Abstract
INTRODUCTION The seeds of Plantago asiatica L., a folk herb, are rich in polysaccharides that possess antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Polysaccharides with lower molecular weights generally exhibit higher biological activity, so a method to efficiently extract low-molecular-weight polysaccharides from P. asiatica L. seeds (PLPs) is needed. OBJECTIVES The aim was to establish an efficient method for extracting polysaccharides from P. asiatica L. seeds while preserving their activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Response surface methodology was applied to determine the optimal polysaccharide extraction conditions. Subsequently, the extracted polysaccharides were characterized to determine their monosaccharide composition, physicochemical properties, and molecular weight. Their antioxidant activity was evaluated by measuring their ability to scavenge DPPH and ABTS free radicals. RESULTS An extraction yield of 9.17% was achieved under an ethanol concentration of 18.0% (w/w), a K2HPO4 concentration of 27.8% (w/w), a solvent-to-material ratio of 30:1 (mL/g), an ultrasound power of 203 W, and an extraction time of 39 min. Structural analyses indicated that this method might cause physicochemical changes in the conformation of PLPs and induce the degradation of PLP side chains but not the backbone. The antioxidant assay results showed that the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging rates of PLPs were 48.3% and 49.2%, respectively, while in the control group the radical scavenging rates were 35.5% and 37.1%, respectively. CONCLUSION The established method for extracting polysaccharides from P. asiatica L. seeds is efficient and reliable. The polysaccharides could be used as an important resource with antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are an important class of biomolecules derived from several sources. However, the inherent structure of polysaccharides prevents them from exhibiting favorable physicochemical properties, which restricts their development in agriculture, industry, food, and biomedicine. This paper systematically summarizes the changes in the primary and advanced structures of modified polysaccharides, and focuses on the effects of various modification methods on the hydrophobicity, rheological properties, emulsifying properties, antioxidant activity, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic activities of polysaccharides. Then there is a list the applications of modified polysaccharides in treating heavy metal pollutants, purifying water resources, improving beverage stability and bread quality, and precisely delivering the drug. When summarized and reviewed, the information above can shed further light on the relationship between polysaccharide structure and function. Determining the structure-activity relationship provides a scientific basis for the direction of molecular modifications of polysaccharides.

Abstract
Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is the residual biomass generated after harvesting the fruitbodies of edible/medicinal fungi. Disposal of SMS, the main by-product of the mushroom cultivation process, often leads to serious environmental problems and is financially demanding. Efficient recycling and valorization of SMS are crucial for the sustainable development of the mushroom industry in the frame of the circular economy principles. The physical properties and chemical composition of SMS are a solid fundament for developing several applications, and recent literature shows an increasing research interest in exploiting that inherent potential. This review provides a thorough outlook on SMS exploitation possibilities and discusses critically recent findings related to specific applications in plant and mushroom cultivation, animal husbandry, and recovery of enzymes and bioactive compounds.

Abstract
This study demonstrated the effects of semi-solid enzymolysis on physicochemical properties of fruiting body powders and polysaccharides from Hericium erinaceus and protective effects on gastric mucosal injury. Semi-solid enzymolysis could reduce the particle size, change the microstructure of fruiting body powders, increase the contents of soluble polysaccharide (26.26-67.04 %) and uronic acid (16.97-31.12 %) and reduce the molecular weight of polysaccharides. The digestibility of fruiting body powder of H. erinaceus after semi-solid enzymolysis was increased by 31.4 %, compared with that of the fruiting body powder of H. erinaceus without enzymolysis. Semi-solid enzymolysis could enhance the protective effects of the fruiting body powders and polysaccharides on ethanol-induced human gastric mucosal epithelial cells (GES-1) cells, increase the production of superoxide dismutase (SOD, 0-37.33 %) and catalase (CAT, 2.47-18.46 %), and inhibit the production of malonaldehyde (MDA, 2.45-19.62 %), myeloperoxidase (MPO, 0-13.54 %), interleukin (IL-6, 4.39-24.62 %) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α, 5.97-12.25 %). Semi-solid enzymolysis could improve the inhibition rate of the fruiting body powder on gastric ulcer (32.70-46.26 %), inhibit oxidative stress and inflammation, and protect rats with acute gastric mucosal injury against the stimulation of ethanol on gastric mucosa. In conclusion, semi-solid enzymolysis may enhance the protective effects of the fruiting body powders and polysaccharides on gastric mucosal injury.

