Abstract
With increasing awareness on environmental protection and food safety, the development of biodegradable antimicrobial packaging materials has been paid growing emphasis. In this work, starch/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/ε-polylysine hydrochloride films were prepared by extrusion blowing, and five commercial organically modified nanomontmorillonites (OMMT, including DK1, DK2, DK3, DK4, and DK5) were used as reinforcing agents. Intercalated structures were formed in the nanocomposite films, especially for those with DK3 and DK4 owing to their higher hydrophobicity and larger interlayer spacing. Adding OMMT weakened hydrogen bonds and the gelatinization/plasticization degree of starch. Morphology analysis revealed that the agglomeration of OMMT occurred in the films, but the film containing DK3 still showed a relatively homogeneous microstructure. Loading OMMT enhanced the strength, deformation resistance, thermal stability, surface hydrophobicity, but decreased barrier properties and water sensitivity of the films. Antimicrobial activity showed that the OMMT and ε-polylysine hydrochloride possessed a synergistic effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The maximum inhibition rate was observed in that with DK4, approaching 100 %. Findings supported the application of commercial OMMT in manufacturing biodegradable antimicrobial blown films.

Abstract
Robust biopolymer-based composite film with multifunctional performances significantly contributes to the packaging field. Herein, we proposed a sort of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based composite film via incorporating versatile zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) materials. Compared to pristine CMC film, the OTR, WVTR, and tensile strength of CMC/ZIF composite film with 1 wt ‰ Zn/Co-ZIF were improved from 64.89 cm3*μm/(m2*d*kPa), 1579.21 g/(m2*24h) and 16.9 MPa to 20.79 cm3*μm/(m2*d*kPa), 1209.58 g/(m2*24h) and 70.1 MPa, respectively. Notably, owing to the reduced band gap and intrinsic chemical and thermal stability of Zn/Co-ZIF, the fabricated Zn/Co-ZIF/CMC composite film presented well UV protection capability within the whole UV region and excellent UV-blocking durability after being exposed to UV-light at 365 nm for 12 h. In practice, the photocatalytic degradation of RhB solutions under UV light could be effectively suppressed when using Zn/Co-ZIF/CMC film as UV protection layer. Our findings proposed the potential application of these versatile ZIF materials as functional nanofiller within biopolymer substances for UV protection and transparent packaging area.

A Review on Antimicrobial Packaging for Extending the Shelf Life of Food. Processes (Basel) 2023. Abstract
Food packaging systems are continually impacted by the growing demand for minimally processed foods, changing eating habits, and food safety risks. Minimally processed foods are prone to the growth of harmful microbes, compromising quality and safety. As a result, the need for improved food shelf life and protection against foodborne diseases alongside consumer preference for minimally processed foods with no or lesser synthetic additives foster the development of innovative technologies such as antimicrobial packaging. It is a form of active packaging that can release antimicrobial substances to suppress the activities of specific microorganisms, thereby improving food quality and safety during long-term storage. However, antimicrobial packaging continues to be a very challenging technology. This study highlights antimicrobial packaging concepts, providing different antimicrobial substances used in food packaging. We review various types of antimicrobial systems. Emphasis is given to the effectiveness of antimicrobial packaging in various food applications, including fresh and minimally processed fruit and vegetables and meat and dairy products. For the development of antimicrobial packaging, several approaches have been used, including the use of antimicrobial sachets inside packaging, packaging films, and coatings incorporating active antimicrobial agents. Due to their antimicrobial activity and capacity to extend food shelf life, regulate or inhibit the growth of microorganisms and ultimately reduce the potential risk of health hazards, natural antimicrobial agents are gaining significant importance and attention in developing antimicrobial packaging systems. Selecting the best antimicrobial packaging system for a particular product depends on its nature, desired shelf life, storage requirements, and legal considerations. The current review is expected to contribute to research on the potential of antimicrobial packaging to extend the shelf life of food and also serves as a good reference for food innovation information.

