Abstract
This review investigates the most recent advances in personalized 3D-printed wound dressings and skin scaffolding. Skin is the largest and most vulnerable organ in the human body. The human body has natural mechanisms to restore damaged skin through several overlapping stages. However, the natural wound healing process can be rendered insufficient due to severe wounds or disturbances in the healing process. Wound dressings are crucial in providing a protective barrier against the external environment, accelerating healing. Although used for many years, conventional wound dressings are neither tailored to individual circumstances nor specific to wound conditions. To address the shortcomings of conventional dressings, skin scaffolding can be used for skin regeneration and wound healing. This review thoroughly investigates polysaccharides (e.g., chitosan, Hyaluronic acid (HA)), proteins (e.g., collagen, silk), synthetic polymers (e.g., Polycaprolactone (PCL), Poly lactide-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), Polylactic acid (PLA)), as well as nanocomposites (e.g., silver nano particles and clay materials) for wound healing applications and successfully 3D printed wound dressings. It discusses the importance of combining various biomaterials to enhance their beneficial characteristics and mitigate their drawbacks. Different 3D printing fabrication techniques used in developing personalized wound dressings are reviewed, highlighting the advantages and limitations of each method. This paper emphasizes the exceptional versatility of 3D printing techniques in advancing wound healing treatments. Finally, the review provides recommendations and future directions for further research in wound dressings.

Abstract
UV radiation was combined with the incorporation of fish protein hydrolysates to improve the performance of active bio-based films for food packaging. UV radiation was not used previously to enhance the packaging performance of blend films of starch/protein, and fish protein hydrolysates were not incorporated in bio-based polymer surfaces previously. Rice starch and fish proteins (from Whitemouth croaker muscle) were utilized to prepare films by the casting technique, which were UV-radiated under different exposure times (1, 5, and 10 min). The packaging performance of the films was determined according to the mechanical and barrier performance, solubility, and color. Fish protein hydrolysates (from Argentine croaker muscle) were then incorporated into the films (bulk structure or surface). The results showed that UV radiation for 1 min increased the tensile strength and modified the optical properties of films. It also altered the structure of the polymeric matrix, as demonstrated by the microstructure and thermal analysis, in agreement with the data obtained in packaging properties. The evaluation of antioxidant capacity through 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) and reducing power indicated that incorporating fish protein hydrolysates either in the films' bulk structure or film surface promoted antioxidant properties; control films (produced with rice starch/fish proteins without hydrolysates) also presented antioxidant potential. According to the peroxide value and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) assays, control films and the films containing hydrolysates in their bulk structure or on the surface could prevent the lipid oxidation of Italian salami. Thus, combining UV radiation to shape the characteristics of bio-based materials with fish protein hydrolysates to reduce lipid oxidation contributes to the performance of active bio-based films for food packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan-pectin emulsion-filled hydrogel (EFH) was developed to enhance the bioaccessibility of lipophilic bioactive compounds through intestinal delivery. The EFH, incorporating a sodium caseinate-stabilized emulsion, was prepared using cold-set gelation under acidic conditions without crosslinking agents. Increasing the pectin concentration (0.75-1.50%, w/v) improved the mechanical strength and compactness of the EFH. The pH-responsive EFH retained the emulsion at pH 2.0 and released it at pH 7.4. In vitro digestion demonstrated that the EFH remained intact during oral and gastric stages, while the emulsion alone became destabilized. During intestinal digestion, the release of free fatty acids from the EFH decreased from 58.67% to 43.76% as the pectin concentration increased from 0.75% to 1.50%. EFH with 0.75% and 1.00% pectin significantly improved curcumin bioaccessibility compared to the emulsion alone. These findings demonstrate the potential of chitosan-pectin EFH as a novel carrier system for enhancing the bioaccessibility of lipophilic bioactive compounds.

