Abstract
The systematic studies of copper(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) ion complexes of protected multihistidine peptides containing amino acids with different side chains (Ac-SarHAH-NH2, Ac-HADH-NH2, Ac-HDAH-NH2, Ac-HXHYH-NH2 X, Y = A, F, D or K, Ac-HXHAHXH-NH2, X = F or D) have provided information about the metal ion and protein interaction and have made it possible to draw conclusions regarding general trends in the coordination of metal complexes of multihistidine peptides. The stability of the metal complexes significantly depends on the position of the histidines and amino acids, which are present in the neighbourhood of the histidine amino acids as well. The most significant effect was observed on peptides containing aspartic acid or phenylalanine. The redox parameters of complexes, however, depend on the number and position of histidines, and the other side chain donor atoms have practically no effect on the electrochemical properties of imidazole-coordinated species. However, the presence of aspartic acid side chains results in a more distorted geometry of amide-coordinated species and increases the reducibility of these complexes.

Efficiency of dihydroxamic and trihydroxamic siderochelates to extract uranium and plutonium from contaminated soils. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL RADIOACTIVITY 2021; 235-236:106645. Abstract
Actinide-based mineral phases occurring in contaminated soils can be solubilized by organic chelators excreted by plants, such as citrate. Herein, the efficiency of citrate towards U and Pu extraction is compared to that of siderophores, whose primary function is the acquisition of iron(III) as an essential nutrient and growth factor for many soil microorganisms. To that end, we selected desferrioxamine B (DFB) as an emblematic bacterial trishydroxamic siderophore and a synthetic analog, abbreviated (LCy,Pr)H2, of the tetradentate rhodotorulic acid (RA) produced by yeasts. Firstly, the uranyl speciation with both ligands was assessed in the pH range 2-11 by potentiometry and visible absorption spectrophotometry. Equilibrium constants and absorption spectra for three [UO2(DFB)Hh](h-1)+ (h = 1-3) and five [UO2(LCy,Pr)lHh](2+h-2l)+ (-1 ≤ h ≤ 1 for l = 1 and h = 0-1 for l = 2) solution complexes were determined at 25.0 °C and I = 0.1 M KNO3. Similar studies for the Fe3+/(LCy,Pr)2- system revealed the formation of five species having [Fe(LCy,Pr)]+, [Fe(LCy,Pr)OH], [Fe(LCy,Pr)(OH)2]-, [Fe(LCy,Pr)2H], and [Fe2(LCy,Pr)3] compositions. Then, the ability of DFB, (LCy,Pr)H2, and citrate to solubilize either U or Pu from pitchblende-rich soils (soils 1 and 2) or freshly plutonium-contaminated soils (LBS and PG) was evaluated by performing batch extraction tests. U was extracted significantly only by citrate after a day. After one week, the amount of U complexed by citrate only slightly exceeded that measured for the siderochelates, following the order citrate > (LCy,Pr)H2 ≥ DFB ≈ H2O, and were comparatively very low. Pu was also more efficiently extracted by citrate than by DFB after a day, but only by a factor of ~2-3 for the PG soil, while the Pu concentration in the supernatant after one week was approximately the same for both natural chelators. It remained nearly constant for DFB between the 1st and 7th day, but drastically decreased in the case of citrate, suggesting chemical decomposition in the latter case. For the Fe-rich soils 1 and 2, the efficiencies of the three chelators to solubilize Fe after a day were of the same order of magnitude, decreasing in the order DFB > citrate > (LCy,Pr)H2. However, after a week DFB had extracted ~1.5 times more Fe, whereas the amount extracted by the other chelators stayed constant. For the less Fe-rich LBS and PG soils contaminated by Pu, the amounts of extracted Fe were higher, especially after 7 days, and the DFB outperformed citrate by a factor of nearly 3. The higher capacity of the hexadentate DFB to extract Pu in the presence of Fe and its lower ability to mobilize U qualitatively agree with the respective complexation constant ratios, keeping in mind that both Pu-containing soils had a lower iron loading. Noticeably, (LCy,Pr)H2 has roughly the same capacity as DFB to solubilize U, but it mobilizes less Fe than the hexadentate siderophore. Similarly, citrate has the highest capacity to extract Pu, but the lowest to extract Fe. Therefore, compared to DFB, (LCy,Pr)H2 shows a better U/Fe extraction selectivity and citrate shows a better Pu/Fe selectivity.

Abstract
Hypoxia activated Co(III) complexes as prodrugs may provide with a selective delivery of cytotoxic or antibacterial compounds. Whithin this field sixteen novel Co(III) ternary complexes with the general formula [Co(4N)(flav)](ClO4)2, where 4N = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) or tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa) and flav = deprotonated form of differently substituted flavonols have been synthesized, characterized, and their cytotoxicity assayed under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Molecular structures of two free flavonols and seven complexes are also reported. In all the complexes the bioligands exhibited the expected (O,O) coordination mode and the complexes showed a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. Cyclic voltammetric studies revealed that both the substituents of the flavonoles and the type of 4N donor ligands had an impact on the reduction potential of the complex. The ones containing tren demonstrated significantly higher stability than the tpa analogues, making these former compounds promising candidates for the development of hypoxia-activated prodrug complexes. Tpa complexes showed higher activity against both selected human cancer cell lines (A549, A431) than their free ligand flavonols, indicating that the anticancer activity of the bioligand can be enhanced upon complexation. However, slight hypoxia-selectivity was found only for a tren complex (11) with moderate cytotoxicity.

