Abstract
Based on the previous research, this work aimed to reveal the effect of sweet potato protein hydrolysates (SPPHs) with different molecular weights (1000, 3000, and 8000 Da) at 0.5 % on the gelation behavior of calcium-induced sodium alginate (SA), and the encapsulation efficiency and storage stability of purple sweet potato anthocyanins (PSPA) in calcium-induced alginate gel beads was determined. Results indicated that SPPHs with a molecular weight of 8000 Da formed hydrogen bonds and other interactions with SA, which strengthened the internal network connections of the gel, significantly enhanced the gel and effectively filled its pores. The highest encapsulation efficiency was achieved at 87.27 %, compared to 61.73 % without SPPHs. Additionally, stored at 37 °C for 21 days after commercial sterilization, the residual concentration of PSPA with SPPHs was 2.50 times higher than that without SPPHs. SPPHs can enhance the encapsulation efficiency of PSPA and retard their release in gel beads.

Abstract
Alginate-based packaging materials have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastics due to their biodegradability, renewability, and versatile functionalities. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the recent advances in the development and application of alginate-based films and coatings for food packaging. The composition and fabrication methods of alginate-based packaging materials are discussed, highlighting the incorporation of various functional compounds to enhance their physicochemical properties. The mechanisms of action and the factors influencing the release and migration of active compounds from the alginate matrix are explored. The application of alginate-based packaging materials for the preservation of various food products, including meat, fish, dairy, fruits, and vegetables, is reviewed, demonstrating their effectiveness in extending shelf-life and maintaining quality. The development of alginate-based pH-sensitive indicators for intelligent food packaging is also discussed, focusing on the colorimetric response of natural pigments to spoilage-related pH changes. Furthermore, the review highlights the challenges and future perspectives of alginate-based packaging materials, emphasizing the need for novel strategies to improve their performance, sustainability, and industrial adoption.

Abstract
The nutrients present in food are not only prone to a series of physicochemical reactions but also provide conditions for the growth and reproduction of foodborne microorganisms. In recent years, many innovative methods from different fields have been introduced into food preservation, which extends the shelf life while maximizing the preservation of the original ingredients and properties of food. In this field, there is a lack of a systematic summary of new technologies emerging. In view of this, we overview the innovative methods applied to the field of food preservation in recent 3 years, focusing on a variety of technological approaches such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy based on nanotechnology, electromagnetic radiation sterilization based on radiation technology, and antimicrobial peptides based on biomolecules. We also discuss the preservation mechanism and the application of the different methods to specific categories of products. We evaluated their advantages and limitations in the food industry, describing their development prospects. In addition, as microorganisms are the main causes of food spoilage, our review also has reference significance for clinical antibacterial treatment.

Abstract
The primary challenges in fruit and vegetable preservation include extending storage duration while preserving sensory quality and nutritional value. In this study, sesbania gum (SG) was oxidized to prepare oxidized sesbania gum (OSG). An OSG/ZnO composite film was subsequently prepared, combining OSG, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and nano-zinc oxide (nano-ZnO). The preparation technology was determined via a response surface optimization experiment. When the addition amount of nano-ZnO exceeded 0.3 mg/mL, the composite films exhibited an antibacterial rate of over 90% against E. coli and S. aureus. For wampee (Clausena lansium (Lour.) Skeels) preservation, a OSG/ZnO-0.3 film was directly applied as a coating. The findings demonstrated favorable results in terms of the rate of rotting, soluble solids, and titrable acidity, effectively prolonging wampee fruit storage. This suggests the potential of an OSG composite film with nano-ZnO as a promising fruit packaging material, thereby expanding the application of SG and wampee fruit preservation.

Abstract
The present review paper focuses on recent developments in edible films and coatings made of base compounds from biological sources, namely plants, animals, algae, and microorganisms. These sources include by-products, residues, and wastes from agro-food industries and sea products that contribute to sustainability concerns. Chitosan, derived from animal biological sources, such as crustacean exoskeletons, has been the most studied base compound over the past three years. Polysaccharides typically constitute no more than 3-5% of the film/coating base solution, with some exceptions, like Arabic gum. Proteins and lipids may be present in higher concentrations, such as zein and beeswax. This review also discusses the enrichment of these bio-based films and coatings with various functional and/or bioactive compounds to confer or enhance their functionalities, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-enzymatic properties, as well as physical properties. Whenever possible, a comparative analysis among different formulations was performed. The results of the applications of these edible films and coatings to fruit and vegetable products are also described, including shelf life extension, inhibition of microbial growth, and prevention of oxidation. This review also explores novel types of packaging, such as active and intelligent packaging. The potential health benefits of edible films and coatings, as well as the biodegradability of films, are also discussed. Finally, this review addresses recent innovations in the edible films and coatings industry, including the use of nanotechnologies, aerogels, and probiotics, and provides future perspectives and the challenges that the sector is facing.