Abstract
5-F-lourouracil is an anticancer drug used for the treatment of different types of cancers. 5-flourouracil loaded chitosan-banana peel extract films were prepared for the in vitro drug release studies. Solvent casting technique was employed to prepare the films. The structure and morphology of the prepared films were analysed by FTIR, XRD and SEM methods and confirmed the presence of drug in the films. The drug loaded films show excellent thermal stability and good shelf life. Studies revealed that the percentage of banana peel extract influences the swelling properties of the film, thickness of the films and release of the drug from the films. Increase in the concentration of chitosan and banana peel extract decreases the swelling properties of the film and rate of release of the drug from the film. The release rate of 5-fluorouracil from the drug loaded chitosan-banana peel extract films were followed spectrophotometrically at λmax 266 nm and the film derived from 1 % chitosan solution and 1 mL aqueous banana peel extract (saturated) exhibited maximum drug release. Cytotoxicity studies proved that the films are non-toxic in nature and augurs well for their applications as excellent drug delivery systems. Antimicrobial studies show that the drug loaded chitosan-banana peel extract films were found to be active against microbes E. coli, Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger and inactive against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Abstract
The present work deals with the eco-friendly preparation of highly degradable food packaging films consisting of O-CMC (O-Carboxymethyl Chitosan) and pectin, incorporated with neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves powder and extract. This study aimed to investigate the tensile properties, antimicrobial activity, biodegradability, and thermal behavior of the composite films. The results of tensile strength and elongation at break, showed that the incorporation of neem leaves powder improved the tensile properties (7.11 MPa) of the composite films compared to the neat O-CMC and pectin films (3.02 MPa). The antimicrobial activity of the films was evaluated against a panel of microorganisms including both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. The composite films exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity with a zone of inhibition (12-17.6 mm) against the tested microorganisms. The opacity of the composite films ranges from 1.14 to 4.40 mm-1 and the addition of fiber causes a decrease in opacity value. Biodegradability studies were conducted by Soil burial method and the films demonstrated complete biodegradability within 75 days. The results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of composite films show that they are thermally stable and might be used in food packaging.

Abstract
The oral delivery of anti-inflammatory drugs has been a promising strategy for enhancing the clinical efficacy of ulcerative colitis (UC) treatment strategies. However, achieving site specific drug delivery to colon tissues and target cells is a challenging task for formulation scientists. In this study, macrophages-targeted liposome-loaded pectin-chitosan hydrogels were developed for UC treatment via oral administration. Folate-functionalized cholesterol was synthesized as lipid membrane materials for the liposomes containing curcumin (CUR). The incorporation of the liposomal CUR within pectin-chitosan hydrogels resulted in a matrix that exhibited considerable sensitivity to colonic enzymes during in vitro release. The targeted delivery of hybrids was able to effectively reach macrophages. They also showed enhanced capability to downregulate TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β in the lipopolysaccharide-induced Raw 264.7 cells model. DSS-induced mice modelshowed improved anti-UC effects, including accelerated mucosal repair and decreased inflammation and modulate the immune balance in the intestinal tissue of mice with colitis, which may be attributable to increased drug accumulation in the colonic lumen and improved internalization to target cells. Therefore, the incorporation of folate-modified liposomes containing CUR and pectin-chitosan physical hydrogels could potentially serve as a favorable approach for treating UC through an oral colon-targeted drug delivery system.

Abstract
Challenges for the food/non-food applications of starch mostly arise from its low stability against severe processing conditions (i.e. elevated temperatures, pH variations, intense shear forces), inordinate retrogradability, as well as restricted applicability. These drawbacks have been addressed through the modification of starch. The escalating awareness of individuals toward the presumptive side effects of chemical modification approaches has engrossed the attention of scientists to the development of physical modification procedures. In this regard, starch treatment via ionizing (i.e. gamma, electron beam, and X-rays) and non-ionizing (microwave, radiofrequency, infrared, ultraviolet) radiations has been introduced as a potent physical strategy offering new outstanding attributes to the modified product. Ionizing radiations, through dose-dependent pathways, are able to provoke depolymerization or cross-linking/grafting reactions to the starch medium. While non-ionizing radiations could modify the starch attributes by changing the morphology/architecture of granules and inducing reorientation/rearrangement in the molecular order of starch amorphous/crystalline fractions.

