Abstract
A new pH-sensitive intelligent packaging system was developed composed of extracted and purified basil seed gum (BG) containing aqueous malva sylvestris extract (MS) and varying amounts of synthesized graphene oxide (GO). In the following, the characteristics of prepared films including spectroscopic, physio-mechanical, thermogravimetry, fracture-surface morphology, anthocyanin release, and pH and TVB-N sensitivity, were investigated. Our results revealed that the addition of 0.5 wt % MS into the BG matrix induced pH sensitivity to the film and resulted in a visible color change from pH 2.0 to 14.0; however, it reduced the thermal and physio-mechanical properties. In this regard, the effective presence of the optimum concentration of GO (0.25 wt%) in enhancing the mechanical and thermal properties of the BG-MS films was shown. Moreover, inspecting the release kinetics demonstrated a controllable release for BG-MS-GO film compared to the BG-MS film in 48 h. Furthermore, the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) content and pH value were shown to be highly correlated with the color changes of the freshness indicator film during the storage of salmon fillets at 25 °C for 36 h. Therefore, it was shown that BG-MS-GO film can be used as a highly effective freshness/spoilage indicator of proteinic products.

Abstract
The harmful effects of antibiotic proliferation on the environment and its persistent nature are urgent global problems. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is a fluoroquinolone-class antibiotic agent used widely to treat pathogen-related diseases in humans and animals. Its excretion into surface water causes antibiotic resistance in microbes, resulting in difficult-to-treat or untreatable infectious diseases. This study developed a simple and efficient electrochemical sensor to detect CIP. Hydrothermal chemistry was utilized to synthesize an electrophotocatalytic composite of copper-iron mixed metal oxides (CIMMO) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (CIMMO/rGO). The composite was employed in an electrochemical sensor and exhibited outstanding performance in detecting CIP. The sensor was operated in differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) mode under light source illumination. The sensor yielded a linear response in the concentration range of 0.75 × 10-9-1.0 × 10-7 mol L-1 CIP and showed a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.74 × 10-10 mol L-1. The excellent sensing performance of the composite is attributable to the synergic effects between CIMMO nanoparticles and rGO, which facilitate photoinduced electron-hole separation and assist in the indirect electrochemical reactions/interactions with CIP.

Abstract
Konjac glucomannan (KGM) combined with hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose was used to fabricate diacylglycerol oleogels (DGOs) through the emulsion-templated method, and compared with triacylglycerol oleogels (TGOs). The appearance and microstructure results showed that stable emulsions and oleogels could be formed in the presence of 0.2-0.6 wt% KGM. Higher KGM concentrations resulted in a stronger gel structure in oleogels, whose thixotropic recovery percentages were 50.45-75.20 %. From LF-NMR determination, the higher concentration of KGM presented earlier transverse relaxation (T2) time, and the T2 parameters of DGOs were higher than that of TGOs. Texture and oil loss analysis indicated that the mechanical strength and oil holding ability of DGOs were slightly lower than those of TGOs. This study demonstrated the advantages of biopolymers as thickening agents for obtaining stable emulsion and oleogels. The specific characteristics of DGOs distinguished from TGOs should be attributed to their different properties (unsaturation, viscosity, polarity, etc.) between the liquid oils.

Abstract
In this article, the enrichment of graphene and graphene oxide with free radicals through their functionalization with tyrosine is studied. In contrast with what is commonly observed in the functionalization of graphene with organic species the addition of tyrosine radicals on to the graphene substrate led to a remarkable increase of the aromatic character as indicated by the spectroscopic data. Similar behaviour was observed for the functionalization of graphene oxide. In addition, a brief analysis of the tyrosine functionalized graphene with EPR spectroscopy showed a remarkable enhancement of the spin density that could be useful in spintronics.

Abstract
Water pollution due to heavy metal ions has become a persistent and increasing problem globally. To combat this, carbonaceous materials have been explored as possible adsorbents of these metal ions from solution. The problem with using these materials on their own is that their lifespan and, therefore, usability is reduced. Hence the need to mask them and an interest in using polymers to do so is picked. This introduces an improvement into other properties as well and opens the way for more applications. This work gives a detailed review of the major carbonaceous materials, graphene and graphene oxide, outlining their origin as well as morphological studies. It also outlines the findings on their effectiveness in removing heavy metal ions from water, as well as their water absorption properties. The section further reports on graphene/polymer and graphene oxide/polymer composites previously studied and their morphological as well as thermal properties. Then the work done in the absorption and adsorption capabilities of these composites is explored, thereby contrasting the two materials. This enables us to choose the optimal material for the desired outcome of advancing further in the utilization of carbonaceous material-based polymer composites to remove heavy metal ions from water.

