Photo-physical studies of ruthenium(II) tris(1,10-phenanthroline) confined within a polyhedral zinc(II)-trimesic acid metal organic framework

ZnII and CuII-Based Coordination Polymers and Metal Organic Frameworks by the of Use of 2-Pyridyl Oximes and 1,3,5-Benzenetricarboxylic Acid

The simultaneous use of 2-pyridyl oximes (pyridine-2 amidoxime, H2pyaox; 2-methyl pyridyl ketoxime, Hmpko) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3btc) provided access to five new compounds, namely [Zn(H2btc)2(H2pyaox)2]•2H2O (1•2H2O), [Zn(Hbtc)(H2pyaox)2]n (2), [Cu(Hbtc)(H2pyaox)]n (3), [Cu(Hbtc)(HmpKo)]n (4) and [Cu2(Hbtc)2(Hmpko)2(H2O)2]•4H2O (5•4H2O). Among them, 3 is the first example of a metal-organic framework (MOF) containing H2pyaox. Its framework can be described as a 3-c uninodal net of hcb topology with the layers being parallel to the (1,0,1) plane. Furthermore, 3 is the third reported MOF based on a 2-pyridyl oxime in general. 2 and 4 are new members of a small family of coordination polymers containing an oximic ligand. 1-5 form 3D networks through strong intermolecular interactions. Dc magnetic susceptibility studies were carried out in a crystalline sample of 3 and revealed the presence of weak exchange interactions between the metal centres; the experimental data were fitted to a theoretical model with the fitting parameters being J = -0.16(1) cm-1 and g = 2.085(1). The isotropic g value was also confirmed by electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Reactivity studies were performed for 3 in the presence of metal ions; the reaction progress was studied and discussed for Fe(NO3)3 by the use of several characterization techniques, including single crystal X-ray crystallography and IR spectroscopy.

Modulation of Osmium(II) Tris(2,2'-bipyridine) Photophysics through Encapsulation within Zinc(II) Trimesic Acid Metal Organic Frameworks

The Os(II) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) (OsBpy) complex exhibits optical properties that are particularly attractive for light harvesting systems due to the broad absorption spectrum extending throughout the solar spectrum. However, the relatively short lifetime of the triplet metal to ligand charge transfer state (³MLCT) relative to the related Ru(II)tris(2,2'-bipyridine) (RuBpy) has limited applications. Here, the encapsulation of OsBpy within two distinct Zn(II)-trimesic acid MOFs, HKUST-1(Zn) and USF-2 is demonstrated in an effort to extend the ³MLCT lifetime. Encapsulation results in a hypsochromatic shift of the steady-state emission band in both frameworks resulting from a destabilization of the ³MLCT. The encapsulated OsBpy also exhibits extended emission lifetimes in both HKUST-1(Zn) (104 ns in MOF vs 50 ns in methanol) and USF-2 (81 ns in MOF vs 50 ns in methanol) arising from changes in the nonradiative decay constants in both systems. The data are also consistent with vibronic perturbations involved in mixing between higher energy ³MLCT* and ligand field states.

Interaction of the Large Host Q[10] with Metal Polypyridyl Complexes: Binding Modes and Effects on Luminescence

Aqueous solution state host-guest systems have been studied, comprising the large host cucurbit[10]uril with luminescent cationic tris(polypyridyl) (PP) metal complexes [Ru(PP)₃]²⁺ and [Ir(PP)₃]³⁺. All complexes bind strongly with the host, with the overall complex charge and size having a minor effect on affinity but influencing the association dynamics and contribution from higher-order (1:2) host-guest species. The 1:2 species contributes more significantly to the binding equilibrium in the case of [Ru(phen)₃]²⁺. The effect of the host upon emission is highly variable and depends on the electronic structure of the guest. The metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) emission of [Ru(PP)₃]²⁺ is strongly quenched, in contrast to the large enhancements seen previously for MLCT emission of iridium cyclometalated complexes, while the ligand-centered emission of [Ir(PP)₃]³⁺ is little affected. The mechanisms of quenching and enhancement are discussed, together with the implications for the design of larger supramolecular assemblies based on these archetypal emitters.

Guest to framework photoinduced electron transfer in a cobalt substituted RWLC-2 metal organic framework

Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between donors and acceptors in porous materials is a key element in the development of light harvesting applications. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal materials for PET processes due to their tunable pore size and diversity in framework building units. Here, PET between excited [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)3]2+ (RuBpy) and Co-carboxylate clusters composing the metal building blocks of a RWLC-2 metal organic framework is described. The lifetime of the RuBpy decreases from ∼600 ns in deaerated solution to 9.5 ns (kET ∼ 1 × 108 s-1) when encapsulated within CoRWLC-2. The decrease in lifetime is attributed to PET between the 3MLCT of RuBpy to the Co ion cluster composing the MOF building blocks. A fit of the lifetime vs. temperature data to the semi-empirical Marcus equation gives a reorganizational energy of 1.6 eV and an electronic coupling factor (HAB) of 0.006 eV.
