Gold-selenide quantum dots supported onto cesium ferrite nanocomposites for the efficient degradation of rhodamine B

Magnetic graphene derivates for efficient herbicide removal from aqueous solution through adsorption

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is an herbicide and is among the most widely distributed pollutant in the environment and wastewater. Herein is presented a complete comparison of adsorption performance between two different magnetic carbon nanomaterials: graphene oxide (GO) and its reduced form (rGO). Magnetic functionalization was performed employing a coprecipitation method, using only one source of Fe2+, requiring low energy, and potentially allowing the control of the amount of incorporated magnetite. For the first time in literature, a green reduction approach for GO with and without Fe3O4, maintaining the magnetic behavior after the reaction, and an adsorption performance comparison between both carbon nanomaterials are demonstrated. The nanoadsorbents were characterized by FTIR, XRD, Raman, VSM, XPS, and SEM analyses, which demonstrates the successful synthesis of graphene derivate, with different amounts of incorporate magnetite, resulting in distinct magnetization values. The reduction was confirmed by XPS and FTIR techniques. The type of adsorbent reveals that the amount of magnetite on nanomaterial surfaces has significant influence on adsorption capacity and removal efficiency. The procedure demonstrated that the best performance, for magnetic nanocomposites, was obtained by GO∙Fe3O4 1:1 and rGO∙Fe3O4 1:1, presenting values of removal percentage of 70.49 and 91.19%, respectively. The highest adsorption capacity was reached at pH 2.0 for GO∙Fe3O4 1:1 (69.98 mg g-1) and rGO∙Fe3O4 1:1 (89.27 mg g-1), through different interactions: π-π, cation-π, and hydrogen bonds. The adsorption phenomenon exhibited a high dependence on pH, initial concentration of adsorbate, and coexisting ions. Sips and PSO models demonstrate the best adjustment for experimental data, suggesting a heterogeneous surface and different energy sites, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the process was spontaneous and exothermic. Finally, the nanoadsorbents demonstrated a high efficiency in 2,4-D adsorption even after five adsorption/desorption cycles.

Degradation of Sodium Acetate by Catalytic Ozonation Coupled with a Mn-Functionalized Fly Ash: Reaction Parameters and Mechanism

Supported ozone catalysts usually take alumina, activated carbon, mesoporous molecular sieve, graphene, etc. as the carrier for loading metal oxide via the impregnation method, sol-gel method and precipitation method. In this work, a Mn-modified fly ash catalyst was synthesized to reduce the consumption and high unit price of traditional catalyst carriers like alumina. As a solid waste discharged from coal-fired power plants fueled by coal, fly ash also has porous spherical fine particles with constant surface area and activity, abd is expected to be applied as the main component in the synthesis of ozone catalyst. After the pretreatment process and modification with MnOx, the obtained Mn-modified fly ash exhibited stronger specific surface area and porosity combined with considerable ozone catalytic performance. We used sodium acetate as the contaminant probe, which is difficult to directly decompose with ozone as the end product of ozone oxidation, to evaluate the performance of this Mn-modified fly. It was found that ozone molecules can be transformed to generate ·OH, ·O2- and 1O2 for the further oxidation of sodium acetate. The oxygen vacancy produced via Mn modification plays a crucial role in the adsorption and excitation of ozone. This work demonstrates that fly ash, as an industrial waste, can be synthesized as a potential industrial catalyst with stable physical and chemical properties, a simple preparation method and low costs.

Cobalt Impregnation on Titania Photocatalysts Enhances Vis Phenol Photodegradation

One of the main challenges of photocatalysis is to find a stable and effective photocatalyst, that is active and effective under sunlight. Here, we discuss the photocatalytic degradation of phenol as a model pollutant in aqueous solution using NUV-Vis (>366 nm) and UV (254 nm) in the presence of TiO₂-P25 impregnated with different concentrations of Co (0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, and 1%). The modification of the surface of the photocatalyst was performed by wet impregnation, and the obtained solids were characterized using X-ray diffraction, XPS, SEM, EDS, TEM, N₂ physisorption, Raman and UV-Vis DRS, which revealed the structural and morphological stability of the modified material. BET isotherms are type IV, with slit-shaped pores formed by nonrigid aggregate particles and no pore networks and a small H3 loop near the maximum relative pressure. The doped samples show increased crystallite sizes and a lower band gap, extending visible light harvesting. All prepared catalysts showed band gaps in the interval 2.3-2.5 eV. The photocatalytic degradation of aqueous phenol over TiO₂-P25 and Co(X%)/TiO₂ was monitored using UV-Vis spectrophotometry: Co(0.1%)/TiO₂ being the most effective with NUV-Vis irradiation. TOC analysis showed ca. 96% TOC removal with NUV-Vis radiation, while only 23% removal under UV radiation.

