Abstract
Supercapacitors are the preferred option for supporting renewable energy sources owing to many benefits, including fast charging, long life, high energy and power density, and saving energy. While electrode materials with environmentally friendly preparation, high performance, and low cost are important research directions of supercapacitors. At present, the growing global population and the increasingly pressing issue of environmental pollution have drawn the focus of numerous researchers worldwide to the development and utilization of renewable biomass resources. Lignin, a renewable aromatic polymer, has reserves second only to cellulose in nature. Ten million tonnes of industrial lignin are produced in pulp and paper mills annually, most of which are disposed of as waste or burned for fuel, seriously depleting natural resources and polluting the environment. One practical strategy to accomplish sustainable development is to employ lignin resources to create high-value materials. Based on the high carbon content and rich functional groups of lignin, the lignin-based carbon materials generated after carbonization treatment display specific electrochemical properties as electrode materials. Nevertheless, low electrochemical activity of untreated lignin precludes it from achieving its full potential for application in energy storage. Heteroatom doping is a common modification method that aims to improve the electrochemical performance of the electrode materials by optimizing the structure of the lignin, improving its pore structure and increasing the number of active sites on its surface. This paper aims to establish theoretical foundations for design, preparation, and optimizing the performance of heteroatom-doped lignin-based carbon materials, as well as for developing high-value-added lignin materials. The most reported the mechanism of supercapacitors, the doping process involving various types of heteroatoms, and the analysis of how heteroatoms affect the performance of lignin-based carbon materials are also detailed in this review.

Abstract
The reserve of lignin in the biological world is the second largest biomass resource after cellulose. Lignin has the characteristics of wide sources, low cost, and rich active components. Due to environmental pollution and energy scarcity, lignin is often used as a substitute good for petrochemical products. Lignin-based functional materials can be prepared by chemical modification or compounding, which are widely used in the fields of energy storage, chemical industry, and medicine. Among them, lignin-based carbon materials have the features of stable chemical properties, large pH application range, ideal electrical conductivity, developed pore size, and high specific surface area, which have great application prospects as supercapacitor materials. This paper mainly introduces the structural properties of lignin, the methods, and mechanisms of carbonization, pore-making, and pore-expansion, as well as the research progress of lignin-based carbon materials for supercapacitors, while looking forward to the future research direction of lignin carbon materials.

Abstract
MOF-derived heteroatom-doped mesoporous carbons have gained the significant consideration in heterogenous catalytic reactions because of their multipurpose features. Especially, the high Specific Surface Area (SSA) of these materials provides abundant activated sites for the catalytic reactions, while the mesoporous structure allows for the effective mass transfer, enhancing the overall capability of the catalytic process. Herein, the efficient NiO/CN-T (T referred to the pyrolysis temperature) was prepared by facile pyrolysis of MOF/CS composite (Ni-MOF (74), Chitosan) in the presence of excess amount of starch as the carbon precursor. The NiO/CN-T as heterogenous catalyst has desired SSA varied from 1094 to 491 m2.g-1. The optimized catalyst (NiO/CN-600) possesses the superior catalytic activity toward the oxidation of the BnOHs due to its high SSA (1094 m2.g-1), which can notably rectify the mass transfer proficiency. Additionally, the NiO/CN-600 heterogenous catalyst also represents the acceptable chemical stability. So, it was demonstrated that such an innovative strategy can provide several versatile tunability insights for the preparation of MOF/biopolymer-derived heterogenous catalysts.

Abstract
The rational design of porous carbon materials and hydrogel electrolytes with excellent mechanical properties and low-temperature tolerance are significance for the development of flexible solid-state supercapacitors. In this study, we introduce a novel methodology for synthesizing SiC/N, S-doped porous carbon nanosheets from bamboo pulp red liquor (RL). We leverage the SiO2 and the sodium salt in RL as templates and sodium lignosulfonate as sulfur dopants for the pyrolysis process and use NH4Cl as a nitrogen dopant. This innovative approach results in a material with a remarkable specific surface area of 1659.19 m2 g-1, a specific capacitance of 308 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and excellent stability. Additionally, we harness alkali lignin extracted from RL to enhance a poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix, creating a gel electrolyte with low-temperature tolerance and outstanding mechanical properties. A flexible solid-state supercapacitor, which incorporates our electrodes and gel electrolyte, demonstrates high energy density (5.2 W h kg-1 at 251 W kg-1 power density). Impressively, it maintains 82 % of its capacitance over 10,000 cycles of charge and discharge. This provides a new solution for the development of flexible solid-state supercapacitors.

