Precise healing of oral and maxillofacial wounds: tissue engineering strategies and their associated mechanisms

Precise healing of wounds in the oral and maxillofacial regions is usually achieved by targeting the entire healing process. The rich blood circulation in the oral and maxillofacial regions promotes the rapid healing of wounds through the action of various growth factors. Correspondingly, their tissue engineering can aid in preventing wound infections, accelerate angiogenesis, and enhance the proliferation and migration of tissue cells during wound healing. Recent years, have witnessed an increase in the number of researchers focusing on tissue engineering, particularly for precise wound healing. In this context, hydrogels, which possess a soft viscoelastic nature and demonstrate exceptional biocompatibility and biodegradability, have emerged as the current research hotspot. Additionally, nanofibers, films, and foam sponges have been explored as some of the most viable materials for wound healing, with noted advantages and drawbacks. Accordingly, future research is highly likely to explore the application of these materials harboring enhanced mechanical properties, reduced susceptibility to external mechanical disturbances, and commendable water absorption and non-expansion attributes, for superior wound healing.

Comparative catalytic reduction and degradation with biodegradable sodium alginate based nanocomposite: Zinc oxide/N-doped carbon nitride/sodium alginate

Sodium alginate (SA) is a biodegradable macromolecule which is used to synthesize nanocomposites and their further use as catalysis. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and nitrogen doped carbon nitride (ND-C3N4) nanoparticles are prepared using solvothermal and hydrothermal methods, respectively. ZnO/ND-C3N4/SA nanocomposites are successfully synthesized by employing in-situ polymerization. The presence of essential functional groups is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. Controlled spherical morphology for ZnO nanoparticles, with an average diameter of ∼52 nm, is shown by Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis, while rice-like grain structure with an average grain size ∼62 nm is exhibited by ND-C3N4 nanoparticles. The presence of required elements is confirmed by Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (EDX) analysis. The crystalline nature of nanocomposites is verified by X-ray diffraction spectroscopic (XRD) analysis. The investigation of the catalytic efficiency for degradation and reduction of various organic dyes is carried out on nanoparticles and nanocomposites. Thorough examination and comparison of parameters, such as apparent rate constant (kapp), reduction time, percentage reduction, reduced concentration and half-life, are conducted for all substrates. The nanocomposites show greater efficiency than nanoparticles in both reactions: catalytic reduction and catalytic degradation.

Advanced Applications of Silk-Based Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering: A Short Review

Silk has been consistently popular throughout human history due to its enigmatic properties. Today, it continues to be widely utilized as a polymer, having first been introduced to the textile industry. Furthermore, the health sector has also integrated silk. The Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) holds the record for being the most sustainable, functional, biocompatible, and easily produced type among all available SF sources. SF is a biopolymer approved by the FDA due to its high biocompatibility. It is versatile and can be used in various fields, as it is non-toxic and has no allergenic effects. Additionally, it enhances cell adhesion, adaptation, and proliferation. The use of SF has increased due to the rapid advancement in tissue engineering. This review comprises an introduction to SF and an assessment of the relevant literature using various methods and techniques to enhance the tissue engineering of SF-based hydrogels. Consequently, the function of SF in skin tissue engineering, wound repair, bone tissue engineering, cartilage tissue engineering, and drug delivery systems is therefore analysed. The potential future applications of this functional biopolymer for biomedical engineering are also explored.

Expanding the Potential of Self-Assembled Silk Fibroin as Aerogel Particles for Tissue Regeneration

A newly produced silk fibroin (SF) aerogel particulate system using a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2)-assisted drying technology is herein proposed for biomedical applications. Different concentrations of silk fibroin (3%, 5%, and 7% (w/v)) were explored to investigate the potential of this technology to produce size- and porosity-controlled particles. Laser diffraction, helium pycnometry, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy were performed to characterize the physicochemical properties of the material. The enzymatic degradation profile of the SF aerogel particles was evaluated by immersion in protease XIV solution, and the biological properties by cell viability and cell proliferation assays. The obtained aerogel particles were mesoporous with high and concentration dependent specific surface area (203-326 m2/g). They displayed significant antioxidant activity and sustained degradation in the presence of protease XIV enzyme. The in vitro assessment using human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) confirm the particles' biocompatibility, as well as the enhancement in cell viability and proliferation.

Complex Evaluation of Nanocomposite-Based Hydroxyapatite for Biomedical Applications

A magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite in chitosan matrix (MgHApC) sample was developed as a potential platform for numerous applications in the pharmaceutical, medical, and food industries. Magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite suspensions in the chitosan matrix were obtained by the coprecipitation technique. The surface shape and morphological features were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hydrodynamic diameter of the suspended particles was determined by Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The stability of MgHApC suspensions was evaluated by ultrasonic measurements. The hydrodynamic diameter of the MgHApC particles in suspension was 29.5 nm. The diameter of MgHApC particles calculated from SEM was 12.5 ± 2 nm. Following the SEM observations, it was seen that the MgHApC particles have a spherical shape. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies conducted on MgHApC proved the presence of chitosan and hydroxyapatite in the studied specimens. In vitro antimicrobial assays were performed on Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 microbial strains. The antimicrobial experiments showed that MgHApC exhibited very good antimicrobial properties against all the tested microorganisms. More than that, the results of the in vitro studies revealed that the antimicrobial properties of the samples depend on the incubation time. The evaluation of the sample's cytotoxicity was performed using the human colon cancer (HCT-8) cell line. Our results suggested the great potential of MgHApC to be used in future applications in the field of biomedical applications (e.g., dentistry, orthopedics, etc.).