Design of hydrophobic polyurethane-magnetite iron oxide-titanium dioxide nanocomposites for oil-water separation

Efficacious oil-water separation has become a global challenge owing to regular oil spillage accidents and escalating industrial oily wastewater. In this study, we synthesized titanium dioxide and magnetite iron oxide nanoparticles to use as a precursor for the production of the nanocomposites. Hydrophobic nanocomposites were fabricated using polyurethane, hematite and magnetite iron oxide nanoparticles, and titanium dioxide nanoparticles through a sol-gel process. The formation of the obtained nanocomposites was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. In addition, the thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TGA/DTG) and BET surface area results exhibited enhanced thermal stability of the optimized nanocomposite which displayed mesoporous type materials feature with high porosity. Furthermore, the obtained outcomes demonstrated that the distribution of nanoparticles into a polymer matrix had a significant impact on enhancing superhydrophobicity and the separation efficiency against sunflower oil. Seeing the water contact angle of the nanocomposite-coated filter paper was about 157° compared to 0° for the uncoated filter paper and endowed separation efficiency of almost 90% for 5 consecutive cycles. Thereby, these nanocomposites could be an ideal candidate for self-cleaning surfaces and oil-polluted water purification.

Tunable sulphur doping on CuFe2O4 nanostructures for the selective elimination of organic dyes from water

In this work, sulphur doped copper ferrites (S-CuFe₂O₄) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized for the first time using the facile hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized photocatalysts were characterized through XRD, Raman, TGA, FT-IR, UV-Vis-DRS, SEM, EDX and PL techniques. The results revealed that doping with sulphur has been found to be a suitable alternative that causes strain in the lattices as anions replace the oxygen from the CuFe₂O₄ nanostructures. Due to sulphur dopants, photocatalysts are able to efficiently trap and transfer the photoinduced charges, which readily suppress charge recombination. A UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used to monitor the degradation of selective toxic organic dyes (RhB, CR, MO, and CV) in aqueous media. The dye degradation results provide evidence for the surprisingly superior performance of S-CuFe₂O₄ over pristine CuFe₂O₄. On the basis of its efficiencies, this work can be assigned as an excellent candidate for photocatalysis science.

Efficient and recyclable Nd3+-doped CoFe2O4 for boosted visible light-driven photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B dye

Rare earth metal doping spinel ferrites offer excellent electronic, magnetic, and photocatalytic properties, but they have not been well explored for environmental mitigation. Herein, we report the facile fabrication of novel CoNd _x Fe_2-x O₄ (x = 0-0.05) photocatalysts based on Nd³⁺ incorporated into CoFe₂O₄ for the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. The Nd³⁺ dopant considerably increased the specific surface area (35 m² g^-1) and enhanced the degradation performance (94.7%) of CoNd _x Fe_2-x O₄ catalysts. Nd³⁺-doped CoFe₂O₄ played a role in the formation of radicals, including ˙OH, h⁺, and ˙O₂ ^-. With high recyclability and performance, CoNd_0.05Fe_1.95O₄ nanoparticles can be efficient and reusable photocatalysts for degrading organic dyes, including Rhodamine B from wastewaters.

