Abstract
The objective of the current work was to evaluate the impacts of dielectric barrier discharge plasma and repeated dry-heat treatments on the acetylation process of corn starch. The combined modification resulted in a higher substitution degree of acetate groups on starch chains compared to the acetylation treatment alone. This outcome was linked to the increase in surface area and structural organization level of granules achieved through the application of plasma and heating/cooling cycles, respectively. The successful esterification of starch structure was verified through FTIR (1710 cm-1) and 1H NMR (2 ppm). With the increase in plasma treatment duration up to 20 min, gelatinization enthalpy increased (10.81 J/g) due to the cross-linking reaction. Starch acetate produced through the combined treatment could find the application in the development of low-calorie food formulations due to its high resistant starch (70.5 g/100 g) and low viscosity (43 mPa s).

Abstract
Starch is a biomass polymer material with a high yield and comprehensive source. It is used as a raw material for preparing adhesives because of its highly active hydroxyl group. However, poor adhesion and water resistance hinder the application of starch-based adhesives (SBAs). Based on this, the starch was modified through graft copolymerization with itaconic acid as a cross-linking agent, methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate as copolymers. Additionally, reed fibers were synergistically modified with polydopamine deposition to prepare an environmentally friendly SBA used in plywood production. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) demonstrate that copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate with starch improves the shear strength, water resistance, and thermal stability of the SBA. Compared to unmodified starch, the modified SBA exhibits a 129 % increase in dry strength and achieves a wet strength of 1.36 MPa. Fukui function, Frontier orbit theory, and molecular dynamics simulation have shown that itaconic acid promotes the copolymerization of starch and acrylate monomers. The modified starch has fewer hydrogen bonds, less order, and a denser macromolecular network structure, which provides a reference for studying the molecular interaction mechanisms of SBAs.

Abstract
In this research, the cationization process of microporous starch with betaine hydrochloride (BHC) in the presence of H3PO4 (as a catalyst) under heating/cooling cycles was reported for the first time. Granular microporous starch was initially prepared from normal corn starch (NS) through amyloglucosidase treatment. Then, solid state cationization reaction of microporous starch (MS) with betaine hydrochloride (BHC) was performed under repeated dry-heat modification. The cationic microporous starch showed higher substitution degree (0.031) and reaction efficiency (89.1 %) in comparison with cationic starch based on NS (0.021, 60.3 %), which this can be attributed to the increased probability of effective collision between BHC molecules and starch granules after enzymatic treatment. The analysis of cationic starches by FTIR and 13C NMR confirmed the presence of cationic functional groups on starch chains. Further examinations on the modified starches by single and dual treatments were accomplished with respect to morphology, particle size distribution, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), colour parameters, zeta potential, amylose content, viscosity, solubility, and swelling power. The greenness of the suggested dual treatment (score: 82) in this work was evaluated and compared to a conventional method reported in literature (score: 67) on the preparation of cationic starches.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of electron beam irradiation (EBI) pretreatment on the multiscale structure and physicochemical properties of esterified starch, this study used EBI pretreatment to prepare glutaric anhydride (GA) esterified proso millet starch. GA starch did not show the corresponding distinct thermodynamics peaks. However, it had a high pasting viscosity and transparency (57.46-74.25 %). EBI pretreatment increased the degree of glutaric acid esterification (0.0284-0.0560) and changed its structure and physicochemical properties. EBI pretreatment disrupted its short-range ordering structure, reducing the crystallinity, molecular weight and pasting viscosity of glutaric acid esterified starch. Moreover, it produced more short chains and increased the transparency (84.28-93.11 %) of glutaric acid esterified starch. This study could offer a rationale for using EBI pretreatment technology to maximize the functional properties of GA modified starch and enlarge its implementation in modified starch.

Abstract
For the first time, the current work applied fungal α-amylase treated corn starch in granular form to produce solid state malate-esterified starch (MES). The pores and channels created on the granules after the enzymatic modification could provide more possibilities for malic acid to esterify the starch, resulting in the increase of substitution degree (0.084) and reaction efficiency (86.6%) compared to NS. Based on the obtained results, the dual treatment significantly increased solubility, amylose content, and syneresis, but reduced transparency, viscosity, digestibility rate, and swelling power compared to those of NS. The occurrence of esterification onto starch chains was confirmed by FT-IR at 1720 cm-1. Other techniques including SEM, XRD, and DSC were employed to examine changes in the structure of starch granules after applying each treatment. Also, the greenness of the combined modification (score: 77) was proved by using a new methodology named Eco-Scale.

Abstract
Maleic anhydride-diethylenetriamine grafted on starch (st-g-(MA-DETA)) was synthesized through graft copolymerization, and the different parameters (copolymerization temperature, reaction time, concentration of initiator and monomer concentration) affecting starch graft percentage were studied to achieve the maximum grafting percentage. The maximum grafting percentage was found to be 29.17%. The starch and grafted starch copolymer were characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDS, NMR, and TGA analytical techniques to describe copolymerization. The crystallinity of starch and grafted starch was studied by XRD, confirming that grafted starch has a semicrystalline nature and indicating that the grafting reaction took place typically in the amorphous region of starch. NMR and IR spectroscopic techniques confirmed the successful synthesis of the st-g-(MA-DETA) copolymer. A TGA study revealed that grafting affects the thermal stability of starch. An SEM analysis showed the microparticles are distributed unevenly. Modified starch with the highest grafting ratio was then applied to celestine dye removal from water using different parameters. The experimental results indicated that St-g-(MA-DETA) has excellent dye removal properties in comparison to native starch.

