Synthesis of MnO 2 /cellulose fiber nanocomposites for rapid adsorption of insecticide compound and optimization by response surface methodology

A novel green synthesis of MnO2-Coal composite for rapid removal of silver and lead from wastewater

The presence of Ag(I) and Pb(II) ions in wastewater poses a significant threat to human health in contemporary times. This study aims to explore the development of a novel and economical adsorbent by grafting MnO2 particles onto low-rank coal, providing an innovative solution for the remediation of water contaminated with silver and lead. The synthesized nanocomposites, referred to as MnO2-Coal, underwent thorough characterization using FTIR, XRD, BET, and SEM to highlight the feasibility of in-situ surface modification of coal with MnO2 nanoparticles. The adsorption of Ag(I) and Pb(II) from their respective aqueous solution onto MnO2-Coal was systematically investigated, with optimization of key parameters such as pH, temperature, initial concentration, contact time, ionic strength, and competing ions. Remarkably adsorption equilibrium was achieved within a 10 min, resulting in impressive removal rates of 80-90 % for both Ag(I) and Pb(II) at pH 6. The experimental data were evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The Langmuir isotherm model proved to be more accurate in representing the adsorption of Ag(I) and Pb(II) ions onto MnO2-Coal, exhibiting high regression coefficients (R2 = 0.99) and maximum adsorption capacities of 93.57 and 61.98 mg/g, along with partition coefficients of 4.53 and 71.92 L/g for Ag(I) and Pb(II), respectively, at 293 K. Kinetic assessments employing PFO, PSO, Elovich, and IPD models indicated that the PFO and PSO models were most suitable for adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) and Ag(I) on MnO2-Coal composites, respectively. Moreover, thermodynamic evaluation revealed the spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process for Ag(I), while exothermic behavior for adsorption of Pb(II). Importantly, this approach not only demonstrates cost-effectiveness but also environmental friendliness in treating heavy metal-contamination in water. The research suggests the potential of MnO2-Coal composites as efficient and sustainable adsorbents for water purification applications.

Mussel-inspired magnetic adsorbent MnO2/PDA@Fe3O4 for removing heavy metal ions contaminants in single and mixed systems

Heavy metal pollution has been a magnificent concern for a long period. A novel magnetic material, MnO₂/PDA@Fe₃O₄, was prepared in this paper. With the assistance of multiple characterization methods, it was confirmed that polydopamine coated the magnetic nucleus and acted as a dense intermediate layer for MnO₂ attachment. Having superior adsorption performance, MnO₂/PDA@Fe₃O₄ could remove heavy metal cations efficiently no matter in single or mixed systems. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated by the Langmuir model for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) were 295.01 mg/g, 130.30 mg/g, and 115.16 mg/g, respectively. In mixed systems, the adsorbent showed obvious selectivity for Pb(II). And the variation of Cu(II) concentration was more responsible for Pb(II) adsorption than that of Cd(II). The kinetic and thermodynamic data revealed that the polluted ions immobilizations by MnO₂/PDA@Fe₃O₄ were chemisorption and were endothermic, entropy increase, spontaneous process. The presence of humic acid and coexisting ions induced only a very limited interference. In addition, MnO₂/PDA@Fe₃O₄ maintained excellent adsorption performance and stability after five cycles of adsorption and removed 98.33% Pb(II) and 71.24% Cu(II) from actual water, respectively. This study confirmed that the MnO₂/PDA@Fe₃O₄ had great potential and broad prospects to remediate the heavy metal contaminants in water.

Adsorption of thorium (IV) ions using a novel borate-based nano material Ca3Y2B4O12: Application of response surface methodology and Artificial Neural Network

Since nuclear wastes are the most important wastes in terms of health and the environment, they are evaluated differently within nuclear reactors as well as in terms of their use in medical and industrial applications. In some cases, emergency intervention is necessary due to the amount of radioactivity or the physical and/or chemical conditions. . The purpose of this study is to investigate the adsorption properties of nano Ca₃Y₂B₄O₁₂ (CYBO) material synthesized by the sol-gel combustion method for the adsorption of Thorium (IV) from an aqueous medium. We tested how pH (3-8), the concentration of Th (IV) (25-125 mg/L), amount of adsorbent value (0.005-0.08 g) and temperature (20-60 °C), affect adsorption efficiency. The best possible combinations of these parameters were examined by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). R² values for RSM and ANN were 0.9964 and 0.9666, respectively. According to the models, the adsorption capacity under the optimum conditions determined for the RSM and ANN model was found to be 134.62 mg/g and 125.12 mg/g, respectively.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of MnO2 nanosorbent for adsorptive removal of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from water solutions

