Smart packaging films based on locust bean gum, polyvinyl alcohol, the crude extract of Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum petals and its purified fractions

Development of dual-channel starch-based film incorporated with betanin@β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex and berberine for indicating shrimp freshness

In this study, the β-cyclodextrin encapsulated betanin (BET@β-CD) with improved thermal stability and retention as well as the berberine (BBR) with aggregate induced luminescence effect were incorporated into corn amylose (CA) biomatrix to develop colorimetric/fluorescent dual-channel smart film. Results shown that the added functional components were uniformly distributed in the film matrix. The high tensile strength (78.87%), low water solubility (31.15%) and water vapor permeability (1.24 × 10-10 g Pa-1 s-1 m-1) of the film predicted its acceptable stability. It was worth mentioning that the film displayed excellent responsiveness to volatile ammonia (0.025-25 mg/mL) with at least 4 times recyclability. Application experiment demonstrated that the film can achieve macroscopic dynamic monitoring of the freshness of shrimps stored at 25 °C, 4 °C, -20 °C under daylight (red to yellow) and UV light (yellow-green to blue-green). Thus, the study suggests an attractive and effective strategy for constructing dual-mode smart packaging materials for food freshness detection.

Development of bioactive films loaded with extract and polysaccharide of Pinus brutia bark

Society's interest in natural and clean products in many areas, such as food and cosmetics, has increased considerably. It has led to the development of new techniques in the packaging of products so that the wastes from the preferred products can be recycled. In this context, Pinus brutia bark was preferred within the scope of the study to transform natural wastes into functional components and use them as packaging material. P. brutia bark (PBB) samples were collected from Bursa, Turkey. PBB samples were ultrasonically extracted using various solvents (acetone, butanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, hexane, methanol, petroleum ether, and water) and a solvent-acidic hydrolysis system. The phenolic content profile of PBB samples was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection, and total flavonoid content, antioxidant capacity, and total phenolic content were determined. Chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (CS-PVA) films loaded with polysaccharides and containing methanolic extract were developed. The physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the films were characterized. It is known that the thickness of the films determines the mechanical properties required to maintain the integrity of the packaging during storage and transport. From the results of the study, it was concluded that the elongation at break value was higher in CS-PVA-PBB-M films (111.08% ± 10.46%), Young's modulus (31.74 ± 21.37 N/mm2), and tensile strength (3.01 ± 0.50 N/mm2) values were higher in CS-PVA films. In this case, it was concluded that adding proanthocyanidin to edible films gives flexibility to the films.

Monitor the freshness of shrimp by smart halochromic films based on gelatin/pectin loaded with pistachio peel anthocyanin nanoemulsion

This paper focuses on the combination of gelatin (Gel), pectin (Pec), and Pistachio peel anthocyanins (PSAs) to develop a halochromic film for food applications (shrimp). The results of spectroscopic properties showed that the film components had proper interaction and compatibility. Furthermore, the addition of PSAs and Pec improved the thermal stability of films. The addition of Pec and PSAs significantly improved the physical properties and mechanical resistance of the films. So that, the permeability to water vapor and oxygen reduced from 2.81 to 2.74 (g‧s-1‧Pa-1‧m-1) and 5.25 to 4.70 (meq/kgO2), respectively. In addition, the strength and flexibility of halochromic film reached 0.7 MPa and 56 % compared to Gel film (0.62 MPa, and 46.96 %). Most importantly, the color changes of the smart film from cherry/pink to yellow/brown, which were proportional to the color changes of the anthocyanin solution at different pHs, were able to monitor the shrimp freshness and spoilage at room (20 °C) and refrigerated (4 °C) temperature for 14 days.