Abstract
In the present study, a novel water-soluble polysaccharide (DNP-1) was isolated and purified from the root of Duhaldea nervosa via column chromatography. Structural analyses indicated that DNP-1 had a linear backbone consisting of (2→1)-linked β-D- fructofuranosyl residues, ending with a (2→1) bonded α-D-glucopyranose. DNP-1 was a homogeneous polysaccharide with an average molecular weight of 3.7 kDa. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory activity of DNP-1 was investigated in vitro. The concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including NO, TNF-α, MCP-1, IL-2, and IL-6, in the DNP-1 treatment group was suppressed in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. DNP-1 was able to improve inflammatory injury by inhibiting the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These investigations into this polysaccharide from the root of Duhaldea nervosa provide a scientific basis for the further development of this plant. The results indicate that this Duhaldea nervosa polysaccharide could be used as a potential natural source for the treatment of inflammatory injury.

Abstract
Lentinan (LNT) has been reported to have a wide range of functions, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties. LNT may provide a protective effect in dairy cow mastitis. In this study, we investigated the effect of LNT on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced injury of bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) and the possible mechanism. First, we treated BMECs with different concentrations of LPS to study the effects of LPS on oxidative stress and inflammation in BMECs. Then, we examined the effects of LNT by dividing the cells into seven groups: the control group (CON), LPS treatment group (LPS), Acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) pretreatment group (NAC + LPS), LNT pretreatment group (LNT + LPS), ML385 and LNT pretreatment group (ML385 + LNT + LPS), LNT treatment group (LNT) and NAC treatment group (NAC). The results showed that LPS-triggered intracellular ROS production and the downregulation of Nrf-2 and HO-1 in BMECs were blocked by LNT pretreatment. LNT inhibited the expression of inflammatory genes and proteins by inhibiting of NF-κB and MAPK. In addition, LNT attenuated LPS induced-apoptosis in BMECs. However, ML385 reversed the protective effect of LNT. Taken together, LNT can be used as a natural protective agent against LPS-triggered BMECs damage through its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects through modulation of the Nrf2 pathway.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are a widespread and serious global public health burden, particularly among the older population. At present, effective therapies do not exist, despite the increasing understanding of the different mechanisms of NDs. In recent years, some drugs, such as galantamine, entacapone, riluzole, and edaravone, have been proposed for the treatment of different NDs; however, they mainly concentrate on symptom management and confer undesirable side effects and adverse reactions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find novel drugs with fewer disadvantages and higher efficacy for the treatment of NDs. Mushroom polysaccharides are macromolecular complexes with multi-targeting bioactivities, low toxicity, and high safety. Some have been demonstrated to exhibit neuroprotective effects via their antioxidant, anti-amyloidogenic, anti-neuroinflammatory, anticholinesterase, anti-apoptotic, and anti-neurotoxicity activities, which have potential in the treatment of NDs. This review focuses on the different processes involved in ND development and progression, highlighting the neuroprotective activities and potential role of mushroom polysaccharides and summarizing the limitations and future perspectives of mushroom polysaccharides in the prevention and treatment of NDs.

Abstract
With the rapid growth of the global economy and the global population, the production of solid waste has increased remarkably. Mushrooms are gaining popularity among researchers for their ability to turn waste into nutrients. However, a large number of by-products are produced during the industrial processing of mushrooms. Traditional waste management, focusing on the utilization and disposal of mushroom by-products, has attracted the attention of researchers. Meanwhile, the circular economy has become a multidisciplinary research field, and the valorization of mushroom by-products is a very important part of circular economy research. Various mushroom by-products of mushroom are reviewed in this paper. By-products are used in food as raw materials or functional components, in livestock and poultry feed after grinding/fermentation, and as electrochemical materials and papermaking materials. The by-products can also be used to produce ethanol and other biological sources of energy, as absorbing substances in sewage treatment, and as fertilizer in soil amendment. Mushroom processing by-products can be applied in various fields. To improve production efficiency, new extraction technology (including supercritical fluid technology and microwave extraction technology) can be adopted to increase the bioactive substance content in the by-products. Choosing appropriate processing temperature, time, and other processing conditions can also enhance product quality. Finally, more research is needed on the cost-effective utilization of the by-products and the feasibility of industrialization. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In this study, a hot buffer soluble Houttuynia cordata polysaccharide (HBHP-3) with a molecular weight of 397.4 kDa was isolated from H. cordata. HBHP-3 was composed of rhamnose, arabinose, glucose, galactose and galacturonic acid with molar ratio of 16.0:12.6:4.6:18.1:15.6. Structural analysis showed that the main chain of HBHP-3 was composed of →2)-α-L-Rhap-(1→, →4)-α-D-GalpA-(1→ and →4)-β-D-Galp-(1→. There were branched chains of α-L-Araf-(1→, →5)-α-L-Araf-(1→, →4)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, →6)-β-D-Galp-(1→, β-D-Galp-(1→ connected to the O-4 positions of →2)-α-L-Rhap-(1→. HBHP-3 effectively inhibited the secretion of NO and the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in a dose-dependent manner in macrophages. HBHP-3 inhibited the phosphorylation of p65 and IκBα proteins as well, illustrating that HBHP-3 exerted its anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB pathway.

