content. For adopting a specific stress condition scenario, it is advisable to insert Giza-111 as an effective gene pool to improve soybean genotypes under unfavorable conditions, expressed in sowing dates.

Effect of heavy metals on in vitro growth and development of the Momordica cymbalaria Fenzl

Heavy metals have played a great role in the genesis of the present-day civilization. Human beings are affected when these metals are added to the food chain. Although these are the most important plant nutrients, they are phytotoxic at high concentrations. Heavy metals at super optimal concentrations affect different metabolic pathways in plants and result in their ceased growth and development. They may enter plants either by their root system or through foliar uptake; stunted growth, chlorosis, necrosis, and reddish-brown discoloration are visible symptoms of severe metallic phytotoxicity. The study of heavy metal stress tolerance on Momordica cymbalaria shows the effect on the plant growth and metabolism. All heavy metals treated with high concentrations affect the overall plant growth. The Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium with ZnSO4 at 100 µM concentration resulted in healthy shoot development (9) with a maximum shoot length of 7.2 cm. MS basal medium with low concentration of CuSO4 (50 µM) achieved a maximum shoot number (7) with healthy leaves and shoots. MS basal medium with higher concentration of CdCl2 (150 µM) affects plant growth and reduced the regeneration capability completely.

Magnetic Treatment Improves the Seedling Growth, Nitrogen Metabolism, and Mineral Nutrient Contents in Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ under Cadmium Stress

This pot experiment was carried out to investigate the mechanism underlying nutrient metabolism and seedling growth responses to magnetic treatment following exposure to cadmium (Cd) stress. A magnetic device of 300 Gs was applied during Cd(NO3)2 solution treatment at 0 and 100 mM·L−1. One-year-old seedlings of Populus × euramericana ‘Neva’ were treated with different Cd(NO3)2 solutions in the presence or absence of magnetic treatment for 30 days. Seedling growth and physiological–biochemical indexes were measured under Cd stress. The contents of ammonium (NH4+–N), nitrate (NO3––N), and total nitrogen (TN) in leaves, as well as NH4+–N and TN in roots, were increased by magnetic treatment combined with Cd stress, although the NO3––N content was decreased. The activities of nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase (NiR), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutamate synthase (GOGAT) in leaves and the activities of NR, glutamine synthetase (GS), and GOGAT in roots were stimulated by magnetic treatment; conversely, the NiR activity in roots was inhibited by magnetic effects. Magnetic treatment improved the synthesis of cysteine (Cys) and glutamine (Gln) in leaves and reduced the contents of glutamic acid (Glu) and glycine (Gly), while the contents of Cys, Glu, Gln, and Gly were increased in roots. The contents of Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu in leaves were increased by magnetic treatment under Cd stress, whereas the content of K was reduced. In roots, the contents of K, Ca, and Fe were increased by magnetic treatment under Cd stress, but the contents of Na, Mg, Mn, Zn, and Cu were decreased. Magnetization could regulate the uptake of mineral nutrients by roots and translocation from the roots to the aboveground parts by affecting root morphology. Magnetic treatment could also improve nitrogen assimilation and the synthesis of free amino acids by stimulating the activities of key enzymes.

The roles of cadmium on growth of seedlings by analysing the composition of metabolites in pumpkin tissues

Changes in the types and contents of metabolites in plants can occur in response to environmental stress. In this study, pumpkin seeds were cultivated in a cadmium ion solution (cadmium sulfate) for 7 days, and growth parameters, antioxidant enzyme activities, and metabolites in the root, stem, and leaf were analyzed. The results showed that cadmium accumulation characteristics were in the order of root > stem > leaf. Cadmium restrained root growth and promoted superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase activities in the root, but inhibited their activities in the leaf. Cadmium did not change the total biomass of pumpkin seedlings. Orthogonal partial least squares (OPLS) analyses were conducted to detect the relationships between fresh weight and metabolites. These analyses revealed that maltose had significantly positive relationships with the fresh weight of the root, stem, and leaf. Cadmium influenced glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, sulfur metabolism, butanoate metabolism, alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, glutathione metabolism, glycine, serine and threonine metabolism in the root; glycolysis/gluconeogenesis in the stem; and biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, galactose metabolism, cutin, suberine and wax biosynthesis in the leaf. It is important that cadmium inhibited root growth by inhibiting carbohydrate transport from the leaf to the root and promoted leaf growth by the accumulation of carbohydrates in the leaf. Furthermore, cadmium also restrained amino acid metabolism in the root of pumpkin seedlings. These results provide new information about how pumpkin seedlings respond to cadmium stress.