Metalloporphyrin-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction: The Influence of Metal Centers

Photocatalysis is one of the most promising technologies to achieve efficient carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) under mild conditions. Herein, metalloporphyrin-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal centers, denoted as PCN-222, were utilized as visible-light photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Due to the combination of the conjugated planar macrocyclic structures of metalloporphyrins and the stable porous structures of MOFs, all PCN-222 materials exhibited excellent light-harvesting and CO2-adsorbing abilities. Among the studied MOFs of varied metal centers (M = Pt, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn), PCN-222(2H&Zn) exhibited the highest photocatalytic CO2RR performance, with an average CO yield of 3.92 μmol g−1 h−1 without any organic solvent or sacrificial agent. Furthermore, this was three and seven times higher than that of PCN-222(Zn) (1.36 μmol g−1 h−1) and PCN-222(2H) (0.557 μmol g−1 h−1). The superior photocatalytic activity of PCN-222(2H&Zn) was attributed to its effective photoexcited electron–hole separation and transportation compared with other PCN-222(2H&M) materials. The obtained results indicate that Zn ions in the porphyrin’s center played an important role in the reaction of active sites for the adsorption–activation of CO2. In addition, PCN-222(2H&Zn) showed the highest CO2 selectivity (almost 100%) and stability. This work provides a clear guide for the design of efficient photocatalysts.

Biogenic Preparation of ZnO Nanostructures Using Leafy Spinach Extract for High-Performance Photodegradation of Methylene Blue under the Illumination of Natural Sunlight

To cope with environmental pollution caused by toxic emissions into water streams, high-performance photocatalysts based on ZnO semiconductor materials are urgently needed. In this study, ZnO nanostructures are synthesized using leafy spinach extract using a biogenic approach. By using phytochemicals contained in spinach, ZnO nanorods are transformed into large clusters assembled with nanosheets with visible porous structures. Through X-ray diffraction, it has been demonstrated that leafy spinach extract prepared with ZnO is hexagonal in structure. Surface properties of ZnO were altered by using 10 mL, 20 mL, 30 mL, and 40 mL quantities of leafy spinach extract. The size of ZnO crystallites is typically 14 nanometers. In the presence of sunlight, ZnO nanostructures mineralized methylene blue. Studies investigated photocatalyst doses, dye concentrations, pH effects on dye solutions, and scavengers. The ZnO nanostructures prepared with 40 mL of leafy spinach extract outperformed the degradation efficiency of 99.9% for the MB since hydroxyl radicals were primarily responsible for degradation. During degradation, first-order kinetics were observed. Leafy spinach extract could be used to develop novel photocatalysts for the production of solar hydrogen and environmental hydrogen.

Design and Development of Novel Composites Containing Nickel Ferrites Supported on Activated Carbon Derived from Agricultural Wastes and Its Application in Water Remediation

Recently, efficient decontamination of water and wastewater have attracted global attention due to the deficiency in the world's water sources. Herein, activated carbon (AC) derived from willow catkins (WCs) was successfully synthesized using chemical modification techniques and then loaded with different weight percentages of nickel ferrite nanocomposites (10, 25, 45, and 65 wt.%) via a one-step hydrothermal method. The morphology, chemical structure, and surface composition of the nickel ferrite supported on AC (NFAC) were analyzed by XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, and FTIR spectroscopy. Textural properties (surface area) of the nanocomposites (NC) were investigated by using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The prepared nanocomposites were tested on different dyes to form a system for water remediation and make this photocatalyst convenient to recycle. The photodegradation of rhodamine B dye was investigated by adjusting a variety of factors such as the amount of nickel in nanocomposites, the weight of photocatalyst, reaction time, and photocatalyst reusability. The 45NFAC photocatalyst exhibits excellent degradation efficiency toward rhodamine B dye, reaching 99.7% in 90 min under a simulated source of sunlight. To summarize, NFAC nanocomposites are potential photocatalysts for water environmental remediation because they are effective, reliable, and reusable.

Synthesis of nanoscale zero-valent iron doped carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for methylene blue removal in water

Nanoscale zero-valent iron-doped carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (nZVI/CZIF-8) was prepared by carbonation of ferric nitrate and ZIF-8 at 800 °C and used as an adsorbent to remove methylene blue (MB) from water. The synthesized nZVI/CZIF-8 has a specific surface area of 806.9 m2/g, a pore volume of 0.86 cm3/g and an nZVI content of 1.35%, respectively. Both the nZVI/CZIF-8 and CZIF-8 have identical functional groups of O-H, C-H and C=C. With the increase of CZIF-8 size, MB removal rate increased. The doping of nZVI increased the MB removal percentage from 74.5% for ZIF-8 to 96.2% within 80 min for nZVI/CZIF-8. The MB removal percentage increased with the dosage of nZVI/CZIF-8. The MB adsorption with the adsorbents conforms to the Freundlich adsorption isothermal model and the removal rate fitted well to a pseudo-first-order model. The results demonstrate the feasibility of synthesizing high active and stable nZVI/CZIF-8 particles.

