Abstract
This investigation focuses on the extraction, characterization, and evaluation of taro (Colocasia esculenta) stolon polysaccharide (TSP) as a tablet binding agent, which is obtained from edible taro stolon. TSP was subjected to phytochemical screening and characterized by FTIR, DSC, TGA, DTA, XRD, particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, rheological behavior, and SEM. The tablets prepared with varying concentrations of TSP (2.5 %, 5 %, 7.5 %, and 10 % w/w) and diclofenac sodium (DS) were evaluated and compared with the same concentrations of gum acacia and PVP K-30. The presence of carbohydrates was confirmed by Molisch's test. The FTIR spectra established the compatibility of the drug with excipients. The SEM images revealed asymmetric and elongated particles of TSP powder. The hydration kinetics study showed matrix hydration and water penetration velocity within the range of 0.602-0.753 g/g and 0.112-0.189 cm/g.h, respectively. The tablets showed drug release of >75 % at 45 min. The release-exponent value above 0.89 indicated a super case II drug transport combining matrix erosion and diffusion. Optimum tablet hardness and very low friability, even at 2.5 % binder concentration, suggested the potential application of the novel TSP as a tablet binder in the formulation of the tablets.

Abstract
Aqueous suspensions rely on electrostatic interactions among suspended solids, posing a significant challenge to maintaining stability during storage, particularly in the food and pharmaceutical industries, where synthetic stabilizers are commonly employed. However, there is a growing interest in exploring new materials derived from natural and environmentally friendly sources. This study aimed to optimize the stability parameters of a novel Altoandino Nostoc Sphaericum hydrocolloid (NSH) extracted via micro atomization. Suspensions were prepared by varying the pH, gelatinization temperature and NSH dosage using a 23 factorial arrangement, resulting in eight treatments stored under non-controlled conditions for 20 days. Stability was assessed through turbidity, sedimentation (as sediment transmittance), ζ potential, particle size, color and UV-Vis scanning. Optimization of parameters was conducted using empirical equations, with evaluation based on the correlation coefficient (R2), average relative error (ARE) and X2. The suspensions exhibited high stability throughout the storage period, with optimized control parameters identified at a pH of 4.5, gelatinization temperature of 84.55 °C and NSH dosage of 0.08 g/L. Simulated values included turbidity (99.00%), sedimentation (72.34%), ζ potential (-25.64 mV), particle size (300.00 nm) and color index (-2.00), with simulated results aligning with practical application. These findings suggest the potential use of NSH as a substitute for commercial hydrocolloids, albeit with consideration for color limitations that require further investigation.

Abstract
The present investigation was aimed to fabricate and optimize extended-release beads of diclofenac sodium based on an ion-cross-linked matrix of pectin (PTN) and taro (Colocasia esculenta) stolon polysaccharide (TSP) with 23 full factorial design. Total polysaccharide concentration (TPC), polysaccharide ratio (PR), and cross-linker concentration ([CaCl2]) were taken as independent factors with two levels of each. Initially, TSP was extracted, purified, and characterized. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) showed drug-polymer compatibility. The study also revealed the significant positive effect of TSP on drug entrapment efficiency (DEE) and sustaining drug release. The response variables (DEE, cumulative % drug-release at 1, 2, 4, 6, and 10 h, release-constant, time for 50 % and 90 % drug release (T50%, T90%), release-similarity factor (f2), and difference factor (f1) were analyzed, and subsequently, independent fabrication variables were numerically optimized by Design-Expert software (Version-13; Stat-Ease Inc., Minneapolis). The optimized batch exhibited appreciable DEE of 88.5 % (± 2.2) and an extended-release profile with significantly higher T50%, T90%, and release-similarity factor (f2) of 4.7 h, 11.4 h, and 71.6, respectively. Therefore, the study exhibited successful incorporation of the novel TSP as a potential alternative adjunct polysaccharide in the pectin-based ion-cross-linked inter-penetrating polymeric network for extended drug release.