Abstract
In this study, the antioxidant, antimicrobial, mechanical, optical, and barrier attributes of Solanum lycocarpum starch bio-based edible films incorporated with a phenolic extract from jaboticaba peel were investigated. Aiming to determine the effect of the polymers and the phenolic extract on the properties of the films, a three-factor simplex-lattice design was employed, and the formulation optimization was based on the produced films' antioxidant potential. The optimized formulation of the starch-PEJP film showed a reddish-pink color with no cracks or bubbles and 91% antioxidant activity against DPPH radical. The optimized starch-PEJP film showed good transparency properties and a potent UV-blocking action, presenting color variation as a function of the pH values. The optimized film was also considerably resistant and highly flexible, showing a water vapor permeability of 3.28 × 10-6 g m-1 h-1 Pa-1. The microbial permeation test and antimicrobial evaluation demonstrated that the optimized starch-PEJP film avoided microbial contamination and was potent in reducing the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella spp. In summary, the active starch-PEJP film showed great potential as an environmentally friendly and halochromic material, presenting antioxidant and antimicrobial properties and high UV-protecting activity.

Abstract
Food packaging is an important concept for consumer satisfaction and the increased shelf life of food products. The introduction of novel food packaging materials has become an emerging trend in recent years, which could be mainly due to environmental pollution caused by plastic packaging and to reduce food waste. Recently, numerous studies have been carried out on nanoclays or nanolayered silicate to be used in packaging material development as reinforcing filler composites. Different types of nanoclays have been used as food packaging materials, while montmorillonite (MMT), halloysite, bentonite (BT), Cloisite, and organically modified nanoclays have become of great interest. The incorporation of nanoclays into the packaging matrix improves the mechanical and barrier properties and at the same time prolongs the biodegradation of the packaging material. The purpose of this article is to examine the development of nanoclay-based food packaging materials. The review article highlights the current state of research on bio-based polymers with nanoclay for food packaging. In addition, the report analyses the mechanical, barrier, and antibacterial characteristics of nanoclay-based food packaging materials. Finally, it discusses the migration of nanoclays, toxicity levels, and the legislation associated with the application of nanoclays. Graphical abstract

Abstract
Research on the utilization of food waste and by-products, such as peels, pomace, and seeds has increased in recent years. The high number of valuable compounds, such as starch, protein, and bioactive materials in waste and by-products from food manufacturing industries creates opportunities for the food packaging industry. These opportunities include the development of biodegradable plastics, functional compounds, active and intelligent packaging materials. However, the practicality, adaptability and relevance of up-scaling this lab-based research into an industrial scale are yet to be thoroughly examined. Therefore, in this review, recent research on the development of active and intelligent packaging materials, their applications on seafood and meat products, consumer acceptance, and recommendations to improve commercialization of these products were critically overviewed. This work addresses the challenges and potential in commercializing food waste and by-products for the food packaging industry. This information could be used as a guide for research on reducing food loss and waste while satisfying industrial demands.

Abstract
Polysaccharides constitute one of the most important families of biopolymers. Natural polysaccharide-based drug delivery systems are of constant interest to the scientific community due to their unique properties: biocompatibility, non-toxicity, biodegradability, and high availability. These promising biomaterials protect sensitive active agents and provide their controlled release in targeted sites. The application of natural polysaccharides as drug delivery systems is also intensively developed by Polish scientists. The present review focuses on case studies from the last few years authored or co-authored by research centers in Poland. A particular emphasis was placed on the diversity of the formulations in terms of the active substance carried, the drug delivery route, the composition of the material, and its preparation method.

Abstract
In the present study, the roots of valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.) and lovage (Levisticum officinale Koch.) from the organic and low-input conventional cultivation systems were subjected to the analysis of selected groups of phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids) and antioxidant activity. Plants were grown in two consecutive vegetation seasons in the experimental plots located in western Poland. Phenolic acids and flavonoids were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC/UV–Vis), while the antioxidant activity of the samples was measured with the use of DPPH radical scavenging activity assay. The concentrations of phenolic acids (sum) and flavonoids (sum) were found to be higher in the conventional lovage roots, as compared to the organically grown lovage roots, while in the case of valerian, no significant effects of the cultivation system on the levels of the sums of these analyzed compounds were found. Furthermore, no significant effect of the cultivation system on the antioxidant activity of herbs was observed. Additional efforts could be invested in enhancing the potential of organic medicinal plants to consistently present the expected high concentrations of health-promoting antioxidants, which could be effectively brought through their post-harvest handling, storage and processing, and thus meet consumers’ expectations at the stage when they reach the market.

