Dual-crosslinked nanocomposite hydrogels based on quaternized chitosan and clindamycin-loaded hyperbranched nanoparticles for potential antibacterial applications

Advances in enhancing the mechanical properties of biopolymer hydrogels via multi-strategic approaches

The limited mechanical properties of biopolymer-based hydrogels have hindered their widespread applications in biomedicine and tissue engineering. In recent years, researchers have shown significant interest in developing novel approaches to enhance the mechanical performance of hydrogels. This review focuses on key strategies for enhancing mechanical properties of hydrogels, including dual-crosslinking, double networks, and nanocomposite hydrogels, with a comprehensive analysis of their underlying mechanisms, benefits, and limitations. It also introduces the classic application scenarios of biopolymer-based hydrogels and the direction of future research efforts, including wound dressings and tissue engineering based on 3D bioprinting. This review is expected to deepen the understanding of the structure-mechanical performance-function relationship of hydrogels and guide the further study of their biomedical applications.

Construction of bupivacaine-loaded gelatin-based hydrogel delivery system for sciatic nerve block in mice

Peripheral nerve blockade (PNB) is a common treatment to relieve postoperative pain. However, local anesthetics alone have a short duration of action and severe side effects during postoperative analgesia. In order to overcome these limitations, the present study reported an injectable hydrogel with a drug slow-release profile for regional nerve blockade. The injectable hydrogel was prepared by crosslinking with gelatin and NHS-PEG-NHS, which was degradable in the physiological environment and displayed sustainable release of anesthetics locally, thus improving the disadvantage of the high toxicity of local anesthetics. In this regard, we conducted a series of in vitro characterizations and proved that the hydrogel has a porous three-dimensional mesh structure with high drug loading capability, and sustainable drug release profile. And cytotoxicity experiments confirmed the good biocompatibility of the hydrogel. It was shown that using the animal sciatic nerve block model, the analgesic effect was greatly improved in vivo, and there was no obvious evidence of permanent inflammation or nerve damage in the block site's sections. This locally slow-release platform, combined with local anesthetics, is therefore a promising contender for long-acting analgesia.

Glucose-Responsive Self-Healing Bilayer Drug Microneedles Promote Diabetic Wound Healing Via a Trojan-Horse Strategy

Chronic nonhealing wounds are serious complications of diabetes with a high morbidity, and they can lead to disability or death. Conventional drug therapy is ineffective for diabetic wound healing because of the complex environment of diabetic wounds and the depth of drug penetration. Here, we developed a self-healing, dual-layer, drug-carrying microneedle (SDDMN) for diabetic wound healing. This SDDMN can realize transdermal drug delivery and broad-spectrum sterilization without drug resistance and meets the multiple needs of the diabetic wound healing process. Quaternary ammonium chitosan cografted with dihydrocaffeic acid (Da) and l-arginine and oxidized hyaluronic acid-dopamine are the main parts of the self-healing hydrogel patch. Methacrylated poly(vinyl alcohol) (methacrylated PVA) and phenylboronic acid (PBA) were used as the main part of the MN, and gallium porphyrin modified with 3-amino-1,2 propanediol (POGa) and insulin were encapsulated at its tip. Under hyperglycaemic conditions, the PBA moiety in the MN reversibly formed a glucose-boronic acid complex that promoted the rapid release of POGa and insulin. POGa is disguised as hemoglobin through a Trojan-horse strategy, which is then taken up by bacteria, allowing it to target bacteria and infected lesions. Based on the synergistic properties of these components, SDDMN-POGa patches exhibited an excellent biocompatibility, slow drug release, and antimicrobial properties. Thus, these patches provide a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of diabetic wounds.