Hydrogen Recovery from Waste Aluminum-Plastic Composites Treated with Alkaline Solution

An alternative solution to the problem of aluminum-plastic multilayer waste utilization was suggested. The process can be used for hydrogen generation and layer separation. Three different sorts of aluminum-plastic sandwich materials were treated with an alkali solution. In the temperature range of 50-70 °C, for tablet blisters of polyvinylchloride and aluminum (14.8 wt.%), the latter thoroughly reacted in 15-30 min. For sheets of paper, polyethylene, and aluminum (20 wt.%), full hydrogen 'recovery' from reacted aluminum component took 3-8 min. From the lids of polyethylene terephthalate, aluminum (60 wt.%), and painted polyethylene with perforations, the aluminum was consumed after 45-105 min. The effect of perforations was the reduction of the process duration from nearly 90 min for the lids with no perforations to nearly 45 min for the perforated ones (at 70 °C). Perforations provided better contact between the aluminum foil, isolated between the plastic layers, and the alkali solution. Hydrogen bubbles originating near those perforations provided foil separation from the upper painted plastic layer by creating gas gaps between them. The remaining components of the composite multilayer materials were separated and ready for further recycling.

A Review of Biomass-Derived Heterogeneous Catalysts for Biodiesel Production

The scientific community is being forced to consider alternative renewable fuels such as biodiesel as a result of the sharp increases in the price of petroleum and the increased demand for petroleum-derived products. Transesterification is a technique used to create biodiesel where a variety of edible oils, non-edible oils, and animal fats are used. For this, either a homogeneous or heterogeneous catalyst is utilized. An appropriate catalyst is chosen based on the quantity of free fatty acid content in the oil. The main distinction between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts is that compared to the heterogeneous catalyst, the homogeneous catalyst is not affected by the quantity of free fatty acids in the oil. Early methods of producing biodiesel relied on homogeneous catalysts, which have drawbacks such as high flammability, toxicity, corrosion, byproducts such as soap and glycerol, and high wastewater output. The majority of these issues are solved by heterogeneous catalysts. Recent innovations use novel heterogeneous catalysts that are obtained from biomass and biowaste resources. Numerous researchers have documented the use of biomass-derived heterogeneous catalysts in the production of high-quality, pure biodiesel as a potentially greener manufacturing method. The catalysts were significantly altered through conventional physical processes that were both cost- and energy-effective. The present review is intended to analyze catalysts from biowaste for making biodiesel at a minimal cost. The most recent methods for creating diverse kinds of catalysts—including acidic, basic, bifunctional, and nanocatalysts—from various chemicals and biomass are highlighted in this review. Additionally, the effects of various catalyst preparation methods on biodiesel yield are thoroughly explored.

One Step Synthesis of Oxygen Defective Bi@Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15 Microsheet with Efficient Photocatalytic Activity for NO Removal

Photocatalysis is an effective technology for NO removal even at low concentrations in the ambient atmosphere. However, the low efficiency of this advanced process and the tendency of producing toxic byproducts hinder the practical application of photocatalysis. To overcome these problems, the Bi@Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15 photocatalytic composites were successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized photocatalysts exhibited an efficient photocatalytic performance and generated low amounts of toxic byproducts. X-ray diffraction studies show that Bi3+ is successfully reduced on the surface of Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15 (BT/BBT). After L-Ascorbic acid (AA) modification, the photocatalytic NO removal efficiency of Bi@Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15 is increased from 25.55% to 67.88%, while the production of the toxic byproduct NO2 is reduced by 92.02%, where the initial concentration of NO is diluted to ca. 800 ppb by the gas stream and the flow rate is controlled at 301.98 mL·min−1 in a 150 mL cylindrical reactor. Furthermore, ambient humidity has little effect on the photocatalytic performance of theBi@Ba2TiO4/BaBi4Ti4O15, and the photocatalyst exhibits excellent reusability after repeated cleaning with deionized water. The improved photocatalytic effect is attributed to the addition of AA in BT/BBT being able to reduce Bi3+ ions to form Bi nanoparticles giving surface plasmon effect (SPR) and generate oxygen vacancies (OVs) at the same time, thereby improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, enhancing the light absorption, and increasing the specific surface areas. The present work could provide new insights into the design of high-performance photocatalysts and their potential applications in air purification, especially for NO removal.