Abstract
Chitosan is known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties that make it a promising candidate for plant protection. However, when sprayed in open fields, the bioactivity of chitosan significantly diminishes, suggesting a possible influence of sunlight on chitosan structure. This study aimed to investigate the effects of UV radiation, by using artificial UV sources simulating sunlight, on the stability of chitosan. A powdered chitosan with a low polymerization degree was selected and analyzed using various physicochemical methods, both before and after irradiation. Some minor differences appeared. UV spectra analysis revealed the disappearance of initially present chromophores and the emergence of a new band around 340 nm, potentially indicating the formation of carbonyl compounds. However, elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF spectra, polymerization degree, and infrared spectra did not exhibit any clear structural modifications of chitosan. Interestingly, irradiated powdered chitosan samples maintained their bioactivity, including their eliciting and antifungal properties. In the case of grapevine, irradiated chitosan demonstrated effectiveness in controlling grapevine diseases such as downy mildew, contradicting the assumption that sunlight is responsible for the decreased effectiveness of chitosan in open field conditions.

Abstract
Wastewater contains organic compounds, including dyes, which have potential risks to the environment. Hence, these compound needs to be eliminated from the aqueous solution. In the present study, chitosan-pectin composite (Cs-Pc) was used as an adsorbent to remove methylene blue dye (MB) from synthetic wastewater. To evaluate the parameters affecting adsorption, including the initial MB concentration, solution pH, contact time, and Cs-Pc dose, batch experiments were carried out. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and pH point of zero charges (pH pzc) were applied for characterizations of Cs-Pc. The optimum conditions were obtained with an initial MB concentration of 50 mg L-1: solution pH ~ 11, Cs-Pc dose: 1.5 g L-1 and 180 min contact time, which caused 97.77% of MB removal. In addition, the removal efficiency of MB was more influenced by pH than by sorbate dose. Also, Cs-Pc had a higher ability to remove MB than chitosan and pectin, probably due to its highly porous structure and rough surfaces that provides active sites and facilitate MB adsorption. The maximum removal efficiency and the adsorption capacity of MB onto Cs-Pc at 500 mg L-1 concentration under optimum conditions were 98.67% and 328.02 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were best described by pseudo-second-order and Freundlich equation, respectively. After four times of recycling, the removal efficiency of MB was above 96%. Electrostatic and pi-pi interactions are the main mechanisms for the removal of MB onto the adsorbent. So the application of Cs-Pc is promising for MB removal from polluted solutions not only due to its strong adsorbing capability but also due to its excellent ability to reuse.

Abstract
Demand for healthy, safe, and high-quality foods and disadvantages of thermal processing methods such as quality losses supported the improvement of the novel, affordable, and quick nonthermal food preservation techniques such as UV light. UV-C light (200-280 nm) radiation is an emerging technology for the disinfection of pathogen microorganisms, increasing the shelf life of foods, and used for pasteurization, surface sterilization, cleaning of equipment and water, and so on. Sensory perceptions of foods are effective on the consumer choice, acceptability, and consumption of foods. Rheology term, which also includes texture and mouthfeel, is primarily important for sensory perception, processing of foods, and shelf stability. Therefore, the determination of the effect of different processing methods on the textural and rheological properties of the food products is important. Rheological and textural changes generally occur in the surface of UV-C-irradiated samples due to the low penetration of UV-C light. The UV light treatment may cause internal disruption of cell membranes, which in turn cause loss of turgidity, weaken the cell walls, and contraction of tissues, which are related to the changes in the textural and rheological properties of foods. The present review focuses on the effect of UV-C radiation on the rheology and textural properties of food products.

Abstract
In the framework of designing a novel bio-coating for the preservation of fresh fruits, this paper reports the design, preparation, and characterization of novel bio-nanocomposites based on pectin loaded with grapefruit seed oil (GO), a natural compound with antimicrobial properties, encapsulated into halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The vacuum-based methodology was used for the encapsulation of the oil into the hollow area of the nanotubes, obtaining nano-hybrids (HNT-GO) with oil concentrations equal to 20, 30, and 50 wt%. Physical properties (thermal, mechanical, barrier, optical) were analyzed. Thermal properties were not significantly (p < 0.05) affected by the filler, while an improvement in mechanical performance (increase in elastic modulus, stress at breaking, and deformation at breaking up to 200%, 48%, and 39%, respectively, compared to pure pectin film) and barrier properties (increase in water permeability up to 480% with respect to pure pectin film) was observed. A slight increase in opacity was detected without significantly compromising the transparency of the films. The release of linoleic acid, the main component of GO, was followed for 21 days and was correlated with the amount of the hybrid filler, demonstrating the possibility of tailoring the release kinetic of active molecules. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the prepared bio-composites as an active coating, fresh strawberries were coated and compared to uncoated fruit. Qualitative results showed that the fabricated novel bio-coating efficiently extended the preservation of fresh fruit.