Nanoparticles incorporated hydrogels for delivery of antimicrobial agents: developments and trends

The prevention and treatment of microbial infections is an imminent global public health concern due to the poor antimicrobial performance of the existing antimicrobial regime and rapidly emerging antibiotic resistance in pathogenic microbes. In order to overcome these problems and effectively control bacterial infections, various new treatment modalities have been identified. To attempt this, various micro- and macro-molecular antimicrobial agents that function by microbial membrane disruption have been developed with improved antimicrobial activity and lesser resistance. Antimicrobial nanoparticle-hydrogels systems comprising antimicrobial agents (antibiotics, biological extracts, and antimicrobial peptides) loaded nanoparticles or antimicrobial nanoparticles (metal or metal oxide) constitute an important class of biomaterials for the prevention and treatment of infections. Hydrogels that incorporate nanoparticles can offer an effective strategy for delivering antimicrobial agents (or nanoparticles) in a controlled, sustained, and targeted manner. In this review, we have described an overview of recent advancements in nanoparticle-hydrogel hybrid systems for antimicrobial agent delivery. Firstly, we have provided an overview of the nanoparticle hydrogel system and discussed various advantages of these systems in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Thereafter, different hybrid hydrogel systems encapsulating antibacterial metal/metal oxide nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, antibiotics, biological extracts, and antimicrobial peptides for controlling infections have been reviewed in detail. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of nanoparticle-hydrogel systems have been discussed.

Targeted Clindamycin Delivery Systems: Promising Options for Preventing and Treating Bacterial Infections Using Biomaterials

Targeted therapy represents a real opportunity to improve the health and lives of patients. Developments in this field are confirmed by the fact that the global market for drug carriers was worth nearly $40 million in 2022. For this reason, materials engineering and the development of new drug carrier compositions for targeted therapy has become a key area of research in pharmaceutical drug delivery in recent years. Ceramics, polymers, and metals, as well as composites, are of great interest, as when they are appropriately processed or combined with each other, it is possible to obtain biomaterials for hard tissues, soft tissues, and skin applications. After appropriate modification, these materials can release the drug directly at the site requiring a therapeutic effect. This brief literature review characterizes routes of drug delivery into the body and discusses biomaterials from different groups, options for their modification with clindamycin, an antibiotic used for infections caused by aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria, and different methods for the final processing of carriers. Examples of coating materials for skin wound healing, acne therapy, and bone tissue fillers are given. Furthermore, the reasons why the use of antibiotic therapy is crucial for a smooth and successful recovery and the risks of bacterial infections are explained. It was demonstrated that there is no single proven delivery scheme, and that the drug can be successfully released from different carriers depending on the destination.

Oxidized Dextran/Chitosan Hydrogel Engineered with Tetrasulfide-Bridged Silica Nanoparticles for Postsurgical Treatment

Tumor recurrence and wound microbial infection after tumor excision are serious threats to patients. Thus, the strategy to supply a sufficient and sustained release of cancer drugs and simultaneously engineer antibacterial properties and satisfactory mechanical strength is highly desired for tumor postsurgical treatment. Herein, A novel double-sensitive composite hydrogel embedded with tetrasulfide-bridged mesoporous silica (4S-MSNs) is developed. The incorporation of 4S-MSNs into oxidized dextran/chitosan hydrogel network, not only enhances the mechanical properties of hydrogels, but also can increase the specificity of drug with dual pH/redox sensitivity, thereby allowing more efficient and safer therapy. Besides, 4S-MSNs hydrogel preserves the favorable physicochemical properties of polysaccharide hydrogel, such as high hydrophilicity, satisfactory antibacterial activity, and excellent biocompatibility. Thus, the prepared 4S-MSNs hydrogel can be served as an efficient strategy for postsurgical bacterial infection and inhibition of tumor recurrence.

Quaternary-ammonium chitosan, a promising packaging material in the food industry

Quaternary-ammonium chitosan (QAC) is a polysaccharide with good water solubility, bacteriostasis, and biocompatibility. QAC is obtained by methylating or grafting the quaternary-ammonium group of chitosan and is an important compound in the food industry. Various QAC-based complexes have been prepared using reversible intermolecular interactions, such as electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, metal coordination, host-guest interactions, and covalent bonding interactions consisting of Schiff base bonding and dynamic chemical bond cross-linking. In the food industry, QAC is often used as a substrate in film or coating for food preservation and as a carrier for active substances to improve the encapsulation efficiency and storage stability of functional food ingredients. In this review, we have assimilated the latest information on QAC to facilitate further discussions and future research. Advancement in research on QAC would contribute toward technology acceleration and its increased contribution to the field of food technology.