Mineralized Collagen/Polylactic Acid Composite Scaffolds for Load-Bearing Bone Regeneration in a Developmental Model

Repairing load-bearing bone defects in children remains a big clinical challenge. Mineralized collagen (MC) can effectively simulate natural bone composition and hierarchical structure and has a good biocompatibility and bone conductivity. Polylactic acid (PLA) is regarded as a gold material because of its mechanical properties and degradability. In this study, we prepare MC/PLA composite scaffolds via in situ mineralization and freeze-drying. Cell, characterization, and animal experiments compare and evaluate the biomimetic properties and repair effects of the MC/PLA scaffolds. Phalloidin and DAPI staining results show that the MC/PLA scaffolds are not cytotoxic. CCK-8 and scratch experiments prove that the scaffolds are superior to MC and hydroxyapatite (HA)/PLA scaffolds in promoting cell proliferation and migration. The surface and interior of the MC/PLA scaffolds exhibit rich interconnected pore structures with a porosity of ≥70%. The XRD patterns are typical HA waveforms. X-ray, micro-CT, and H&E staining reveal that the defect boundary disappears, new bone tissue grows into MC/PLA scaffolds in a large area, and the scaffolds are degraded after six months of implantation. The MC/PLA composite scaffold has a pore structure and composition similar to cancellous bone, with a good biocompatibility and bone regeneration ability.

Resorbable Membranes for Guided Bone Regeneration: Critical Features, Potentials, and Limitations

Lack of horizontal and vertical bone at the site of an implant can lead to significant clinical problems that need to be addressed before implant treatment can take place. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a commonly used surgical procedure that employs a barrier membrane to encourage the growth of new bone tissue in areas where bone has been lost due to injury or disease. It is a promising approach to achieve desired repair in bone tissue and is widely accepted and used in approximately 40% of patients with bone defects. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive examination of recent advances in resorbable membranes for GBR including natural materials such as chitosan, collagen, silk fibroin, along with synthetic materials such as polyglycolic acid (PGA), polycaprolactone (PCL), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and their copolymers. In addition, the properties of these materials including foreign body reaction, mechanical stability, antibacterial property, and growth factor delivery performance will be compared and discussed. Finally, future directions for resorbable membrane development and potential clinical applications will be highlighted.

Biomaterials with antifungal strategies to fight oral infections

Oral fungal infections pose a threat to human health and increase the economic burden of oral diseases by prolonging and complicating treatment. A cost-effective strategy is to try to prevent these infections from happening in the first place. With this purpose, biomaterials with antifungal properties are a crucial element to overcome fungal infections in the oral cavity. In this review, we go through different kinds of biomaterials and coatings that can be used to functionalize them. We also review their potential as a therapeutic approach in addition to prophylaxis, by going through traditional and alternative antifungal compounds, e.g., essential oils, that could be incorporated in them, to enhance their efficacy against fungal pathogens. We aim to highlight the potential of these technologies and propose questions that need to be addressed in prospective research. Finally, we intend to concatenate the key aspects and technologies on the use of biomaterials in oral health, to create an easy to find summary of the current state-of-the-art for researchers in the field.

Insights into the relationships of modifying methods, structure, functional properties and applications of chitin: A review

Chitin as the second plentiful polysaccharide has arouse widely attention due to its remarkable availability and biocompatibility. While the strong inter/intra molecular hydrogen bonds and crystallinity severely restrict its applications. Recently, multiple emerging technologies are increasingly used to modify chitin structure for the sake of obtaining excellent functional properties, as well as broadening the corresponding applications. Firstly, this review systematically outlines the features of single and combined methods for chitin modification. Then, the impacts of various modifying methods on the structural characteristics of chitin, including molecular weight, degree of acetylation and functional groups, are further summarized. In addition, the effects of these structural characteristics on the functional properties as well as its potential related applications are illustrated. The conclusion of this review provides better understanding of the relationships among the modifying methods, structure, properties and applications, contributing to chitin modification for the targeted purpose in the future study.

Zinc oxide loaded chitosan-elastin-sodium alginate nanocomposite gel using freeze gelation for enhanced adipose stem cell proliferation and antibacterial properties

Hydrogels have been the material of choice for regenerative medicine applications due to their biocompatibility that can facilitate cellular attachment and proliferation. The present study aimed at constructing a porous hydrogel composite scaffold (chitosan, sodium alginate and elastin) for the repair of chronic skin wounds. Chitosan-based hydrogel incorporating varying concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles i.e. ZnO-NPs (0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1 and 1 % w/w) as the antimicrobial agent tested against Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) exhibited good antibacterial activities. ZnO-NPs were characterized by UV visible spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Fabricated gels were characterized by SEM analysis, FTIR, XRD, swelling ratio, degradation behavior and controlled release kinetics of ZnO-NPs. In vitro cytocompatibility of the composite was investigated using human adipose stem cells (ADSCs) by MTT and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay, further assessed by SEM analysis and PKH26 staining. The SEM and XRD analysis confirmed the successful loading of ZnO-NPs into these scaffolds. Fluorescence PKH26 stained images and SEM analysis of ADSCs seeded scaffolds revealed biocompatible nature. The findings suggested that the developed composite gels have potential clinically for tissue engineering and chronic wound treatment.

Physicochemical, Morphological, and Cytotoxic Properties of Brazilian Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) Starch Scaffold Loaded with Silver Nanoparticles

Due to the physical, thermal, and biological properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), as well as the biocompatibility and environmental safety of the naturally occurring polymeric component, polysaccharide-based composites containing AgNPs are a promising choice for the development of biomaterials. Starch is a low-cost, non-toxic, biocompatible, and tissue-healing natural polymer. The application of starch in various forms and its combination with metallic nanoparticles have contributed to the advancement of biomaterials. Few investigations into jackfruit starch with silver nanoparticle biocomposites exist. This research intends to explore the physicochemical, morphological, and cytotoxic properties of a Brazilian jackfruit starch-based scaffold loaded with AgNPs. The AgNPs were synthesized by chemical reduction and the scaffold was produced by gelatinization. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to study the scaffold. The findings supported the development of stable, monodispersed, and triangular AgNPs. XRD and EDS analyses demonstrated the incorporation of silver nanoparticles. AgNPs could alter the scaffold’s crystallinity, roughness, and thermal stability without affecting its chemistry or physics. Triangular anisotropic AgNPs exhibited no toxicity against L929 cells at concentrations ranging from 6.25 × 10−5 to 1 × 10−3 mol·L−1, implying that the scaffolds might have had no adverse effects on the cells. The scaffolds prepared with jackfruit starch showed greater crystallinity and thermal stability, and absence of toxicity after the incorporation of triangular AgNPs. These findings indicate that jackfruit is a promising starch source for developing biomaterials.