Recently, with the pursuit of high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) and electrochemical energy storage (EES) materials, multifunctional lignin-based composites have attracted significant interest due to their low cost, vast availability, and sustainability. In this work, lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) was first prepared by electrospinning, pre-oxidation and carbonization processes. Then, different content of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of LCNFs via the facile hydrothermal way to produce a series of bifunctional wolfsbane-like LCNFs/Fe3O4 composites. Among them, the synthesized optimal sample (using 12 mmol of FeCl3·6H2O named as LCNFs/Fe3O4-2) displayed excellent EMWA ability. When the minimum reflection loss (RL) value achieved -44.98 dB at 6.01 GHz with an thickness of 1.5 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was up to 4.19 GHz ranging from 5.10 to 7.21 GHz. For supercapacitor electrode, the highest specific capacitance of LCNFs/Fe3O4-2 reached 538.7 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g, and the capacitance retention remained at 80.3 %. Moreover, an electric double layer capacitor of LCNFs/Fe3O4-2//LCNFs/Fe3O4-2 also showed a remarkable power density of 7755.29 W/kg, outstanding energy density of 36.62 Wh/kg and high cycle stability (96.89 % after 5000 cycles). In short, the construction of this multifunctional lignin-based composites has potential applications in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers and supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract
Recently, multifunctional lignin-based materials are gaining more and more attention due to their great potential for low-cost and sustainability. In this work, to obtain both an excellent supercapacitor electrode and an outstanding electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber, a series of multifunctional nitrogen-sulphur (N-S) co-doped lignin-based carbon magnetic nanoparticles (LCMNPs) had been successfully prepared through Mannich reaction at different carbonization temperature. As compared with the directly carbonized lignin carbon (LC), LCMNPs had more nano-size structure and higher specific surface area. Meanwhile, with the increase of carbonization temperature, the graphitization of the LCMNPs could also be effectively improved. Therefore, LCMNPs-800 displayed the best performance advantages. For the electric double layer capacitor (EDLC), the optimal specific capacitance of LCMNPs-800 reached 154.2 F/g, and the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles was as high as 98.14 %. When the power density was 2204.76 W/kg, the energy density achieved 33.81 Wh/kg. In addition, N-S co-doped LCMNPs also exhibited strong electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) ability, whose the minimum reflection loss (RL) value of LCMNPs-800 was realized -46.61 dB at 6.01 GHz with an thickness of 4.0 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was up to 2.11 GHz ranging from 5.10 to 7.21 GHz, which could cover the C-band. Overall, this green and sustainable approach is a promising strategy for the preparation of high-performance multifunctional lignin-based materials.

Abstract
P25/PBP (TiO2, anthocyanins) prepared by combining PBP (blueberry peels) with P25, and N-doped porous carbon-supported Ni nanoparticles (Ni@NPC-X) prepared using blueberry-derived carbon were used for the application as photoanode and the counter electrode, respectively, in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to create a new perspective for blueberry-based photo-powered energy systems. PBP was introduced into the P25 photoanode and carbonized to form a C-like structure after annealing that improved its adsorption capacity for N719 dye, contributing a 17.3% higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of P25/PBP-Pt (5.82%) than that of P25-Pt (4.96%). The structure of the porous carbon changes from a flat surface to a petal-like structure due to the N doping by melamine, and the specific surface area increases. N-doped three-dimensional porous carbon supported the loading and reduced the agglomeration of Ni nanoparticles, reducing the charge transfer resistance, and providing a fast electron transfer path. The doping of Ni and N on the porous carbon worked synergistically to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of the Ni@NPC-X electrode. The PCE of the DSSCs assembled by Ni@NPC-1.5 and P25/PBP was 4.86%. Also, the Ni@NPC-1.5 electrode exhibited 116.12 F g-1 and a capacitance retention rate of 98.2% (10 000 cycles), further confirming good electrocatalysis and cycle stability.

Abstract
Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials show promise for use as supercapacitor electrodes, but the tradeoff between surface area and the heteroatom dopant levels limits the supercapacitive performance. Here, we modulated the pore structure and surface dopants of N, S co-doped hierarchical porous lignin-derived carbon (NS-HPLC-K) via self-assembly assisted template-coupled activation. The ingenious assembly of lignin micelles and sulfomethylated melamine into a magnesium carbonate basic template greatly promoted the KOH activation process, which endowed the NS-HPLC-K with uniform distributions of activated N/S dopants and highly accessible nanosized pores. The optimized NS-HPLC-K exhibited a three-dimensional hierarchically porous architecture composed of wrinkled nanosheets and a high specific surface area of 2538.3 ± 9.5 m2/g with a rational N content of 3.19 ± 0.01 at.%, which boosted the electrical double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance. Consequently, the NS-HPLC-K supercapacitor electrode delivered a superior gravimetric capacitance of 393 F/g at 0.5 A/g. Furthermore, the assembled coin-type supercapacitor showed good energy-power characteristics and cycling stability. This work provides a novel idea for designing eco-friendly porous carbons for use in advanced supercapacitors.

