Natural Polysaccharide-Based Hydrogels Used for Dye Removal

Removal of contaminants from discharge water is vital and demands urgent assistance with the goal to keep clean water. Adsorption is one of the most common, efficient, and low-priced methods used in water treatment. Various polysaccharide-based gels have been used as efficient dye adsorbents from wastewater. This review summarizes cutting-edge research of the last decade of different hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides (chitin, chitosan, cellulose, starch, pullulan, and dextran) concerning their dye adsorption efficiency. Beyond their natural abundance, attributes of polysaccharides such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cost make them not only efficient, but also environmentally sustainable candidates for water purification. The synthesis and dye removal performance together with the effect of diverse factors on gels retaining ability, kinetic, and isotherm models encountered in adsorption studies, are introduced. Thermodynamic parameters, sorbent recycling capacity along with conclusions and future prospects are also presented.

Electrospinning and electrospun polysaccharide-based nanofiber membranes: A review

The electrospinning technology has set off a tide and given rise to the attention of a widespread range of research territories, benefiting from the enhancement of nanofibers which made a spurt of progress. Nanofibers, continuously produced via electrospinning technology, have greater specific surface area and higher porosity and play a non-substitutable key role in many fields. Combined with the degradability and compatibility of the natural structure characteristics of polysaccharides, electrospun polysaccharide nanofiber membranes gradually infiltrate into the life field to help filter air contamination particles and water pollutants, treat wounds, keep food fresh, monitor electronic equipment, etc., thus improving the life quality. Compared with the evaluation of polysaccharide-based nanofiber membranes in a specific field, this paper comprehensively summarized the existing electrospinning technology and focused on the latest research progress about the application of polysaccharide-based nanofiber in different fields, represented by starch, chitosan, and cellulose. Finally, the benefits and defects of electrospun are discussed in brief, and the prospects for broadening the application of polysaccharide nanofiber membranes are presented for the glorious expectation dedicated to the progress of the eras.

Zingiber officinale and thymus vulgaris extracts co-loaded polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan electrospun nanofibers for tackling infection and wound healing promotion

Infections are severe complications associated with chronic wounds and tardy healing that should be timely treated to achieve rapid and proper tissue repair. To hinder such difficulties, a nanofibrous mat composed of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan (PVA/CS) was developed by electrospinning method, containing thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) extracts. The mat containing 10 wt% of the extracts (at the ratio of 50:50) exposed the nanofibers (NFs) with the nanoscale diameter (average 382 ± 60 nm), smooth surface, and defect-free morphology. Likewise, the relevant analyses of the loaded mat displayed high wettability, porosity, and liquid absorption capacity without any adverse interaction. The obtained mat also provided a high antioxidant activity, and its release profile was continuous and sustained for nearly 72 h. Besides, it inhibited the growth of both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli strains. Furthermore, the proposed mat significantly accelerated cutaneous wound healing in bacterial-infected rats by preventing bacteria growth at the wound site. At last, histopathology analysis confirmed the ample regeneration of skin structures, forming collagen fibers and appendages. Overall, the proposed mat containing ginger-thyme extracts provides multiple therapeutic capabilities with promising solutions for inhibiting wound infection and accelerating the healing process.

Electrospun Materials Based on Polymer and Biopolymer Blends—A Review

This review covers recent developments and progress in polymer and biopolymer blending and material preparation by electrospinning. Electrospinning is a technique that is used to produce nanofibers to improve the quality of membranes. Electrospun nanofibers are highly applicable in biomedical sciences, supercapacitors, and in water treatment following metal ion adsorption. The key affecting factors of electrospinning have been checked in the literature to obtain optimal conditions of the electrospinning process. Future research directions and outlooks have been suggested to think about innovative ideas for research in this field.

Polymer Gels: Classification and Recent Developments in Biomedical Applications

Polymer gels are a valuable class of polymeric materials that have recently attracted significant interest due to the exceptional properties such as versatility, soft-structure, flexibility and stimuli-responsive, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Based on their properties, polymer gels can be used in a wide range of applications: food industry, agriculture, biomedical, and biosensors. The utilization of polymer gels in different medical and industrial applications requires a better understanding of the formation process, the factors which affect the gel's stability, and the structure-rheological properties relationship. The present review aims to give an overview of the polymer gels, the classification of polymer gels' materials to highlight their important features, and the recent development in biomedical applications. Several perspectives on future advancement of polymer hydrogel are offered.