MSCs-laden silk Fibroin/GelMA hydrogels with incorporation of platelet-rich plasma for chondrogenic construct

Repair of osteochondral defects and regeneration of cartilage is a major challenge. In this work, the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-laden hydrogel was designed using silk fibroin (SF) and gelatin methacrylate (GelMA), to encapsulate platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Initially, GelMA was synthesized, and SF was prepared using silkworm cocoon, then MSCs-laden SF/GelMA (SG) hydrogel was fabricated. The physicochemical properties of the hydrogels were evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and rheometry. After hydrogel preparation, the viability of MSCs in the hydrogels was investigated via CCK-8 analysis and fluorescent images. The MSCs-laden SG hydrogel containing PRP was subsequently injected into the cartilage defect area in Sprague Dawley rats. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson staining, and Mankin scores evaluation confirmed the new cartilage formation in 8 weeks. The results presented in the study, therefore, showed that the prepared MSCs-laden SG hydrogel loaded with PRP has the potential for cartilage reconstruction, which is crucial to the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

3D Printing as a Technological Strategy for the Personalized Treatment of Wound Healing

Wound healing is a dynamic process which involves stages of hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. Any error in this process results in abnormal wound healing, generating financial burdens for health systems and even affecting the physical and mental health of the patient. Traditional dressings do not meet the complexities of ideal treatment in all types of wounds. For this reason, in the last decades, different materials for drug delivery and for the treatment of wounds have been proposed reaching novel level of standards, such as 3D printing techniques. The use of natural or synthetic polymers, and the correct design of these printed products loaded with cells and/or combined with active compounds, can generate an effective system for the treatment of wounds, improving the healing process and generating customized dressings according to the patient needs. This manuscript provides a comprehensive review of different types of 3D printing techniques, as well as its use in wound healing and its different stages, including the advantages and limitations of additive manufacturing and future perspectives.

Ag/Ag2O with NIR-Triggered Antibacterial Activities: Photocatalytic Sterilization Enhanced by Low-Temperature Photothermal Effect

Purpose

A synergistic antibacterial system employing photocatalytic performance and low-temperature photothermal effect (LT-PTT) with the potential for infectious skin wound healing promotion was developed.

Methods

Ag/Ag₂O was synthesized with a two-step method, and its physicochemical properties were characterized. After its photocatalytic performance and photothermal effect were evaluated under 0.5 W/cm² 808 nm NIR laser irradiation, its antibacterial activities in both planktonic and biofilm forms were then studied in vitro targeting Staphylococcus Aureus (S. aureus), and the biocompatibility was tested with L-929 cell lines afterward. Finally, the animal model of dorsal skin wound infection was established on Sprague-Dawley rats and was used to assess infectious wound healing promotion of Ag/Ag₂O in vivo.

Results

Ag/Ag₂O showed boosted photocatalytic performance and local temperature accumulation compared with Ag₂O when exposed to 0.5 W/cm² 808 nm NIR irradiation, which therefore endowed Ag/Ag₂O with the ability to kill pathogens rapidly and cleavage bacterial biofilm in vitro. Furthermore, after treatment with Ag/Ag₂O and 0.5 W/cm² 808 nm NIR irradiation, infectious wounds of rats realized skin tissue regeneration from a histochemical level.

Conclusion

By exhibiting excellent NIR-triggered photocatalytic sterilization ability enhanced by low-temperature photothermal effect, Ag/Ag₂O was promising to be a novel, photo-responsive antibacterial agent.

The fabrication and evaluation of silver nanoparticle-based keratin scaffolds

The biotoxicity caused by focus releasing of Ag, which associated with the Ag loading mode, is a problematic issue that need to be solved for practical utilization of the keratin based wound dressing. In this study, keratin/AgNPs blend scaffolds (Ker/Ag) and keratin scaffolds with AgNPs attached on the scaffold's wall surface (Ag@Ker) were prepared. Structure and physical properties of the scaffolds were tested and investigated. In comparison to the Ag@Ker scaffolds, the Ker/Ag scaffolds with uniform dispersion of AgNPs have larger tensile strength and slower degradation rate. Both kind of scaffolds present excellent antibacterial property with 10 μg mL^-1 AgNPs addition, while the Ker/Ag displayed a linear Ag releasing ratio in the first 5-7 days, which is beneficial for obtaining a continuous antibacterial property and avoiding the biotoxicity caused by focus release of Ag. Correspondingly, cytotoxicity assay further reveals that the continuously slow release of Ag of the Ker/Ag scaffolds accelerated the proliferation of cell. Infectious animal models and histological studies showed that the Ker/Ag scaffolds can effectively inhibit the inflammatory response and accelerate epithelialization. Thus, it can be concluded that the Ker/Ag scaffolds with uniform dispersion of AgNPs are more attractive as wound repair materials.

Recent Advances in the Development of Lipid-, Metal-, Carbon-, and Polymer-Based Nanomaterials for Antibacterial Applications

Infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are becoming a serious threat to public health worldwide. With an ever-reducing pipeline of last-resort drugs further complicating the current dire situation arising due to antibiotic resistance, there has never been a greater urgency to attempt to discover potential new antibiotics. The use of nanotechnology, encompassing a broad range of organic and inorganic nanomaterials, offers promising solutions. Organic nanomaterials, including lipid-, polymer-, and carbon-based nanomaterials, have inherent antibacterial activity or can act as nanocarriers in delivering antibacterial agents. Nanocarriers, owing to the protection and enhanced bioavailability of the encapsulated drugs, have the ability to enable an increased concentration of a drug to be delivered to an infected site and reduce the associated toxicity elsewhere. On the other hand, inorganic metal-based nanomaterials exhibit multivalent antibacterial mechanisms that combat MDR bacteria effectively and reduce the occurrence of bacterial resistance. These nanomaterials have great potential for the prevention and treatment of MDR bacterial infection. Recent advances in the field of nanotechnology are enabling researchers to utilize nanomaterial building blocks in intriguing ways to create multi-functional nanocomposite materials. These nanocomposite materials, formed by lipid-, polymer-, carbon-, and metal-based nanomaterial building blocks, have opened a new avenue for researchers due to the unprecedented physiochemical properties and enhanced antibacterial activities being observed when compared to their mono-constituent parts. This review covers the latest advances of nanotechnologies used in the design and development of nano- and nanocomposite materials to fight MDR bacteria with different purposes. Our aim is to discuss and summarize these recently established nanomaterials and the respective nanocomposites, their current application, and challenges for use in applications treating MDR bacteria. In addition, we discuss the prospects for antimicrobial nanomaterials and look forward to further develop these materials, emphasizing their potential for clinical translation.

