Abstract
A series of luminescent bis-cyclometalated iridium complexes with 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy), [Ir(C^N)2(tpy)]PF6 (C^N = 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy) for 1; benzo[h]quinolinate (bzq) for 2; 1-phenylisoquinolinate (piq) for 3; and 2-phenylbenzothiazolate (pbt) for 4), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the tpy ligands of 1-4 are coordinated to the iridium center in a bidentate fashion, and the uncoordinated pendant pyridine rings in the tpy ligands of 1-4 form intramolecular π-π stacking interactions with a phenyl moiety of C^N ligands. In addition, the pendant pyridine ring in the tpy ligand of 1 forms an intramolecular hydrogen bonding interaction, unlike in 2-4. Of interest, the photophysical properties of 1-4 are strongly influenced by the C^N ligands; 1 shows a luminescence band at 572 nm, with a short lifetime (τ) value of 80 nsec and a lower absolute luminescence quantum yield (Φ) of 3.72%, whereas 3 exhibits an intense luminescence band at 588 nm with a long τ value of 1965 nsec and a moderate Φ value of 9.57%. The density functional theory calculations revealed that the luminescence originates from the triplet metal-ligand to ligand charge transfer (3MLL'CT) excited state.

Abstract
An electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been utilized to investigate the relative ligand-binding strengths in a series of heteroleptic-charged iridium(III) complexes of the general formula [(C^N)(2) Ir(III) (S-tpy)](PF(6) ) by using variable collision energies. Collision-induced dissociation experiments were performed in order to study the stability of the Ir(III) complexes that are, for instance, suitable phosphors in light-emitting electrochemical cells. The ratio of signal intensities belonging to the fragment and the undissociated complex depends on the collision energy applied for the tandem mass spectra (MS/MS) analysis. By defining the threshold collision energy and the point of complete complex dissociation, it is possible to estimate the relative complex stabilities depending on the nature of the coordinated ligands [i.e. type of cyclometalating ligand (C^N), substituents on the S-shaped terpyridine (S-tpy)]. The collision energy values differed as a function of the coordination sphere of the Ir(III) centers.

Abstract
Three luminescent cyclometalated iridium(III) bis-biotin complexes [Ir(N(wedge)C)(2)(N(wedge)N)](PF(6)) (HN(wedge)C = 2-(4-(N-(6-(biotinamido)hexyl)aminomethyl)phenyl)pyridine, HppyC6B, N(wedge)N = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy (1); HN(wedge)C = 2-phenylpyridine, Hppy, N(wedge)N = 4,4'-bis((2-(biotinamido)ethyl)aminocarbonyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, bpyC2B2 (2); HN(wedge)C = Hppy, N(wedge)N = 4,4'-bis((2-((6-(biotinamido)hexanoyl)amino)ethyl)aminocarbonyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, bpyC2C6B2 (3)) and one tris-biotin complex [Ir(ppyC6B)(2)(bpyC6B)](PF(6)) (bpyC6B = 4-((6-(biotinamido)hexyl)aminocarbonyl)-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine) (4) have been synthesized and characterized. The biotin-free complex [Ir(ppy)(2)(bpyC4)](PF(6)) (bpyC4 = 4,4'-bis(n-butylaminocarbonyl)-2,2'-bipyridine) (5) has also been prepared for comparison studies. Upon photoexcitation, all the complexes displayed intense and long-lived greenish-yellow to red triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)MLCT) (dpi (Ir) --> pi*(N(wedge)N)) emission in fluid solutions at room temperature and in low-temperature glass. Cyclic voltammetric studies revealed iridium(IV/III) oxidation at about +1.21 to + 1.29 V and diimine-based reductions at about -1.07 to -1.39 V versus SCE. The interactions of the bis-biotin and tris-biotin complexes with avidin have been studied by 4'-hydroxyazobenzene-2-carboxylic acid (HABA) assays, emission titrations, and dissociation assays. The possibility of these complexes as cross-linkers for avidin has been examined by microscopy studies using avidin-conjugated green fluororescent microspheres and size-exclusion HPLC analysis. Utilization of these luminescent iridium(III) biotin complexes in signal amplification has been demonstrated using avidin-coated nonfluorescent microspheres and complex 3 as an example. Additionally, the lipophilicity of all the complexes has been determined by reversed-phase HPLC. The cytotoxicity of these iridium(III) complexes toward the human cervix epithelioid carcinoma (HeLa) cell line has been evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays. Furthermore, the cellular uptake of the complexes has been examined by ICP-MS, laser-scanning confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry.