Abstract
The offspring of super-multiparous sows face problems such as decreased growth performance, poor meat quality and even diseases in animal husbandry. Gama-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has long been known to promote growth and suppress inflammation, but little is known about the mechanisms. A total of 72 growing-finishing pigs from the 8th generation were randomly allotted to 2 groups with 6 replicates per treatment to receive a corn–soybean basal diet or the basal diet supplemented 20 mg/kg GABA for 60 d. After the animal-trial period, samples of serum and liver were collected for further analysis. Additionally, a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory model using HepG2 cells was established to explore the role of GABA on regulating hepatic inflammation. The results indicated that inflammatory cell infiltration occurs in the liver of progeny of super-multiparous sows, and dietary supplementation with GABA influenced liver morphology, increased activities of antioxidant enzymes and decreased the expression abundance of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) and interleukin (IL)-1β, in the liver of growing-finishing pigs (P < 0.05). In addition, GABA supplementation increased mRNA expressions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) and GABA receptors (GABARs), and reduced the expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling (P < 0.05). Additionally, an in vitro experiment demonstrated that GABA decreased the expressions of hepatic TLR4/NF-κB signaling via activating GABARs under LPS-stress (P < 0.05). In summary, liver injury may affect the growth performance of growing-finishing pigs by changing hepatic mitochondrial metabolism, the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and TLR4/NF-κB pathway and that GABA supplementation has a restorative effect by acting on GABARs.

Abstract
The valorization of cellulose and lignin residues in an integrated biorefinery is of great significance to improve the overall economics but has been challenged by their structural recalcitrance, especially for lignin residue. In this work, a facile chemical conversion route to fabricating functional UV-blocking cellulose/lignin composite films through a facile dissolution-regeneration process using these biomass residues was proposed. Three representative lignin residues, i.e., aspen and poplar wood lignin, and corn stover (CS) lignin were assessed for their feasibility for the film fabrication. The UV-blocking performance of the composite films were comparatively investigated. Results showed that all these three lignin residues could enhance the UV-blocking property of the composite films, corresponding to the reduction in the optical energy band gap from 4.31 to 3.72 eV, while poplar lignin had a considerable content of chromophores and showed the best UV-blocking enhancement among these three assessing lignins. The enhancement of UV-blocking property was achieved without compromising the visible-light transparency, mechanical strength and thermal stability of the composite films even at 4% lignin loading. This work showed the high promise of integrating biomass residue conversion into lignocellulose biorefinery for a multi-production purpose.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of crude Fuzhuan brick tea polysaccharides (CFBTPS) and their purified fraction (FBTPS-3) on colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in mice were investigated. Both CFBTPS and FBTPS-3 exhibited intestinal anti-inflammatory activities, including restoring body weight, colon length and solid fecal weight, and decreasing the disease activity index score in mice. Moreover, the expression of lipocalin-2 in colitis could be significantly reduced. The inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, IFN-γ and TNF-α) and lipopolysaccharides in the serum and the expression of inflammation-related mRNA in the colon tissue were decreased. Both CFBTPS and FBTPS-3 could increase tight junction proteins (Occludin, Claudin-1 and ZO-1), promoting the intestinal barrier function. For gut microbiota, DSS treatment resulted in abnormal proliferation of Bifidobacteria, while FBTPS-3 could restore this disorder to a certain extent. In addition, FBPTS-3 promoted the growth of probiotics such as Bacteroides, Parasutterella and Collinsella. Both CFBTPS and FBTPS-3 could attenuate colitis; what's more, FBTPS-3 exhibited a better anti-inflammatory effect than CFBTPS.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the indirect immunomodulatory activities and its mechanism of enzymatic hydrolysis of Hericium erinaceus polysaccharides (EHEP) in the MODE-K/DCs co-culture model. According to the TEER value, transmission of phenol red and AKP activity of MODE-K cells, single model was established in order to evaluate the eligibility of MODE-K cells monolayer. Then the MODE-K/DCs co-culture model was set up and HEP and EHEP were added into the apical chamber, DCs were obtained for the expression of key surface markers, the ability of phagocytosis, the morphology, the secretion of cytokines and the production of target proteins. We found that after 21 d of culture, the MODE-K cells monolayer became intact and dense, which can be used for the MODE-K/DCs co-culture model. Under the treatment of HEP and EHEP, immature DCs become into mature DCs with the high expression of CD86 and MHCII, the low antigens up-taking, the typical morphology, the more content of IL-12 and TNF-α and the high level of TLR4, MyD88 and NF-κB proteins. However, compared with HEP, EHEP showed the better immunomodulatory activities. These findings indicated that EHEP could indirectly affect the immune function of DCs in the MODE-K/DCs co-culture model.

