Structure and drug delivery relationship of acidic polysaccharides: A review

Scientists from across the world are being inspired by recent development in polysaccharides and their use in medical administration. Due to their extraordinary physical, chemical, and biological characteristics, polysaccharides are excellent materials for use in medicine. Acidic polysaccharides, which include Pectin, Xanthan gum, Carrageenan, Alginate, and Glycosaminoglycan, are natural polymers with carboxyl groups that are being researched for their potential as drug delivery systems. Most publications do not discuss how the different polysaccharides interact structurally in terms of drug delivery, which limits the scope of their use. The purpose of this review is to inform readers about the structural activity correlations between acidic polysaccharides, their different modification process and effects of combination of various acidic polysaccharides which have been used in drug delivery systems and expanding their potential applications, and bringing new perspectives to the fore.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Boosting the Study of Polymer Science

The past one hundred years witness the great development of polymer science. The advancement of polymer science is closely related with the developing of characterization techniques and methods, from viscometry in molecular weight determination to advanced techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance and scanning electron microscopy. However, these techniques are normally constrained to tedious sample preparation, high cost, harsh experimental condition, or ex-situ characterization. Fluorescence technology has the merits of high sensitivity and direct visualization. Contrary to conventional aggregation-causing quenching fluorophores, those dyes with aggregation-induced emission characteristic show high emission efficiency in aggregate states. Based on the restriction of intramolecular motions for AIE properties, the AIE materials are very sensitive to the surrounding microenvironments owing to the twisted propeller-like structures and therefore reveal great potentials in polymer's study. The AIE concept has been successfully used in polymer's study and provides us a deeper understanding on polymer structure and properties. In this review, the applications of AIEgens in polymer science for visualizing polymerization, glass transition, dissolution, crystallization, gelation, self-assembly, phase separation, cracking and self-healing were exemplified and summarized. Luminescent κ-Carrageenan-Based Electrolytes Containing Neodymium Triflate

In recent years, the synthesis of polymer electrolyte systems derived from biopolymers for the development of sustainable green electrochemical devices has attracted great attention. Here electrolytes based on the red seaweeds-derived polysaccharide κ-carrageenan (κ-Cg) doped with neodymium triflate (NdTrif₃) and glycerol (Gly) were obtained by means of a simple, clean, fast, and low-cost procedure. The aim was to produce near-infrared (NIR)-emitting materials with improved thermal and mechanical properties, and enhanced ionic conductivity. Cg has a particular interest, due to the fact that it is a renewable, cost-effective natural polymer and has the ability of gelling in the presence of certain alkali- and alkaline-earth metal cations, being good candidates as host matrices for accommodating guest cations. The as-synthesised κ-Cg-based membranes are semi-crystalline, reveal essentially a homogeneous texture, and exhibit ionic conductivity values 1⁻2 orders of magnitude higher than those of the κ-Cg matrix. A maximum ionic conductivity was achieved for 50 wt.% Gly/κ-Cg and 20 wt.% NdTrif₃/κ-Cg (1.03 × 10-4, 3.03 × 10-4, and 1.69 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 30, 60, and 97 °C, respectively). The NdTrif-based κ-Cg membranes are multi-wavelength emitters from the ultraviolet (UV)/visible to the NIR regions, due to the κ-Cg intrinsic emission and to Nd3+, ⁴F3/2→⁴I11/2-9/2.

Facile preparation of monolithic κ-carrageenan aerogels

To the best of our knowledge, it is the first study reporting the synthesis of monolithic κ-carrageenan aerogels with meso- and macroporous structures, being unique in physical and chemical properties. We demonstrate a novel method to synthesize κ-carrageenan aerogels in which potassium thiocyanate was used as the source of specific ions. Aerogels were characterized by envelope density analysis, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray powder diffractometry and IR spectroscopy. By varying the concentration of κ-carrageenan between 0.5 and 3 wt%, the envelope density can be linearly increased from 40 to 160 kg m⁻³. The sulphate functional groups in the wet gel and the specific ions are the key factors controlling the volume shrinkage of aerogels which average about 66%. The aerogels exhibit a fibrillar structure similar to cellulose aerogels. The fibril thickness was observed to be 10-15 nm and the specific surface area was about 230 m² g⁻¹. The existing meso- and macroporous structures were confirmed by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The aerogels were completely pure, free of specific ions and confirmed to be amorphous by powder X-ray diffraction. Hence, these porous materials can provide a matrix with a chelating function which can be used as a host in many applications.

Cation effect on slow release from alginate beads: a fluorescence study

In this study, spherical alginate beads containing pyranine (P y ) as a fluorescence probe were prepared by ionotropic gelation of a sodium alginate solution. The steady state fluorescence technique was used to study pyranine release from the alginate beads crosslinked with calcium, barium and aluminum ions, respectively. The slow release of P y was observed with the time drive mode of the spectrophotometer at 512 nm. Fluorescence emission intensity (I p ) from P y was monitored during the release process, and the encapsulation efficiency (EE) of pyranine from the alginate beads was calculated. The Fickian Diffusion model was used to measure the release coefficients, D sl . It was seen that the slow release coefficients of pyranine from the alginate beads crosslinked with Ca(2+), Ba(2+), and Al(3+) ions increased in the following order: D sl (Al(3+))> D sl (Ca(2+))> D sl (Ba(2+)). In contrast, the initial amount of pyranine and EE into the beads showed the reverse behavior.