In this study, a flower-like porous δ-MnO₂ nanostructure was synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal process for adsorptive removal of strontium (Sr(II)) and cesium (Cs(I)) from wastewater. The prepared δ-MnO₂ nanosorbent exhibited superior affinity for Sr(II) over Cs(I) in the single-solute system, with partition coefficient (PC) values of 10.2 and 2.3 L/g, respectively, at pH 6.0. In the two-solute system, the flower-like δ-MnO₂ also adsorbed Sr(II) (PC = 3.81 L/g) more selectively than Cs(I) (PC 1.15 L/g). Further, their adsorption capacities decreased by 12 and 16%, respectively, relative to the single-solute system. In contrast, adsorption of the ions onto δ-MnO₂ was affected less sensitively in dual than in single system when changes occurred in environmental variables such as pH (2-8) and ionic strength (1-100 mM). Adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherm studies demonstrated the pivotal role of the monolayer surface active sites of endothermic δ-MnO₂ (e.g., a complexation interaction with Mn-OH). Furthermore, the δ-MnO₂ nanosorbent exhibited good regenerability, retaining more than 80% of its adsorption capacity when tested over four reuse cycles. The overall results of this study are expected to help establish strategies to effectively remove metal contaminants from wastewater using a green and low-cost hierarchical nanosorbent.

Use of Biochar from Rice Husk Pyrolysis: Part A: Recovery as an Adsorbent in the Removal of Emerging Compounds

One of the main products of pyrolysis is char. For the better performance and improvement of its physicochemical properties, it is necessary to make temperature changes. In this study, different temperatures have been tested for the pyrolysis of rice husk, and the biochar obtained from the process went through an evaluation to test its yield in the removal of emerging compounds such as azithromycin (AZT) and erythromycin (ERY). For this, pyrolysis of rice husk has been carried out at temperatures of 450, 500, 550, and 600 °C, and the biochars have been characterized by ultimate analysis and proximate analysis, as well as specific surface area tests. Then, different adsorption tests have been carried out with a 200 mg L^-1 drug (AZT and ERY) solution prepared in the laboratory. All biochars have been found to present removal percentages higher than 95%. Therefore, obtaining biochar from rice husk at any temperature and using it in the removal of high-molecular-weight compounds are quite suitable.

Sustainable materials in the removal of pesticides from contaminated water: Perspective on macro to nanoscale cellulose

Recently, over utilization of pesticides in agrarian and non- agrarian sectors has resulted in a significant increment in the deposition of their remnants in different segments of the environmental media. The presence of pesticides and transportation of their different metabolites in rivers, ponds, lakes, soils, air, groundwater sources and drinkable water sources has demonstrated a high threat to human wellbeing and the climate. Thus, the removal of pesticides and their metabolites from contaminated water is imperative to lessen the ill effects of pesticides on human beings. In the present article, we have appraised recent advances in pesticides removal utilizing low cost pristine and functionalized cellulose biomass-based derivatives. One of the key focus has been on better understand the destiny of pesticides in the environment as well as their behaviour in the water. In addition, the impact of magnetite cellulose nanocomposites, cellulose derived photo nano-catalyst, cellulose/clay nano composites, CdS/cellulose nanocomposites and activated carbons/biochar on percent removal of pesticides have also been a part of the current review. The impact of different parameters such as adsorbent dosage, pH, time of contact and initials pesticide concentration on adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics followed during absorption by different cellulosic bio-adsorbents has also been given. The cellulosic biomass is highly efficient in the removal of pesticides and their efficiency further increases upon functionalization or their conversion into activated carbons forms. Nano particles loaded cellulosic materials have in general found to be less efficient than raw, functionalized cellulosic materials and activated carbons. Further, among different nano particles loaded with cellulose-based materials, cellulose/MnO₂ photonanocatalyst were noticed to be more effective. So considerable efforts should be given to determine the finest practices that relate to the dissipation of different pesticides from the water.