Abstract
The deficiency of chemical-synthesized antiviral drugs when applied in clinical therapy, such as drug resistance, and the lack of effective antiviral drugs to treat some newly emerging virus infections, such as COVID-19, promote the demand of novelty and safety anti-virus drug candidate from natural functional ingredient. Numerous studies have shown that some polysaccharides sourcing from edible and medicinal fungus (EMFs) exert direct or indirect anti-viral capacities. However, the internal connection of fungus type, polysaccharides structural characteristics, action mechanism was still unclear. Herein, our review focus on the two aspects, on the one hand, we discussed the type of anti-viral EMFs and the structural characteristics of polysaccharides to clarify the structure-activity relationship, on the other hand, the directly or indirectly antiviral mechanism of EMFs polysaccharides, including virus function suppression, immune-modulatory activity, anti-inflammatory activity, regulation of population balance of gut microbiota have been concluded to provide a comprehensive theory basis for better clinical utilization of EMFs polysaccharides as anti-viral agents.

Abstract
Macrofungi production and economic value have been increasing globally. The demand for macrofungi has expanded rapidly owing to their popularity among consumers, pleasant taste, and unique flavors. The presence of high quality proteins, polysaccharides, unsaturated fatty acids, minerals, triterpene sterols, and secondary metabolites makes macrofungi an important commodity. Macrofungi are well known for their ability to protect from or cure various health problems, such as immunodeficiency, cancer, inflammation, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity. Many studies have demonstrated their medicinal properties, supported by both in vivo and in vitro experimental studies, as well as clinical trials. Numerous bioactive compounds isolated from mushrooms, such as polysaccharides, proteins, fats, phenolic compounds, and vitamins, possess strong bioactivities. Consequently, they can be considered as an important source of nutraceuticals. Numerous edible mushrooms have been studied for their bioactivities, but only a few species have made it to the market. Many species remain to be explored. The converging trends and popularity of eastern herbal medicines, natural/organic food product preference, gut-healthy products, and positive outlook towards sports nutrition are supporting the growth in the medicinal mushroom market. The consumption of medicinal mushrooms as functional food or dietary supplement is expected to markedly increase in the future. The global medicinal mushroom market size is projected to increase by USD 13.88 billion from 2018 to 2022. The global market values of promising bioactive compounds, such as lentinan and lovastatin, are also expected to rise. With such a market growth, mushroom nutraceuticals hold to be very promising in the years to come.

Abstract
Lentinus edodes, an important edible mushroom cultivated in East Asia for thousands of years, has been widely used as food and medicinal ingredient worldwide. Modern phytochemistry studies have demonstrated that L. edodes is very rich in bioactive polysaccharides, especially the β-glucans. Over the past two decades, the isolation, chemical properties, and bioactivities of polysaccharides from fruiting bodies, mycelium and fermentation broth of L. edodes have been drawing much attention from scholars around the world. It has been demonstrated that L. edodes polysaccharides possess various remarkable biological activities, including anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, anti-aging, anti-inflammation, immunomodulatory, antiviral, and hepatoprotection effects. This review summarizes the recent development of polysaccharides from L. edodes including the isolation methods, structural features, bioactivities and mechanisms, and their structure-activity relationship, which can provide useful research underpinnings and update information for their further application as therapeutic agents and functional foods.