Abstract
Trigonella foenum-graecum, known as fenugreek, belongs to the leguminous family of wild growth in Western Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean, and Asia; its ripe seeds contain a pool of bioactive substances with great potential in the food industry and medicine. In this study, fenugreek seed mucilage (FSM) was extracted and characterized in its structural properties by X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-performance liquid chromatography. Then, the applicability of FSM as an antimicrobial agent was demonstrated via the development of novel, active, edible FSM-based biofilms containing carboxymethyl cellulose and rosemary essential oil (REO). Incorporating REO in the biofilms brought about specific changes in Fourier-transform infrared spectra, affecting thermal degradation behavior. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy morphography showed an even distribution of REO and smoother surfaces in the loaded films. Besides, the solubility tests evidenced a reduction in water solubility with increasing REO concentration from 1 to 3 wt%. The biological assay evidenced the antimicrobial activity of REO-loaded biofilms against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Finally, whole apples were dip-coated with FSM-based solutions to showcase future edible systems. The REO-loaded biofilms extended the shelf life of apples to 30 days, demonstrating their potential for sustainable and active coatings.

Abstract
Natural bioactive compounds from plants exhibit substantial pharmacological potency and therapeutic value. However, the development of most plant bioactive compounds is hindered by low solubility and instability. Conventional pharmaceutical forms, such as tablets and capsules, only partially overcome these limitations, restricting their efficacy. With the recent development of nanotechnology, nanocarriers can enhance the bioavailability, stability, and precise intracellular transport of plant bioactive compounds. Researchers are increasingly integrating nanocarrier-based drug delivery systems (NDDS) into the development of natural plant compounds with significant success. Moreover, natural products benefit from nanotechnological enhancement and contribute to the innovation and optimization of nanocarriers via self-assembly, grafting modifications, and biomimetic designs. This review aims to elucidate the collaborative and reciprocal advancement achieved by integrating nanocarriers with botanical products, such as bioactive compounds, polysaccharides, proteins, and extracellular vesicles. This review underscores the salient challenges in nanomedicine, encompassing long-term safety evaluations of nanomedicine formulations, precise targeting mechanisms, biodistribution complexities, and hurdles in clinical translation. Further, this study provides new perspectives to leverage nanotechnology in promoting the development and optimization of natural plant products for nanomedical applications and guiding the progression of NDDS toward enhanced efficiency, precision, and safety. Abstract
In recent years, there increment demand for healthier food options that can replace high-fat ingredients in bakery products without compromising their taste and texture. This research was focused on a formulation study of the blend of nano polysaccharides derived from aloe vera and guar gum at various concentrations. This study selected the blend concentration of 1 % aloe vera mucilage (AM) and 1 % guar gum (GG) due to its optimal gelling properties. Different magnetic stirring time durations were employed to formulate AGB (aloe vera guar gum blend). The particle size of AGB revealed the lowest nanoparticle size (761.03 ± 62 nm) with a stirring time of 4 h. The FTIR analysis found the presence of monomer sugars in AGB nano polysaccharide powder such as mannose, arabinose, and glucose. The thermogram results displayed an endothermic peak for all samples with a glass transition temperature (Tg) between 16 and 50 °C. The SEM image of the AGB indicated uniform spherical particles. The AGB powder exhibited good functional properties. The antimicrobial activity of AGB powder against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans was 22.32 ± 0.02, 21.56 ± 0.02, and 19.33 ± 0.33 mm, respectively. Furthermore, the effects of different levels of vegetable fat replacement with AGB powder on cake sensory properties, thermal stability, and texture characteristics were also examined. Notably, the cake containing a 50 % substitution of vegetable fat with AGB (C50) supplied desirable physicochemical, textural, and sensory properties. These results can provide advantages for the development of fat replacers in bakery products.

