Chitosan, a biodegradable and non-toxic polysaccharide derived from chitin, has shown remarkable potential in seed treatment due to its bioactive properties. The review discusses the mechanisms of chitosan's effect on plant germination including promoting water uptake, enhancing nutrient absorption, and protecting seeds from biotic and abiotic stresses. Moreover, it evaluates the effects of chitosan on plant growth parameters such as root development, shoot growth, chlorophyll content, and overall yield. The review also discusses the sustainable aspects of chitosan coatings in agriculture, emphasizing their eco-friendly nature and potential for reducing reliance on synthetic chemicals. Exploitation of functionalized green nanomaterials for plant disease management

A crucial determining factor in agricultural productivity is biotic stress. In addition, supply of quality food to the ever-increasing world's population has raised the food demand tremendously. Therefore, enhanced agricultural crop productivity is the only option to mitigate these concerns. It ultimately demanded the often and indiscriminate use of synthetic agrochemicals such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, etc. for the management of various biotic stresses including a variety of plant pathogens. However, the food chain and biosphere are severely impacted due to the use of such harmful agrochemicals and their byproducts. Hence, it is need of hour to search for novel, effective and ecofriendly approaches for the management of biotic stresses in crop plants. Particularly, in plant disease management, efforts are being made to take advantage of newly emerged science i.e. nanotechnology for the creation of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) such as metallic, oxide, sulphide, etc. through different routes and their application in plant disease management. Among these, green nanomaterials which are synthesized using environmentally friendly methods and materials reported to possess unique properties (such as high surface area, adjustable size and shape, and specific functionalities) making them ideal candidates for targeted disease control. Nanotechnology can stop crop losses by managing specific diseases from soil, plants, and hydroponic systems. This review mainly focuses on the application of biologically produced green NPs in the treatment of plant diseases caused due to bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The utilization of green synthesis of NPs in the creation of intelligent targeted pesticide and biomolecule control delivery systems, for disease management is considered environmentally friendly due to its pursuit of less hazardous, sustainable, and environmentally friendly methods.

Bio-formulated chitosan nanoparticles enhance disease resistance against rice blast by physiomorphic, transcriptional, and microbiome modulation of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Rice blast disease (RBD) caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, threaten food security by cutting agricultural output. Nano agrochemicals are now perceived as sustainable, cost-effective alternatives to traditional pesticides. This study investigated bioformulation of moringa chitosan nanoparticles (M-CsNPs) and their mechanisms for suppressing RBD while minimizing toxic effects on the microenvironment. M-CsNPs, sized 46 nm with semi-spherical morphology, significantly suppressed pathogen growth, integrity, and colonization at 200 mg L-1in vitro. Greenhouse tests with foliar exposure to the same concentration resulted in a substantial 77.7 % reduction in RBD, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity and plant health. Furthermore, M-CsNPs improved photosynthesis, gas exchange, and the nutritional profile of diseased rice plants. RNA-seq analysis highlighted upregulated defense-related genes in treated rice plants. Metagenomic study showcased reshaping of the rice microbiome, reducing Magnaporthe abundance by 93.5 %. Both healthy and diseased rice plants showed increased microbial diversity, particularly favoring specific beneficial species Thiobacillus, Nitrospira, Nocardioides, and Sphingomicrobium in the rhizosphere and Azonexus, Agarivorans, and Bradyrhizobium in the phyllosphere. This comprehensive study unravels the diverse mechanisms by which M-CsNPs interact with plants and pathogens, curbing M. oryzae damage, promoting plant growth, and modulating the rice microbiome. It underscores the significant potential for effective plant disease management.

Medicinal and chemosensing applications of chitosan based material: A review

Chitosan (CTS), has emerged as a highly intriguing biopolymer with widespread applications, drawing significant attention in various fields ranging from medicinal to chemosensing. Key characteristics of chitosan include solubility, biocompatibility, biodegradability and reactivity, making it versatile in numerous sectors. Several derivatives have been documented for their diverse therapeutic properties, such as antibacterial, antifungal, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant activities. Furthermore, these compounds serve as highly sensitive and selective chemosensor for the detection of various analytes such as heavy metal ions, anions and various other species in agricultural, environmental and biological matrixes. CTS derivatives interacting with these species and give analytical signals. In this review, we embark on an exploration of the latest advancements in CTS-based materials, emphasizing their noteworthy contributions to medicinal chemistry spanning the years from 2021 to 2023. The intrinsic biological and physiological properties of CTS make it an ideal platform for designing materials that interact seamlessly with biological systems. The review also explores the utilization of chitosan-based materials for the development of colorimetric and fluorimetric chemosensors capable of detecting metal ions, anions and various other species, contributing to advancements in environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, and industrial processes.

