Eco-friendly whey/polysaccharide-based hydrogel with poly(lactic acid) for improvement of agricultural soil quality and plant growth

This study addresses the dual challenge of agricultural cost and waste management by harnessing agrarian waste to produce nano-fertilizers (NF) to enhance crop yield while mitigating environmental impacts. Recognizing the limitations of traditional hydrogels' non-biodegradability and their inability to sustain root zone moisture and nutrient levels, we developed an LNR/AAc/pectin hydrogel. This innovative hydrogel offers a viable solution that provides a consistent NF supply and improves water retention efficiently. Additionally, we utilized Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to analyze the hydrogel's structure, stability, and form. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) were employed to ascertain the NF concentration. The optimization of the hydrogel's swelling and NF release was conducted through a 5-level, 2-factor Response Surface Methodology (RSM), focusing on the effects of the AAc: LNR ratio and pectin weight while maintaining constant concentrations of potassium persulfate (KPS) and MBA. Results revealed a high correlation between predicted and experimental values, with determination coefficients (R2) of 0.9982 for swelling and 0.9979 for NF release. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibited a 96.30 % biodegradation rate after 120 days of soil burial. Our findings demonstrate the hydrogels' potential to significantly impact farming and gardening by ensuring a sustainable supply of nutrients to enhance soil moisture retention.

Influence of carboxy-terminated hyperbranched polyester and polyethylene glycol on the mechanical and thermal properties of polylactic acid/straw flour composites

Polylactic acid (PLA) wood-plastic composites have a significant advantage over traditional petroleum-based plastics due to their biodegradability. However, PLA has several shortcomings, including high brittleness, low heat resistance, slow crystallization, and poor compatibility with biomass materials, which have limited its potential applications. In this paper, we investigated the effects of carboxy-terminated hyperbranched polyester (CHBP) on the mechanical, crystalline, and thermal properties of PLA/straw flour (SF) blends through extrusion injection molding. Additionally, we added the traditional plasticizer polyethylene glycol (PEG) to synergize with CHBP to enhance the toughness of PLA/SF composites. Our results showed that the appropriate addition of CHBP effectively improved the interfacial bonding between PLA and straw flour. The incorporation of CHBP also improved the tensile strength, bending strength, impact strength, elongation at break, thermal stability, and crystallization rate of the composites. Furthermore, the addition of both CHBP and PEG significantly improved the impact strength of the composites compared to using PEG alone. This method also improved the heat resistance of the material and reduced the migration of plasticizers. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of using hyperbranched polymers and plasticizers to enhance the toughness, thermal stability, and crystalline properties of PLA wood-plastic composites, providing a new approach to improving the properties of these composites.

Superabsorbent quaternary ammonium guar gum hydrogel with controlled release of humic acid for soil improvement and plant growth

Growing plants in karst areas tends to be difficult due to the easy loss of water and soil. To enhance soil agglomeration, water retention, and soil fertility, this study developed a physically and chemically crosslinked hydrogel prepared from quaternary ammonium guar gum and humic acid. The results showed that non-covalent dynamic bonds between the two components delayed humic acid release into the soil, with a release rate of only 35 % after 240 h. The presence of four hydrophilic groups (quaternary ammonium, hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl) in the hydrogel more than doubled the soil's water retention capacity. The interaction between hydrogel and soil minerals (especially carbonate and silica) promoted hydrogel-soil and soil‑carbonate adhesion, and the adhesion strength between soil particles was enhanced by 650 %. Moreover, compared with direct fertilization, this degradable hydrogel not only increased the germination rate (100 %) and growth status of mung beans but also reduced the negative effects of excessive fertilization on plant roots. The study provides an eco-friendly, low-cost, and intelligent system for soil improvement in karst areas. It further proves the considerable application potential of hydrogels in agriculture.

Agriculture 4.0: Polymer Hydrogels as Delivery Agents of Active Ingredients

The evolution from conventional to modern agricultural practices, characterized by Agriculture 4.0 principles such as the application of innovative materials, smart water, and nutrition management, addresses the present-day challenges of food supply. In this context, polymer hydrogels have become a promising material for enhancing agricultural productivity due to their ability to retain and then release water, which can help alleviate the need for frequent irrigation in dryland environments. Furthermore, the controlled release of fertilizers by the hydrogels decreases chemical overdosing risks and the environmental impact associated with the use of agrochemicals. The potential of polymer hydrogels in sustainable agriculture and farming and their impact on soil quality is revealed by their ability to deliver nutritional and protective active ingredients. Thus, the impact of hydrogels on plant growth, development, and yield was discussed. The question of which hydrogels are more suitable for agriculture-natural or synthetic-is debatable, as both have their merits and drawbacks. An analysis of polymer hydrogel life cycles in terms of their initial material has shown the advantage of bio-based hydrogels, such as cellulose, lignin, starch, alginate, chitosan, and their derivatives and hybrids, aligning with sustainable practices and reducing dependence on non-renewable resources.