Highly Efficient Adsorption of Tetracycline Using Chitosan-Based Magnetic Adsorbent

Herein, tetracycline adsorption employing magnetic chitosan (CS·Fe₃O₄) as the adsorbent is reported. The magnetic adsorbent was synthesized by the co-precipitation method and characterized through FTIR, XRD, SEM, and VSM analyses. The experimental data showed that the highest maximum adsorption capacity was reached at pH 7.0 (211.21 mg g^-1). The efficiency of the magnetic adsorbent in tetracycline removal was dependent on the pH, initial concentration of adsorbate, and the adsorbent dosage. Additionally, the ionic strength showed a significant effect on the process. The equilibrium and kinetics studies demonstrate that Sips and Elovich models showed the best adjustment for experimental data, suggesting that the adsorption occurs in a heterogeneous surface and predominantly by chemical mechanisms. The experimental results suggest that tetracycline adsorption is mainly governed by the hydrogen bonds and cation-π interactions due to its pH dependence as well as the enhancement in the removal efficiency with the magnetite incorporation on the chitosan surface, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters indicate a spontaneous and exothermic process. Finally, magnetic chitosan proves to be efficient in TC removal even after several adsorption/desorption cycles.

Synthesis and Electrocatalytic Activity of Bismuth Tungstate Bi2WO6 for Rhodamine B Electro-Oxidation

Herein, we have synthesized different BWO samples at different temperatures and evaluated their electrochemical oxidation of Rhodamine B dye in an aqueous medium. The prepared samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld refinements, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive elemental mapping, and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses. All the samples crystallize in the orthorhombic Pca21 structure. The crystallite size increased with temperature. The calculated surface areas from the XRD data ranged from 38 to 7 m2 g−1 for BWO-600 to BWO-900, respectively. The optimal BWO loadings on the GCE electrode were 5 × 10−8 mol cm−2 recording the best electrocatalytic efficiency for RhB electrodegradation in 15 min (100%) in 0.1 M of NaCl. The BWO-600 recorded the best activity compared to other BWO samples. The electrocatalytic activity was explained by the high surface area and small crystallite size compared to the other samples. The BWO-600 showed extended electrode reutilization for up to four cycles of reuse under the reported conditions.

From Cyclo[18]carbon to the Novel Nanostructures-Theoretical Predictions

In this paper, we present a number of novel pure-carbon structures generated from cyclo[18]carbon. Due to the very high reactivity of cyclo[18]carbon, it is possible to link these molecules together to form bigger molecular systems. In our studies, we generated new structures containing 18, 36 and 72 carbon atoms. They are of different shapes including ribbons, sheets and tubes. All these new structures were obtained in virtual reactions driven by external forces. For every reaction, the energy requirement was evaluated exactly when the corresponding transition state was found or it was estimated through our new approach. A small HOMO-LUMO gap in these nanostructures indicates easy excitations and the multiple bonds network indicates their high reactivity. Both of these factors suggest that some potential applications of the new nanostructures are as components of therapeutically active carbon quantum dots, terminal fragments of graphene or carbon nanotubes obtained after fracture or growing in situ in catalytic reactions leading to the formation of carbonaceous materials.