Drug-Loaded Chitosan Scaffolds for Periodontal Tissue Regeneration

Chitosan is a natural anionic polysaccharide with a changeable architecture and an abundance of functional groups; in addition, it can be converted into various shapes and sizes, making it appropriate for a variety of applications. This article examined and summarized current developments in chitosan-based materials, with a focus on the modification of chitosan, and presented an abundance of information about the fabrication and use of chitosan-derived products in periodontal regeneration. Numerous preparation and modification techniques for enhancing chitosan performance, as well as the uses of chitosan and its metabolites, were reviewed critically and discussed in depth in this study. Chitosan-based products may be formed into different shapes and sizes, considering fibers, nanostructures, gels, membranes, and hydrogels. Various drug-loaded chitosan devices were discussed regarding periodontal regeneration.

Dissolvable wound dressing loaded with silver nanoparticles together with ampicillin and ciprofloxacin

Aim: The current study is focused on the development of water-soluble wound dressings, which are potential dressings for the treatment of burn wounds. Materials & methods: Sodium alginate-based dissolvable wound dressings were prepared and loaded with silver nanoparticles and various antibiotics (ampicillin and ciprofloxacin) followed by characterization and in vitro antibacterial studies. Results & conclusions: The prepared sodium alginate-based dissolvable wound dressing exhibited good porosity, water uptake and moisture content, promising antibacterial activity, high absorption capacity of simulated wound exudates, excellent water vapor transmission rate in the range of 2000 to 5000 g/m² day^-1, sustained drug-release profiles and water solubility. The wound dressings were active against Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella aeruginosa strains of bacteria. The results obtained revealed the wound dressing as potential wound dressings for burn wounds and sensitive skin.

Zn2+ Cross-Linked Alginate Carrying Hollow Silica Nanoparticles Loaded with RL-QN15 Peptides Provides Promising Treatment for Chronic Skin Wounds

Chronic and non-healing wounds pose a great challenge to clinical management and patients. Many studies have explored novel interventions against skin wounds, with bioactive peptides, nanoparticles, and hydrogels arousing considerable attention regarding their therapeutic potential. In this study, the prohealing peptide RL-QN15 was loaded into hollow silica nanoparticles (HSNs), with these HSN@RL-QN15 nanocomposites then combined with zinc alginate (ZA) gels to obtain HSN@RL-QN15/ZA hydrogel. The characteristics, biological properties, and safety profiles of the hydrogel composites were then evaluated. Results showed that the hydrogel had good porosity, hemocompatibility, biocompatibility, and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, with the slow release of loaded RL-QN15. Further analysis indicated that the hydrogel promoted skin cell proliferation and keratinocyte scratch repair, regulated angiogenesis, reduced inflammation, and accelerated re-epithelialization and granulation tissue formation, resulting in the rapid healing of both full-thickness skin wounds and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus biofilm-infected chronic wounds in mice. This peptide-based hydrogel provides a novel intervention for the treatment of chronic skin wounds and shows promise as a wound dressing in the field of tissue regeneration.

Protein by-products: Composition, extraction, and biomedical applications

Significant upsurge in animal by-products such as skin, bones, wool, hides, feathers, and fats has become a global challenge and, if not properly disposed of, can spread contamination and viral diseases. Animal by-products are rich in proteins, which can be used as nutritional, pharmacologically functional ingredients, and biomedical materials. Therefore, recycling these abundant and renewable by-products and extracting high value-added components from them is a sustainable approach to reclaim animal by-products while addressing scarce landfill resources. This article appraises the most recent studies conducted in the last five years on animal-derived proteins' separation and biomedical application. The effort encompasses an introduction about the composition, an overview of the extraction and purification methods, and the broad range of biomedical applications of these ensuing proteins.

Nanoparticle and bioparticle deposition kinetics

Mechanisms and kinetic of particle deposition at solid surfaces leading to the formation of self-assembled layers of controlled structure and density were reviewed. In the first part theoretical aspects were briefly discussed, comprising limiting analytical solutions for the linear transport under flow and diffusion. Methods of the deposition kinetics analysis for non-linear regimes affected by surface blocking were also considered. Characteristic monolayer formation times under diffusion and flow for the nanoparticle size range were calculated. In the second part illustrative experimental results obtained for micro- and nanoparticles were discussed. Deposition at planar substrates was analyzed with emphasis focused on the stability of layers and the release kinetics of silver particles. Applicability of the quartz microbalance measurements (QCM) for quantitative studies of nanoparticle deposition kinetic was also discussed. Except for noble metal and polymer particles, representative results for virus deposition at abiotic surfaces were analyzed. Final part of the review was devoted to nanoparticle corona formation at polymer carrier particles investigated by combination of the concentration depletion, AFM, SEM and the in situ electrokinetic method. It is argued that the results obtained for colloid particles can be used as reliable reference systems for interpretation of protein and other bioparticle deposition, confirming the thesis that simple is universal.

Nanoengineered therapeutic scaffolds for burn wound management

BACKGROUND

Wound healing is a complex process, and selecting an appropriate treatment is crucial and varies from one wound to another. Among injuries, burn wounds are more challenging to treat. Different dressings and scaffolds come into play when skin is injured. These scaffolds provide the optimum environment for wound healing. With the advancements of nanoengineering, scaffolds have been engineered to improve wound healing with lower fatality rates.

OBJECTIVES

Nanoengineered systems have emerged as one of the promising candidates for burn wound management. This review paper aims to provide an in-depth understanding of burn wounds and the role of nanoengineering in burn wound management. The advantages of nanoengineered scaffolds, their properties, and their proven effectiveness have been discussed. Nanoparticles and nanofibers-based nanoengineered therapeutic scaffolds provide optimum protection, infection management, and accelerated wound healing due to their unique characteristics. These scaffolds increase cell attachment and proliferation for desired results.