Nanocomposite Hydrogels-A Promising Approach towards Enhanced Bioavailability and Controlled Drug Delivery

Nanotechnology has emerged as the eminent focus of today's research to overcome challenges related to conventional drug delivery systems. A wide spectrum of novel delivery systems has been investigated to improve the therapeutic outcomes of drugs. The polymer-based nanocomposite hydrogels (NCHs) that have evolved as efficient carriers for controlled drug delivery are of particular interest in this regard. Nanocomposites amalgamate the properties of both nanoparticles (NPs) as well as hydrogels, exhibiting superior functionalities over conventional hydrogels. This multiple functionality is based upon advanced mechanical, electrical, optical as well as magnetic properties. Here is a brief overview of the various types of nanocomposites, such as NCHs based on Carbon-bearing nanomaterials, polymeric nanoparticles, inorganic nanoparticles, and metal and metal-oxide NPs. Accordingly, this article will review numerous ways of preparing these NCHs with particular emphasis on the vast biomedical applications displayed by them in numerous fields such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, bioprinting, biosensing, imaging and gene silencing, cancer therapy, antibacterial therapy, etc. Moreover, various features can be tuned, based on the final application, by controlling the chemical composition of hydrogel network, which may also influence the released conduct. Subsequently, the recent work and future prospects of this newly emerging class of drug delivery system have been enlisted.

Polysaccharide-based hydrogel promotes skin wound repair and research progress on its repair mechanism

Polysaccharides, being a natural, active, and biodegradable polymer, have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional properties. These properties make them ideal for creating multifunctional hydrogels that can be used as wound dressings for skin injuries. Polysaccharide hydrogel has the ability to both simulate the natural extracellular matrix, promote cell proliferation, and provide a suitable environment for wound healing while protecting it from bacterial invasion. Polysaccharide hydrogels offer a promising solution for repairing damaged skin. This review provides an overview of the mechanisms involved in skin damage repair and emphasizes the potential of polysaccharide hydrogels in this regard. For different skin injuries, polysaccharide hydrogels can play a role in promoting wound healing. However, we still need to conduct more research on polysaccharide hydrogels to provide more possibilities for skin damage repair.

Advances in preparation and application of antibacterial hydrogels

Bacterial infections, especially those caused by drug-resistant bacteria, have seriously threatened human life and health. There is urgent to develop new antibacterial agents to reduce the problem of antibiotics. Biomedical materials with good antimicrobial properties have been widely used in antibacterial applications. Among them, hydrogels have become the focus of research in the field of biomedical materials due to their unique three-dimensional network structure, high hydrophilicity, and good biocompatibility. In this review, the latest research progresses about hydrogels in recent years were summarized, mainly including the preparation methods of hydrogels and their antibacterial applications. According to their different antibacterial mechanisms, several representative antibacterial hydrogels were introduced, such as antibiotics loaded hydrogels, antibiotic-free hydrogels including metal-based hydrogels, antibacterial peptide and antibacterial polymers, stimuli-responsive smart hydrogels, and light-mediated hydrogels. In addition, we also discussed the applications and challenges of antibacterial hydrogels in biomedicine, which are expected to provide new directions and ideas for the application of hydrogels in clinical antibacterial therapy.

Applications and perspectives of quaternized cellulose, chitin and chitosan: A review

Recently, increasing attention has been paid to natural polysaccharides for their low cost, biocompatibility and biodegradability. Quaternization is a modification method to improve the solubility and antibacterial ability of natural polysaccharides. Water-soluble derivatives of cellulose, chitin and chitosan offer the prospect of diverse applications in a wide range of fields, such as antibacterial products, drug delivery, wound healing, sewage treatment and ion exchange membranes. By combining the inherent properties of cellulose, chitin and chitosan with the inherent properties of the quaternary ammonium groups, new products with multiple functions and properties can be obtained. In this review, we summarized the research progress in the applications of quaternized cellulose, chitin and chitosan in recent five years. Moreover, ubiquitous challenges and personal perspectives on the further development of this promising field are also discussed.

Injectable self-healing chitosan-based POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogel as wound dressing to promote diabetic wound healing

Promoting the healing of diabetic wounds remains a major challenge in scientific research today. A star-like eight-arm cross-linker octafunctionalized POSS of benzaldehyde-terminated polyethylene glycol (POSS-PEG-CHO) was synthesized, and crosslinked with hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) via Schiff base reaction to obtain Chitosan-based POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogels. The designed composite hydrogels exhibited strong mechanical strength, injectability, excellent self-healing efficiency, good cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties. Furthermore, the composite hydrogels could accelerate cells migration and proliferation, as expected by remarkably promoting wound healing in diabetic mice. The wounds treated with the composite hydrogels displayed faster regeneration of epithelial tissue, fewer inflammatory cells, more collagen deposition and higher expression level of VEGF. Therefore, Chitosan-based POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogel has great application potential as a dressing for promoting the healing of diabetic wounds.