Abstract
The objectives of the present work were to explore film forming ability of mucilaginous polysaccharides obtained from Cassia uniflora seeds and improving its bioadhesive potential by thiolation for drug delivery and other applications. Thiolation was achieved by esterification reaction with thioglycolic acid. The modification was confirmed by performing and comparing its zeta potential, DSC, and spectrophotometric characterization by FTIR and NMR with unmodified mucilaginous polysaccharide. The modified mucilaginous polysaccharides FTIR spectra showed an additional absorption band at 2565 cm-1 and new shifts appeared in the 1H (δ 3.24 and at δ 3.44 ppm) and 13C NMR spectra's (21.56 ppm) confirming the esterification of mucilaginous polysaccharides. The prepared films of thiolated and unmodified mucilaginous polysaccharides were evaluated for various parameters like thickness, pH, and weight measurement, The film formulation had a thickness of 0.16 to 0.18 mm, pH in the range of 6.79 to 7.09 and weight uniformity 0.89 to 0.94 mg. The results reveal that the films based on thiolated material improved bioadhesive properties after thiolation. The SEM photographs revealed a smooth surface of film formulations. The diclofenac-loaded film of thiolated mucilaginous polysaccharide also showed >1.5-fold an increase in in-vitro drug release and exhibited non Fickian transport mechanism. These findings could increase the possible applications of chemically modified-thiolated mucilaginous polysaccharides of Cassia uniflora seeds in drug delivery.

Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate Cassia fistula seed galactomannan (CFSG) as a tablet-binder in the formulation of a monolithic matrix tablet using diclofenac sodium as a model drug. Initially, CFSG was extracted and purified from the seeds of the Cassia fistula tree and then screened for phytochemicals. Native CFSG was characterized with polysaccharide content determination, monosaccharide composition analysis, elemental analysis, FTIR, solid-state 13C NMR, molecular weight, zeta potential, DSC, TGA-DTA, XRD, viscosity, pH and surface tension, rheology, SEM and acute oral toxicity study. Prior to formulation, the drug-CFSG compatibility was checked by FTIR, DSC, and XRD. Diclofenac sodium-loaded granules were prepared by the wet granulation method and evaluated for various granule properties. Finally, granules were compressed into tablets and evaluated for binding and other tablet properties. The granules showed to have optimum micromeritic properties. Tablet hardness and friability were found to be approximately 7 kg/m2 and 0.3 %, respectively, which substantiate the excellent binding capacity of CFSG. Other tablet properties were also found to be within the Pharmacopoeial compliance limit. The tablets with a minimum concentration of CFSG (2.5%w/w) as binder showed appreciable mechanical strength and faster drug release, which ratifies CFSG as an alternative tablet binder.

Abstract
The effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on various properties of basil seed mucilage (a heteropolysaccharide)-polyvinyl alcohol (BSM-PVA) films was investigated. Increasing concentration of ZnONPs in BSM-PVA films reduced moisture content (from 24.73 to 17.09 %), water solubility (from 36.36 to 27.65 %), water vapor permeability (from 4.66 × 10-7 to 2.55 × 10-7 g·m/m2·Pa·h), oxygen permeability (from 2.96 to 2.13 cm3 μm/m2 d kPa), and elongation at break (from 40.34 to 29.44 %), and increased ultimate tensile strength (from 16.81 to 21.48 MPa). Color and light transmission were affected by ZnONPs concentrations. The lack of formation of new peaks, along with the displacement of peaks, indicated the formation of hydrogen bonds between ZnONPs and the film matrix. Dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis showed that storage modulus and glass transition temperature increased with the concentration of ZnONPs. Scanning electron microscopy images illustrated that the addition of ZnONPs improved film integrity. X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the crystal shape of nanoparticles was preserved in the film matrix. Films containing ZnONPs showed good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (reductions ≥ 3 log CFU/cm2) and Escherichia coli (reductions ≥ 4 log CFU/cm2). Films containing ZnONPs also showed a suitable antifungal activity during the storage of wheat bread.