RESULTS

The literature review suggested that the utilization of nanoengineered scaffolds has accelerated burn wound healing. Nanofibers provide better cell attachment and proliferation among different nanoengineered scaffolds due to their 3D structure mimics the body's extracellular matrix.

CONCLUSION

With the application of these advanced nanoengineered scaffolds, better burn wound management is possible due to sustained drug delivery, better cell attachment, and an infection-free environment.

The Contribution of Silk Fibroin in Biomedical Engineering

Silk fibroin (SF) is a natural protein (biopolymer) extracted from the cocoons of Bombyx mori L. (silkworm). It has many properties of interest in the field of biotechnology, the most important being biodegradability, biocompatibility and robust mechanical strength with high tensile strength. SF is usually dissolved in water-based solvents and can be easily reconstructed into a variety of material formats, including films, mats, hydrogels, and sponges, by various fabrication techniques (spin coating, electrospinning, freeze-drying, and physical or chemical crosslinking). Furthermore, SF is a feasible material used in many biomedical applications, including tissue engineering (3D scaffolds, wounds dressing), cancer therapy (mimicking the tumor microenvironment), controlled drug delivery (SF-based complexes), and bone, eye and skin regeneration. In this review, we describe the structure, composition, general properties, and structure-properties relationship of SF. In addition, the main methods used for ecological extraction and processing of SF that make it a green material are discussed. Lastly, technological advances in the use of SF-based materials are addressed, especially in healthcare applications such as tissue engineering and cancer therapeutics.

A novel hydrogel based on Bletilla striata polysaccharide for rapid hemostasis: Synthesis, characterization and evaluation

The purpose of this study is to develop a new polysaccharide-based hydrogel. The Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the optimal synthesis conditions of the hydrogel, with the swelling parameters as indicators. The findings of rheologic tests confirm that free radical polymerization and the introduction of linear polymers improved the mechanical strength of the hydrogel. Combined with the characterization results, the gel mechanism of BSP-g-PAA/PVA DN hydrogel was proposed. The intermolecular association and entanglement increase, which effectively dissipates energy, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. In vitro blood compatibility experiments show that DN hydrogel has a low hemolysis rate and a good coagulation effect. The material is non-cytotoxic to L929 cells. The hepatic haemorrhage and mouse-tail amputation models of rats and mice were used to further evaluate the in vivo wound sealing and hemostatic properties of the hydrogel. The blood loss and hemostatic time were significantly lower than those of the control group, indicating that the hydrogel has excellent hemostatic effects. Therefore, the obtained BSP-g-PAA/PVA DN network hydrogel has good comprehensive properties and is expected to be used as a hemostatic material or a precursor of a drug carrier and a tissue engineering scaffold.

Improving Polysaccharide-Based Chitin/Chitosan-Aerogel Materials by Learning from Genetics and Molecular Biology

Improved wound healing of burnt skin and skin lesions, as well as medical implants and replacement products, requires the support of synthetical matrices. Yet, producing synthetic biocompatible matrices that exhibit specialized flexibility, stability, and biodegradability is challenging. Synthetic chitin/chitosan matrices may provide the desired advantages for producing specialized grafts but must be modified to improve their properties. Synthetic chitin/chitosan hydrogel and aerogel techniques provide the advantages for improvement with a bioinspired view adapted from the natural molecular toolbox. To this end, animal genetics provide deep knowledge into which molecular key factors decisively influence the properties of natural chitin matrices. The genetically identified proteins and enzymes control chitin matrix assembly, architecture, and degradation. Combining synthetic chitin matrices with critical biological factors may point to the future direction with engineering materials of specific properties for biomedical applications such as burned skin or skin blistering and extensive lesions due to genetic diseases.

Nano-silver functionalized polysaccharides as a platform for wound dressings: A review

The healing of defected skin tissue is a complex process, especially for chronic wounds. Poor healing of these wounds may cause extensive suffering and high cost for patients. Traditional wound dressings are typically designed for a single function and they cannot satisfy all requirements for the whole process of wound healing. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new types of wound dressings with multiple functions for wound healing. In particular, adding an antibacterial function has been shown to be of great benefit during tissue repair. Nano‑silver is widely used in wound treatment because of various advantages, such as its wide antibacterial spectrum and lower drug resistance. Therefore, wound dressings loaded with nano‑silver have attracted widespread attention in wound healing. Naturally derived polysaccharides hold great potential as wound dressings, because of their abundant availability, low prices and good biocompatibility. In this review, nano‑silver functionalized polysaccharide-based wound dressings are systematically reviewed, including their preparation methods, antibacterial performances and classification of nano‑silver wound dressings. Moreover, the toxicity of nano‑silver based wound dressings is discussed and the prospective research direction is elaborated. This review aims to provide readers with an overview of the latest developments in silver nanotechnology, and to provide a little guidance for the research of nano‑silver functionalized polysaccharide-based wound dressings.

Gallocatechin‑silver nanoparticle impregnated cotton gauze patches enhance wound healing in diabetic rats by suppressing oxidative stress and inflammation via modulating the Nrf2/HO-1 and TLR4/NF-κB pathways

This study is designed to investigate the combination of gallocatechin (GC) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for its wound healing ability in diabetic rats. Thirty male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: 1. Normal control rats dressed with blank CGP1; 2. Diabetic rats dressed with blank CGP1; 3. Diabetic rats dressed with 13.06μM of GC; 4. Diabetic rats dressed with 26.12 μM of GC; 5. Diabetic rats dressed with 0.1% silver sulfadiazine patches. GC-AgNPs-CGP dressed diabetic rats showed significant FBG reduction, prevented the body weight losses and reduced the oxidative stress by lowering MDA content and elevated antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT and GPx in wound healing skin of diabetic rats when compared to normal CGP. Besides, mRNA expression of Nrf2, Nqo-1, and Ho-1 was upregulated with downregulated expression of Keap-1 mRNA, which is supported by immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, GC-AgNPs-CGP dressing increased growth factors such as VEGF, EGF, TGF-β, and FGF-2 while decreasing MMP-2 in the skin of diabetic wound rats. In vitro permeation study demonstrated rapid GC release and permeation with a flux of 0.061 and 0.143 mg/sq.cm/h. In conclusion, the results indicated that GC-AgNPs-CGP dressing on diabetic wound rats modulated oxidative stress and inflammation with elevated growth factors; increased collagen synthesis thereby significantly improved the wound healing and could be beneficial for the management of diabetic wounds.