Improvement in Crystallization, Thermal, and Mechanical Properties of Flexible Poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide) Bioplastic with Zinc Phenylphosphate

Poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) shows promise for use in bioplastic applications due to its greater flexibility over PLLA. However, further research is needed to improve PLLA-PEG-PLLA's properties with appropriate fillers. This study employed zinc phenylphosphate (PPZn) as a multi-functional filler for PLLA-PEG-PLLA. The effects of PPZn addition on PLLA-PEG-PLLA characteristics, such as crystallization and thermal and mechanical properties, were investigated. There was good phase compatibility between the PPZn and PLLA-PEG-PLLA. The addition of PPZn improved PLLA-PEG-PLLA's crystallization properties, as evidenced by the disappearance of the cold crystallization temperature, an increase in the crystallinity, an increase in the crystallization temperature, and a decrease in the crystallization half-time. The PLLA-PEG-PLLA's thermal stability and heat resistance were enhanced by the addition of PPZn. The PPZn addition also enhanced the mechanical properties of the PLLA-PEG-PLLA, as demonstrated by the rise in ultimate tensile stress and Young's modulus. We can conclude that the PPZn has potential for use as a multi-functional filler for the PLLA-PEG-PLLA composite due to its nucleating-enhancing, thermal-stabilizing, and reinforcing ability.

Porous superabsorbent composites prepared from aqueous foam template and application evaluation

Rapid water absorption is very important for the application of superabsorbent polymers under dry or semi-dry conditions, but there are currently few relevant studies. In this context, a novel porous superabsorbent of chitosan-grafted acrylic copolymer-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid/sapindus mukorossi pericarp/calcined oil shale semi-coke (CS-g-P(AA-co-AMPS)/SMP/COSSC) was prepared by a green and convenient foam template method, which was triggered by redox polymerization. The rich pore structure of the porous superabsorbent was conducive to accelerating the water absorption rate. It only took 15 min to reach a swelling capacity of 650 g g-1 in distilled water. Soil experiments show that even with the addition of 0.5 wt% porous superabsorbent, the soil water retention time can be extended to 7 days. Finally, it was applied to the growth of cabbage seeds and it was found that the growth was significantly improved. Based on these excellent properties, we expect to provide a valuable reference for the preparation of fast-absorbing materials through the green water-based foam template method, contributing to sustainable agriculture.

Superabsorbent hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides: Classification, synthesis, physicochemical properties, and agronomic efficacy under abiotic stress conditions: A review

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are a class of polymers that have attracted tremendous interest due to their multifunctional properties and wide range of applications. The importance of this class of polymers is highlighted by the large number of publications, including articles and patents, dealing with the use of SAPs for various applications. Within this framework, this review provides an overview of SAPs and highlights various key aspects, such as their history, classification, and preparation methods, including those related to chemically or physically cross-linked networks, as well as key factors affecting their performance in terms of water absorption and storage. This review also examines the potential use of polysaccharides-based SAPs in agriculture as soil conditioners or slow-release fertilizers. The basic aspects of SAPs, and methods of chemical modification of polysaccharides are presented and guidelines for the preparation of hydrogels are given. The water retention and swelling mechanisms are discussed in light of some mathematical empirical models. The nutrient slow-release kinetics of nutrient-rich SAPs are also examined on the basic of commonly used mathematical models. Some examples illustrating the advantages of using SAPs in agriculture as soil conditioners and agrochemical carriers to improve crop growth and productivity are presented and discussed. This review also attempts to provide an overview of the role of SAPs in mitigating the adverse effects of various abiotic stresses, such as heavy metals, salinity, and drought, and outlines future trends and prospects.