A photocrosslinked methacrylated carboxymethyl chitosan/oxidized locust bean gum double network hydrogel for cartilage repair

Repairing articular cartilage defects is a great challenge due to the poor self-regenerative capability of cartilage. Inspired by active substances found in the natural cartilage extracellular matrix, we used methacrylated carboxymethyl chitosan (MA-CMCS) and oxidized locust bean gum (OLBG) as the hydrogel backbone, and prepared a photocrosslinked dual network hydrogel containing allicin and decellularized cartilage powder (DCP). The rheological, swelling and water retention capacities of MA-CMCS@OLBG-Allicin/DCP (MCOAC) hydrogels were investigated to confirm the successful preparation of hydrogels suitable for cartilage repair. The MCOAC hydrogels showed good antibacterial ability to kill S. aureus and E. coli and anti-inflammatory properties due to the introduction of allicin. Furthermore, MA-CMCS@OLBG-Allicin/DCP hydrogels presented good cytocompatibility due to the addition of DCP, which could promote chondrocyte proliferation and promote the differentiation of BMSCs to chondrocytes. Further studies in vivo demonstrated that the DCP-contained MCOAC hydrogel exhibited superior performance in promoting cartilage tissue growth and wound healing in articular cartilage defects. Thus, the MCOAC hydrogel is a promising cartilage repair hydrogel with potential for clinical use.

Development and application of intelligent packaging films based on guar gum, polyvinyl alcohol and hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus (L.) sweet) anthocyanins

The pH-response color-changeable films were prepared by adding different contents (1 %, 2 % and 3 %) of hyacinth bean anthocyanins (HBA) into guar gum/polyvinyl alcohol blend matrix. The structural characterization and optical, barrier, mechanical, thermal, antioxidant and color-changeable properties of the films were determined. The films were applied to monitor the freshness of chilled shrimp and pork. Results showed that HBA were pH-dependent color-changeable pigments that endowed the films with purple color. 2 % and 3 % of HBA improved the uniformity and compactness of the films by forming hydrogen bonds with film matrix. The barrier ability of the films against UV-vis light, water vapor and oxygen was significantly elevated by 2 % and 3 % of HBA. The mechanical, thermal and antioxidant properties of the films were improved by HBA. The films containing HBA were much sensitive to pH variation and ammonia vapor, presenting obvious color changes (purple→green→yellow-green). The films containing HBA showed good color stability when stored at 4 °C for 30 days. Moreover, the film containing 2 % HBA showed color changes (purple→green) when the chilled shrimp and pork decayed. The results suggested that the film containing 2 % HBA was suitable to monitor the freshness of meat products in intelligent packaging field.

Intermolecular binding of blueberry anthocyanins with water-soluble polysaccharides: Enhancing their thermostability and antioxidant abilities

This study investigated the protective effect of β-glucan (BG), konjac glucomannan (KGM) and xanthan gum (XG) on thermo-stability and antioxidant capacities of blueberry anthocyanins (ACN) and their interaction mechanisms. Twenty-six glycosylated and acylated ACN were identified, and malvidin-3-O-galactose was predominant (36.78 %) in ACN extracts. Three polysaccharides retained colour and stability and antioxidant capabilities of ACN under thermal-treatments (XG > KGM > BG). Rheological properties (shear stress, apparent viscosity) of three polysaccharides were enhanced in presence of ACN. UV-visible spectra, SEM and DLS results indicated that co-aggregation between ACN and specific zones of these polysaccharides was formed. TGA and DSC studies confirmed that introductionof three polysaccharides, especially XG could improve thermostability of ACN. FTIR, and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that thermo-stabilization of polysaccharides-ACN conjugates might be attributedto their intermolecular interactions mainly via hydrogen bindings. The protection by water-soluble polysaccharides foresees novel anthocyanins in food products with increased heat-resistant stability.

A comparison of the impacts of different polysaccharides on the sono-physico-chemical consequences of ultrasonic-assisted modifications

This study aimed to examine the sono-physico-chemical effects of ultrasound (UND) and its impact on the conjugate rates of morin (MOI) following the addition of polysaccharides in various conditions. In comparison to the control group, the incorporation of quaternary ammonium chitosan decreased the rate of MOI conjugation by 17.38%, but the addition of locust bean gum enhanced the grafting rate by 29.89%. Notably, the highest degree of myofibrillar protein (MRN) unfolding (fluorescence intensity: 114435.50), the most stable state (-44.98 mV), and the greatest specific surface area (393.06 cm²/cm³) were observed in the UMP/LBG group. The outcomes of atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the inclusion of locust bean gum led to a different microscopic morphology than the other two polysaccharides, which may be the primary cause of the strongest sono-physico-chemical effects of the system. This work demonstrated that acoustic settings can be tuned based on the characteristics of polysaccharides to maximize the advantages of sono-physico-chemical impacts in UND-assisted MOI processing.