Cationic, anionic and neutral polysaccharides for skin tissue engineering and wound healing applications

Today, chronic wound care and management can be regarded as a clinically critical issue. However, the limitations of current approaches for wound healing have encouraged researchers and physicians to develop more efficient alternative approaches. Advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have resulted in the development of promising approaches that can accelerate wound healing and improve the skin regeneration rate and quality. The design and fabrication of scaffolds that can address the multifactorial nature of chronic wound occurrence and provide support for the healing process can be considered an important area requiring improvement. In this regard, polysaccharide-based scaffolds have distinctive properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, high water retention capacity and nontoxicity, making them ideal for wound healing applications. Their tunable structure and networked morphology could facilitate a number of functions, such as controlling their diffusion, maintaining wound moisture, absorbing a large amount of exudates and facilitating gas exchange. In this review, the wound healing process and the influential factors, structure and properties of carbohydrate polymers, physical and chemical crosslinking of polysaccharides, scaffold fabrication techniques, and the use of polysaccharide-based scaffolds in skin tissue engineering and wound healing applications are discussed.

Cellulose-Based Nanofibril Composite Materials as a New Approach to Fight Bacterial Infections

Antibiotic resistant microorganisms have become an enormous global challenge, and are predicted to cause hundreds of millions of deaths. Therefore, the search for novel/alternative antimicrobial agents is a grand global challenge. Cellulose is an abundant biopolymer with the advantages of low cost, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. With the recent growth of nanotechnology and nanomedicine, numerous researchers have investigated nanofibril cellulose to try to develop an anti-bacterial biomaterial. However, nanofibril cellulose has no inherent antibacterial activity, and therefore cannot be used on its own. To empower cellulose with anti-bacterial properties, new efficient nanomaterials have been designed based on cellulose-based nanofibrils as potential wound dressings, food packaging, and for other antibacterial applications. In this review we summarize reports concerning the therapeutic potential of cellulose-based nanofibrils against various bacterial infections.

Advances in Skin Wound and Scar Repair by Polymer Scaffolds

Scars, as the result of abnormal wound-healing response after skin injury, may lead to loss of aesthetics and physical dysfunction. Current clinical strategies, such as surgical excision, laser treatment, and drug application, provide late remedies for scarring, yet it is difficult to eliminate scars. In this review, the functions, roles of multiple polymer scaffolds in wound healing and scar inhibition are explored. Polysaccharide and protein scaffolds, an analog of extracellular matrix, act as templates for cell adhesion and migration, differentiation to facilitate wound reconstruction and limit scarring. Stem cell-seeded scaffolds and growth factors-loaded scaffolds offer significant bioactive substances to improve the wound healing process. Special emphasis is placed on scaffolds that continuously release oxygen, which greatly accelerates the vascularization process and ensures graft survival, providing convincing theoretical support and great promise for scarless healing.

Facile design and development of nano-clustery graphene-based macromolecular protein hydrogel loaded with ciprofloxacin to antibacterial improvement for the treatment of burn wound injury

Nowadays, awareness about the burn wound is often considered difficult due to bacterial and other organism infections. The facile and eco-friendly preparations of antibiotic-loaded hydrogel-based bio-composites have great attention in the field of wound dressing for burn wound therapy and nursing care. In the present investigation, we have developed ciprofloxacin (CF)-encapsulated graphene-silk fibroin macromolecular hydrogel dressings material with unique chemical and physical properties to achieve the desirable antibacterial efficacy and healing activity. The antibacterial activity of prepared hydrogel was evaluated against bacterial pathogens treated with different concentrations of CF, which have been provided improved antibacterial activity on burn wound infection. In vitro, cytocompatibility evaluations were performed to imply the suitability of hydrogel on fibroblast cells, which has been dramatically related to in vivo wound healing. Furthermore, an in vivo wound healing analysis was carried out using a rat to observe the capability of the CF-incorporated GH/SF hydrogel matrix. Thus, this investigation widely demonstrates the healing ability of prepared hydrogel matrix and could be a significant landmark in the research on burn wound healing applications.

Preparation, characterization, and antibacterial properties of hybrid nanofibrous scaffolds for cutaneous tissue engineering

Since polymeric nanofibrous scaffolds have been widely used in tissue regeneration, the risk of bacterial infections should not be neglected. In the present work, poly-caprolactone-silk fibroin-soluble eggshell membrane-silver nanoparticles (PCL-SF-SESM-AgNPs) and caprolactone-silk fibroin-soluble eggshell membrane-chitosan (PCL-SF-SESM-CS) scaffolds were fabricated via the electrospinning method for cutaneous regeneration. The composition, morphology, hydrophilicity, and mechanical features of prepared scaffolds were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), tensile, and water contact angle tests. The existence of AgNPs in PCL/SF/SESM/AgNPs nanofibers was confirmed by UV-visible, Transmission electron microscopes (TEM), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns. Besides, cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation process of cutaneous progenitor cells, namely basal cell carcinoma (BCCs), toward keratinocyte-like cells were evaluated using MTT analysis, DAPI, Immunofluorescence imaging (IF), and Real-Time Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (QRT-PCR) assay. The results indicated that prepared nanofibrous mats are appropriate candidates for cutaneous regeneration and in advanced in vivo applications could be used. Lastly, the antimicrobial potential of prepared nanofibers against microorganisms such as E. coli, S. aureus, and C. Albicans was analyzed using the disc diffusion method. Results revealed that chitosan-containing nanofibrous scaffolds indicate inhibition against S. aureus, but PCL-SF-SESM as control group not. In addition, against C. albicans any antifungal activity was not observed.