Renewable whey-based hydrogel with polysaccharides and polyvinyl alcohol as a soil amendment for sustainable agricultural application

This work describes the preparation of a novel biopolymer hydrogel based on acid whey, cellulose derivatives and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The hydrogel was prepared and characterized with the aim of producing an environmentally-friendly soil amendment to increase water retention capacity of the soil. The findings showed considerable swelling properties of the hydrogels depending on the PVA content and crosslinking density. The samples with PVA in a concentration 2.5 % and 5 % were more rigid, the gel fraction increased with a subsequently decrease in their swelling capacity. The hydrogels crosslinked with 15 % of citric acid demonstrated a constant swelling ratio (SR) of around 500 % within 10 swelling/drying cycles. The hydrogels crosslinked with 10 % citric acid and supplemented with 1 % of PVA showed SR of 1000-1400 % caused by less crosslinked polymer network and increased pore volume for water uptake. It was found that hydrogel with a higher gel fraction had a stable structure. Supplementing PVA at 5 % extended the period of decomposition of the hydrogel material by almost 60 % in the soil environment and soil humidity was maintained for longer. Applying 2 % of the hydrogel 5PVA to soil increased the water retention capacity by 19 %.

Rice Husk with PLA: 3D Filament Making and Additive Manufacturing of Samples for Potential Structural Applications

Additive manufacturing has garnered significant attention as a versatile method for fabricating green and complex composite materials. This study delves into the fabrication of polymer composites by employing polylactic acid (PLA) in conjunction with rice husk as a reinforcing filler. The filaments were made by an extruded filament maker and then were used to make tensile and impact samples by another extrusion technology, fused deposition modeling (FDM). The structural and morphological characteristics of the composite materials were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy SEM. Results show that both the filament and samples are very reliable in producing polymer parts with this rice husk solid waste. This research contributes to increasing materials' circularity and potentially creating a local social economy around rice production, where this waste is not much used.

Preparation and characterization of slow-release fertilizers loaded guar gum-g-poly methylmethacrylate-cl-polylactic acid (Gg-g-PMMA-cl-PLA) hydrogel and its effect on wheat growth

In order to reduce the harmful effects of synthetic non-biodegradable hydrogel, biopolymers have attracted attention, particularly for use in slow-release fertilizers. The current attempt intends to develop a hydrogel from biopolymers for sustainable release of water and nutrients in soil. Here, guar gum is used as a polysaccharide, MMA as a monomer, KPS as an initiator, and Polylactic acid as a cross-linker. Further investigation is done to study synthesized hydrogel in the development of wheat crop. Biodegradation study shows that it's environmentally favorable and degradable, contributing nutrients to the soil as it decomposes. Fertilizer release studies in soil and water show that the timing of the nutrient release is delayed, improving soil water holding capacity and retention studies. The agronomic parameters show that fertilizers-loaded hydrogel has a positive effect on physiological, morphological characteristics like shoot length, root length, number of shoots and roots, shoot weight and root weight, chlorophyll content, and most notably, fruiting efficiency is enhanced as compared with commercially available hydrogel. ATR-FTIR, SEM-EDX, TGA-DTA, and XRD analysis used to confirm successful loading of fertilizers and biodegradation of hydrogel. The encouraging findings suggested that this hydrogel could be used as a multifunctional, fertilizers-loaded hydrogel in crop production.

Improved Soil Amendment by Integrating Metal Complexes and Biodegradable Complexing Agents in Superabsorbents

The superabsorbents' application as materials for the preparation of modern mineral fertilizers of controlled activity is presented. Under the static conditions, the commercial acrylic-based Agro® Hydrogel was used as a sorbent for Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), and Zn(II) ions in the presence of three biodegradable complexing agents of the new generation: (N-1,2-dicarboxyethyl)-D,L-aspartate acid (IDHA), N,N-ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) and N,N-bis(carboxymethyl) glutamic acid (GLDA). The ions and complexes concentrations were determined by the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The characterization of hydrogel before and after the adsorption process was made using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), surface area determination (ASAP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) as well as the thermogravimetric (TGA) methods. The influence of the phase contact time, initial concentration, and pH on the adsorption capacities was investigated. The kinetic and adsorption parameters were determined. The Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Temkin adsorption models were applied to describe the experimental data. The Langmuir isotherm model accurately characterized the equilibrium process. The adsorption process was fast, and it reached equilibrium after 60 min of the phase contact time. The research on the adsorption of Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), and Zn(II) onto Agro® Hydrogel with IDHA, EDDS, and GLDA indicates that these complexing agents improve process efficiency.

