Incorporating versus coating antimicrobials for polymethyl methacrylate: A systematic review

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Incorporating and coating with antimicrobials are techniques that can confer antimicrobial action on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture bases, which can accumulate microorganisms and promote oral and systemic disease.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this systematic review was to answer the question: "Do techniques for incorporating and coating antimicrobial agents in PMMA promote antimicrobial action?"

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist guidelines were followed, and the SCOPUS, PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Science Direct databases searched. The studies were selected in 2 stages, reading the titles and abstracts and then reading the selected studies in full. The risk of bias was analyzed by adapting the quasi-experimental studies tool by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI).

RESULTS

A total of 970 articles were found in the databases; 71 were duplicates and, after reading the abstracts, 38 were selected for full reading. From these, 6 were excluded because they did not fulfill the inclusion criteria, and 32 studies were included in this review. Autopolymerizing, heat- polymerizing, and light-polymerizing resins were evaluated, with the incorporating technique prevailing over the coating, but both techniques effectively promoted antimicrobial activity.

CONCLUSIONS

Incorporating and coating antimicrobial agents are effective methods of promoting antimicrobial activity in PMMA. Combining the 2 methods led to increased antimicrobial activity compared with each individually.

Tetraalkylammonium salts (TAS) in solar energy applications - A review on in vitro and in vivo toxicity

Tetraalkylammonium salt (TAS) is an organic salt widely employed as a precursor, additive or electrolyte in solar cell applications, such as perovskite or dye-sensitized solar cells. Notably, Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have garnered acclaim for their exceptional efficiency. However, PSCs have been associated with environmental and health concerns due to the presence of lead (Pb) content, the use of hazardous solvents, and the incorporation of TAS in their fabrication processes, which significantly contributes to environmental and human health toxicity. As a response, there is a growing trend towards transitioning to safer and biobased materials in PSC fabrication to address these concerns. However, the potential health hazards associated with TAS necessitate a thorough evaluation, considering the widespread use of this substance. Nevertheless, the overexploitation of TAS could potentially increase the disposal of TAS in the ecosystem, thus, posing a major health risk and severe pollution. Therefore, this review article presents a comprehensive discussion on the in vitro and in vivo toxicity assays of TAS as a potential material in solar energy applications, including cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, in vivo dermal, and systemic toxicity. In addition, this review emphasizes the toxicity of TAS compounds, particularly the linear tetraalkyl chain structures, and summarizes essential findings from past studies as a point of reference for the development of non-toxic and environmentally friendly TAS derivatives in future studies. The effects of the TAS alkyl chain length, polar head and hydrophobicity, cation and anion, and other properties are also included in this review.

The effects of nano-silver loaded zirconium phosphate on antibacterial properties, mechanical properties and biosafety of room temperature curing PMMA materials

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) frequently features in dental restorative materials due to its favorable properties. However, its surface exhibits a propensity for bacterial colonization, and the material can fracture under masticatory pressure. This study incorporated commercially available RHA-1F-II nano-silver loaded zirconium phosphate (Ag-ZrP) into room-temperature cured PMMA at varying mass fractions. Various methods were employed to characterize Ag-ZrP. Subsequently, an examination of the effects of Ag-ZrP on the antimicrobial properties, biosafety, and mechanical properties of PMMA materials was conducted. The results indicated that the antibacterial rate against Streptococcus mutans was enhanced at Ag-ZrP additions of 0%wt, 0.5%wt, 1.0%wt, 1.5%wt, 2.0%wt, 2.5%wt, and 3.0%wt, achieving respective rates of 53.53%, 67.08%, 83.23%, 93.38%, 95.85%, and 98.00%. Similarly, the antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli registered at 31.62%, 50.14%, 64.00%, 75.09%, 86.30%, 92.98%. When Ag-ZrP was introduced at amounts ranging from 1.0% to 1.5%, PMMA materials exhibited peak mechanical properties. However, mechanical strength diminished beyond additions of 2.5%wt to 3.0%wt, relative to the 0%wt group, while PMMA demonstrated no notable cytotoxicity below a 3.0%wt dosage. Thus, it is inferred that optimal antimicrobial and mechanical properties of PMMA materials are achieved with nano-Ag-ZrP (RHA-1F-II) additions of 1.5%wt to 2.0%wt, without eliciting cytotoxicity.