Abstract
This study investigates the fabrication of edible coating based on Plantago ovata seed mucilage (POSM). The films were prepared from POSM (1 %, w/v), glycerol (75 %, based on POSM mass), and xanthan gum (XG: 20, 30 and 40 %, based on POSM mass) by a casting method, and their physicochemical, mechanical, thermal, morphological, and barrier properties were determined. Results indicated the development of highly transparent (transparency values: 1.36 ± 0.05 to 2.42 ± 0.09) and hydrophobic films (contact angle: 101.57 ± 0.34 to107.08 ± 0.55o) with very low water vapor permeability (WVP: 2.77 ± 0.02 × 10-12 to 1.98 ± 0.04 × 10-12 g s-1m-1Pa-1), slight water solubility (31.14 ± 0.46 to 23.08 ± 0.82 %), and good mechanical properties (tensile strength: 30.87 ± 0.96 to 61.80 ± 0.71 MPa). Morphological studies also indicated smooth and uniform surfaces without pores and cracks. In addition, the films showed good antioxidant activity (61.46 to 68.71 %), and their antibacterial activity against E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa was also demonstrated. The applicability of the developed films to extend the shelf life of strawberries was shown by comparing the appearance of dip-coated strawberries and the control sample within 8 days at room temperature. Based on the results, the developed biofilms have great potential for edible coating and packaging applications.

Abstract
Synergized multi-plasticizers for a starch-based edible film were developed for food packaging. The most popular edible plasticizers, water, glycerol, and sorbitol were used as modal materials to demonstrate the synergized function of multi-plasticizers. The efficiency, stability, and compatibility of each plasticizer, as well as their synergized functions were investigated based on the characterizations of tensile properties after storing under different humidity conditions and for different times. The relationship between the microstructures of the plasticizers and their performances was studied and established. The results showed that water is an efficient plasticizer but is not stable, which results in it becoming brittle under lower humidity conditions; glycerol has a stronger moisture-retaining and absorption capability, which results in a weaker tensile strength under higher humidity conditions; and sorbitol is an efficient and stable plasticizer but needs to work with water, and its function can be synthesized by mixing it with water and glycerol.

Abstract
This study extracted the mucilage from Corchorus olitorius L. to observe its chemical and functional properties and suggest its possible applications in various fields. Corchorus olitorius L. mucilage was isolated by hot water extraction. FT-IR and HPAEC-PAD were used to describe the chemical composition, and the functional properties and antioxidant activities of the mucilage were also examined. The mucilage was mainly composed of uronic acid (34.24%, w/w). The solubility was 79.48 ± 1.08% at 65 °C, the swelling index was 29.01 ± 2.54% at 25 °C, and the water-holding capacity and oil-binding capacity were 28.66 ± 1.48 and 8.423 ± 0.23 g/g, respectively. The mucilage viscosity increased from 4.38 to 154.97 cP in a concentration-dependent manner. Increasing the concentration decreased the emulsion activity and increased the emulsion stability, most likely because of the corresponding increase in surface tension and viscosity. Results from antioxidant assays confirmed that the in-vitro radical scavenging activity of the mucilage increased with concentration. This study shows that C. olitorius L. can be utilized as a new hydrocolloid source, with potential applications in fields ranging from foods to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Edible starch-based film was developed for packaging seasoning applied in instant noodles. The edible film can quickly dissolve into hot water so that the seasoning bag can mix in the soup of instant noodles during preparation. To meet the specific requirements of the packaging, such as reasonable high tensile properties, ductility under arid conditions, and low gas permeability, hydroxypropyl cornstarch with various edible additives from food-grade ingredients were applied to enhance the functionality of starch film. In this work, xylose was used as a plasticizer, cellulose crystals were used as a reinforcing agent, and laver was used to decrease gas permeability. The microstructures, interface, and compatibility of various components and film performance were investigated using an optical microscope under polarized light, scanning electron microscope, gas permeability, and tensile testing. The relationship was established between processing methodologies, microstructures, and performances. The results showed that the developed starch-based film have a modulus of 960 MPa, tensile strength of 36 Mpa with 14% elongation, and water vapor permeability less than 5.8 g/m2.h under 20% RH condition at room temperature (25 °C), which meets the general requirements of the flavor bag packaging used in instant noodles.