A new perspective on the inhibition of plant photosynthesis by uranium: decrease of root activity and stomatal closure

Uranium (U) is difficult to be transported from roots to leaves, but it has been reported to inhabit photosynthesis in leaves, so how does this work? In the present study, the effects of U (0-25 μM) on the development and photosynthesis in V. faba seedlings were studied under hydroponics. The results showed that U significantly inhibited the growth and development of V. faba plants, including decreased biomass, water content, lateral root number and root activity. U also led to a large accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the leaves which affects leaf structural traits (e.g., decreased leaf area and chlorophyll a content). When U concentration was 25 μM, the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and transpiration rate (Tr) were inhibited, which were only 66.53% and 41.89% of the control, respectively. Further analysis showed that the stomatal density of leaves increased with the increase of U concentration, while the stomatal aperture and stomatal conductance (Gs) were on the contrary. The results of chlorophyll fluorescence showed that the non-photochemical quenching coefficient (NPQ) increased and the electron transfer rate (ETR) decreased after U exposure, but fortunately, photosystem II (PSII) suffered little damage overall. In conclusion, the accumulation of U in the roots inhibited the root activity, resulting in water shortage in the plants. To prevent water loss, leaves have to regulated stomatal closure at the cost of weakening photosynthesis. These results provide a new insight into the mechanism by which U affects plant photosynthesis.

Soil fertility and land sustainability in Usangu Basin-Tanzania

Soil fertility determines crop growth, productivity and consequently determines land productivity and sustainability. Continuous crop production exploits plant nutrients from soils leading to plant nutrient imbalance, thus affecting soil productivity. This study was conducted to monitor soil fertility status in soils of Usangu agro-ecosystem to establish management strategies. To assess soil fertility status in Usangu agro-ecosystem in Southern Highland Tanzania; 0–30 cm depth soil samples were taken for organic carbon, soil pH, N, P, Ca, K, Mg, S, Al, and micronutrients such as Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, and Cr analyses by various established standard analytical methods. The results indicated most micronutrients were available in the deficient amount in many studied sites except for Fe and Mn, which were observed to be above optimum requirement. Based on critical levels established in other areas, 90 % of the soils were ranked as N, P, K, and Mg deficient. The micronutrients (Cu, Fe, and Zn) were inadequate in all soils resulting in limited crop growth and productivity. A high concentration of trace metals was detected in agricultural soils, this might affect plant nutrients availability and leading to environmental contamination affecting land productivity and sustainability. The study found that Usangu agro-ecosystem has deprived of soil fertility leading to poor crop growth and productivity. The authors recommend the addition of supplemental materials rich in plant nutrients such as inorganic fertilizer, manure, crop residues, and treated wastes to improve soil fertility for improved productivity and land sustainability.

Uptake and accumulation of Cr in edible parts of Eruca sativa from irrigation water. Effects on polyphenol profile and antioxidant capacity

Metals in the environment have been an increasing research topic over the past decade, since they can be found in both natural and drinking water, including irrigation of crops and edible plants with contaminated water. The aim of this study was to investigate the uptake of Cr by arugula (Eruca sativa) in a greenhouse experiment, simulating the open field irrigation conditions. We also evaluate the toxic effects of Cr on oxidative stress by measuring the antioxidant capacity and polyphenol profile in the plant. The study examines the irrigation of arugula, during 15 and 21 days, with four Cr (VI) concentrations, ranging from 0 (control) to 250 μg. L⁻¹. Arugula plants were able to accumulate Cr when irrigated during 15 and 21 days in all the Cr concentrations evaluated. The estimated daily intake (EDI) shows that the amount of Cr accumulated by arugula plants does not represent a threat to human health.

Application of Cr levels induced some changes in content, profile and capacity of antioxidants depending on Cr concentration and time of exposure. Taking into account that E. sativa is consumed due to its polyphenol-related health benefits, the allowable Cr limits in irrigation water should be reviewed, in order to maximize health benefits associated with its consumption, and also to improve vegetable quality. Arugula is a valuable and nutritious food, that should not be excluded from a balanced diet. Chromium concentration in irrigation water as well as the speciation forms present in vegetables should be controlled.

