UV-blocking biodegradable film based on flaxseed mucilage/pectin impregnated with titanium dioxide and calcium chloride for food packaging applications

Three-birds-with-one-stone: An eco-friendly and renewable humic acid-derived material application strategy for macrolide antibiotic detection and multifunctional composite film preparation

This research proposes a simple and novel strategy for the green detection of antibiotics along with the reduction of microplastic and humic acid (HA) hazards. The entire process is based on a single-step solvent-sieving method to separate HA into insoluble (IHA) and soluble (SHA) components, subsequently recombining and designing the application according to the original characteristics of selected fractions in accordance with the zero-waste principle. IHA was applied as a dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) sorbent without chemical modification for the enrichment of trace MACs in complex biological matrices. The recovery of MACs was 74.06-100.84 % in the range of 2.5-1000 μg∙kg-1. Furthermore, SHA could be combined with biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare multifunctional composite films. SHA endows the PVA film with favorable mechanical properties, excellent UV shielding as well as oxidation resistance performance. Compared with pure PVA, the tensile strength, toughness, antioxidant and UV-protection properties were increased to 157.3 Mpa, 258.6 MJ·m-3, 78.6 % and 60 % respectively. This study achieved a green and economically valuable utilization of all components of waste HA, introduced a novel approach for monitoring and controlling harmful substances and reducing white pollution. This has significant implications for promoting sustainable development and recovering valuable resources.

Recent advances in reinforced bioplastics for food packaging - A critical review

Recently, diversifying the material, method, and application in food packaging has been massively developed to find more environment-friendly materials. However, the mechanical and barrier properties of the bioplastics are major hurdles to expansion in commercial realization. The compositional variation with the inclusion of different fillers could resolve the lacking performance of the bioplastic. This review summarizes the various reinforcement fillers and their effect on bioplastic development. In this review, we first discussed the status of bioplastics and their definition, advantages, and limitations regarding their performance in the food packaging application. Further, the overview of different fillers and development methods has been discussed thoroughly. The application of reinforced bioplastic for food packaging and its effect on food quality and shelf life are highlighted. The environmental issues, health concerns, and future perspectives of the reinforced bioplastic are also discussed at the end of the manuscript. Adding different fillers into the bioplastic improves physical, mechanical, barrier, and active properties, which render the required protective functions to replace conventional plastic for food packaging applications. Various fillers, such as natural and chemically synthesized, could be incorporated into the bioplastic, and their overall properties improve significantly for the food packaging application.

Unveiling the potential of linseed mucilage, its health benefits, and applications in food packaging

Industrial waste products derived from the oil industry often contain valuable substances and elements with great potential. These by-products can be used for various purposes, including as nutrients, bioactive compounds, fuels, and polymers. Linseed mucilage (LM) is one such example of a beneficial by-product obtained from linseed. It possesses favorable chemical and functional properties, depending on its method of extraction. Different pretreatments, such as enzymatic extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, pulse electric field, and ultrasound-assisted extraction, have been explored by various researchers to enhance both the yield and quality of mucilage. Furthermore, LM has exhibited therapeutic effects in the treatment of obesity, diabetes, constipation, hyperlipidemia, cancer, and other lifestyle diseases. Additionally, it demonstrates favorable functional characteristics that make it suitable to be used in bioplastic production. These properties preserve food quality, prolong shelf life, and confer antimicrobial activity. It also has the potential to be used as a packaging material, especially considering the increasing demand for sustainable and biodegradable alternatives to plastics because of their detrimental impact on environmental health. This review primarily focuses on different extraction techniques used for linseed mucilage, its mechanism of action in terms of health benefits, and potential applications in food packaging.

Fluorescence and pectinase double-triggered chitosan/pectin/calcium propionate/curcumin-β-cyclodextrin complex film for pork freshness monitoring and maintenance

An intelligent and active food packaging film based on chitosan (CS), pectin (P), calcium propionate (CP), and curcumin-β-cyclodextrin complex (Cur-β-CD) was prepared. The CS/P/CP/Cur-β-CD film exhibited improved hydrophobicity (74.78 ± 0.53°), water vapor (4.55 ± 0.16 × 10-11 g·(m·s·Pa)-1), and oxygen (1.50 ± 0.06 × 10-12 g·(m·s·Pa)-1) barrier properties, as well as antioxidant (72.34 ± 3.79 % for DPPH and 86.05 ± 0.14 % for ABTS) and antibacterial (79.41 ± 2.89 % for E. coli and 83.82 ± 3.96 % for S. aureus) activities. The release of CP and Cur could be triggered by pectinase, with their cumulative release reaching 92.62 ± 1.20 % and 42.24 ± 1.15 %, respectively. The CS/P/CP/Cur-β-CD film showed delayed alterations in surface color, pH value, total volatile bases nitrogen, total viable counts, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance, hardness, and springiness of pork. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity of the film gradually decreased. In conclusion, we have developed a pH-responsive film with pectinase-triggered release function, providing a new concept for the design of multi-signal responsive intelligent food packaging.