Abstract
Natural mucilages are auspicious biodegradable polymeric materials. The aim of the present research work was to elucidate the characteristics of quince mucilage-based polymeric network for sustained delivery of metprolol tartrate and its toxicity evaluation. Mucilage was extracted by hot water extraction, and characterization of quince mucilage was accomplished by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Different batches of quince mucilage polymeric network were prepared by free radical polymerization by utilizing varying ratios of quince mucilage, acrylamide and crosslinker. Degree of swelling depends on concentration of mucilage, monomer and also on crosslinking density of polymeric network. FTIR illustrates proficient grafting, and morphological (scanning electron microscopy) analysis signified porous design. Hence, quince mucilage-based design was encouraging for sustained delivery of metprolol tartrate and acute toxicity evaluation proved that mucilage-based network was safe for oral drug delivery system.

Abstract
Plant mucilage is a renewable and cost-effective source of plant-based compounds that are biologically active, biodegradable, biocompatible, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly. Until recently, plant mucilage has been of interest mostly for technological purposes. This review examined both its traditional uses and potential modern applications in a new generation of health-promoting foods, as well as in cosmetics and biomaterials. We explored the nutritional, phytochemical, and pharmacological richness of plant mucilage, with a particular focus on its biological activity. We also highlighted areas where more research is needed in order to understand the full commercial potential of plant mucilage.

Abstract
Easily sourced mucus from various plant parts is an odorless, colorless and tasteless substance with emerging commercial potential in agriculture, food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals due to its non-toxic and biodegradable properties. It has been found that plant-derived mucilage can be used as a natural thickener or emulsifier and an alternative to synthetic polymers and additives. Because it is an invisible barrier that separates the surface from the surrounding atmosphere, it is used as edible coatings to extend the shelf life of fresh vegetables and fruits as well as many food products. In addition to its functional properties, mucilage can also be used for the production of nanocarriers. In this review, we focus on mucus extraction methods and its use as a natural preservative for fresh produce. We detailed the key properties related to the extraction and preservation of food, the mechanism of the effect of mucus on the sensory properties of products, coating methods when using mucus and its recipe for preserving fruit and vegetables. Understanding the ecological, economic and scientific factors of production and the efficiency of mucus as a multi-directional agent will open up its practical application in many industries.

Abstract
The degraded polysaccharides from Porphyra yezoensis (DPPY) prepared using the H2 O2 -Vc method under optimized conditions were isolated and purified by DEAE Cellulose-52, and Sephadex G-100, providing four pure components, namely, DPPY-0, DPPY-0.1, DPPY-0.3, and DPPY-0.5. Their relative molecular weights were measured to be 10.8, 10.7, 18.7, and 35.5 kDa, respectively. GC-MS analysis revealed that all the four fractions were mainly composed of galactose, together with a small portion of glucose, mannose, xylose, and rhamnose. Structural analysis revealed that the purified polysaccharides mainly possess a backbone of (1 → 3)-β-D-galactose (1 → 4)-3,6-anhydro-α-L-galactopyranose (G-A) units and (1 → 3)-β-D-galactose (1 → 4)-α-L-galactose-6-sulfate (G-L6S) units. They were found to promote the proliferation of RAW264.7 macrophages and enhance phagocytosis of the RAW264.7 cells. Antioxidant assays indicated that DPPY-0.5 possessed the most potent reducing power and free radical scavenging ability among the four purified polysaccharides. High sulfate content and proper molecular weight of these fractions are favorable to their immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Porphyra yezoensis, common economic red algae widely distributed in East Asian countries, contains a high content of polysaccharides with a variety of biological activities. However, P. yezoensis polysaccharide (PPY) has not been well utilized due to the relatively low biological activities and lack of understanding of its structure-activity relationship. Thus, it is necessary to improve the bioactivities and elucidate the structure-activity relationship of this polysaccharide for its practical use. In the present work, four purified fractions (DPPY-0, DPPY-0.1, DPPY-0.3, and DPPY-0.5) were isolated from the degraded P. yezoensis polysaccharide, and were investigated for their antioxidant and immunoregulatory activities. The results of the present work will lay a foundation for the application of the degraded P. yezoensis polysaccharide in the food industry as a functional food ingredient.