Light Intensity Influence on Growth and Photosynthetic Characteristics of Horsfieldia hainanensis

Due to both anthropogenic and natural causes, the number of Horsfieldia hainanensis has been decreasing each year in the Tongza Branch nursery (109.534 525°E, 18.763 516°N) of the Hainan Academy of Forestry, China. Consequently, the protection of H. hainanensis is urgent, as is that of most rare tree species. To develop a more comprehensive understanding of the H. hainanensis growth environment, we took 3-year-old H. hainanensis saplings as the research object. We controlled the light intensity by setting different shade amounts to explore the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of H. hainanensis under different light intensities. We found that shade can promote growth and increase the contents of certain substances. Light transmittance of 44.41% can increase plant height (by 29.545%) and biomass (by 66.676%). Light transmittance of 16.19% can increase the pigment content; Chl increased by 40.864%, Chl a increased by 38.031%, and Chl b increased by 48.412%. Light transmittance of 7.30% can increase the soil plant analysis development (SPAD) value of each part of the leaf; the leaf base increased by 41.000%, the leaf margin increased by 32.574%, the blade tip increased by 49.003%, and the leaf average increased by 40.466%. The specific leaf area can reduce the specific leaf weight. We also found that compared to full light, reducing the light transmittance can increase the total chlorophyll (Chl), chlorophyll A (Chl a), and chlorophyll B (Chl b) contents, and the Chl-SPAD-leaf base, leaf edge, leaf tip, average content, and light-saturated net photosynthetic rate. This can in turn reduce the apparent quantum efficiency (AQY), light compensation point (LCP), and dark respiration rate (Rd). In addition, we found a strong correlation between seven of the photosynthetic pigment indicators (Chl, Chla, Chl b, Chl-SPAD-leaf base, leaf margin, leaf tip, and mean) and the three photosynthesis physiological parameters (AQY, LCP, and Rd). The light transmittance of 44.41% (one layer of shading net) treatment group was conducive to the growth of H. hainanensis and photosynthetic characteristic improvement. Therefore, our light transmittance selection of approximately 44.4% is significant for the natural return of H. hainanensis.

Changes in the morphological traits and the essential oil content of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) as induced by cadmium and lead treatments

The purpose of this study was to inspect the suitability of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) for phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated areas in urban areas of Egypt through study the impact of the most common pollutants in Egypt: cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on morphological traits, and essential oil (EOs) content of sweet basil. The experiment was done under greenhouse conditions. The applied treatments tested in this experiment for Cd concentrations were 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ppm and for Pb: 100, 350, 750, 1,000, 1,500 ppm. The composition and amount of EOs had been determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that the contaminated soil had a negative impact on morphological traits development of basil (e.g., the decline in fresh and dry weight). The increase in Cd and Pb concentrations enhanced the EOs yield of sweet basil. In general, basil cultivation in the Cd and Pb contaminated soils could cause undesirable impacts on morphological traits; however, the presence of these metals has a major influence on the EOs yield, composition, and phytoremediation of the soil.

Modulation of growth and key physiobiochemical attributes after foliar application of zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under cadmium (Cd) stress

A pot experiment was conducted to examine the effect of foliar application of various levels of ZnSO4 on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under cadmium (Cd) stress. Seeds of two wheat varieties i.e., Ujala-2016 and Anaj-2017 were sown in sand filled plastic pots. Cadmium (CdCl2) stress i.e., 0 and 0.5 mM CdCl2 was applied in full strength Hoagland's nutrient solution after 4 weeks of seed germination. Foliar spray of varying ZnSO4 levels i.e., 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mM was applied after 2 weeks of CdCl2 stress induction (of 6 week old plants). After 3 weeks of foliar treatment leaf samples of 9 week old wheat plants were collected for the determination of changes in various growth and physiobiochemical attributes. Results obtained showed that cadmium stress (0.5 mM CdCl2) significantly decreased shoot and root fresh and dry weights, shoot and root lengths, yield attributes, chlorophyll a contents and total phenolics, while increased hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), total soluble proteins, free proline, glycinebetaine (GB) contents, and activities of antioxidant enzymes i.e., catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and peroxidase (POD). Foliar application of varying ZnSO4 levels significantly increased various growth attributes, chlorophyll b contents, H2O2, free proline, GB and activities of antioxidant enzymes i.e., CAT, POD and APX, while decreased relative water contents and total phenolics under Cd stress or non stress conditions. Furthermore, both wheat varieties showed differential response under Cd stress and towards foliar application of ZnSO4 e.g., wheat var. Ujala-2016 was higher in shoot dry weight, root length, root fresh and dry weights, total leaf area per plant, 100 grains weight, number of tillers per plant, chlorophyll b, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), activities of APX, POD, glycinebetaine and leaf free proline contents, while var. Anaj-2017 exhibited high shoot fresh weight, grain yield per plant, no. of grains per plant, chlorophyll contents, chlorophyll a/b ratio, total phenolics, MDA and total soluble protein contents under cadmium stress or non stress conditions.
