Preparation and comparison of dialdehyde derivatives of polysaccharides as cross-linking agents

Effect of sodium alginate block type on the physicochemical properties and curcumin release behavior of quaternized chitosan-oxidized sodium alginate Schiff base hydrogels

Controlling bioactive ingredients release by modulating the 3D network structure of cross-linked hydrogels is important for functional food development. Hereby, oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) with varying aldehyde contents was formed by periodate oxidation of sodium alginate (SA) with different β-d-mannuronic acid (M) and α-l-guluronic acid (G) ratios (M/G = 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1) and its structure was characterized. Moreover, hydrogels were prepared via Schiff base and electrostatic interactions between quaternized chitosan (QCS) and OSA. The properties of hydrogels such as microstructure, thermal stability, swelling and controlled release were investigated. The results showed that OSA with M/G = 1:2 had the highest content of aldehyde groups, and the hydrogel formed by it and QCS had higher thermal stability and a denser network structure with the lowest equilibrium swelling rate, which could better control the release of curcumin. Additionally, it had good self-healing and can recover rapidly after the rupture of its network structure.

Acellular dermal matrix in urethral reconstruction

The management of severe urethral stricture has always posed a formidable challenge. Traditional approaches such as skin flaps, mucosal grafts, and urethroplasty may not be suitable for lengthy and intricate strictures. In the past two decades, tissue engineering solutions utilizing acellular dermal matrix have emerged as potential alternatives. Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is a non-immunogenic biological collagen scaffold that has demonstrated its ability to induce layer-by-layer tissue regeneration. The application of ADM in urethral reconstruction through tissue engineering has become a practical endeavor. This article provides an overview of the preparation, characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of ADM along with its utilization in urethral reconstruction via tissue engineering.

Recent advances on the preparation conditions, structural characteristics, physicochemical properties, functional properties and potential applications of dialdehyde starch: A review

Starch, a natural storage polysaccharide of plant kingdom, has many industrial applications. However, native starch has some inherent shortages, which can be overcome by structural modification. Dialdehyde starch, one kind of oxidized starch produced by periodate oxidation, has good physical properties and bioactivities with wide applications in different fields. Dialdehyde starch is typically achieved by oxidizing native starch slurry through periodate oxidation under controlled reaction conditions. Several factors including the source of starch, the type of oxidant, the molar ratio of oxidant to starch, reaction temperature, reaction time and solution pH value can influence the synthesis of dialdehyde starch. Dialdehyde starch shows different spectroscopic/chromatographic characters and physicochemical properties from native starch. Moreover, dialdehyde starch exhibits good antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity and cross-linking property. Based on these functional properties, dialdehyde starch has shown application potentials in food packaging, thermoplastic production, enzyme immobilization, heavy metal ion adsorption, drug delivery, wood adhesion and leather tanning. In this review, the preparation conditions, structural characteristics, physicochemical properties, functional properties and potential applications of dialdehyde starch are summarized for the first time. The future research and development prospects of dialdehyde starch are also discussed.

Advances in chitosan-based hydrogels for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications: A comprehensive review

The treatment of diseases, such as cancer, is one of the most significant issues correlated with human beings health. Hydrogels (HGs) prepared from biocompatible and biodegradable materials, especially biopolymers, have been effectively employed for the sort of pharmaceutical and biomedical applications, including drug delivery systems, biosensors, and tissue engineering. Chitosan (CS), one of the most abundant bio-polysaccharide derived from chitin, is an efficient biomaterial in the prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. CS-based HGs possess some potential advantages, like high values of bioactive encapsulation, efficient drug delivery to a target site, sustained drug release, good biocompatibility and biodegradability, high serum stability, non-immunogenicity, etc., which made them practical and useful for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. In this review, we summarize recent achievements and advances associated with CS-based HGs for drug delivery, regenerative medicine, disease detection and therapy.

Dialdehyde carbohydrates - Advanced functional materials for biomedical applications

Dialdehyde carbohydrates (DCs) have found applications in a wide range of biomedical field due to their great versatility, biocompatibility/biodegradability, biological properties, and controllable chemical/physical characteristics. The presence of dialdehyde groups in carbohydrate structure allows cross-linking of DCs to form versatile architectures serving as interesting matrices for biomedical applications (e.g., drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine). Recently, DCs have noticeably contributed to the development of diverse physical forms of advanced functional biomaterials i.e., bulk architectures (hydrogels, films/coatings, or scaffolds) and nano/-micro formulations. We underline here the current scientific knowledge on DCs, and demonstrate their potential and newly developed biomedical applications. Specifically, an update on the synthesis approach and functional/bioactive attributes is provided, and the selected in vitro/in vivo studies are reviewed comprehensively as examples of the latest progress in the field. Moreover, safety concerns, challenges, and perspectives towards the application of DCs are deliberated.

Novel Biomass-Based Polymeric Dyes: Preparation and Performance Assessment in the Dyeing of Biomass-Derived Aldehyde-Tanned Leather

High-performance chrome-free leather production is currently one of the most concerning needs to warrant the sustainable development of the leather industry due to the serious chrome pollution. Driven by these research challenges, this work explores using biobased polymeric dyes (BPDs) based on dialdehyde starch and reactive small-molecule dye (reactive red 180, RD-180) as novel dyeing agents for leather tanned using a chrome-free, biomass-derived aldehyde tanning agent (BAT). FTIR, ¹H NMR, XPS, and UV-visible spectrometry analyses indicated that a Schiff base structure was generated between the aldehyde group of dialdehyde starch (DST) and the amino group of RD-180, resulting in the successful load of RD-180 on DST to produce BPD. The BPD could first penetrate the BAT-tanned leather efficiently and then be deposited on the leather matrix, thus exhibiting a high uptake ratio. Compared with the crust leathers prepared using a conventional anionic dye (CAD), dyeing, and RD-180 dyeing, the BPD-dyed crust leather not only had better coloring uniformity and fastness but it also showed a higher tensile strength, elongation at break, and fullness. These data suggest that BPD has the potential to be used as a novel sustainable polymeric dye for the high-performance dyeing of organically tanned chrome-free leather, which is paramount to ensuring and promoting the sustainable development of the leather industry.