Cellulose nanofiber-based multifunctional films integrated with carbon dots and anthocyanins from Brassica oleracea for active and intelligent food packaging applications

A new generation of carbon dot-based active and intelligent packaging films with UV blocking, antibacterial, and real-time sensing potentials was fabricated using Brassica oleracea (BO) extract. The cellulose nanofiber (CNF) was used to prepare the multifunctional intelligent nanocomposite film integrated with BO anthocyanins (BOA) and BO-biowaste-derived carbon dots (BO-CDs). The incorporation of 1.5 % BO-CD and 6 % BOA in the CNF matrix improved the physicochemical and UV blocking (>189 % increase) properties of the fabricated films. The synthesized BO-CD exhibits high fluorescence, UV absorption, antibacterial and antioxidant functions. It showed strong radical scavenging activity against ABTS (~90 %) and DPPH (~80 %) compared to the neat CNF film. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have shown enhanced compatibility and elemental composition of the BO-CDs/BOA additives in the CNF-polymer matrix. Packaging tests showed that the prepared film worked efficiently and non-destructively and was able to monitor the freshness of minced pork, fish, and shrimp in real-time through a distinct visual change from red to colorless/yellow during storage at 25 °C for 48 h. Active and intelligent films developed based on CNF/BO-CDs/BOA are expected to be applied as multifunctional packaging materials that can indicate quality changes and extend the shelf life of packaged perishable foods.

Locust bean gum/carboxycellulose nanocrystal coating incorporating ZnO clusters built by the accretion of micro spindles or sheets for strawberries preservation

Two shapes of ZnO clusters constructed by the growth of spindle-like (I-ZnO) and sheet-like (II-ZnO) microparticles added to Locust bean gum/carboxycellulose nanocrystal (LBG/C-CNC) coating for improving properties as the enhancers and antibacterial agents. Subsequently, active LBG/C-CNC/ZnO (LCZ) coatings were evaluated to combat the fruits rot triggered by microorganisms aiming to extend their shelf life. The results showed that II-ZnO clusters with flower-shape enhanced the properties more obviously due to more interaction sites. The oxygen and water vapor permeability of the coating containing 5 % II-ZnO (LCZII-5) decreased from 2.00 and 5.98 × 10^-11 to 0.6 cm³ mm m^-2 day^-1 atm^-1 and 1.85 × 10^-11 g m^-1 s^-1 Pa^-1, respectively. And the antibacterial rate against E. coli and S. aureus could reach more than 75 %. Meanwhile, the tensile strength (TS) increased by 50.95 %. The inhibition rates on strawberries of weight and Vc loss by LCZII-5 coating were 30.64 % and 53.59 %, respectively. More importantly, the coatings could be easily washed off with water in spite of tightly being connected with the surface of the strawberries. As was expected, this study provides a feasible method for preparing novel fruit coatings with an effective preservation.

Natural Gum-Based Functional Bioactive Films and Coatings: A Review

Edible films and coatings are a current and future food packaging trend. In the food and envi-ronmental sectors, there is a growing need to understand the role of edible packaging and sus-tainability. Gums are polysaccharides of natural origin that are frequently utilized as thickeners, clarifying agents, gelling agents, emulsifiers, and stabilizers in the food sector. Gums come in a variety of forms, including seed gums, mucilage gums, exudate gums, and so on. As a biodegradable and sustainable alternative to petrochemical-based film and coatings, gums could be a promising option. Natural plant gum-based edible packaging helps to ensure extension of shelf-life of fresh and processed foods while also reducing microbiological alteration and/or oxidation processes. In this review, the possible applications of gum-based polymers and their functional properties in development of edible films and coatings, were comprehensively dis-cussed. In the future, technology for developing natural gum-based edible films and coatings might be applied commercially to improve shelf life and preserve the quality of foods.