Abstract
Fourteen novel CoIII ternary complexes with the general formula [Co(4N)(2O)]X2 or [Co(2N)2(2O)]X2 where 4N = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) or tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa); 2N = 1,10-phenantroline (phen), 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy), 1,2-diaminoethane (en) or 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine (ampy) and 2O = 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-4(1H)-pyridinone (dhpH), 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyrone (maltH) or 2-ethyl-3-hydroxy-4H-pyran-4-one (etmaltH) were synthesized, characterized and their redox features explored. Molecular structure of some selected [Co(2N)2(2O)](ClO4)2 (2N = phen, bipy, en; 2O = dhp, malt) or [Co(4N)(2O)](ClO4)2 (4N = tpa; 2O = etmalt) type complexes were assessed by X-ray diffraction and showed the expected octahedral geometry. Replacement of the 4N donor ligands by two 2N donor ligands resulted in the decrease of the cathodic peak potential of the complexes indicating easier reduction and allowing therefore the tailoring of the redox properties of the complexes. Screening of selected compounds against a human derived cancer cell line, HeLa, showed that, unlike the [Co(4N)(2O)]X2 derivatives, the complexes containing 2N = bipy or phen ligands have better anticancer activity than cisplatin or carboplatin.

Abstract
The results of electrochemical and SOD activity measurements of such copper(II) complexes of terminally protected multihistidine peptides that may mimic the active site of CuZnSOD enzyme are submitted and completed with solution equilibrium studies of some copper(II)-ligand systems. The equilibrium data confirm that the thermodynamic stabilities increase with the increasing number of histidyl residues in the amino acid sequence, the stability order, however, can be finely tuned by the number and quality of amino acids between histidine residues. Based on the cyclic voltammetric studies we concluded that the formal reduction potential values of imidazole nitrogen coordinated complexes decrease with the increasing number of imidazole donor atoms in the coordination sphere. However, the redox parameters of [CuH-1L]+ and [CuH-2L] complexes containing amide nitrogen coordination can be determined as well. All formal potential values of [CuL]2+, [CuH-1L]+ and [CuH-2L] complexes fall in the middle potential range of SOD activity. Finally, after the detailed analysis of species distribution curves based upon the equilibrium data SOD activity of copper(II) containing systems at two pH (pH=6.8 and 7.4) were determined. The imidazole coordinated [CuL]2+ complexes of the multihistidine peptide containing the HXH sequence exhibit the most significant activity, but the presence of amide nitrogen coordinated species with slightly distorted geometry could considerably contribute to the SOD activity.

Physico-chemical properties of Mn II complexes formed with cis- and trans-DO2A: thermodynamic, electrochemical and kinetic studies. J Inorg Biochem 2016; 163:206-213. Abstract
SYNOPSIS MnII complexes formed with cis- and trans-DO2A (DO2A=1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4 (or 1,7) -diacetic acid) chelators were investigated by pH-potentiometry, 1H relaxometry, UV-vis spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry. The physico-chemical characteristics of MnII complexes of these structure isomers do not differ dramatically, however the cis-DO2A platform has better potential for further development. Manganese (MnII) is a promising alternative to gadolinium (GdIII) as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agent. Unlike gadolinium, this biogenic metal might be better tolerated by the body, reducing the risk of toxicity associated with dissociation of the complex. Herein we report detailed equilibrium and kinetic studies performed with MnII complexes of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4-diacetic acid (1,4-DO2A or cis-DO2A) and 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,7-diacetic acid (1,7-DO2A or trans-DO2A). The protonation constants of the ligands as well as stability constants of their MnII complexes have been determined by pH-potentiometry. The stability constants of [Mn(cis-DO2A)] are slightly higher than those of [Mn(trans-DO2A)] (log KMnL=15.68 and 15.22, respectively). Cyclic voltammetric (CV) experiments performed on [Mn(cis-DO2A)] and [Mn(trans-DO2A)] revealed quasireversible systems with a half-wave potential of +636 and +705mV versus Ag/AgCl, respectively. These values indicate that the MnII ion in these complexes is more stabilized against the oxidation than in [Mn(EDTA)]2-. The kinetic inertness of the complexes has been studied in transmetallation reactions with CuII or ZnII ions. Kinetic measurements indicate that both MnII complexes primarily undergo acid catalyzed dissociation and positions of the acetate pendant arms do not influence kinetic inertness. The inertness of these complexes is comparable to that of [Mn(NOTA)]- (NOTA=1,4,7-triazacyclononane-1,4,7-triacetic acid) and about twenty times lower than that of [Mn(DOTA)]2- (DOTA=1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid). In conclusion, [Mn(cis-DO2A)] displays some very interesting features (thermodynamic and redox stability as well as kinetic inertness) which makes this complex a promising platform for the development of more efficient MnII complexes as alternatives to Gd-based MRI agents.