A Critical Review on Polymeric Biomaterials for Biomedical Applications

Natural and synthetic polymers have been explored for many years in the field of tissue engineering and regeneration. Researchers have developed many new strategies to design successful advanced polymeric biomaterials. In this review, we summarized the recent notable advancements in the preparation of smart polymeric biomaterials with self-healing and shape memory properties. We also discussed novel approaches used to develop different forms of polymeric biomaterials such as films, hydrogels and 3D printable biomaterials. In each part, the applications of the biomaterials in soft and hard tissue engineering with their in vitro and in vivo effects are underlined. The future direction of the polymeric biomaterials that could pave a path towards successful clinical implications is also underlined in this review.

Bioaerogels: Promising Nanostructured Materials in Fluid Management, Healing and Regeneration of Wounds

Wounds affect one's quality of life and should be managed on a patient-specific approach, based on the particular healing phase and wound condition. During wound healing, exudate is produced as a natural response towards healing. However, excessive production can be detrimental, representing a challenge for wound management. The design and development of new healing devices and therapeutics with improved performance is a constant demand from the healthcare services. Aerogels can combine high porosity and low density with the adequate fluid interaction and drug loading capacity, to establish hemostasis and promote the healing and regeneration of exudative and chronic wounds. Bio-based aerogels, i.e., those produced from natural polymers, are particularly attractive since they encompass their intrinsic chemical properties and the physical features of their nanostructure. In this work, the emerging research on aerogels for wound treatment is reviewed for the first time. The current scenario and the opportunities provided by aerogels in the form of films, membranes and particles are identified to face current unmet demands in fluid managing and wound healing and regeneration.

Biopolymer and Synthetic Polymer-Based Nanocomposites in Wound Dressing Applications: A Review

Biopolymers are materials obtained from a natural origin, such as plants, animals, microorganisms, or other living beings; they are flexible, elastic, or fibrous materials. Polysaccharides and proteins are some of the natural polymers that are widely used in wound dressing applications. In this review paper, we will provide an overview of biopolymers and synthetic polymer-based nanocomposites, which have promising applications in the biomedical research field, such as wound dressings, wound healing, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and medical implants. Since these polymers have intrinsic biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, non-toxicity, and biodegradable properties, they can be used for various clinical applications. The significant advancements in materials research, drug development, nanotechnology, and biotechnology have laid the foundation for changing the biopolymeric structural and functional properties. The properties of biopolymer and synthetic polymers were modified by blending them with nanoparticles, so that these materials can be used as a wound dressing application. Recent wound care issues, such as tissue repairs, scarless healing, and lost tissue integrity, can be treated with blended polymers. Currently, researchers are focusing on metal/metal oxide nanomaterials such as zinc oxide (ZnO), cerium oxide (CeO₂), silver (Ag), titanium oxide (TiO₂), iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), and other materials (graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNT)). These materials have good antimicrobial properties, as well as action as antibacterial agents. Due to the highly antimicrobial properties of the metal/metal oxide materials, they can be used for wound dressing applications.

Curcumin-loaded sandwich-like nanofibrous membrane prepared by electrospinning technology as wound dressing for accelerate wound healing

Wound healing is a complicated process constituted of four successive physiological stages involving wound bleeding, inflammatory response, cell proliferation and tissue remodeling. During this period, bacteria can easily infect the wound. Therefore, we prepared a novel curcumin-loaded sandwich-like nanofibrous membrane (CSNM) using sequential electrospinning for the hemostasis, antibacterial and accelerate wound healing. The morphology of the nanofibrous membrane was analyzed by SEM. In addition, the water absorption capacity, water vapor transmission rate, water contact-angle, and in vitro drug release were all tested. Then in vitro and in vivo hemostatic experiments demonstrated that CSNM has a good hemostatic effect. Antioxidant effect was assessed by the DPPH radical scavenging method and CSNM presented a high antioxidant activity. Additionally, CSNM demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity by the disk diffusion method. Furthermore, the rat dorsal skin defects model revealed that the CSNM distinctly induced the granulation tissue grew, collagen deposition and epithelial tissue remodeling. Meanwhile, the results of the immunohistochemical staining showed that the CSNM can facilitate the expression of CD31 and TGF-β in the early stage of the wound, thereby accelerating wound healing. In general, this study proved that the multifunctional CSNM has great potential as wound dressing in wound healing.

Chitin-hydroxyapatite-collagen composite scaffolds for bone regeneration

Bone defect is usually difficult to recover quickly, and bone scaffold transplantation is considered to be an effective method. Biomaterials have a wide range of application prospects in bone tissue repair, and the two key problems are the selection of materials and cells. The object of this study was to discuss the structural characteristics of bone scaffold materials and their effects on bone repair in vivo. The chitin-hydroxyapatite (HAP)-collagen composite scaffolds (CHCS) was prepared with epichlorohydrin (ECH) as crosslinking agent. The structure was characterized and the compressive strength, porosity, water absorbency and stability were investigated. The biocompatibility and osteogenic differentiation of CHCS in vitro were detected, and the effect of defect repair in vivo was evaluated. The results suggested that HAP not only enhanced the compressive strength of CHCS, but also promoted the formation of calcium nodules due to its bone conductivity. Histological staining showed that collagen promoted collagen deposition and new bone formation. X-ray images also indicated that CHCS transplantation accelerated bone repair. Therefore, CHCs has immense potential in bone regeneration.

PVA based nanofiber containing CQDs modified with silica NPs and silk fibroin accelerates wound healing in a rat model

In recent years, applying various wound dressings with antibacterial activities to expedite tissue repair stages has gained remarkable attention. The intertwined three-dimensional structure of nanofibers provides unique spaces for carrying drugs and repair agents during the wound healing process. In this research, a carbon quantum dot (CQD)/silica nanoparticle (Si NP)/silk fibroin (SF) nanocomposite was synthesized, and two novel wound dressings, a BC-CQD/Si NP/SF nanocomposite and a PVA-CQD/Si NP/SF nanofiber, were prepared by Spray Printing and Electrospinning methods and successfully characterized. The water-uptake capacity of the BC-CQD/Si NP/SF nanocomposite has been optimized to evaluate its swelling behavior. To determine the antibacterial effects of the synthesized materials both MIC and Optical Density (OD) methods were performed, and the results imply that materials have high antibacterial activity and could successfully inhibit the growth of both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Cell toxicity, viability, and proliferation on NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells with the MTT assay have proved that the CQD/Si NP/SF nanocomposite not only has no toxicity but also can accelerate cell viability and proliferation. To assess the effect of the CQD/Si NP/SF nanocomposite on cell migration and in vitro wound healing scratch, a wound assay was performed, and the nanocomposite exhibits the ability to promote wound healing. The PVA-CQD/Si NP/SF nanofiber was used to investigate wound healing in an animal model. The results show that the PVA-CQD/Si NP/SF nanofiber effectively accelerates the skin and hair follicle regeneration. Therefore, the PVA-CQD/Si NP/SF nanofiber is a promising wound dressing for inhibiting bacterial growth and promoting skin wound repair and hair regeneration.