Abstract
In present study we explored powder of mucilaginous polysaccharides obtained from seeds of Cassia uniflora by determining its physicochemical, thermal, phytochemical, spectrophotometric and micrometric properties. The probable structure of isolated mucilaginous polysaccharide was determined using FTIR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, which demonstrated that the Cassia uniflora seed mucilage is rich in the polysaccharides residues (β-d-glucose) in the pyranose form. The mucilage was also explored for its gelling ability. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate the mucilage was amorphous in nature. This enables its application as a gelling agent in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries. It exhibits gelling ability at 1% w/w concentration. The mucilage exhibited swelling as well as pseudo plastic behaviour and good micrometric properties. Texture profile analysis of (3% w/w) prepared gel showed comparable properties of hardness, adhesiveness, gumminess and springiness to standard tragacanth. These features allow its application in food matrices and in pharmaceutical as a gelling and thickening agent.

Abstract
Carboxymethylation of Cassia obtusifolia galactomannan was carried out by Williamsons synthesis. Modification of galactomannan was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared and 1H-Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The degree of carboxymethyl substitution was found to be 1.69. Carboxymethylation was observed to increase the powder flow, solubility and swelling, while decrease the viscosity and alter the compression characteristics from elastic to plastic. The results of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy studies indicated increase in degree of crystallinity. The modified gum was used for preparing diclofenac sodium-loaded, Ca2+-gelled beads which were coated with gastroresistant Eudragit-L100. The formulation of beads was optimized using central composite experimental design. The optimal formulation of beads contained carboxymethylated Cassia galactomannan-2.85%,w/v and calcium chloride -15%,w/v, which showed yield -185.4%, entrapment-95.41% and release of 93.32% of diclofenac over 24 h. The release of diclofenac followed first-order kinetics by Super case-II transport. Thus, carboxymethyl Cassia galactomannan appears suitable for sustained drug delivery.

Abstract
Demand for safe, environmentally friendly and minimally processed food additives with intrinsic technological (stabilizing, texturizing, structuring) and functional potential is already on the rise. There are actually several natural excipients eligible for pharmaceutical formulation. Mucilage, as a class constitutes arabinoxylan and rhamnogalacturonan-based biomolecules used in the pharmaceutical, environmental as well as phytoremediation industries owing to its particular structure and properties. These compounds are widely used in pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics, as well as, in agriculture, paper industries. This review emphasizes mucilage valuable applications in the pharmaceutical and industrial fields. In this context, much focus has recently been given to the valorization of mucilage as an ingredient for food or nutraceutical applications. Furthermore, different optimization and extraction techniques are presented to develop better utilization and/or enhanced yield of mucilage. The highlighted mucilage extraction methods warrant assessing up-scale processes to encourage for its industrial applications. The current article capitalizes on cutting-edge characteristics of mucilage and posing for other possible innovative applications in non-food industries. Here, the first holistic overview of mucilage with regards to its physicochemical properties and potential novel usages is presented.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the prevalent and typical chronic liver diseases. In this study, we extracted a novel Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP) with low molecular weight (MW) of 3.2 kDa through optimized "one-step" purification process. The major monosaccharide components of ASP were mannose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, galactose, arabinose, and xylose with weight ratio of 0.23:0.17:14.41:0.39:1.68:0.87, respectively. Herein, "small" ASP could serve as an effective therapeutic option for NAFLD both in free fatty acid-induced L02 models and in high-fat diet-induced mice models. Results revealed that low MW ASP dose-dependently decreased TG, TC in vitro and TG, TC, ALT, HDL-C, and LDL-C in vivo. Oil Red O-positive area and Nile red fluorescence intensity decreased in ASP treatment groups both in vitro and in vivo which suggested ASP could reduce lipid accumulation and fatty regeneration. Hematoxylin-eosin staining results shown a decrease in hepatocytes ballooning indicating that ASP could ameliorate liver lipid degeneration. Briefly, a novel polysaccharide with low MW was successfully obtained which can prospectively act as NAFLD therapy.