Abstract
Novel amine functionalized materials can capture greenhouse gas CO2. In this study, SiO2-Al2O3-ZrO2 ternary composite aerogel was prepared by sol-gel method, supercritical drying, ultrasonic non-in-situ synthesis and other processes using aluminum chloride hexahydrate as aluminum source, ethyl orthosilicate as silicon source and tetrabbutyl zirconate as zirconium source. The composite material was used as the carrier material. By impregnation method, the modified agent bis - (3-trimethoxy-silpropyl) amine and the composite were fully mixed and modified, and the novel zeolite doped amine functionalized ternary composite aerogel was obtained by doping acidification activation zeolite. The results show that the prepared novel zeolite amine-modified ternary aerogels have rich microporous structure and ordered mesoporous structure. After loading different contents of amine-based materials (CAA-X) in the ternary aerogels, the comparison between CAAZ-X and zeolite amine-modified ternary aerogels is conducted. Zeolite doped CAAZ-30 material shows the best adsorption performance, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 5.30 mmol/g. In the presence of water vapor, CAAZ-30 material also showed the best adsorption performance, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 5.33 mmol/g. This can help us design suitable adsorbent materials for CO2 capture in different practical applications.

Abstract
Lignin, one of the components of natural plant biomass, is a rich source of carbon and has excellent potential as a valuable, sustainable source of carbon material. Low-cost lignosulfonate (LS) doped with polyaniline (PANI) has been used as a precursor to produce porous carbon. LS has a highly dispersed and sparse microstructure and can be accidentally doped with S atoms. N and S double-doped carbon can be directly synthesized with abundant mesopores and high surface area in a lamellar network using PANI as another doping source. This study explored the optimal conditions of LS/PANI material with different amounts of lignosulfonate and different carbonization temperatures. When the amount of lignosulfonate was 4 g and the carbonization temperature was 700 °C, graded porous carbon was obtained, and the electrochemical performance was the best. At 0.5 A/g, the specific capacitance reached 333.50 F/g (three-electrode system) and 242.20 F/g (two-electrode system). After 5000 charge/discharge cycles at 5 A/g, the material maintained good cycling stability and achieved a capacitance retention rate of 95.14% (three-electrode system) and 97.04% (two-electrode system). The energy and power densities of the SNC700 samples were 8.33 Wh/kg and 62.5 W/kg at 0.25 A/g, respectively, values that meet the requirements of today's commercially available supercapacitor electrode materials, further demonstrating their good practicality. This paper provides an efficient double-doping method to prepare layered structures. Porous carbon is used for electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract
Zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs) are regarded as a potential candidate for large-scale energy storage devices. However, the inadequate cathode and the inferior wettability between the electrode and electrolyte hinder the construction of high-performance ZIHCs. Herein, boron (B) and sulfur (S) co-doped spongy-like hierarchically porous carbon (B2S3C) is first proposed as a cathode material for ZIHCs. Here, B doping is favorable for improving the wettability, while S doping contributes to enhancing the electrical properties. In addition, the density functional theory (DFT) results uncover that B and S atoms contribute to reducing the energy barrier between Zn2+ and the cathode, leading to boosted chemical adsorption ability of Zn2+ on the cathode. As a result, the assembled ZIHC based on B2S3C exhibits a high specific capacity of 182.6 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, an excellent capacity retention of 96.2% after 10 000 cycles and a remarkable energy density of 292.2 W h kg-1 at a power density of 62.2 W kg-1, superior to the previously reported ZIHCs. Due to the flexibility of the assembled electrodes, the solid-state ZIHC can sustain various deformations. This work paves a feasible path for the development of cost-effective and high-performance porous carbon materials.

Abstract
The specification of the local structure and clarification of interfacial interactions of biomass composites is of tremendous significance in synthesizing novel materials and advancing their performance in various demanding applications. However, it remains challenging due to the limitations of experimental techniques, particularly for the manner that biomass composites commonly have hydrogen bonds involved in the vicinity of active sites and interfaces. Herein, the cellulose/Mg(OH)2 nanocomposite has been synthesized via a simple hydrothermal approach and examined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The composite exhibits a layered morphology; Mg(OH)2 flakes are around 50 nm in size and well-dispersed. They either anchor onto the cellulose surface or intercalate between layers. The specific composite structure was confirmed theoretically, in line with XRD, SEM and TEM observations. The interfacial interactions were found to be hydrogen bonding. The average adsorption energy per hydroxyl group was computed to be within -0.47 and -0.26 eV for a composite model comprising three cellulose chains and a two-layered Mg(OH)2 cluster. The combined computational/experimental results allow to postulate the antibacterial mechanism of the nanocomposite.