Abstract
A novel acidic polysaccharide, named as AWPA, was extracted form Annona squamosa residue by 0.1 M NaOH alkaline solution and purified by DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex G-150. HPLC analysis indicated that AWPA was a homogeneous polysaccharide with molecular weight of 3.08 × 103 kDa. The monosaccharide composition of AWPA, determined by ion chromatography, was consisted of L-arabinose, D-galactose, d-glucose, D-mannose, D-galacturonic acid in a percentage of 15.58:13.48:60.14:9.02:1.78, respectively. The results of FT-IR, methylation and NMR showed that the sugar residue of AWPA were mainly composed of α-L-Araf-(1→, →4)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, →4)-β-D-Galp-(1→, →6)-β-D-Glcp-(1→, →4,6)-β-D-Galp(1→, →3,6)-α-D-Manp-(1→, respectively. The Congo red experiment on AWPA showed that there was helix conformation. The microstructure of AWPA was detected by scanning electron microscopy, showing that the shape of AWPA was reticular and its structure was irregular. AWPA had effectively α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and α-amylase inhibitory activity with IC50 of 0.667 mg/mL and 1.360 mg/mL, respectively. The inhibitory effects of AWPA on α-glucosidase and α-amylase were both reversible with mixed type and competitive type competition, respectively. The significance of manuscript was not only to avoid the waste of Annona squamosa residue, but provided alternative in the developments of inhibitors of α-glucosidase and α-amylase.

Abstract
Oxidative stress of neurons caused by a series of complex neuropathological processes will induce certain neurodegenerative disorders including epilepsy. Curcumin (Cur) is an effective natural antioxidant compound; however, the poor bioavailability obstructs its neural protective applications. In this study, Cur is encapsulated in solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) for better neuroprotective efficacy. In vitro study certified that Cur-SLNs functioned obviously better against neuronal apoptosis than Cur, by significantly decreasing the level of free radical and reversing mitochondrial function through the activation of the Bcl-2 family. In vivo experiments showed that SLNs transported Cur through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The behavioral performance of epileptic mice was improved by Cur-SLNs, with more NeuN but less TUNEL positive cells observed in hippocampus. The in vivo mechanism was also explored. Cur-SLNs reduced neuronal apoptosis through Bcl2 family and P38 MAPK pathways. Overall, Cur-SLNs have better protective effects toward oxidative stress in neurons than free Cur both in vitro and in vivo, which suggests they may be a promising agent against neurodegenerative disorders including epilepsy.

Abstract
In the present study, the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of four purified polysaccharides (CLGP1, CLGP2, CLGP3 and CLGP4) extracted from edible green algae Caulerpa lentillifera was evaluated. As a result, CLGP4 exhibited more effectively inhibitory effect on LPS-induced HT29 cells, including reducing the production of IL-1β, TNF-α, SIgA and mucin2, and decreasing the expression of IL-1β and TNF-α. According to the results, CLGP4 showed a better anti-inflammatory effect, might highly related to the presence of sulfate groups. Furthermore, the structure of CLGP4 was analyzed by methylation analysis, GC-MS and NMR spectroscopy. It was found that CLGP4 was a novel xylogalactomanan consisting of β-(1 → 4)-Manp, →2,4)Manp(1→, β-(1 → 2)-Manp, β-(1 → 3)-Galp, β-(1 → 4)-Xylp, terminal β-Galp and terminal β-Xylp residues. Additionally, the sulfate groups were located on C-3 of →4)Xylp(1→, C-6 of →3)Galp(1→ and C-3 of →2)Manp(1→. These results could enlarge the potential application of CLGP4 as functional ingredient to attenuate inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Inflammatory bowel disease results from a dysregulated immune response to intestinal microbial flora in individuals with genetic predisposition(s). This study aimed to determine the effects of compound polysaccharides (CP) containing yam polysaccharide and inulin on the rat model of colitis induced by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) and to explain the mechanism in terms of gut microbiota composition and function. METHODS Male SD rats were divided into three groups: the control group, the model group, and the CP group. Disease activity index, serum myeloperoxidase level, and the composition and function of gut microbiota were analyzed. RESULTS The data in the study showed CP reduced inflammation in the rat model of colitis induced by TNBS and ameliorated the experimental colitis. The results also indicated that CP not only reversed TNBS-induced gut dysbiosis-indexed by increased short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producing bacteria, lactic acid-producing bacteria, and decreased Bacteroides, Proteobacteria as well as sulfate-reducing bacteria, but also restored the dysregulated microbiota function of colitic rats into a normal condition, including an improvement on basic metabolism and a reduction on oxidative stress, cell motility, signal transduction, xenobiotics biodegradation, and metabolism as well as pathogenesis processes. CONCLUSIONS Compound polysaccharides ameliorated the experimental colitis of rats induced by TNBS by modulating the gut microbiota composition and function profiles, which makes it possible to be used as prebiotic agents to treat gut dysbiosis in colitis individuals.