Abstract
In addition to their antioxidant and antimicrobial action in functional foods, beverages, and in some dermato-cosmetic products, olive phenolic compounds are also recognized for their role in the prevention of diabetes and inflammation, treatment of heart disease and, consequently, of the numerous chronic diseases mediated by the free radicals. In recent years, attention has increased, in particular, regarding one of the most important compound in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) having glycosidic structure, namely verbocoside, due to the existence in the literature of numerous studies demonstrating its remarkable contribution to the prophylaxis and treatment of various disorders of the human body. The purpose of this study was the qualitative and quantitative determination of verbascoside in commercial EVOOs from different regions by means of a newly developed sensor based on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with graphene oxide (GPHOX), on the surface of which a pentapeptide was immobilized by means of glutaraldehyde as cross-linking agent. The modified electrode surface was investigated using both Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. This newly developed sensor has shown a high sensibility compared to the unmodified electrode, a low detection limit (LOD) of up to 9.38 × 10-8 M, and a wide linearity range between 0.1 µM and 10.55 µM. The applicability of the modified sensor was confirmed by detecting verbascoside in ten different EVOOs samples using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) method, with very good results. The validation of the electroanalytical method was performed by using the standard addition method with very good recoveries in the range of 97.48-103.77%.

Abstract
Over the past few years, there is a drive toward the fabrication and application of bio-based non-cytotoxic drug carriers. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have gotten immense research attention as a promising bioderived material in the biomedical field due to its remarkable properties. The delivery of analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug, ketorolac tromethamine (KT) by transdermal route is stipulated herewith to fabricate suitable transdermal therapeutic systems. We have synthesized CNCs from jute fibers and aim to develop a non-cytotoxic polymer-based bionanocomposites (BNCs) transdermal patch, formulated with methylcellulose (MC), chitosan (CH), along with exploration of CNCs for sustained delivery of KT, where CNCs act as nanofiller and elegant nanocarrier. CNCs reinforced MCCH blends were prepared via the solvent evaporation technique. The chemical structure, morphology, and thermal stability of the prepared bionanocomposites formulations were studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), TGA, DSC, DMA, and SEM. The In vitro drug release studies were executed using Franz diffusion cells. The BNC patches showed in-vitro cytocompatibility and the drug release study revealed that BNC containing 1 wt% CNCs presented the best-sustained drug release profile. The bioderived CNCs appear to enhance the BNCs drug's bioavailability, which could have a broad prospect for TDD applications.

Abstract
The prevailing studies were carried out to formulate and optimize the quetiapine transdermal matrix patch by the usage of Box-Behnken design for ameliorated bioavailability when contrasted with conventional drug delivery. The Box-Behnken design with three-level and three-factor was utilized to explore the intermingle impact of critical attributes on tensile strength, in vitro drug release, and flux. Optimized formulation was characterized for Fourier transform infrared, differential scanning calorimetry, in vivo pharmacokinetics, and skin irritation along with stability studies. The inference of the finalized batch (F14) depicted the flux of 51.81 ± 0.32 µg/h/cm2, TS of 6.46 ± 0.56 MPa, and the % drug release after 20 h of 82.98 ± 1.48% with no remarkable variation even after 6 months stability studies. Correlation between predicted and the observed values of the dependent variables was very closer. Optimized quetiapine transdermal patch did not exert any symptoms of skin irritation. The bioavailability of quetiapine was enhanced almost 4.59 times after topical delivery when contrasted with the conventional dosage form. The outputs of the research work divulged that the developed matrix patch of quetiapine for transdermal drug delivery can be a propitious opportunity that affords effective treatment of schizophrenia. Novelty statement The oral route is not suitable for the drugs having extensive first-pass metabolism which leads to reduced bioavailability. For the parenteral route, invasiveness causes the patient noncompliance while sterility contributes to the cost factor. Moreover, the treatment of schizophrenic patients is a challenging task for caregivers and doctors. Hence, the transdermal patch of quetiapine was developed to bypass the biotransformation of drugs and thereby to enhance the bioavailability as well as to provide sustained drug delivery which ultimately reduces the dosage frequency.