Abstract
A new series of luminescent cyclometalated iridium(III) bipyridine estradiol conjugates [Ir(N-C)2(N-N)](PF6) (N-N = 5-(4-(17alpha-ethynylestradiolyl)phenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, bpy-est, HN-C = 2-phenylpyridine, Hppy (1 a), 1-phenylpyrazole, Hppz (2 a), 7,8-benzoquinoline, Hbzq (3 a), 2-phenylquinoline, Hpq (4 a), 2-((1,1'-biphenyl)-4-yl)benzothiazole, Hbsb (5 a); N-N = 4-(N-(6-(4-(17alpha-ethynylestradiolyl)benzoylamino)hexyl)aminocarbonyl)-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine, bpy-C6-est, HN-C = Hppy (1 b), Hppz (2 b), Hbzq (3 b), Hpq (4 b), Hbsb (5 b)) was synthesized, characterized, and their photophysical and electrochemical properties studied. Upon photoexcitation, all the complexes displayed intense and long-lived emission in fluid solutions at 298 K and in low-temperature glass. The emission of complexes 1 a-3 a and 1 b-3 b was assigned to a triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)MLCT) (dpi(Ir)-->pi*(bpy-est and N-C-)) state mixed with some triplet intraligand ((3)IL) (pi-->pi*) (N-C- and N-N) character. However, the emissive states of the pq- and bsb- complexes 4 a, 4 b, 5 a, and 5 b showed substantial (3)IL (pi-->pi*) (pq-/bsb-) character. The lipophilicity of all the complexes was determined by reversed-phase HPLC. Upon binding to estrogen receptor alpha, all of these iridium(III) estradiol conjugates exhibited emission enhancement and lifetime extension, rendering them a novel series of luminescent probes for this receptor.

Abstract
The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the novel complexes [Ir(ppy)(2)(5-X-1,10-phen)][PF(6)] (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, phen = phenanthroline, X = NMe(2), NO(2)), [Ir(pq)(2)(5-X-1,10-phen)][PF(6)] (pq = 2-phenylquinoline, X = H, Me, NMe(2), NO(2)), [Ir(ppy)2(4-Me,7-Me-1,10-phen)][PF(6)], [Ir(ppy)2(5-Me,6-Me-1,10-phen)][PF(6)], [Ir(ppy)(2)(2-Me,9-Me-1,10-phen)][PF(6)], and [Ir(pq)2(4-Ph,7-Ph-1,10-phen)][PF(6)] have been investigated and compared with those of the known reference complexes [Ir(ppy)(2)(4-Me or 5-H or 5-Me-1,10-phen)][PF(6)] and [Ir(ppy)(2)(4-Ph,7-Ph-1,10-phen)][PF(6)], showing how the nature and number of the phenanthroline substituents tune the color of the emission, its quantum yield, and the emission lifetime. It turns out that the quantum yield is strongly dependent on the nonradiative decay. The geometry, ground state, electronic structure, and excited electronic states of the investigated complexes have been calculated on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT approaches, thus substantiating the electrochemical measurements and providing insight into the electronic origin of the absorption spectra and of the lowest excited states involved in the light emission process. These results provide useful guidelines for further tailoring of the photophysical properties of ionic Ir(III) complexes.

Abstract
In this study, a novel phosphorescent Ir(III) complex [Ir(2-phenylpyridine)2(4,4'-bis(2-(4-N,N-methylhexylaminophenyl)ethyl)-2-2'-bipyridine)Cl] (for convenience, the complex was given the synonym N-948) has been designed and synthesized, to be used as an oxygen probe. It was characterized by spectroscopic and analytical methods when incorporated in a polystyrene and nanostructured metal oxide support. N-948 is the first Ir complex in the literature with a luminescence emission at a wavelength higher than 650 nm (665 nm), with a quantum yield higher than 0.50 (0.58 +/- 0.05) and an extremely long phosphorescence lifetime (102 micros) which has been used for developing oxygen-sensitive films. In addition, the new complex shows a Stern-Volmer constant which is 20 times higher than that of other Ir complexes known from the literature when they are immobilized in polystyrene. The sensing film shows long-term stability (up to 12 months), complete reversibility of the signal quenched by oxygen and a quick response time to various oxygen concentrations (<2 s changing from 10 vol% pO2 to 90 vol% pO2). Thus, it is an interesting and promising complex for developing oxygen-selective sensors for gas analysis and the analysis of dissolved oxygen.

Abstract
Ligands in which multiple metal-binding domains are linked by a metal-containing moiety rather than a conventional organic group are described as "expanded ligands". The use of 4,4'-difunctionalised {Ru(tpy)(2)} units provides a linear spacer between metal-binding domains and we have extended this motif to expanded ligands containing two carboxylic acid metal-binding domains. In this paper, we describe the synthesis and structural characterisation of ruthenium(ii) complexes of 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-4'-carboxylic acid and 4'-carboxyphenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine. The ability of the ruthenium(ii) centre to charge compensate deprotonation of the carboxylic acid leads to Zwitterionic complexes and three representative compounds have been structurally characterised.