Abstract
We wished to investigate the role of a tilapia skin collagen polypeptide (TSCP; molecular weight <3 kDa) in alleviating liver and kidney injuries in aging mice induced by d-galactose (d-gal) and its underlying mechanism of action. First, we characterized TSCP. TSCP was passed through a 3-kDa ultrafiltration membrane, desalted in water by a solid-phase extraction column, purified further by reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography, and analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry. TSCP contained 17 types of amino acids (AAs) and 41 peptide chains of length 7 AAs to 22 AAs. The content of free AAs and total AAs of TSCP was 13.5% and 93.79%, respectively. Next, we undertook animal experiments. Mice were injected once-daily with D-gal (300 mg/kg body weight, s.c.) for 8 weeks, and TSCP was administered simultaneously once-daily by intragastric gavage. TSCP could visibly improve the decreased body weight, depressed appetite, and mental deterioration of mice triggered by d-gal. TSCP could also alleviate d-gal-induced damage to the liver and kidneys according to histopathology (especially high-dose TSCP). Consistent with these macroscopic and pathologic changes, TSCP could also prevent d-gal-induced increases in serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, lipid peroxidation, creatinine and uric acid, as well as decreases in serum levels of immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM. Moreover, TSCP improved the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, but also inhibited the increases in the levels of malondialdehyde and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression in the liver and kidneys of d-gal-treated mice. These results suggest that TSCP can alleviate the injuries to the liver and kidneys in aging mice induced by d-gal, and that its mechanism of action might be, at least partially, associated with attenuation of oxidative stress and enhancement of immune function.

Abstract
Immunoisolation of pancreatic islets is a technology in which islets are encapsulated in semipermeable but immunoprotective polymeric membranes. The technology allows for successful transplantation of insulin-producing cells in the absence of immunosuppression. Different approaches of immunoisolation are currently under development. These approaches involve intravascular devices that are connected to the bloodstream and extravascular devices that can be distinguished in micro- and macrocapsules and are usually implanted in the peritoneal cavity or under the skin. The technology has been subject of intense fundamental research in the past decade. It has co-evolved with novel replenishable cell sources for cure of diseases such as Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus that need to be protected for the host immune system. Although the devices have shown significant success in animal models and even in human safety studies most technologies still suffer from undesired tissue responses in the host. Here we review the past and current approaches to modulate and reduce tissue responses against extravascular cell-containing micro- and macrocapsules with a focus on rational choices for polymer (combinations). Choices for polymers but also choices for crosslinking agents that induce more stable and biocompatible capsules are discussed. Combining beneficial properties of molecules in diblock polymers or application of these molecules or other anti-biofouling molecules have been reviewed. Emerging are also the principles of polymer brushes that prevent protein and cell-adhesion. Recently also immunomodulating biomaterials that bind to specific immune receptors have entered the field. Several natural and synthetic polymers and even combinations of these polymers have demonstrated significant improvement in outcomes of encapsulated grafts. Adequate polymeric surface properties have been shown to be essential but how the surface should be composed to avoid host responses remains to be identified. Current insight is that optimal biocompatible devices can be created which raises optimism that immunoisolating devices can be created that allows for long term survival of encapsulated replenishable insulin-producing cell sources for treatment of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.