Wound healing promotion by flaxseed extract-loaded polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan nanofibrous scaffolds

Impaired wound healing is a severe complication of sufferers, related to prolonged wound closure, a high infection rate, and eventually disabilities of organs. To aid resolve this issue, we developed the electrospun polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan (PVA/CS) nanofibrous scaffold-loaded flaxseed extract. The scaffold containing 10 wt% of the extract indicated a three-dimensional cross-network with a nano-scale diameter (257 ± 37 nm) and smooth surface. Also, the relevant analyses confirmed high water absorption, porosity, and wettability of the scaffold. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), degradation, and mechanical studies revealed the intact presence and loading of the extract into the scaffold, the complete degradation over 48 h, and a high tensile elastic modulus. Besides, the advanced scaffold displayed remarkable anti-oxidant and could inhibit the growth of both Gram-positive and negative bacteria compared to the free PVA/CS scaffold. Desired fibroblast viability and blood compatibility of flaxseed-loaded scaffold endorsed the biocompatibility for wound zones. The in vitro studies showed that the flaxseed-loaded scaffold resulted in an accelerated wound healing process and 100 % closure of the scratched area within 48 h. The results obtained reveal that the flaxseed-loaded PVA/CS electrospun scaffold could be effectively applied for wound healing promotion.

Chitosan Superabsorbent Biopolymers in Sanitary and Hygiene Applications

The consumption of diapers and sanitary products has constantly been rising. Several problems are associated with using chemical-based sanitary products, which are difficult to degrade easily and cause nappy rash and bacterial infections in babies. Therefore, there is an increasing shift towards natural-based sanitary products because of their biodegradability, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility. Several studies are being carried out in which researchers have incorporated natural polymers, such as cellulose, starch, alginate, and xantham gum for producing superabsorbent materials. Chitosan (CS) is one such natural polymer that exhibits anti-microbial activity because of the functional groups present in its structure. Moreover, it is also easily available, biodegradable, and non-toxic. This review mainly focuses on CS’s properties and several approaches to synthesizing natural polymer-based superabsorbent products, such as sanitary pads and diapers. It also briefly discusses the diversified applications of CS as a biopolymer in the cosmetic, medical, food, and textile industries. In addition, this study implies using CS as a superabsorbent biopolymer in the manufacturing and producing sanitary products for women and children. Due to the excellent water retention capacity, swelling ability, and anti-microbial activity exhibited by CS can be considered a potential candidate for producing superabsorbent biopolymers.

Fabrication of Bio-Based Film Comprising Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Loaded Chitosan for Wound Dressing Applications

In the current work, chitosan (CS)-metal oxide nanohybrid (MONH) composites are prepared via combining CS with MONH made of vanadium oxide (V₂O₅), ytterbium trioxide (Yb₂O₃), and graphene oxide (GO) to generate promising wound dressing materials using the film-casting method. The developed nanohybrid@CS was examined using techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). For Yb₂O₃@CS, the surface morphology was shown to be a rough and porous surface with pores that ranged in size from 3.0 to 5.0 µm. For CS with Yb₂O₃, Yb₂O₃/V₂O₅@CS, and Yb₂O₃/V₂O₅/GO@CS, the contact angles were 72.5°, 68.2°, and 46.5°, respectively. When the nanohybrid@CS was in its hydrophilic phase, which is good for absorbing moisture and drugs, there was a notable decrease in angles that tended to rise. Additionally, the inclusion of MONH allowed the cell viability to be confirmed with an IC₅₀ of 1997.2 g/mL and the cell growth to reach 111.3% at a concentration of 7.9 g/mL.

A new trend of using poly(vinyl alcohol) in 3D and 4D printing technologies: Process and applications

Recently, 3D/4D printing technologies have been the researchers' interest, and they are getting improved more important. They are applicable in various fields like medical fields, pharmaceutics, construction, tissue engineering, dentistry, water treatment, etc. These technologies overcame the difficulty of the conventional methods in producing complicated structures. They can be fed by different materials such as nanomaterials, smart polymers, responsive polymers, metamaterials, synthetic polymers, natural polymers, and so forth. One of the smart and stimuli-responsive polymers is poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). In addition to numerous applications of PVA like medicine, environmental fields, etc., researchers are showing a tendency to use PVA in 3D/4D printing technologies. The main reasons for PVA's increased interest in 3D/4D printing technologies are suitable flowability, stimuli-responsivity, extrudability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, cost-effectiveness, and other features. This review aims to introduce the 3D/4D printing technologies' knowledge and then the applications of PVA as a feed in these novel technologies.