Abstract
Food bioactive packaging has received increasing attention from consumers and the food industry for its potential to reduce food waste and environmental issues. Several materials can be used to produce edible films/coats; however, bio-based, cost-effective, and sustainable coatings have gained a high reputation these days. For instance, Aloe vera gel (AV) is a promising bio-based material for edible coatings and films; therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the film-forming abilities of AV and Chitosan (CH) combination as a potential active food packaging material. The physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of formed films of various combinations were prepared at different concentrations, i.e., CH (0.5% w/v), AV (100%), CH:AV (75:25), and CH:AV (60:40). The results showed significant differences among all the prepared edible films wherein these differences were mainly on account of incorporating AV gel. The rheological and antioxidant properties of the formulations improved with the inclusion of AV gel. The films composed of CH:AV (60:40) positively affected the water solubility, thermal properties, and water vapour permeability of the edible films. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the films composed of CH:AV, (60:40) were amorphous and had smooth morphology. Further, the edible film solutions were applied to fresh figs (Ficus carica) to investigate their role in preserving fruits during storage. A significant reduction in microbial growth was found in coated fruits after 28 days of cold storage. The films composed of CH and AV showed overall improved results compared to the CH (0.5%, w/v). Therefore, the used formulations (CH:AV, 60:40) can form a sustainable film that has the potential to be utilized for fresh product preservation to maintain its quality and shelf life.

Abstract
Multi-active food packaging was prepared for strawberry fruit preservation where epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-containing pectin matrix and natamycin (NATA)-containing chitosan (CS) matrix were utilized to complete LBL electrostatic self-assembly. The results showed that the physicochemical properties of the multi-active packaging were closely related to the addition of NATA and EGCG. It was found that NATA and EGCG were embedded in the CS/pectin matrix through intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. The CN/PE 15 % multi-active films prepared based on the spectral stacking theory formed a barrier to UV light in the outer layer, exhibited excellent NATA protection under UV light exposure conditions at different times, and provided long-lasting and sustained bacterial inhibition in the inner layer. In addition, the CN/PE 15 % multi-active packaging extended the shelf life of strawberry at room temperature compared with the control samples. In conclusion, the developed CN/PE 15 % packaging provided potential applications for multi-active food packaging materials.

Abstract
The preparation of active packaging loaded with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and other functional agents has become a hot topic for food preservation in recent years. In this field, active fiber films based on spinning methods have attracted the interest of researchers owing to their high specific surface area, high porosity, high loading capacity, and good controlled release capacity. In the present work, neatly arranged ethyl cellulose (EC)/polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) fibrous films loaded with natamycin as an antimicrobial agent were prepared by microfluidic spinning. The encapsulation efficiency of natamycin was more than 90% in each group and the loading increased with increasing natamycin content. According to the characterization results of the natamycin-loaded EC/PVP fibrous films, hydrogen bonding was formed between natamycin and EC and PVP in the fibrous films. Meanwhile, the water contact angle of the fibrous films was increased, suggesting the improved hydrophobicity of the films. In the in vitro bacterial inhibition experiments, the active fiber films loaded with natamycin showed good antimicrobial activity, which could significantly inhibit the growth of gray mold. In conclusion, N-EC/PVP fibrous films with antimicrobial activity prepared by microfluidic spinning showed good potential in the field of active packaging.

Abstract
To tackle antimicrobial resistance, a global threat identified by the United Nations, is a common cause of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and is responsible for significant costs on healthcare systems, a substantial amount of research has been devoted to developing polysaccharide-based strategies that prevent bacterial attachment and biofilm formation on surfaces. Polysaccharides are essential building blocks for life and an abundant renewable resource that have attracted much attention due to their intrinsic remarkable biological potential antibacterial activities. If converted into efficient antibacterial coatings that could be applied to a broad range of surfaces and applications, polysaccharide-based coatings could have a significant potential global impact. However, the ultimate success of polysaccharide-based antibacterial materials will be determined by their potential for use in manufacturing processes that are scalable, versatile, and affordable. Therefore, in this review we focus on recent advances in polysaccharide-based antibacterial coatings from the perspective of fabrication methods. We first provide an overview of strategies for designing polysaccharide-based antimicrobial formulations and methods to assess the antibacterial properties of coatings. Recent advances on manufacturing polysaccharide-based coatings using some of the most common polysaccharides and fabrication methods are then detailed, followed by a critical comparative overview of associated challenges and opportunities for future developments. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Our review presents a timely perspective by being the first review in the field to focus on advances on polysaccharide-based antibacterial coatings from the perspective of fabrication methods along with an overview of strategies for designing polysaccharide-based antimicrobial formulations, methods to assess the antibacterial properties of coatings as well as a critical comparative overview of associated challenges and opportunities for future developments. Meanwhile this work is specifically targeted at an audience focused on featuring critical information and guidelines for developing polysaccharide-based coatings. Including such a complementary work in the journal could lead to further developments on polysaccharide antibacterial applications.