Rapid and effective photodynamic treatment of biofilm infections using low doses of amoxicillin-coated gold nanoparticles

Bacterial biofilm are complex microbial communities covered by a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances, which develops when a community of microorganisms irreversibly adheres to a living or inert surface. This structure is considered an important virulence factor because it is difficult to eradicate and often responsible for treatment failures. This adherent community represents one of the greatest problems in public health due to the continued emergence of conventional antibiotic-therapy resistance. Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy (PACT) is a therapeutic alternative and promises to be an effective treatment against multiresistant bacteria biofilm, demonstrating a broad spectrum of action. This work demonstrates the reduction in biofilms of relevant clinical isolates (as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus) treated with PACT using low concentrations of amoxicillin-coated gold nanoparticles (amoxi@AuNP) as a photosensitizer. Moreover, the viability reduction of 60% in S. aureus biofilms and 70% in P. aeruginosa biofilms were obtained after three hours of irradiation with white light and amoxi@AuNP. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that amoxi@AuNP could penetrate and cause damage to the biofilm matrix, and interact with bacteria cells. A strong biofilm production in P. aeruginosa was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy using acridine orange as a probe, and a markedly decrease in live bacteria was appreciated when PACT was applied. The use of amoxi@AuNP for PACT allows the viability reduction of clinical Gram positive and Gram negative biofilms. This novel strategy needs shorter irradiation times and lower concentrations of nanoparticles than other reports described. This could be attributed to two major innovations: the selectivity for the bacterial wall given by the amoxicillin and the polydispersity of size and shapes with seems to contribute to the photo-antibacterial capacity.

Recent trends of MnO2-derived adsorbents for water treatment: a review

Over the years, manganese dioxide (MnO₂) and its different allotropes have gained significant research attention in the field of wastewater treatment because of their exciting physicochemical properties.

Optimization of Pb(II) ions adsorption on nanohydroxyapatite adsorbents by applying Taguchi method

This paper presents an optimization approach for the removal of lead ions (Pb⁺²) by nano-hydroxyapatite powder form adsorbents that were produced from bovine bone by mechanical activation method. The Taguchi method was implemented for designing the experiments by considering four controllable factors including (1) ball milling time (A), (2) the initial concentration of lead ions (B), (3) initial pH of the solution (C); and (4) the adsorbent dosage (D), each factor at four different levels. According to the ANOVA analysis results, the removal efficiency of the lead ions was predominantly influenced by the adsorbent dosage (38.2%) and the initial lead ions concentration (23.64%), whereas the effect of initial pH of the solution was ignorable and the ball milling time had a mild contribution of 14.79%. The total optimum adsorptive lead ions removal of 100% was achieved by optimization process at operating conditions of C_o = 180 mg L^{- 1}, ball milling time = 2 h, pH = 3, and adsorbent dosage = 0.15 g. The Langmuir isotherm model fitted to the equilibrium results with good accuracy and a maximum sorption capacity of 200 mg g^-1 was predicted by the model for the hydroxyapatite adsorbent ball milled for 2 h.

Molecular aspects of core-shell intrinsic defect induced enhanced antibacterial activity of ZnO nanocrystals

AIM

To investigate molecular aspects of the antibacterial effect of size-dependent core-shell intrinsic defects of nanocrystalline ZnO synthesized through high energy ball milling technique.

MATERIALS & METHODS

Mechanically synthesized and characterized 7, 10 and 15 h milled ZnO nanoparticles were evaluated for antibacterial activity with molecular investigation by computational molecular docking.

RESULTS

Synthesized ZnO nanoparticles displayed shrinkage of core and increase of shell with reduction in size of bulk ZnO particles from 250 to 80, 40 and 20 nm and increase in zeta potential up to -19 mV in 7, 10 and 15 h nano ZnO. Antibacterial activity was found increased with decrease in size due to increased reactive oxygen species and membrane damage in bacteria.

CONCLUSION

Synthesized nano ZnO exhibit size-dependent antibacterial action as consequences of interactions with cell membrane proteins via hydrogen bond interaction with amino acid residues followed by internalization, membrane depolarization and induction of reactive oxygen species generation.