Abstract
Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NH4H2PO4) was used as an activator and co-dopant to induce the synthesis of N, P co-doped porous carbon nanosheets (NPCNs) from pomelo peel for using as high-performance supercapacitors. Pomelo peel has a unique sponge-like structure in which NH4H2PO4 particles can be evenly embedded. The pore structure and heteroatomic doping amount of NPCNs were controlled by adjusting the pyrolysis temperature. As a result, the optimal sample exhibits high specific capacitance (314 ± 2.6 F g-1) and rate capability (82% of capacitance retention at 20 A g-1). NPCNs-750 was further employed in a symmetrical supercapacitor (NPCNs-750//NPCNs-750 SSC) with 2 M Li2SO4 electrolyte, and exhibits a high energy density of 36 ± 1.5 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1000 W kg-1, with excellent cycling stability with 99% retention after 10,000 cycles. A series of excellent results show that this pollution-free and cost-effective method can be used for the design and preparation of high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.

Abstract
Lignin is recommended to a tempting alternative precursor of petroleum for fabricating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) due to its high carbon content, low-cost and renewable resources. However, the property of lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) is inferior owing to the heterogeneity and 3D-network structure of lignin, which hinders its application in supercapacitors. The latest developments in fractionation technology have shown great potential for overcoming the aforementioned shortcomings. However, most of fractionation methods mainly rely on expensive chemicals and complex reaction process, such as enzymes, multiple solvents, membranes, and dialysis tubes. Herein, we proposed a controllable and effective strategy to fractionate lignin by only changing the ratio of ethanol/water (V/V) as mixture solvent. This gradient extraction method effectively removed the part of lignin with small molecular and branching structure, thus selectively getting the fractionated lignin with high molecular weight, narrow polydispersity index, and good linear structure. Fortunately, when the ratio of ethanol/water was 6:4, the corresponding LCNFs (LCNFs-L60) was obtained with large specific surface area, independent filamentous morphology networks and excellent electrochemical property. Its specific capacitance was up to 405.8 F/g. This way features controllable and sustainable for preparing high-quality LCNFs supercapacitors.

Abstract
To convert lignin into high-valued carbon materials and understand the lignin structure function, oxidized lignin, a by-product from lignocellulose PHP-pretreatment (phosphoric acid plus hydrogen peroxide), was carbonized by one-step KOH-activation; the physico-chemical characteristics and electrochemical performances of the harvested carbons were also investigated. Results indicated the resultant carbons displayed 3-dimensional hierarchical porous morphology with maximum specific surface area of 3094 m2 g-1 and pore volume of 1.72 cm3 g-1 using 3:1 KOH/lignin ratio for carbonization. Three-electrode determination achieved a specific capacitance of 352.9 F g-1 at a current of 0.5 A g-1, suggesting a superior rate performance of this carbon. Two-electrode determination obtained an excellent energy density of 9.5 W h kg-1 at power density of 25.0 W kg-1. Moreover, 5000 cycles of charge/discharge reached 88.46% retention at 5 A g-1, implying an outstanding cycle stability. Basically, low molecular weight and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups of employed lignin mainly related to the excellent porous morphology and the outstanding electrochemical performances, suggesting the oxidized lignin was an ideal precursor to facilely prepare activated carbon for high-performance supercapacitor. Overall, this work provides a new path to valorize lignin by-product derived from oxidative pretreatment techniques, which can further promote the integrality of lignocellulose biorefinery.

Abstract
Iron and nitrogen-doped carbon substances with abundant active sites that related to dispersion of heteroatom species (Fe and N) on the surface of carbonous structure, are promising choice for eco-friendly catalytic reactions. Herein, cellulose-based ionic liquid (IL) derivative not only employed as the both nitrogen and iron heteroatom precursors, but also has been used as the green and biodegradable substrate. The non-noble Fe-NC@550, was successfully fabricated by convenient carbonization of cellulose-based IL. Further, the FeCl4- anion was used as the iron precursor and also it has been applied to elevate the SSA (specific surface area) of catalyst (from 40.96 to 160.42 m2/g) due to the presence of chlorine. On the basis of several pertinent physicochemical and experimental outcomes, the structure of the catalyst was successfully proved in different synthetic steps. As expected, the Fe-NC@550 exhibited the substantial efficiency toward hydrogenation of nitroarenes with high TOF value and also remarkable reusability.