Abstract
In this study, gliadin-carboxymethyl chitosan composite nanoparticles (GC NPs) co-encapsulated natamycin (Nata) and theaflavins (TFs) were constructed and added as an antioxidant, antifungal, and structural enhancer to carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) films. The stabilized GC NPs with a particle size of 160.7 ± 2.8 nm, a zeta potential of -29.0 ± 0.9 mV, and a protein content in the supernatant of 96 ± 1 % could be fabricated. Tests of pH and salt ions showed that the stability of NPs dispersion was based on electrostatic repulsion. Co-encapsulation of TFs enhanced the photostability of Nata and the antioxidant activity of the NPs dispersion. The interactions between gliadin with Nata and TFs were studied by molecular simulations. As a functional additive, the addition of Nata/TFs-GC NPs could improve the optical properties, mechanical properties, water-blocking capability, and antifungal and antioxidant activities of the CMCS films. The in-vivo test showed that the functional film could be used to inhibit the growth of Aspergillus niger on cheese.

Abstract
Pectin and starch crystals were modified by ethyl gallate and octadecyl-trimethoxysilane, respectively, followed by using acylated pectin (AP) and alkylated starch crystals (ASCs) as bioactive reagents and hydrophobic enhancers to improve the physiochemical properties of gelatin-based films and evaluate their coating preservation effects on golden pomfret. The properties of AP and ASC were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), proton-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The ethyl-gallate-modified pectin/gelatin (AP/G) containing 3 % ASC (AP/G/ASC-3 %) was shown to have the maximum tensile strength and Young's modulus of all the tested composite films. The AP/G containing 10 % ASC exhibited a water contact angle higher than 94°, coupled with a significant improvement in UV-shielding efficiency. FTIR and SEM analysis of the AP/G/ASC-3 % film indicated that the molecular interactions in the composite film components were noncovalent linkages, including hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and electrostatic interactions, contributing to homogeneous and smooth microstructures. Additionally, the solutions of AP/G and AP/G/ASC composite films presented obvious antioxidant and antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, the AP/G and AP/G/ASC active coatings could effectively inhibit lipid oxidation and improve the textural acceptability of golden pomfret (Trachinotus blochii) fillets during 4 °C storage.

Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of incorporating grape seed oil (GSO) nanoemulsion (NE) at varying concentrations into the film matrix on the physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of the resulting films. In this study, ultrasonic treatment was used to prepare GSO-NE, and different levels (2, 4, and 6 %) of nanoemulsioned GSO were incorporated into gelatin (Ge)/sodium alginate (SA)-based films to produce films with improved physical and antibacterial properties. The results revealed that incorporation of GSO-NE at 6 % concentration decreased the tensile strength (TS) and puncture force (PF) significantly (p < 0.05). The whiteness index (WI) of the films decreased from 63.4 to 47.79, while the total color change (ΔE) increased significantly (p < 0.05) with the increase in GSO-NE concentration. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed that GSO-NE at different concentrations had improved the thermal stability of Ge/SA-based films. The incorporation of GSO-NE into the films led to the formation of a slightly porous structure. The incorporation of GSO-NE at 4 and 6 % concentrations decreased the water vapor permeability (WVP), moisture content (MC) %, and water solubility (WS) % significantly (p < 0.05). All composite films exhibited hydrophobic surfaces with contact angles θ > 90°. Ge/SA/GSO-NE films were found to be effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The prepared active films containing GSO-NE had a high potential for preventing food spoilage in food packaging.

Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to synthesize and characterize Persian gum-based hydrogel composited with gentamicin (Gen)-loaded natural zeolite (Clinoptilolite) and to evaluate its biological properties. Clinoptilolite (CLN) was decorated with Gen, and the conjugation was confirmed using computational and experimental assessments. The Monte Carlo adsorption locator module was used to reveal the physicochemical nature of the adsorption processes of Gen on CLN and ALG and gum on Gen@ CLN in Materials Studio 2017 software. Based on the high negative results, the adsorption process was found to be endothermic in all studied cases, and the interaction energies were in the range of physisorption for Gen on CLN and ALG and gum on Gen@CLN. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential analysis showed that the size of pristine CLN was around 2959 nm and the conjugation decreased the size significantly to approximately 932 nm. The hydrogel characterizations showed that the Gen-decorated CLNs are homogenously dispersed into the hydrogel matrix, and the resultant hydrogels have a porous structure with interconnected pores. The release kinetics evaluation showed that around 80 % of Gen was released from the nanocomposite drug during the first 10 h. In vitro studies revealed hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility of the nanocomposite. Microbial assessments indicated dose-dependent antibacterial activity of the hydrogel against gram (+) and gram (-) bacteria. The results showed that the fabricated hydrogel nanocomposite exhibits favorable physicochemical and biological properties.