Abstract
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a common hydrophilic and biodegradable polymer that can form films. This study incorporated aluminum nanoadditives as an enhancement reagent into a HPMC matrix. Mechanical properties of nanocompoistes, including the tensile strength and the elastic modulus, were analyzed with a nano-tensile tester. The incorporation of additives in HPMC films significantly enhances their mechanical and film barrier properties. Evidence of bonding between the additive and matrix was observed by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer analysis. The additives occupy the spaces in the pores of the matrix, which increases the tendency of the pore to collapse and improves the chemical bonding between the base material and the additives. The incorporation of excess additives decreases the tensile strength due to ineffective collisions between the additives and the matrix. The wear test proves that the addition of nano-additives can improve the tribology performance of the HPMC composite while reducing the wear volume and the friction. Bonding between the nanoadditives and the matrix does not help release the nanoadditives into the wear interface as a third-body layer. The main reason to enhance the tribology performance is that the nanoadditives improve the load-capacity of the composite coating. This hybrid composite can be useful in many sustainability applications.

Abstract
Bacteriorhodopsin-embedded purple membranes (PM) have been demonstrated to be a sensitive photoelectric transducer for microbial detection. To efficiently prepare versatile BR-based immunosensors with protein A as antibody captures, a large, high-coverage, and uniformly oriented PM monolayer was fabricated on an electrode as an effective foundation for protein A conjugation through bis-NHS esters, by first affinity-coating biotinylated PM on an aminated surface using a complex of oxidized avidin and graphene oxide as the planar linker and then washing the coating with a shear flow. Three different polyclonal antibodies, each against Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Streptococcus mutans, respectively, were individually, effectively and readily adsorbed on the protein A coated electrodes, leading to selective and sensitive quantitative detection of their respective target cells in a single step without any labeling. A single-cell detection limit was achieved for the former two cells. AFM, photocurrent, and Raman analyses all displayed each fabricated layer as well as the captured bacteria, with AFM particularly revealing the formation of a massive continuous PM monolayer on aminated mica. The facile cell-membrane monolayer fabrication and membrane surface conjugation techniques disclosed in this study may be widely applied to the preparation of different biomembrane-based biosensors.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) has been used as a delivery vehicle for small molecule drugs and nucleotides. To further investigate GO as a smart biomaterial for the controlled release of cargo molecules, we hypothesized that GO may be an appropriate delivery vehicle because it releases bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2). GO characterization indicated that the size distribution of the GO flakes ranged from 81.1 nm to 45,749.7 nm, with an approximate thickness of 2 nm. After BMP2 adsorption onto GO, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis were performed. Compared to GO, BMP2-GO did not induce significant changes in the characteristics of the materials. GO continuously released BMP2 for at least 40 days. Bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) and chondrocytes were treated with BMP2-GO in interleukin-1 media and assessed in terms of cell viability, flow cytometric characterization, and expression of particular mRNA. Compared to GO, BMP2-GO did not induce any significant changes in biocompatibility. We treated osteoarthritic rats with BMP2 and BMP2-GO, which showed significant differences in Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) scores (P<0.05). Quantitative assessment revealed significant differences compared to that using BMP2 and BMP2-GO (P<0.05). These findings indicate that GO may be potentially used to control the release of carrier materials. The combination of BMP2 and GO slowed the progression of NF-κB-activated degenerative changes in osteoarthritis. Therefore, we infer that our BMP2-GO strategy could alleviate the NF-κB pathway by inducing continuous BMP2 release.

Abstract
Polymer nanocomposites are increasingly important in food packaging sectors. Biopolymer pullulan is promising in manufacturing packaging films or coatings due to its excellent optical clarity, mechanical strength, and high water-solubility as compared to other biopolymers. This work aims to enhance its oxygen barrier properties and overcome its intrinsic brittleness by utilizing two-dimensional planar graphene oxide (GO) nanoplatelets. It has been found that the addition of only 0.2 wt% of GO enhanced the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break of pullulan films by about 40, 44 and 52%, respectively. The light transmittance at 550 nm of the pullulan/GO films was 92.3% and haze values were within 3.0% threshold, which meets the general requirement for food packaging materials. In particular, the oxygen permeability coefficient of pullulan was reduced from 6337 to 2614 mL μm m(-2) (24 h(-1)) atm(-1) with as low as 0.05 wt% of GO loading and further to 1357 mL μm m(-2) (24 h(-1)) atm(-1) when GO concentration reached 0.3 wt%. The simultaneous improvement of the mechanical and oxygen barrier properties of pullulan was ascribed to the homogeneous distribution and prevalent unidirectional alignment of GO nanosheets, as determined from the characterization and theoretical modelling results. The exceptional oxygen barrier properties of pullulan/GO nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical flexibility and good optical clarity will add new values to high performance food packaging materials.