Physically and Chemically Cross-Linked Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Humic Acid Hydrogels for Agricultural Applications

The preparation method of hydrogels has a significant effect on their structural and physicochemical properties. In this report, physically and chemically cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) networks containing humic acid (HA) were alternatively prepared by autoclaving (AC) and through glutaraldehyde (GA) addition, respectively, for agricultural purposes. PVA/HA hydrogels were comparatively characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical assays, scanning electron microscopy, swelling kinetics measurements, and water retention tests in soil. AC hydrogels showed a more homogeneous porous microstructure, higher swelling levels, and a better capacity to preserve the humidity of soil than those obtained by adding GA. Both PVA/HA hydrogels exhibited no phytotoxicity on cultivation trials of Sorghum sp., but the plant growth was promoted with the GA-cross-linked network as compared to the effect of the AC sample. The release behavior of urea was modified according to the preparation method of the PVA/HA hydrogels. After 3 days of sustained urea release, 91% of the fertilizer was delivered from the AC hydrogel, whereas a lower amount of 56% was released for the GA-cross-linked hydrogel. Beyond the advantages of applying PVA/HA hydrogels in the agricultural field, an appropriate method of preparing these materials endows them with specific properties according to the requirements of the target crop.

Improvement in Phase Compatibility and Mechanical Properties of Poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide)/thermoplastic Starch Blends with Citric Acid

Flexible poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide) block copolymer (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) bioplastic has been blended with low-cost thermoplastic starch (TPS) to prepare fully biodegradable bioplastics. However, the mechanical properties of PLLA-PEG-PLLA matrix decrease after the addition of TPS. In this work, citric acid (CA) was used as a compatibilizer to improve the phase compatibility and mechanical properties of PLLA-PEG-PLLA/TPS blends. TPS was first modified with CA (1.5 %wt, 3 %wt, and 4.5%wt) before melt blending with PLLA-PEG-PLLA. The PLLA-PEG-PLLA/modified TPS ratio was constant at 60/40 by weight. CA modification of TPS suppressed the crystallinity and enhanced the thermal stability of the PLLA-PEG-PLLA matrix, as determined through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The compatibility between the dispersed TPS and PLLA-PEG-PLLA phases was improved through modification of TPS with CA, as revealed by the smaller size of the co-continuous TPS phase from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Increasing the hydrophilicity of the blends containing modified TPS confirmed the improvement in phase compatibility of the components. From the tensile test, the ultimate tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus of the blends increased with the CA content. In conclusion, CA showed a promising behavior in improving the phase compatibility and mechanical properties of PLLA-PEG-PLLA/TPS blends. These PLLA-PEG-PLLA/modified TPS blends have potential to be used as flexible bioplastic products.

Environmentally adaptive polysaccharide-based hydrogels and their applications in extreme conditions: A review

Polysaccharide hydrogels are one of the most promising hydrogel materials due to their inherent characteristics, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, renewability, and easy modification, and their structure and functional designs have been widely researched to adapt to different application scenarios as well as to broaden their application fields. As typical wet-soft materials, the high water content and water-absorbing ability of polysaccharide-based hydrogels (PHs) are conducive to their wide biomedical applications, such as wound healing, tissue repair, and drug delivery. In addition, along with technological progress, PHs have shown potential application prospects in some high-tech fields, including human-computer interaction, intelligent driving, smart dressing, flexible sensors, etc. However, in practical applications, due to the poor ability of PHs to resist freezing below zero, dehydration at high temperature, and acid-base/swelling-induced deformation in a solution environment, they are prone to lose their wet-soft peculiarities, including structural integrity, injectability, flexibility, transparency, conductivity and other inherent characteristics, which greatly limit their high-tech applications. Hence, reducing their freezing point, enhancing their high-temperature dehydration resistance, and improving their extreme solution tolerance are powerful approaches to endow PHs with multienvironmental adaptability, broadening their application areas. This report systematically reviews the study advances of environmentally adaptive polysaccharide-based hydrogels (EAPHs), comprising anti-icing hydrogels, high temperature/dehydration resistant hydrogels, and acid/base/swelling deformation resistant hydrogels in recent years. First, the construction methods of EAPHs are presented, and the mechanisms and properties of freeze-resistant, high temperature/dehydration-resistant, and acid/base/swelling deformation-resistant adaptations are simply demonstrated. Meanwhile, the features of different strategies to prepare EAPHs as well as the strategies of simultaneously attaining multienvironmental adaptability are reviewed. Then, the applications of extreme EAPHs are summarized, and some meaningful works are well introduced. Finally, the issues and future outlooks of PH environment adaptation research are elucidated.