Abstract
This paper concerns the physicochemical properties of chitosan/phenolic acid thin films irradiated by ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths between 200 and 290 nm (UVC) light. We investigated the preparation and characterization of thin films based on chitosan (CTS) with tannic (TA), caffeic (CA) and ferulic acid (FA) addition as potential food-packaging materials. Such materials were then exposed to the UVC light (254 nm) for 1 and 2 h to perform the sterilization process. Different properties of thin films before and after irradiation were determined by various methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), mechanical properties and by the surface free energy determination. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of the films and their potential to reduce the risk of contamination was assessed. The results showed that the phenolic acid improving properties of chitosan-based films, short UVC radiation may be used as sterilization method for those films, and also that the addition of ferulic acid obtains effective antimicrobial activity, which have great benefit for food packing applications.

Abstract
Antimicrobial irradiated seaweed–neem biocomposite films were synthesized in this study. The storage functional properties of the films were investigated. Characterization of the prepared films was conducted using SEM, FT-IR, contact angle, and antimicrobial test. The macroscopic and microscopic including the analysis of the functional group and the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry test revealed the main active constituents present in the neem extract, which was used an essential component of the fabricated films. Neem leaves’ extracts with 5% w/w concentration were incorporated into the matrix of seaweed biopolymer and the seaweed–neem bio-composite film were irradiated with different dosages of gamma radiation (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 kGy). The tensile, thermal, and the antimicrobial properties of the films were studied. The results revealed that the irradiated films exhibited improved functional properties compared to the control film at 1.5 kGy radiation dosage. The tensile strength, tensile modulus, and toughness exhibited by the films increased, while the elongation of the irradiated bio-composite film decreased compared to the control film. The morphology of the irradiated films demonstrated a smoother surface compared to the control and provided surface intermolecular interaction of the neem–seaweed matrix. The film indicated an optimum storage stability under ambient conditions and demonstrated no significant changes in the visual appearance. However, an increase in the moisture content was exhibited by the film, and the hydrophobic properties was retained until nine months of the storage period. The study of the films antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (SA), and Bacillus subtilis (BS) indicated improved resistance to bacterial activities after the incorporation of neem leaves extract and gamma irradiation. The fabricated irradiated seaweed–neem bio-composite film could be used as an excellent sustainable packaging material due to its effective storage stability.

Abstract
Nanoparticles possess a huge potential to be employed in numerous biomedical purposes; their applications may include drug delivery systems, gene therapy, and tissue engineering. However, the in vivo use in biomedical applications requires that nanoparticles exhibit sterility. Thus, diverse sterilization techniques have been developed to remove or destroy microbial contamination. The main sterilization methods include sterile filtration, autoclaving, ionizing radiation, and nonionizing radiation. Nonetheless, the sterilization processes can alter the stability, zeta potential, average particle size, and polydispersity index of diverse types of nanoparticles, depending on their composition. Thus, these methods may produce unwanted effects on the nanoparticles' characteristics, affecting their safety and efficacy. Moreover, each sterilization method possesses advantages and drawbacks; thus, the suitable method's choice depends on diverse factors such as the formulation's characteristics, batch volume, available methods, and desired application. In this article, we describe the current sterilization methods of nanoparticles. Moreover, we discuss the advantages and drawbacks of these methods, pointing out the changes in nanoparticles' biological and physicochemical characteristics after sterilization. Our main objective was to offer a comprehensive overview of terminal sterilization processes of nanoparticles for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Colombia is one of the major producers and exporters of banana Musa paradisiaca. Its consumption is high then its agro-industrial wastes are important source to extract pectin. In the present study, inorganic acids (nitric acid and hydrochloride acid) and organic acids (citric acid and acetic acid) were evaluated to extract pectin from banana peels at pH 2 and 3, through acid hydrolysis during 1h at the temperature of 85 °C. The extraction yield, degree of esterification (DE) and intrinsic viscosity of the pectin were characterized. Nitric acid (NA) allowed to obtain higher extraction yield (54 ± 10%) and citric acid (CA) allowed to obtain higher DE (76.7 ± 2%). Additionally, the effect of polymer concentration and degree esterification, low degree of esterification (LDE, 33.1%) and high degree of esterification (HDE, 76.7%) were evaluated in the pectin nanoparticles formation. The pectin with HDE formed stable nanoparticles with a particle size of 255 ± 11 nm and the zeta potential value of -45 ± 3 mV, independently of the polymer concentration. Morphology analysis showed aggregated of the pectin nanoparticles.