Abstract
In recent years, environmental problems, consumer health concerns, and economic limitations associated with synthetic plastics have led to the application of renewable, biodegradable, and edible resources for developing food packaging. Edible packaging can be important in maintaining the food quality and preventing the microbial and chemical spoilage of foods. Several seeds can produce 'seed-based mucilage' with different techno-functional properties for application in various food products. In the field of packaging, these mucilages can be extruded into coatings and films and improve the barrier properties against the transfer of oxygen and moisture. Likewise, bioactive ingredients can also be incorporated into these mucilages which will extend the shelf life of food products. This study gives an overview of various seed mucilages, their production and characteristics of the films/coatings prepared with them for successful applications in different food products.

Abstract
In order to explore Cassia seed polysaccharides (CSPs) as natural antioxidants for application in the functional-food industry, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was optimized for the extraction of CSPs by using a response surface methodology. Furthermore, the chemical structures and antioxidant activities of CSPs extracted by MAE and hot water extraction were investigated and compared. The maximum extraction yield of CSPs extracted by MAE (8.02 ± 0.19%) was obtained at the optimized extraction parameters as follows: microwave power (415 W), extraction time (7.0 min), and ratio of water to raw material (51 mL/g). Additionally, the contents of the uronic acids, molecular weight, ratio of constituent monosaccharides, intrinsic viscosities, and degrees of esterification of CSPs were significantly affected by the MAE method. Moreover, CSPs exhibited remarkable 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) ABTS, 2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl) hydrazyl DPPH, nitric oxide, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities as well as reducing power. The high antioxidant activities observed in CSPs extracted by MAE could be partially attributed to its low molecular weights and high content of unmethylated galacturonic acid. Results indicate that the MAE method could be an efficient technique for the extraction of CSPs with high antioxidant activity, and CSPs could be further explored as functional food ingredients.

Abstract
Penthorum chinense Pursh (PCP) is a kind of functional food or medicine for liver protection. In the present work, Plackett-Burman design, steepest ascent method, and response surface methodology (RSM) were employed to obtain maximum total sugar yield. The experimental yield of 6.91% indicated a close agreement with the predicted yield of 7.00% of the model under optimized conditions. The major polysaccharide fraction (PCPP-1a) from PCPP was purified and identified as acidic polysaccharides with a high content of uronic acid (FT-IR, UV, HPGPC). PCPP had similar monosaccharide profile with PCPP-1a but was rich in galacturonic acid (HPLC). Both of PCPP and PCPP-1a possessed strong hydroxyl radical scavenging, DPPH radical scavenging, and Fe2+ chelating activities. Moreover, they were revealed to show strong anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting NO, TNF-α, and IL-1β release compared to LPS treatment in RAW264.7 cells. These data suggest that the polysaccharides from PCP could be potential natural products for treating ROS and inflammatory-related diseases.