Potential nanotechnology-based diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for Meniere's disease

Meniere's disease (MD) is a progressive inner ear disorder involving recurrent and prolonged episodes or attacks of vertigo with associated symptoms, resulting in a significantly reduced quality of life for sufferers. In most cases, MD starts in one ear; however, in one-third of patients, the disorder progresses to the other ear. Unfortunately, the etiology of the disease is unknown, making the development of effective treatments difficult. Nanomaterials, including nanoparticles (NPs) and nanocarriers, offer an array of novel diagnostic and therapeutic applications related to MD. NPs have specific features such as biocompatibility, biochemical stability, targetability, and enhanced visualization using imaging tools. This paper provides a comprehensive and critical review of recent advancements in nanotechnology-based diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for MD. Furthermore, the crucial challenges adversely affecting the use of nanoparticles to treat middle ear disorders are investigated. Finally, this paper provides recommendations and future directions for improving the performances of nanomaterials on theragnostic applications of MD.

Investigation of biological effects of chitosan magnetic nano-composites hydrogel

The growing concern about microorganism infections, especially hospital-acquired infections, has driven the demand for effective and safe agents in recent years. Herein, novel nanocomposites were prepared based on layered double hydroxides (LDH NPs), Fe₂O₃nanoparticles (Fe₂O₃NPs), and chitosan hydrogel beads in different concentrations. The characteristics and composition of the prepared materials were investigated by various techniques such as XRD, FESEM, and FTIR. The results indicate that the nanocomposites are synthesized successfully, and each component is present in hydrogel matrixes. Then, their biomedical properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activity, were examined. Our findings demonstrate that the antimicrobial activity of nanocomposites significantly depends on the concentration of each component and their chemical groups. It shows itself in the result of the inhibitory zone of all bacteria or fungi samples. The obtained results indicate that the nanocomposite of Chitosan-hydrogel beads with 20% LDH and Fe₂O₃(CHB-LDH-Fe₂O₃%20) and Chitosan-hydrogel beads based on 20% LDH (CHB-LDH%20) showed excellent antibacterial and antifungal properties against all tested bacteria and fungi (P ≤ 0.01). In addition, the antioxidant effects of the synthesized materials (especially CHB-LDH Fe₂O₃%20 and CHB-LDH%20) were investigated, showing high antioxidant efficacy against DPPH free radicals (P ≤ 0.01). According to our findings, we can say that these materials are promising biomaterials for inhibiting some infectious bacteria and fungi.

Synthesis of magnetic/pH dual responsive dextran hydrogels as stimuli-sensitive drug carriers

Hydrogels loaded with magnetic nanoparticles have been widely researched recently as biomaterials, due to their good biocompatibility and unique magnetic characteristics. In this study, water-soluble superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄) prepared by coprecipitation were physically doped into the dextran hydrogels which were formed via Schiff base reactions between ethylenediamine and oxidized dextran. The combination of magnetic nanoparticles and chemical cross-linked hydrogels leads to magnetic/pH dual-sensitive hydrogels which can be used as stimuli-responsive carrier. Magnetic properties, swelling, and rheology behaviors of the resulted magnetic hydrogels were strongly affected by the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle content. Moreover, doxorubicin (DOX⋅HCl) was embedded into the magnetic hydrogels and pH/magnetic sensitive release profiles were identified. The release mechanism analysis indicated that the release behaviors of DOX⋅HCl were controlled by the diffusion, swelling, and erosion processes simultaneously. The prepared hydrogel/Fe₃O₄ composites with dual magnetic/pH stimuli-responsiveness hold the promise to be used in various applications such as drug release.

One-step preparation of hydrogel based on different molecular weights of chitosan with citric acid

BACKGROUND

Chitosan-based hydrogels have been prepared previously by a two-step protocol in which chitosan was first dissolved in dilute acetic acid and then crosslinked by glutaraldehyde or genipin. This was a time-consuming method, which had the disadvantages of high costs and biological safety problems.