Preparation of flexible poly(l-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(l-lactide)/talcum/thermoplastic starch ternary composites for use as heat-resistant and single-use bioplastics

Poly(l-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(l-lactide) block copolymer (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) is a highly flexible bioplastic, yet its use in practical applications is limited due to its poor heat resistance and high production cost. In this study, talcum was used as a nucleating agent to improve the heat resistance, and thermoplastic starch (TPS) was used as a low-cost filler to reduce the cost of production. PLLA-PEG-PLLA/talcum/TPS and PLLA/talcum/TPS ternary composites with 4 wt% talcum and various TPS contents were prepared by melt blending before injection molding and were then evaluated. When PEG middle-blocks were present, the PLLA-PEG-PLLA-based composites showed a higher crystallinity, more flexibility, and a higher heat resistance than the PLLA-based composites. Although the addition of TPS decreased the heat resistance of all the composites, the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/talcum/TPS composites still had high Vicat softening temperatures (VST, 113-131 °C) and demonstrated a good dimensional stability to heat by maintaining their original shapes upon heat exposure. The biodegradation test in soil suggested that the synergistic effect of the PEG middle-blocks and TPS significantly increased the biodegradability of the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/talcum/TPS composites. This improved heat resistance, lower cost, and accelerated biodegradation make PLLA-PEG-PLLA/talcum/TPS composites a promising material to be used as heat-resistant and single-use bioplastic products.

Synthesis of starch-based smart hydrogel derived from rice-cooked wastewater for agricultural use

The synthesis of biodegradable hydrogel based on naturally available macromolecules is an important area of research. We synthesized new hydrogel using rice-cooked wastewater (starch), acrylamide, and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropansulfonic acid in an aqueous medium. The synthesis approach is facile, low-cost, eco-friendly, and novel. The synthesized materials were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Thermogravimetric analysis. The hydrogel exhibited maximum tap water absorbency (158.3 g/g) at pH 7, saline water absorbency (50 g/g), urea solution absorbency (141.2 g/g) at 24 h, and excellent water retention capability (47 wt% at 70 °C, 12 h, and 89 wt% at 30 °C, 24 h). Chili plants, mung beans, and pea seeds germinated and grew well in the hydrogel and hydrogel-mixed soil, respectively. The biodegradability study shows 34.6 % at 120 days in soil and 6.5 % at 30 days in the open air. These findings could entice agricultural development in dry soil.

Hydrogels improved parsley (Petroselinium crispum(Mill.) Nyman) growth and development under water deficit stress

Water scarcity is one of the most pressing problems facing countries in the semi-arid and arid regions of the world. Data predicts that by 2030, global water consumption will increase by 50%, leading to severe water shortages. Today, agricultural production consumes more than 70% of fresh water in many parts of the world, increasing the pressure on water scarcity. For these reasons, agricultural production models and approaches should be developed to reduce water consumption. One developed approach is the use of hydrogel to reduce water consumption and have a positive effect on plant growth. This study investigated the use of hydrogels as chemical components that can be used in water shortage conditions and against the expected water scarcity. Parsley was used as the model organism. The method used was as follows: two different water treatments (50% and 100%) and four different hydrogel concentrations (0%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) were applied, and root width and length, leaf width and length, main stem length, and the number of tillers were measured. According to the results, while no improvement was observed in the plants with 100% hydrogel concentration, the best results were obtained from 50% hydrogel application. The results obtained from 75% hydrogel application were found to be higher than those of 100% hydrogel but lower than 0% hydrogel application. With 50% hydrogel (water-restricted), all plant growth parameters were higher compared to the plants with 100% (full irrigation) water application. It was determined that the average value of the I1 (50%) irrigation was the highest (3.6), and the average value of the I2 (100%) irrigation (2.4) was the lowest. It was determined that the highest average value (6.2) in all measured traits was the average value of the H1 (50%) application, and the lowest average value (0.0) was in the H3 hydrogel applications (100%). In conclusion, this study suggested that hydrogel application is beneficial on a large scale, can optimize water resource management for higher yields in agriculture, and has a positive effect on agricultural yield under water deficit stress.