Abstract
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)/losartan potassium (LOS-K) was used as a model drug to prepare compound tablets through the investigation of the compression and mechanical properties of mixed powders to determine the formulation and preparation factors, followed by D-optimal mixture experimental design to optimize the final parameters. The type and amount of lactose monohydrate (SuperTab®14SD, 19.53−26.91%), microcrystalline cellulose (MCC PH102, 32.86−43.31%), pre-gelatinized starch (Starch-1500, 10.96−15.91%), and magnesium stearate (0.7%) were determined according to the compressive work, stress relaxation curves, and Py value. Then, the compression mechanism of the mixed powder was investigated by the Kawakita equation, Shapiro equation, and Heckel analysis, and the mixed powder was classified as a Class-II powder. The compaction pressure (150−300 MPa) and tableting speed (1200−2400 Tab/h) were recommended. A D-optimal mixture experimental design was utilized to select the optimal formulation (No 1, 26.027% lactose monohydrate, 32.811% MCC PH102, and 15.462% pregelatinized starch) according to the drug dissolution rate, using Hyzaar® tablets as a control. Following oral administration in beagle dogs, there were no significant differences in bioavailability between the No. 1 tablet and the Hyzaar® tablet in HCTZ, losartan carboxylic acid (E-3174), and LOS-K (F < F0.05). Thus, formulation and preparation factors were determined according to the combination of the compression and mechanical properties of the mixed powder and quality of tablets, which was demonstrated to be a feasible method in direct powder compression.

Abstract
Innovations and research on packaging materials are in a fast-growing stage to make them suitable for advanced packaging innovations and sustainability efforts. Biological macromolecules like algal polysaccharides, chitosan, gelatin and others like starch are explored for developing eco-friendly packaging alternatives. Compared to conventional synthetic polymers they have performance limitations that are tried to be overcome with added fillers. The unique properties of fillers in the nano range are explored for this. They can improve the overall property of polymer matrixes by improving barrier properties to oxygen and water vapour, increasing stability and mechanical strength. Exploring the possibilities of new nanoparticle-polymer combinations can bring novel properties in the packaging industry that can be used in smart and intelligent packaging areas. Thus studies on nanocomposite films from polysaccharides, protein compounds and nanoparticles can help to overcome the limitations of bio-polymers for novel packaging applications. This review covers the effect of nanoparticles on the optical, morphological, barrier, thermal and mechanical properties of polysaccharides and proteins based packaging film, along with the types of nanoparticles used in the composite films.

Abstract
The antibacterial and antifungal effects of six plant-derived essential oils (EOs) and two types of citrus extracts (CEs) were studied against two pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella Typhimurium and Escherichia coli O157:H7) and three fungi (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum, and Mucor circinelloides). A broth microdilution assay and checkerboard method were used to measure the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of each extract and the possible interactions between them. The MIC assay showed that cinnamon EO, Mediterranean EO, Southern formulation, citrus EO, organic citrus extract (OCE), and natural citrus extract (NCE) had the highest antimicrobial and antifungal activity. The checkerboard method showed that the Mediterranean EO+OCE combination acted in synergy against all tested pathogens. A centroid mixture design was used to develop active formulations by predicting optimal concentrations of EO/CEs for increased antibacterial/antifungal activity. A mixture of four formulations (625 ppm OCE, 313 ppm Mediterranean EO, 625 ppm citrus EO, and 313 ppm cinnamon EO) named as active formulation 1, and the mixture from five formulations (625 ppm NCE, 625 ppm Asian formulation, 313 ppm Southern formulation, 625 ppm cinnamon EO, and 313 ppm savory thyme EO) named as active formulation 2, were formulated and tested because of their high microbicidal effectiveness. In situ tests with rice showed a significant reduction (P ≤ 0.05) of all tested pathogenic bacteria and fungi from the vapor of active formulations 1 and 2 after 28 days of storage. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Active formulations (essential oils and citrus extracts) developed in the study are highly effective against foodborne pathogens. Active formulations in this study could be used as natural preservatives in the food industry for controlling foodborne diseases and spoilage organisms in stored foods.