Locust Bean Gum, a Vegetable Hydrocolloid with Industrial and Biopharmaceutical Applications

Locust bean gum (LBG), a vegetable galactomannan extracted from carob tree seeds, is extensively used in the food industry as a thickening agent (E410). Its molecular conformation in aqueous solutions determines its solubility and rheological performance. LBG is an interesting polysaccharide also because of its synergistic behavior with other biopolymers (xanthan gum, carrageenan, etc.). In addition, this hydrocolloid is easily modified by derivatization or crosslinking. These LBG-related products, besides their applications in the food industry, can be used as encapsulation and drug delivery devices, packaging materials, batteries, and catalyst supports, among other biopharmaceutical and industrial uses. As the new derivatized or crosslinked polymers based on LBG are mainly biodegradable and non-toxic, the use of this polysaccharide (by itself or combined with other biopolymers) will contribute to generating greener products, considering the origin of raw materials used, the modification procedures selected and the final destination of the products.

Development of Shrimp Freshness Indicating Films by Embedding Anthocyanins-Rich Rhododendron simsii Flower Extract in Locust Bean Gum/Polyvinyl Alcohol Matrix

Freshness indicating films containing anthocyanins are one type of smart packaging technology. Anthocyanins in the films can show visual color changes when food spoilage occurs, thereby indicating the freshness degree of food in real-time. Rhododendron simsii is a landscape plant with attractive flowers that are abundant in anthocyanins. In this study, smart packaging films were prepared by embedding 2% and 4% R. simsii flower anthocyanins (RA) in locust bean gum- (LBG) and polyvinyl alcohol- (PVA) based matrices. The micro-structure, barrier, mechanical, thermal, antioxidant, and color-changeable properties of the films were determined. The potential application of the films in indicating the freshness of shrimp at 4 °C was also investigated. Results showed that the RA interacted with the LBG/PVA matrices through hydrogen bonds, which significantly improved the barrier, mechanical, thermal, antioxidant, pH-sensitive, and ammonia-sensitive properties of the films. Meanwhile, the performance of the films was remarkably influenced by the content of the RA. The film containing 4% RA had the highest light blocking ability, tensile strength (38.32 MPa), elongation at break (58.18%), and antioxidant activity, and also showed the lowest water vapor permeability (22.10 × 10^-11 g m^-1 s^-1 Pa^-1) and oxygen permeability (0.36 cm³ mm m^-2 day^-1 atm^-1). The films containing 2% and 4% RA could effectively change their colors when the level of total volatile basic nitrogen in the shrimp exceeded the safe value, which demonstrated the suitability of the films for indicating the freshness degree of shrimp.

Active/intelligent packaging films developed by immobilizing anthocyanins from purple sweetpotato and purple cabbage in locust bean gum, chitosan and κ-carrageenan-based matrices

Active/intelligent packaging films were developed by incorporating purple sweetpotato anthocyanins (PSA) and purple cabbage anthocyanins (PCA) in locust bean gum/polyvinyl alcohol (LP), chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CP) and κ-carrageenan/polyvinyl alcohol (KP) film matrices. The joint effect of anthocyanins' source and polysaccharides' nature on the structure and functionality of the films was determined. Results showed PSA and PCA interacted with film matrices through hydrogen bonds and/or electrostatic interactions, resulting in improved film uniformity. PSA and PCA did not remarkably alter the water vapor permeability and tensile strength of the films; however, significantly improved the light barrier ability, antioxidant activity, pH-sensitivity and ammonia-sensitivity of films. For the films containing the same anthocyanins (PSA or PCA), LP-based films had relatively higher light barrier ability and storage stability, while CP-based had relatively weaker color changeable ability. When PSA and PCA were immobilized in the same film matrix, the films containing PCA had higher light barrier ability and antioxidant activity than the films containing PSA. Among the films, LP-PCA film exhibited a good potential to monitor the freshness of shrimp. Results suggested the structure and functionality of the films were influenced by the source of anthocyanins and the nature of polysaccharides.