RESULTS

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results verified the successful preparation of hydrogels based on high, medium, and low molecular-weight chitosan (HCS, MCS, and LCS), respectively. The hydrogels prepared with HCS, MCS, and LCS were formed through the accumulation of different-sized crystals. The framework density of the hydrogel was enhanced by an increase in the chitosan molecular weight and exhibited a crack pore pattern composed of flake particles. Medium molecular-weight chitosan-based hydrogel exhibited the highest specific surface area and total pore volume, with values of 3.81 m² g^-1 and 0.0109 cm³ g^-1 , respectively. The water absorption rate of the chitosan based hydrogels was influenced by its molecular weights at the sequence of LCS > HCS > MCS, while the maximum compression stress was affected at the sequence of HCS > MCS > LCS. The network structure was enhanced with an increase in the chitosan molecular weight and reached maximum stress levels of 4.50, 1.50 and 0.75 MPa for HCS-, MCS-, and LCS-based hydrogels, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Citric acid was shown to be an effective dissolving and crosslinking agent in the preparation of MCS- and HCS-based hydrogels. The physiochemical properties of the hydrogels were enhanced as the molecular weight of the chitosan increased. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Development of Carboxymethyl Chitosan Nanoparticles Prepared by Ultrasound-Assisted Technique for a Clindamycin HCl Carrier

Polymeric nanoparticles are one method to modify the drug release of small hydrophilic molecules. In this study, clindamycin HCl was used as a model drug loaded in carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles cross-linked with Ca2+ ions (CMCS-Ca2+). The ultrasonication with experimental design was used to produce CMCS-Ca2+ nanoparticles loading clindamycin HCl. The model showed that the size of nanoparticles decreased when amplitude and time increased. The nanoparticle size of 318.40 ± 7.56 nm, decreased significantly from 543.63 ± 55.07 nm (p < 0.05), was obtained from 75% of amplitude and 180 s of time, which was one of the optimal conditions. The clindamycin loading content in this condition was 34.68 ± 2.54%. The drug content in nanoparticles showed an inverse relationship with the size of the nanoparticles. The sodium carboxymethylcellulose film loading clindamycin HCl nanoparticles exhibited extended release with 69.88 ± 2.03% drug release at 60 min and a gradual increase to 94.99 ± 4.70% at 24 h, and demonstrated good antibacterial activity against S. aureus and C. acne with 40.72 ± 1.23 and 48.70 ± 1.99 mm of the zone of inhibition at 24 h, respectively. Thus, CMCS-Ca2+ nanoparticles produced by the ultrasound-assisted technique could be a potential delivery system to modify the drug release of small hydrophilic antibiotics.

Advances in Nanostructures for Antimicrobial Therapy

Microbial infections caused by a variety of drug-resistant microorganisms are more common, but there are fewer and fewer approved new antimicrobial chemotherapeutics for systemic administration capable of acting against these resistant infectious pathogens. Formulation innovations of existing drugs are gaining prominence, while the application of nanotechnologies is a useful alternative for improving/increasing the effect of existing antimicrobial drugs. Nanomaterials represent one of the possible strategies to address this unfortunate situation. This review aims to summarize the most current results of nanoformulations of antibiotics and antibacterial active nanomaterials. Nanoformulations of antimicrobial peptides, synergistic combinations of antimicrobial-active agents with nitric oxide donors or combinations of small organic molecules or polymers with metals, metal oxides or metalloids are discussed as well. The mechanisms of actions of selected nanoformulations, including systems with magnetic, photothermal or photodynamic effects, are briefly described.

NIR as a "trigger switch" for rapid phase change, on-demand release, and photothermal synergistic antibacterial treatment with chitosan-based temperature-sensitive hydrogel

Temperature-sensitive hydrogels have shown good performances as wound dressing owing to their ability to fill wounds in the liquid state and to release drugs in a solid state. However, their treatment efficiency is restricted by the phase transition time. In this study, we developed a photothermal synergistic chitosan-based temperature-sensitive hydrogel, h-EGF-CS/β-GP-MPDA@Cip, with the unique properties of rapid phase transition and drug release under near-infrared light (NIR). High antibacterial efficiency was achieved when we covered infected mice wounds with hydrogels. The local high temperature produced under NIR illumination not only accelerated the formation of a porous gel to release the loaded drug on-demand, but also dissolved bacteria, achieving synergistic anti-bacterial treatment. In addition, the healing cycle of wounds could be significantly shortened by adding human epidermal growth factor (h-EGF) in the hydrogel. Overall, the developed temperature-sensitive hydrogel could utilise NIR as a "trigger switch" for on-demand drug release and photothermal-enhanced antibacterial treatment during the rapid phase change process.