Abstract
To improve the stabilities of low methoxy pectin (LMP) stabilized O/W emulsions for the delivery of bioactive substances, LMP was firstly modified with soy peptide (SP), corn peptide (CP) and whey protein peptide (WPP), respectively, by using dry-heat method, then the properties of LMP-peptide complexes stabilized O/W emulsions were characterized and the in vitro digestion of emulsions with β-carotene was test to evaluate the potential applications. LMP-peptide complexes were formed by covalent bonds according to FT-IR spectroscopy. Compared to LMP stabilized emulsions, LMP-peptide complexes stabilized emulsions had smaller droplet sizes and higher stabilities in the changed pH value, temperature and ionic strength. Based on the results of in vitro digestion tests, LMP-SP and LMP-WPP obtained by incubating LMP with peptides at 60 °C for 12 h at the weight ratio of 4:1 were more suitable for the preparation of O/W emulsions to deliver camellia oil and β-carotene.

Abstract
In this study, pectins were extracted from banana wastes Musa paradisiaca under different acidic conditions, obtaining pectins with different degrees of esterification (DE) depending on the acid type and pH. The formation of the polyelectrolyte nanoparticles was evaluated according to the DE of the pectin, the mass ratio of the polymers of pectin to amphiphilic chitosan (AmCh), and their concentration. The properties of the polyelectrolyte nanoparticles were evaluated at different pH and temperatures. The pectin with 24.3% DE formed polyelectrolyte nanoparticles through the electrostatic interaction with AmCh, which was evidenced by changes in the zeta potential and particle size. The study of mass ratio AmCh:Pectin, to get a stable system, showed that it must be at least equal (1:1), or AmCh must be in higher proportion (6:1, 50:1, 100:1), and the polymers concentration must be 1 mg/mL. The study of the temperature effect showed that, when the temperature increases, the particle size decreases, and the pH study showed a stable particle size for the polyelectrolyte nanoparticles in the range of pH 5-6. Nile Red (NR), a hydrophobic molecule, was encapsulated in the polyelectrolyte nanoparticles with a loading capacity of 1.8% and an encapsulation efficiency of 80%.

Abstract
This study evaluated the physicochemical and morphological properties of pectin and chitosan particles combined with sugarcane vinasse for soil fertilization applications. Particles were obtained by adding the biopolymeric solutions (pectin or chitosan solution) dropwise into the crosslinking solutions (calcium chloride 1% in ethanolic solution or tripolyphosphate 5% aqueous solution) followed by drying. Vinasse enhanced pectin gel stability improving pectin/vinasse particle properties. Physicochemical characterization indicated that vinasse nutrients were properly incorporated in both pectin and chitosan matrices. Particles showed spherical shape, with an average diameter of 3 and 2 mm for the pectin and chitosan particles with vinasse, respectively. Chitosan particles, compared to pectin, showed lower swelling capacity and solubility and higher mechanical resistance indicating a denser and more compact polymer network. Both particles were able to hinder water evaporation rates from sandy soil under water stress conditions. Biobased particles with vinasse added show potential to be applied as soil fertilizer representing an alternative to use and disposal of this expressive wastewater from sugar and alcohol industries.

