Dioxidomolybdenum(VI) complexes bearing sterically constrained aroylazine ligands: Synthesis, structural investigation and catalytic evaluation

Monomeric copper(II) complexes with unsymmetrical salen environment: Synthesis, characterization and study of biological activities

Three new ONNO-donor tetradentate unsymmetrical salen ligands were synthesized by using o-phenyl diamine with substituted salicylaldehydes followed by a two-step reaction methodology. These three ligands by reaction with Cu(OAc)2.4H2O produced three new monomeric Cu(II) complexes, [CuII(L1-3)] (1-3). Elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, NMR, and HR-ESI-MS techniques were used to analyze and characterize all the synthesized ligands and their corresponding metal complexes. Molecular structures of 1-3 were confirmed by the single-crystal-XRD analysis. Furthermore, the DNA binding ability of these complexes was checked through UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and also by circular dichroism studies. All the complexes were found to show an intercalation mode of binding with the Kb value in the range of 104-105 M-1. Finally, 1-3 was tested against two malignant (HeLa and A549) and non-cancerous (NIH-3T3) cell lines to check their in vitro antiproliferative activities. Among all, 1 is the most cytotoxic of the series having IC50 values of 5.7 ± 0.9 and 6.0 ± 0.3 μM against HeLa and A549 cell lines, respectively. This result is also consistent with the DNA binding order. Furthermore, the apoptotic mode of cell death of all the complexes was also evaluated by DAPI, AO/EB, and Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining assays.

Reactivity of metal dioxo complexes

Metal dioxo chemistry and its diverse reactivity are presented with an emphasis on the mechanisms of reactivity. Work from approximately the last decade is surveyed and organized by metal. In particular, the chemistry of cis-dioxo metal complexes is discussed at length. Reactions are grouped by generic type, including addition across a metal oxo bond, oxygen atom transfer, and radical atom transfer reactions. Attention is given to advances in deoxygenation chemistry, oxidation chemistry, and reductive transformations.

Inspired by Nature-Functional Analogues of Molybdenum and Tungsten-Dependent Oxidoreductases

Throughout the previous ten years many scientists took inspiration from natural molybdenum and tungsten-dependent oxidoreductases to build functional active site analogues. These studies not only led to an ever more detailed mechanistic understanding of the biological template, but also paved the way to atypical selectivity and activity, such as catalytic hydrogen evolution. This review is aimed at representing the last decade’s progress in the research of and with molybdenum and tungsten functional model compounds. The portrayed systems, organized according to their ability to facilitate typical and artificial enzyme reactions, comprise complexes with non-innocent dithiolene ligands, resembling molybdopterin, as well as entirely non-natural nitrogen, oxygen, and/or sulfur bearing chelating donor ligands. All model compounds receive individual attention, highlighting the specific novelty that each provides for our understanding of the enzymatic mechanisms, such as oxygen atom transfer and proton-coupled electron transfer, or that each presents for exploiting new and useful catalytic capability. Overall, a shift in the application of these model compounds towards uncommon reactions is noted, the latter are comprehensively discussed.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Exploration of Mononuclear Mo(VI) Dioxido Complexes of (Z)-1-R-2-(4',4'-Dimethyl-2'-oxazolin-2'-yl)-eth-1-en-1-ates

The coordination chemistry of the title ligands with Mo metal centers was investigated. Thus, the synthesis and characterization (NMR, X-ray diffraction) of four mononuclear formally Mo(6+) complexes of (Z)-1-R-2-(4′,4′-dimethyl-2′-oxazolin-2′-yl)-eth-1-en-1-ates (L: R = –Ph, –Ph-p-NO₂, –Ph-p-OMe and –t-Bu), derived from the part enols (LH), is described. The resulting air-stable MoO₂L₂ complexes (1–4) exist, as shown by single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, in the cis-dioxido-trans(N)-κ²-N,O-L conformation in the solid state for all four examples. This situation was further probed using semi-empirical PM6(tm) calculations. Complexes 1–4 represent the first Mo complexes of this ligand class and, indeed, of Group 6 metals in general. Structural and spectroscopic comparisons were made between these and related Mo(6+) compounds. Complex 1 (R = –Ph) was studied for its ability to selectively catalyze the production of poly-norbornene from the monomer in the presence of MAO. This, unfortunately, only resulted in the synthesis of insoluble, presumably highly cross-linked, polymeric and/or oligomeric materials. However, complexes 1–4 were demonstrated to be highly effective for catalyzing benzoin to benzil conversion using DMSO as the O-transfer agent. This catalysis work is likewise put into perspective with respect to analogous Mo(6+) complexes.

Polynuclear zinc(II) complexes of thiosemicarbazone: Synthesis, X-ray structure and biological evaluation

Two new dimeric Zn(II) ([{ZnL¹(DMSO₂)}₂]·DMSO (1), [{ZnL²Cl}₂] (2)) and a novel tetrameric Zn(II) complex ([(Zn₂L³)₂(μ-OAc)₂(μ₃-O)₂] (3)), where H₂L¹ = 4-(p-methoxyphenyl) thiosemicarbazone of o-hydroxynapthaldehyde, HL² = 4-(p-methoxyphenyl)thiosemicarbazone of benzoyl pyridine and H₂L³ = 4-(p-chlorophenyl)thiosemicarbazone of o-vanillin are reported. Ligands and their complexes were characterized by spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. In addition, the complexes exhibited good binding affinity towards HSA (10¹² M^-1), which is supported by their ability to quench the tryptophan fluorescence emission spectra of HSA. The complexes were also screened for their DNA binding propensity through UV-vis absorption titration, circular dichroism and fluorescence spectral studies. Results show that they effectively interact with CT-DNA through an intercalative mode of binding, with binding constants ranging from 10³ to 10⁴ M^-1. Among the three complexes 1 has the highest binding affinity towards CT-DNA. Further, the phosphatase activity was evaluated using bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP) as substrate, however, the complexes did not yield any measurable catalytic activity. Nevertheless the complexes showed significant cytotoxic potential against HeLa and HT-29 cancer cell lines that was assessed through MTT assay and DAPI staining. Remarkably, complex 1 showed better activity than cisplatin against HT-29 cell line.

Synthesis of New Oxido-Vanadium Complexes: Catalytic Properties and Cytotoxicity

Reaction of 2,3-dihydroxy benzaldehyde with 2-({2-amino phenyl}diazenyl)phenol afforded the ligand 3-(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl)-4-alkylphenyliminomethyl)benzene-1,2-diol. Reaction of H2L with VOSO4. 5H2O gave the oxido-vanadium(IV) complexes [(L)VO], which exhibited a quasi-reversible oxidative cyclic voltammetric response in a V(IV)/V(V) oxidative process. The complexes act as catalysts in the oxidation of organic thioethers and bromination of phenol. Their cytotoxic properties were examined for three cancer cell lines.