Structure, the energy, sorption and biological properties of chiral salts of chitosan with l- and d-ascorbic acid

The influence of l- and d-ascorbic acid diastereomers on the structure, supramolecular ordering, energy, sorption and biological properties of heterochiral (D-L) and homochiral (D-D) salt complexes of chitosan (d-glucan)-acid was studied. The thermal effect of dissolving chitosan in l-ascorbic acid and the protonation degree of (D-L)-salts were lower than those in the medium of the d-isomer. Homochiral (D-D) salts, in contrast to heterochiral (D-L) ones, are distinguished by a more developed system of intermolecular and intramolecular contacts, a more ordered and equilibrium supramolecular organization of macrochains, a higher crystallinity degree, and a smaller amount of crystallization water. The sorption isotherms of chiral salts were approximated by the thermal equation of sorption and the superposition of the Langmuir and Flory-Huggins isotherms. Significant differences were found in the limiting value and energy of sorption, the constant of adsorption equilibrium, the limiting sorption capacity of the localized mode of water, and the Gibbs mixing energy. Biotesting on non-vascular (Scenedesmus quadricauda) and vascular eukaryotes (Linum usitatissimum) revealed the growth-stimulating effect of the D-D salts. The obtained results confirm our hypothesis of the homochiral salt complexes d-glucan-d-ascorbic acid best corresponding to the principles of the functional organization of biological objects.

Characterization and Antioxidant Activity of the Polysaccharide Hydrolysate from Lactobacillus plantarum LPC-1 and Their Effect on Spinach (Spinach oleracea L.) Growth

This study presents a comparison between two hydrolysis systems (MnO2/H2O2 and ascorbic acid (VC)/H2O2) for the depolymerization of exopolysaccharide (EPS) from Lactobacillus plantarum LPC-1. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize these two degradation systems, resulting in two H2O2-free degradation products, MEPS (MnO2/H2O2-treated EPS) and VEPS (VC/H2O2-treated EPS), where H2O2 residues in the final products and their antioxidant activity were considered vital points. The relationship between the structural variations of two degraded polysaccharides and their antioxidant activity was characterized. Physicochemical tests showed that H2O2 had a notable impact on determining the total and reducing sugars in the polysaccharides, and both degradation systems efficiently eliminated this effect. After optimization, the average molecular weight of EPS was reduced from 265.75 kDa to 135.41 kDa (MEPS) and 113.11 kDa (VEPS), improving its antioxidant properties. Characterization results showed that the two hydrolysis products had similar major functional groups and monosaccharide composition as EPS. The crystal structure, main chain length, and branched chain number were crucial factors affecting the biological activity of polysaccharides. In pot testing, two degraded polysaccharides improved spinach quality more than EPS due to their lower molecular weights, suggesting the advantages of low-molecular-weight polysaccharides. In summary, these two degradation techniques offer valuable insights for further expanding the utilization of microbial resources.

Chitosan-induced biotic stress tolerance and crosstalk with phytohormones, antioxidants, and other signalling molecules

Several polysaccharides augment plant growth and productivity and galvanise defence against pathogens. Such elicitors have ecological superiority over traditional growth regulators, considering their amplified biocompatibility, biodegradability, bioactivity, non-toxicity, ubiquity, and inexpensiveness. Chitosan is a chitin-derived polysaccharide that has recently been spotlighted among plant scientists. Chitosan supports plant growth and development and protects against microbial entities such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, and insects. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge of chitosan's antimicrobial and insecticidal potential with recent updates. These effects are further explored with the possibilities of chitosan's active correspondence with phytohormones such as jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), indole acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), and gibberellic acid (GA). The stress-induced redox shift in cellular organelles could be substantiated by the intricate participation of chitosan with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant metabolism, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD). Furthermore, we propose how chitosan could be intertwined with cellular signalling through Ca2+, ROS, nitric oxide (NO), transcription factors (TFs), and defensive gene activation.