Abstract
Migration of additives is an important issue for proper application in food packaging. In this work, propionylated waxy and normal starch-based nanocomposites (PW-N and PN-N) with two different amylopectin content were immersed in distilled water, and structural changes and migration mechanism of plasticizer (triacetin) were discussed in detail. Results showed that when immersion time was prolonged to 150 h, small crystals of PN-N disappeared, and amorphous structures formed gradually in PW-N and PN-N. Exfoliated structures still remained in PW-N with prolonged immersion time, while exfoliated structures gradually formed from intercalated ones in PN-N, and the peak representing d001 (d-spacing) at q = 1.70 nm-1 faded. The migration mechanism of triacetin obeyed the first-order kinetic model and Fick's law; furthermore, in comparison with PW-N, PN-N showed a larger diffusion coefficient (D2 = 12.13 μm2·h-1). These results contributed to expanding the application of starch-based nanocomposites in future environmentally friendly food packaging.

Abstract
Poor aqueous solubility of eplerenone (EPL) is a major obstacle to achieve sufficient bioavailability after oral administration. In this study, we aimed to develop and evaluate eplerenone nanocrystals (EPL-NCs) for solubility and dissolution enhancement. D-optimal combined mixture process using Design-Expert software was employed to generate different combinations for optimization. EPL-NCs were prepared by a bottom-up, controlled crystallization technique during freeze-drying. The optimized EPL-NCs were evaluated for their size, morphology, thermal behavior, crystalline structure, saturation solubility, dissolution profile, in vivo pharmacokinetics, and acute toxicity. The optimized EPL-NCs showed mean particle size of 46.8 nm. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of elongated parallelepiped shaped NCs. DSC and PXRD analysis confirmed the crystalline structure and the absence of any polymorphic transition in EPL-NCs. Furthermore, EPL-NCs demonstrated a 17-fold prompt increase in the saturation solubility of EPL (8.96 vs. 155.85 µg/mL). The dissolution rate was also significantly higher as indicated by ∼95% dissolution from EPL-NCs in 10 min compared to only 29% from EPL powder. EPL-NCs improved the oral bioavailability as indicated by higher AUC, Cmax, and lower Tmax than EPL powder. Acute oral toxicity study showed that EPL-NCs do not pose any toxicity concern to the blood and vital organs. Consequently, NCs prepared by controlled crystallization technique present a promising strategy to improve solubility profile, dissolution velocity and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs.

Abstract
In the present review, we aimed to summarize the effect of soy isoflavones plus soy protein on circulating interlukin-6 (IL-6) in adult participants. Databases including ISI Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and clinicaltrials.gov were searched up to 23 March 2020. The mean change from baseline of IL-6 concentrations and its SD for intervention and comparison groups were used to calculate the effect size. If the heterogeneity test was statistically significant, DerSimonian and Laird random effects model was used. Cochran's Q test and I-squared statistic were also used to compute the statistical heterogeneity of the intervention's effects. Eighteen studies were known to be eligible for systematic review and 14 studies were selected for meta-analysis. Our meta-analysis results indicated a non-significant effect in serum IL-6 concentrations compared to the comparison group (WMD = 0.03 pg/ml, 95% CI: -0.06, 0.12; p = .459). In subgroup analysis, based on soy isoflavones dosage, it was observed that this combination could reduce IL-6 levels in studies that used isoflavones with dose >84 mg/day (WMD = -0.12 pg/ml 95% CI: -0.24, -0.004; p = .042, I2 = 82.7%) and in articles with a good quality (WMD = -0.15 pg/ml 95% CI: -0.24, -0.05; p = .003, I2 = 62.3%). Performing well-designed intervention studies using a high dose of soy isoflavones is recommended to confirm the beneficial effects of soy ingredients on IL-6.

Abstract
The application of nanotechnology in food packaging is widely considered during the last two decades. In this regard, numerous studies have been conducted regarding applying nanomaterials such as zinc oxide, clay, silver, carbon nanotube, titanium dioxide, and copper, and copper oxide in food packaging which were summarized in the current study. The employing of nano food packaging increases the physicochemical quality of food (color, flavor, moisture content, weight, bioavailability, and texture) and reduces the microbial load by cell-membrane function, Trojan-horse, and reactive oxygen mechanisms while they improve the barrier/mechanical properties of food packaging. Although nano food packaging has many advantages for public health, the associated toxicity due to migration, especially in acidic conditions, is considerable. Further studies regarding the advantages and disadvantages of this technique are recommended.