CuS-Based Nanostructures as Catalysts for Organic Pollutants Photodegradation

The direct or indirect discharge of toxic and non-biodegradable organic pollutants into water represents a huge threat that affects human health and the environment. Therefore, the treatment of wastewater, using sustainable technologies, is absolutely necessary for reusability. Photocatalysis is considered one of the most innovative advanced techniques used for pollutant removal from wastewater, due to its high efficiency, ease of process, low-cost, and the environmentally friendly secondary compounds that occur. The key of photocatalysis technology is the careful selection of catalysts, usually semiconductor materials with high absorption capacity for solar light, and conductivity for photogenerated charge carriers. Among copper sulfides, CuS (covellite), a semiconductor with different morphologies and bandgap values, is recognized as an important photocatalyst used for the removal of organic pollutants (dyes, pesticides, pharmaceutics etc.) from wastewater. This review deals with recent developments in organic pollutant photodegradation, using as catalysts various CuS nanostructures, consisting of CuS NPs, CuS QDs, and heterojunctions (CuS/ carbon-based materials, CuS/organic semiconductor, CuS/metal oxide). The effects of different synthesis parameters (Cu:S molar ratios, surfactant concentration etc.) and properties (particle size, morphology, bandgap energy, and surface properties) on the photocatalytic performance of CuS-based catalysts for the degradation of various organic pollutants are extensively discussed.

Magnetically Recoverable Biomass-Derived Carbon-Aerogel Supported ZnO (ZnO/MNC) Composites for the Photodegradation of Methylene Blue

Hydrothermally assisted magnetic ZnO/Carbon nanocomposites were prepared using the selective biowaste of pomelo orange. Initially, the carbon aerogel (CA) was prepared hydrothermally followed by a freeze-drying method. Furthermore, the iron oxide nanoparticles were deposited onto the surface of carbon using the co-precipitation method and we obtained magnetic carbon nanocomposite, i.e., Fe3O4/C (MNC). Moreover, the ZnO photocatalysts were incorporated onto the surface of MNC composites using a hydrothermal process, and we obtained ZnO/MNC composites. The ZnO/MNC (55%), ZnO/MNC (65%) and ZnO/MNC (75%) composites were prepared by a similar experimental method in order to change the weight ratio of ZnO NPs. Using a similar synthetic procedure, the standard ZnO and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared without the addition of CA. The experimental results were derived from several analytical techniques, such as: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS-UV). The synthesized carbon, ZnO, Fe3O4, ZnO/MNC (55%), ZnO/MNC (65%) and ZnO/MNC (75%) composites were examined through the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible-light irradiation (VLI). The obtained results revealed that the composites were more active than carbon, ZnO and Fe3O4. In particular, the ZnO/MNC (75%) composites showed more activity than the rest of the composites. Furthermore, the recycling abilities of the prepared ZnO/MNC (75%) composites were examined through the degradation of MB under identical conditions and the activity remained constant up to the fifth cycle. The synthetic procedure and practical applications proposed here can be used in chemical industries, biomedical fields and energy applications.

The Preparation of {001}TiO2/TiOF2 via a One-Step Hydrothermal Method and Its Degradation Mechanism of Ammonia Nitrogen

{001}TiO₂/TiOF₂ photocatalytic composites with a high activity {001} crystal plane were prepared by one-step hydrothermal methods using butyl titanate as a titanium source and hydrofluoric acid as a fluorine source. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), raman spectroscopy, N₂ adsorption-desorption curve (BET), UV-Vis diffuse absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL) were used to evaluate the structure, morphology, specific surface area, optical properties, and photocarrier separation ability of {001}TiO₂/TiOF₂. Ammonia nitrogen was taken as the target pollutant, and the degradation performance of the catalyst was investigated. The results show that hydrofluoric acid improves the content of {001} crystal plane of TiO₂ with high activity; it also improves the specific surface area and dispersion of the composite material and adjusts the ratio of {001}TiO₂ to TiOF₂ in the composite material to enhance the absorption capacity of the composite material and reduce the band gap width of the composite material. The degradation rate of ammonia nitrogen by 100 mg F15 is 93.19% when the initial concentration of ammonia nitrogen is 100 mg/L and pH is 10. Throughout the reaction process, the {001}TiO₂/TiOF₂ composite produces superoxide anion radical (·O₂^-) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) to oxidize NH₃·H₂O and generate N₂ accompanied by a small amount of NO₃^- and NO₂^-.