Abstract
Most amino acid molecules have good water solubility and are rich in functional groups, which makes them a promising derivatizing agent for cellulose. However, self-condensation of amino acids and low reaction efficiency always happen during esterification. Here, amino acid hydrochloride ([AA]Cl) is selected as raw material to synthesize cellulose amino acid ester (CAE). Based on TG-MS coupling technology, a significantly faster reaction rate of [AA]Cl compared to raw amino acid can be observed visually. CAE with the degree of substitution 0.412-0.516 is facilely synthesized under 130-170 °C for 10-50 min. Moreover, the effects of amounts of [AA]Cl agent, temperature, and time on the esterification are studied. The CAE can be well dissolved in 7 wt% NaOH aq., resulting in a 7.5 wt% dope. The rheological test of the dope demonstrated a shear-thinning behavior for Newtonian-like fluid, and a high gel temperature (41.7 °C). Further, the synthesized products show distinct antibacterial activity and the bacteriostatic reduction rate against E. coli can reach 99.5 %.

Abstract
Consumer trends towards environmentally friendly products are driving plastics industries to investigate more benign alternatives to petroleum-based polymers. In the case of adhesives, one possibility to achieve sustainable production is to use non-toxic, low-cost starches as biodegradable raw materials for adhesive production. While native starch contains only hydroxyl groups and has limited scope, chemically modified starch shows superior water resistance properties for adhesive applications. Esterified starches, starches with ester substituents, can be feasibly produced and utilized to prepare bio-based adhesives with improved water resistance. Syntheses of esterified starch materials can involve esterification, transesterification, alkylation, acetylation, succinylation, or enzymatic reactions. The main focus of this review is on the production of esterified starches and their utilization in adhesive applications (for paper, plywood, wood composites, fiberboard, and particleboard). The latter part of this review discusses other processes (etherification, crosslinking, grafting, oxidation, or utilizing biobased coupling agents) to prepare modified starches that can be further applied in adhesive production. Further discussion on the characteristics of modified starch materials and required processing methods for adhesive production is also included.

Abstract
Propionylated potato starch (PPS) with different degrees of substitution (DS) was prepared from native potato starch (NPS) and their potential to encapsulate Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) was analyzed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed a characteristic peak of propionyl groups, which appeared at 1746 cm-1, demonstrating that propionylation occurred. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that the characteristic diffraction peak intensity of PPS gradually disappeared with the increasing of the DS, which was related to the loss of the ordered crystalline structure of starch granules. Propionylation resulted in the starch to be more thermally stable than its native starch. Furthermore, the propionylated starch had a higher resistance to digestion and hydrophobicity. More importantly, the micro-capsulated LGG derived from propionylated starch could achieve a maximum embedding efficiency of 87.77% at starch DS = 1.54, and also demonstrated a higher resistance to a strong acidic condition and a greater storage stability at 4 °C. This study may highlight a novel approach for probiotic encapsulation using propionylated potato starch as an encapsulant.

Abstract
Despite being a promising butyrate carrier, butyrylated starch remains poorly understood in terms of the correlation between starch structure and fermentation characteristics. Herein, three butyrylated starches derived from different botanical sources were prepared with a similar degree of substitution. Raman microscopy and water contact angle analysis suggested that a relatively large proportion of butyl group substitutions occurred within the interior of butyrylated waxy maize starch (B-WMS) granules. In vitro digestion results showed that branch points provided butyl groups with a specific protection from enzymatic hydrolysis, whereas butyl groups significantly increased the resistant starch content of butyrylated starch. Moreover, the porous morphology with less distributed butyl groups on the granular surface contributed to a faster fermentation rate in B-WMS. The current study reveals the influence of botanical origin on butyl group distribution, which in turn plays a pivotal role in regulating the intestinal digestion and colonic fermentation of butyrylated starch.

Abstract
The physicochemical properties of starch acetates with an equal degree of substitution prepared from pea, corn, and wheat starch and their effects on frozen cooked noodle (FCN) quality were investigated. The result showed that the three kinds of starch acetates had different effects on the quality of FCN due to their different blue values, freeze-thaw stability, and crystalline morphology analyzed by XRD (p < .05). The FCN with the addition of 20% CAS exhibited slow deterioration of textural properties during holding for 30 min. The analysis of the changes in the content of free SH group and glutenin macropolymer (GMP) demonstrated that the addition of CAS promoted protein disulfide cross-linking and decreased protein mobility during holding. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed that FCN with the addition of CAS had low decrement in α-helix and β-sheet during holding, indicating that starch acetates contributed to the maintenance of the gluten network structure.

Abstract
In this work, a novel starch phosphate carbamate hydrogel (SPC-Hydrogel) and its corresponding urea hydrogel (SPCU-Hydrogel) slow-release fertilizer (SRF) were prepared by one-step free radical copolymerization of SPC and acrylamide (AM) without and with urea addition. A series of characterization measurements including FTIR, XRD, EDS, XPS are utilized to confirm the successful formation of the SPC-Hydrogel. The SEM shows SPC-Hydrogel has a porous three-dimensional network architecture. Furthermore, SPC-Hydrogel matrix exhibits superior water absorbency achieving 80.2 g/g than that (70.5 g/g) of the native starch hydrogel (NS-Hydrogel) and desirable water retention capacity in soil with a weight loss of only 48% for 13 days. Compared with pure urea and NS based urea hydrogel (NSU-Hydrogel), the SPCU-Hydrogel releases 50.3% for 15 h, achieving an almost complete release more than 25 h in aqueous phase. While only 46.6% of urea is released in 20 days which extends about 30 days in soil column assays. The maize seedlings growth assays also present an intuitive evaluation on the prominent soil water holding and plant growth promotion role of SPCU-Hydrogel. In conclusion, the present work has demonstrated a novel strategy via preparing biomass hydrogel SRF to enhance the utilization effectiveness of fertilizer and retain soil humidity.
