Bis(triazenide), tris(triazenide), and lantern-type of triazenide iron complexes: Synthesis and structural characterization

N-Alkyl substituted triazenide-bridged homoleptic iron(II) dimers with an exceptionally short Fe-Fe bond

Dinuclear transition metal complexes with direct metal-metal interactions have the potential to generate unique reactivities and properties. Using asymmetric triazine ligands HN3tBuR (R = Et, iPr, nBu) featuring different alkyl substituents at 1,3-N centers, we report here the first rational synthesis of 'tetragonal lantern' type Fe(II) triazenides [Fe2(N3tBuR)4] [R = Et (1), iPr (2), nBu (3)] having an exceptionally short Fe-Fe distance (2.167-2.174 Å). Unlike the previously reported lantern structures with related amidinate or guanidinate ligands, highly air-sensitive 1-3 show a lower spin ground state, as indicated by Mössbauer, 1H NMR and DFT studies.

Tweaking the conjugation effects on a pair of new triazene compounds by targeted deprotonation: a spectroscopic and theoretical overview

CONTEXT

Triazene compounds (-NNN(H)-) exhibit versatility in biological, physical, and chemical applications. In their anionic form (-NNN-)(-), they can act as coordinating sites for metals, forming metallic complexes. In this study, two new isomeric triazene compounds with meta- and para-substituents in their neutral and anionic forms were investigated. A combination of detailed experimental spectroscopic characterization and computational chemistry analyses were employed. The new compounds, 1-(2-benzamide)-3-(3-nitrophenyl) triazene (m-TZN) and 1-(2-benzamide)-3-(4-nitrophenyl) triazene (p-TZN), were compared to 1,3-diphenyltriazene (dph-TZN) to understand the effects of functionalization and targeted triazene deprotonation. The anionic forms are stable, and our investigation suggests that these new compounds are suitable tridentate ligands that can act as chelating agents for metallic cations in stable complexes, similar to those found in vitamin B12.

METHODS

The absorption, vibrational, and electronic properties of the newly synthesized triazene compounds were extensively characterized using FT-IR/FT-Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Their distinct molecular properties, intramolecular hydrogen bond effects, stability, and electronic transitions were investigated using the ORCA software. These analyses involved DFT and TD-DFT calculations at the ωB97X-D3/Def2-TZVP level of theory with THF CPCM implicit solvation to determine the molecular topology and electronic structure. The advanced STEOM-DLPNO-CCSD method for excited states was employed, enabling an in-depth analysis of ground and excited-state chemistry, accounting for precise electronic correlation and solvation effects. Explicit THF solvation was tested on the full TD-DFT ωB97X-D3/Def2-TZVP level and using ONIOM on the STEOM calculation. Reactivity was studied using Fukui functions, and action as chelating agents was investigated using GFN-xTB2 and DFT.

Synthesis of Four-Membered BN3 Heterocycles by the Borylation of Triazenes

Borylated triazenes were synthesized by the dehydrocoupling of triazenes with 9-borabicyclo(3.3.1)nonane, by the condensation of triazenes with BEt₃, or by the reaction of sodium triazenides with dialkyl- or diarylboron halides. The structures of the products were found to depend on the size of the substituents. Sterically demanding mesityl groups at boron or nitrogen gave rise to open-chain structures, whereas smaller substituents led to the formation of novel BN₃ heterocycles.

Low-Coordinate Iron Chalcogenolates and Their Complexes with Diethyl Ether and Ammonia

Treatment of Fe{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂ with 2 equiv of the appropriate phenol or thiol affords the dimers {Fe(OC₆H₂-2,6-Bu^t₂-4-Me)₂}₂ (1) and {Fe(OC₆H₃-2,6-Bu^t₂)₂}₂ (2) or the monomeric Fe{SC₆H₃-2,6-(C₆H₃-2,6-Prⁱ₂)₂}₂ (3) in moderate to excellent yields. Recrystallization of 1 and 2 from diethyl ether gives the corresponding three-coordinate ether complexes Fe(OC₆H₃-2,6-Bu^t₂-4-Me)₂(OEt₂) (4) and Fe(OC₆H₃-2,6-Bu^t₂)₂(OEt₂) (5). In contrast, no diethyl ether complex is formed by the dithiolate 3. The ¹H NMR spectra of 4 and 5 show equilibria between the ether complexes and the base-free dimers. A comparison of these spectra with those of the dimeric 1 and 2 allows an unambiguous assignment of the paramagnetically shifted signals. Treatment of 1 with excess ammonia gives the tetrahedral diammine Fe(OC₆H₂-2,6-Bu^t₂-4-Me)₂(NH₃)₂ (6). Ammonia is strongly coordinated in 6, with no apparent loss of ammine ligand either in solution or upon heating under low pressure. In contrast, significantly weaker ammonia coordination is observed when dithiolate 3 is treated with excess ammonia, which gives the diammine Fe{SC₆H₃-2,6-(2,6-Prⁱ₂-C₆H₃)₂}₂(NH₃)₂ (7). Complex 7 readily loses ammonia either in solution or under reduced pressure to give the monoammine complex Fe{SC₆H₃-2,6-(2,6-Prⁱ₂-C₆H₃)₂}₂(NH₃) (8). The weak binding of ammonia by iron thiolate 7 reflects the likely behavior of the proposed iron-sulfur active site in nitrogenases, where release of ammonia is required to close the catalytic cycle.

Synthetic, Structural, and Computational Studies on Heavier Tetragen and Chalcogen Triazenide Complexes

The syntheses of the triazenide complexes [{N(N^Dipp)₂}₂M] (Dipp = 2,6-di-isopropylphenyl; M = Ge(II) (1), Sn(II) (2), Pb(II) (3), and Te(II) (5)) are described for the first time. These compounds have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations were employed to confirm the presence and nature of the stereochemically active lone pairs in 1-5, alongside the Gibbs energy changes for their general synthesis, which enable the rationalization of observed reactivities.