Malachite Green Dye Decoloration over Au/TiO2-Nanotubes Photocatalyst under Simulate Visible-Light Irradiation

Au nanoparticles were supported on TiO₂ nanotubes by a novel vapor phase impregnation approach (VPI) using gold dimethyl-acetylacetonate as a precursor. This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of these materials in the photodecoloration of malachite green dye, with the vision to correlate the chemical, structural, morphological, and optical properties with its photocatalytic performance. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS), electronic microscopy (HAADF-STEM and HRTEM), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The techniques mentioned above made it possible to detect the presence of small gold nanoparticles (around 3.1 nm), with a high apparent dispersion even at high metal loading for all analyzed systems. According to the XPS results, the Au nanoparticles remain reduced (Au°), and they have a high electronic interaction with TiO₂, which eventually originates an electronic exchange between them and consequently a decrease in the band gap energy. In addition, the surface plasmonic resonance observed through UV-vis spectroscopy of the Au nanoparticles are factors that can be related to the high decoloration observed in these photocatalysts, specifically in the 15 wt% Au material, which achieves maximum photodecoloration of malachite green dye at 93%.

Efficient Degradation of Printing and Dyeing Wastewater by Lotus Leaf-Based Nitrogen Self-Doped Mesoporous Biochar Activated Persulfate: Synergistic Mechanism of Adsorption and Catalysis

The discharge of printing and dyeing wastewater has been increasing, causing serious environmental pollution with the rapid development of the industry. Based on this, an N self-doped mesoporous lotus leaf biochar (LLC800) was prepared from lotus leaves as raw material for the activation of Persulfate (PS) to degrade wastewater from printing and dyeing. The removal rate of AO7 by PS, LLC800 and LLC800/PS systems were 0.84%, 31.11% and 99.46%, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and quench tests showed the presence of free radicals (•OH, SO4●− and O2●−) and nonradical (1O2) in the LLC800/PS system, where nonradicals (1O2) play an important role in the degradation of AO7. The “N self-doped” effect formed by the high N content of lotus leaves is the main factor leading to the high adsorption and catalytic performance of lotus leaf biochar. The effect of pyrolysis temperature on the performance of biochar can be attributed to the change of N content and conformation and specific surface area in biochar. Moreover, the LLC800/PS system has a strong resistance to interference. This work can provide technical support for the preparation of high-performance adsorption-catalytic biochar and the development of high-performance activation materials for persulfate.

Preparation, Characterization, and Photocatalytic Performance of Ag/BiOBr0.85I0.15 Nanocomposites

In the present paper, a series of Ag/BiOBr_0.85I_0.15 composite nanoparticles with different silver loading were prepared by a combined solvothermal and photocatalytic reduction method. The composite samples have been characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, EDX, TEM, UV-Vis, and N₂ adsorption/desorption techniques. The characterization results showed that BiOBr_0.85I_0.15 composite nanoparticles have a tetragonal phase structure. Silver nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the BiOBr_0.85I_0.15, which results in surface plasmon resonance absorption, effectively increasing the visible light absorption ability of BiOBr_0.85I_0.15. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of ammonia nitrogen in circulating aquaculture water under simulated sunlight irradiation. The effect of the Ag loading amount on the photocatalytic degradation of ammonia nitrogen was investigated. Silver loading of 1% (molar ratio) can effectively improve the degradation capacity of the catalyst for ammonia nitrogen in water. The recycling experiments show that 1%Ag/BiOBr_0.85I_0.15 has good photocatalytic stability. ESR characterization and oxidation species scavenging experimental results suggest that h⁺, ¹O₂, and ·O_2^- are the main oxidizing species in the photocatalytic system.

Hollow CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 Heterojunction Boost Photocatalytic Oxidation Activity for Organic Pollutants

P-n heterojunction-structured CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 hollow spheres with a diameter of 250 nm were synthesized using a template-free solvothermal method, and time-dependent morphological studies were carried out to investigate the hollow formation mechanism. The CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 with a molar ratio of 1:2 (Cu:Mg) had the highest degradation efficiency with the model organic dye Acid Orange 7, with a degradation rate of 91.96% over 60 min. The synthesized CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, UV-vis spectroscopy, Mott–Schottky, and EIS. Due to the synthesis of the p-n heterojunction, CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 has efficient photogenerated carriers, and the hollow structure has a higher specific surface area and stronger adsorption capacity, which is significantly better than that of CuFe2O4 and MgFe2O4 in terms of photocatalytic performance. The outstanding performance shows that the p-n heterostructure of CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 has potential for application in wastewater degradation.