Fabrication of silver nanoparticles/gelatin hydrogel system for bone regeneration and fracture treatment

The present work aims to examine the effect of gelatin on the stabilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their use in healing the bone fracture. AgNPs-loaded Gel hydrogels (AgNPs/Gel) were fabricated under sunlight using gelatin (Gel) as stabilizing agent. The characterization of the synthesized hydrogels was performed with the help of techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Furthermore, the results of cell cytotoxicity confirmed that the AgNPs/Gel hydrogels are nonhazardous to osteoblasts. The outcome of cell fixation with AgNPs/Gel hydrogels after an incubation period of five days exposed the improved survival and spreading of osteoblasts cells on the prepared AgNPs/Gel hydrogels. Moreover, the AgNPs/Gel hydrogel nanostructures displayed their ability in modulating bone fracture healing, which suggests their potential use in nursing care.

Ceria-Incorporated Biopolymer for Preventing Fungal Adhesion

Although biopolymers are widely used in biomedical fields, the issue of poor antimicrobial properties remains unsolved, leading to a potential increase in infections. Here, ceria nanoparticles (CNPs) were incorporated into a representative biopolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), for drug-free antimicrobial properties. After characterizing the CNPs and surface/mechanical properties of the CNP-PMMA nanocomposite, antiadhesive effects against Candida albicans, the most common fungal species responsible for fungal infections, were determined using metabolic activity assays, and the underlying microbial antiadhesive mechanism was revealed. Hydrothermally fabricated CNPs showed a size of ∼20 nm with a zeta potential of 12 ± 2.3 mV and showed catalytic properties as a ROS modulator. Successful incorporation of CNPs into PMMA up to 2 wt % was confirmed by EDS analysis. The surface roughness and mechanical properties such as flexural strength and modulus were relatively unchanged up to 2 wt %. In contrast, the surface energy increased, and the Vickers hardness decreased in the 2 wt % PMMA compared with the control. A drop of up to 90% of adherent Candida albicans was observed in CNP-incorporated PMMA, which was confirmed and quantified via fungus staining images. The antiadhesive mechanism was revealed from the direct antimicrobial effects of CNP via the upregulation of the intracellular ROS level. Taken together, the antimicrobial-adhesive properties of the CNP-PMMA nanocomposite suggest the potential usefulness of CNP as a promising drug-free antimicrobial ingredient for biopolymers, which could lead to the prevention of microbial-induced complications in clinical settings.

Silk fibroin and silk-based biomaterial derivatives for ideal wound dressings

Silk fibroin (SF) is derived from Bombyx mori silkworm cocoons and has been used in textiles and as a suture material for decades. More recently, SF has been used for various new biomedical applications, including as a wound dressing, owing to its excellent biological and mechanical properties. Specifically, the mechanical stiffness, versatility, biocompatibility, biodegradability, water vapour permeability and slight bactericidal properties make SF an excellent candidate biomaterial for wound dressing applications. The effectiveness of SF as a wound dressing has been tested and well-documented in vitro as well as in-vivo, as described here. Dressings based on SF are currently used for treating a wide variety of chronic and acute (e.g. burn) wounds. SF and its derivatives prepared as biomaterials are available as sponges, hydrogels, nanofibrous matrices, scaffolds, micro/nanoparticles, and films. The present review discusses the potential role of SF in wound dressing and its modulation for wound dressing applications. The comparison of SF based dressings with other natural polymers understands the readers, the scope and limitation of the subject in-depth.

Metal-based nanoparticles for bone tissue engineering

Tissue is vital to the organization of multicellular organisms, because it creates the different organs and provides the main scaffold for body shape. The quest for effective methods to allow tissue regeneration and create scaffolds for new tissue growth has intensified in recent years. Tissue engineering has recently used some promising alternatives to existing conventional scaffold materials, many of which have been derived from nanotechnology. One important example of these is metal nanoparticles. The purpose of this review is to cover novel tissue engineering methods, paying special attention to those based on the use of metal-based nanoparticles. The unique physiochemical properties of metal nanoparticles, such as antibacterial effects, shape memory phenomenon, low cytotoxicity, stimulation of the proliferation process, good mechanical and tensile strength, acceptable biocompatibility, significant osteogenic potential, and ability to regulate cell growth pathways, suggest that they can perform as novel types of scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. The basic principles of various nanoparticle-based composites and scaffolds are discussed in this review. The merits and demerits of these particles are critically discussed, and their importance in bone tissue engineering is highlighted.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles utilizing various biological systems: mechanisms and applications-a review

The evolving technology of nanoparticle synthesis, especially silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) has already been applied in various fields i.e., electronics, optics, catalysis, food, health and environment. With advancement in research, it is possible to develop nanoparticles of various size, shape, morphology, and surface to volume ratio utilizing biological systems. A number of different agents and methods can be employed to develop choice based AgNPs using algae, plants, fungi and bacteria. The use of plant extracts to produce AgNPs appears to be more convenient, as the method is simple, environmental friendly and inexpensive, also requiring a single-step. The microbial synthesis of AgNps showed intracellular and extracellular mechanisms to reduce metal ions into nanoparticles. Studies have shown that different size (1-100 nm) and shapes (spherical, triangular and hexagonal etc.) of nanoparticles can be produced from various biological routes and these diverse nanoparticles have various functions and usability i.e., agriculture, medical-science, textile, cosmetics and environment protection. The present review provides an overview of various biological systems used for AgNP synthesis, its underlying mechanisms, further highlighting the current research and applications of variable shape and sized AgNPs.