Exploiting the role of nanoparticles for use in hydrogel-based bioprinting applications: concept, design, and recent advances

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is an emerging tissue engineering approach that aims to develop cell or biomolecule-laden, complex polymeric scaffolds with high precision, using hydrogel-based "bioinks". Hydrogels are water-swollen, highly crosslinked polymer networks that are soft, quasi-solid, and can support and protect biological materials. However, traditional hydrogels have weak mechanical properties and cannot retain complex structures. They must be reinforced with physical and chemical manipulations to produce a mechanically resilient bioink. Over the past few years, we have witnessed an increased use of nanoparticles and biological moiety-functionalized nanoparticles to fabricate new bioinks. Nanoparticles of varied size, shape, and surface chemistries can provide a unique solution to this problem primarily because of three reasons: (a) nanoparticles can mechanically reinforce hydrogels through physical and chemical interactions. This can favorably influence the bioink's 3D printability and structural integrity by modulating its rheological, biomechanical, and biochemical properties, allowing greater flexibility to print a wide range of structures; (b) nanoparticles can introduce new bio-functionalities to the hydrogels, which is a key metric of a bioink's performance, influencing both cell-material and cell-cell interactions within the hydrogel; (c) nanoparticles can impart "smart" features to the bioink, making the tissue constructs responsive to external stimuli. Responsiveness of the hydrogel to magnetic field, electric field, pH changes, and near-infrared light can be made possible by the incorporation of nanoparticles. Additionally, bioink polymeric networks with nanoparticles can undergo advanced chemical crosslinking, allowing greater flexibility to print structures with varied biomechanical properties. Taken together, the unique properties of various nanoparticles can help bioprint intricate constructs, bringing the process one step closer to complex tissue structure and organ printing. In this review, we explore the design principles and multifunctional properties of various nanomaterials and nanocomposite hydrogels for potential, primarily extrusion-based bioprinting applications. We illustrate the significance of biocompatibility of the designed nanocomposite hydrogel-based bioink for clinical translation and discuss the different parameters that affect cell fate after cell-nanomaterial interaction. Finally, we critically assess the current challenges of nanoengineering bioinks and provide insight into the future directions of potential hydrogel bioinks in the rapidly evolving field of bioprinting.

Biomedical Applications of Quaternized Chitosan

The natural polymer chitosan is the second most abundant biopolymer on earth after chitin and has been extensively explored for preparation of versatile drug delivery systems. The presence of two distinct reactive functional groups (an amino group at C2, and a primary and secondary hydroxyl group at C3 and C6) of chitosan are involved in the transformation of expedient derivatives such as acylated, alkylated, carboxylated, quaternized and esterified chitosan. Amongst these, quaternized chitosan is preferred in pharmaceutical industries owing to its prominent features including superior water solubility, augmented antimicrobial actions, modified wound healing, pH-sensitive targeting, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. It has been explored in a large realm of pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and the biomedical arena. Immense classy drug delivery systems containing quaternized chitosan have been intended for tissue engineering, wound healing, gene, and vaccine delivery. This review article outlines synthetic techniques, basic characteristics, inherent properties, biomedical applications, and ubiquitous challenges associated to quaternized chitosan.

Multifunctional Hydrogel Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications

Hydrogels are used for various biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, capacity to mimic the extracellular matrix, and ability to encapsulate and deliver cells and therapeutics. However, traditional hydrogels have a few shortcomings, especially regarding their physical properties, thereby limiting their broad applicability. Recently, researchers have investigated the incorporation of nanoparticles (NPs) into hydrogels to improve and add to the physical and biochemical properties of hydrogels. This brief review focuses on papers that describe the use of nanoparticles to improve more than one property of hydrogels. Such multifunctional hydrogel nanocomposites have enhanced potential for various applications including tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, bioprinting, and biowearable devices.