Abstract
This study aims to enhance progesterone (PG) oral bioavailability via its incorporation into hybrid colon-targeted pectin/NaCMC microspheres (MS) cross-linked with Zn2+ and Al3+. The MS were characterized for particle morphology, encapsulation efficiency, swelling behavior, drug release, mucoadhesivity and colon-specific degradability. Response-surface methodology was adopted to optimize the fabrication conditions. Enhancement of in vivo drug performance was evaluated through pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies. The optimized formulation was typically spherical with a mean diameter of 1031 µm and drug entrapment efficiency of 88.8%. This formulation exhibited pH-dependent swelling, negligible drug release in simulated gastric fluid and sustained-release pattern in simulated small intestinal fluid with a mean t50% of 26.5 h. It also showed prolonged and preferential adhesion to rat colonic mucosa, as well as expedited degradation in presence of rat caecal contents. The MS significantly increased the area under the curve and mean residence time by 1.8 and 2.3-fold, respectively compared to the free drug. Orally administered MS showed ~10 times increase in myometrial thickness compared with the drug suspension and elicited uterine responses very similar to that obtained parenterally. These results confirm the ability of this new carrier system to improve the oral bioavailability of PG and attain adequate clinical efficacy.

Abstract
Vaginal microbicides have the potential to give women at high risk of contracting HIV the option of self-protection by preventing the sexual transmission of the virus. In this paper, mucoadhesive vaginal tablets based on chitosan, alone and in combination with pectin and locust bean gum, were developed for the sustained release of tenofovir (an antiretroviral drug). The formulations were placed in simulant vaginal fluid (SVF) to swell, and Hg porosity and SEM microscopy were used for the microstructural characterization of the swelling witnesses. The results show that the association of pectin and chitosan generated polyelectrolyte complexes and produced a robust system able to maintain its structure during the swelling process, when small pores are formed. Drug release and bovine vaginal mucoadhesion studies were performed in SVF showing that tenofovir-controlled dissolution profiles and adhesion to the mucosa were conditioned by the swelling processes of the polymer/s in each formulation. Tablets based on chitosan/pectin have the most homogeneous tenofovir dissolution profiles and last up to 96 h, remaining attached to the vaginal mucosa for the same period. These formulations can therefore be considered a good option for the self-protection of women from the sexual transmission of HIV.

Abstract
The design of new hydrogel-based biomaterials with tunable physical and biological properties is essential for the advancement of applications related to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. For instance, interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) and semi-IPN hydrogels have been widely explored to engineer functional tissues due to their characteristic microstructural and mechanical properties. Here, we engineered IPN and semi-IPN hydrogels comprised of a tough pectin grafted polycaprolactone (pectin-g-PCL) component to provide mechanical stability, and a highly cytocompatible gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) component to support cellular growth and proliferation. IPN hydrogels were formed by calcium ion (Ca2+)-crosslinking of pectin-g-PCL chains, followed by photocrosslinking of the GelMA precursor. Conversely, semi-IPN networks were formed by photocrosslinking of the pectin-g-PCL and GelMA mixture, in the absence of Ca2+ crosslinking. IPN and semi-IPN hydrogels synthesized with varying ratios of pectin-g-PCL to GelMA, with and without Ca2+-crosslinking, exhibited a broad range of mechanical properties. For semi-IPN hydrogels, the aggregation of microcrystalline cores led to formation of hydrogels with compressive moduli ranging from 3.1 to 10.4 kPa. For IPN hydrogels, the mechanistic optimization of pectin-g-PCL, GelMA, and Ca2+ concentrations resulted in hydrogels with comparatively higher compressive modulus, in the range of 39 kPa-5029 kPa. Our results also showed that IPN hydrogels were cytocompatible in vitro and could support the growth of three-dimensionally (3D) encapsulated MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts in vitro. The simplicity, technical feasibility, low cost, tunable mechanical properties, and cytocompatibility of the engineered semi-IPN and IPN hydrogels highlight their potential for different tissue engineering and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Pectins are plant cell wall natural heteropolysaccharides composed mainly of α-1-4 d-galacturonic acid units, which may or may not be methyl esterified, possesses neutral sugars branching that harbor functional moieties. Physicochemical features as pH, temperature, ions concentration, and cosolute presence, affect directly the extraction yield and gelling capacity of pectins. The chemical and structural features of this polysaccharide enables its interaction with a wide range of molecules, a property that scientists profit from to form new composite matrices for target/controlled delivery of therapeutic molecules, genes or cells. Considered a prebiotic dietary fiber, pectins meetmany regulations easily, regarding health applications within the pharmaceutical industry as a raw material and as an agent for the prevention of cancer. Thus, this review lists many emergent pectin-based composite materials which will probably palliate the impact of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, aid to forestall actual epidemics, expand the ken of food additives and food products design.
