Abstract
IMPORTANCE The prevalence of obesity among United States adults has increased from 30.5% in 1999 to 41.9% in 2020. However, despite the recognition of long-term weight gain as an important public health issue, there is a paucity of studies studying the long-term weight gain and building models for long-term projection. METHODS A retrospective, cross-sectional cohort study using the publicly available National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2017-2020) was conducted in patients who completed the weight questionnaire and had accurate data for both weight at time of survey and weight ten years ago. Multistate gradient boost modeling classifiers were used to generate covariate dependent transition matrices and Markov chains were utilized for multistate modeling. RESULTS Of the 6146 patients that met the inclusion criteria, 3024 (49%) of patients were male and 3122 (51%) of patients were female. There were 2252 (37%) White patients, 1257 (20%) Hispanic patients, 1636 (37%) Black patients, and 739 (12%) Asian patients. The average BMI was 30.16 (SD = 7.15), the average weight was 83.67 kilos (SD = 22.04), and the average weight change was a 3.27 kg (SD = 14.97) increase in body weight (Fig. 1). A total of 2411 (39%) patients lost weight, and 3735 (61%) patients gained weight (Table 1). We observed that 87 (1%) of patients were underweight (BMI < 18.5), 2058 (33%) were normal weight (18.5 ≤ BMI < 25), 1376 (22%) were overweight (25 ≤ BMI < 30) and 2625 (43%) were obese (BMI > 30). From analysis of the transitions between normal/underweight, overweight, and obese, we observed that after 10 years, of the patients who were underweight, 65% stayed underweight, 32% became normal weight, 2% became overweight, and 2% became obese. After 10 years, of the patients who were normal weight, 3% became underweight, 78% stayed normal weight, 17% became overweight, and 2% became obese. Of the patients who were overweight, 71% stayed overweight, 0% became underweight, 14% became normal weight, and 15% became obese. Of the patients who were obese, 84% stayed obese, 0% became underweight, 1% became normal weight, and 14% became overweight. CONCLUSIONS United States adults are at risk of transitioning from normal weight to becoming overweight or obese. Covariate dependent Markov chains constructed with gradient boost modeling can effectively generate long-term predictions.

Abstract
Aim To evaluate the performances of D-dimer, prothrombin time (PT), and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) for the diagnosis of coronary artery lesion (CAL) in acute stage Kawasaki disease (KD). Methods Between January 2018 and January 2021, a total of 102 children with acute stage KD were included in this retrospective study. Among them, 36 KD children with CAL were divided into the CAL group, and 66 KD children without CAL were divided into the NCAL group. Independent predictors of CAL in acute stage KD were identified by using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Spearman correlations were used to evaluate the association between CAL in acute stage KD and different indicators. The diagnostic performance of different indicators for CAL in acute stage KD was analyzed by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results Compared with the NCAL group, children in the CAL group had significantly higher white blood cell count, lymphocyte count, platelet count, D-dimer, and RDW levels, but lower PT levels (all p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that D-dimer (OR = 1.0, 95% CI: 1.004-1.012, p < 0.001), PT (OR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2-0.8, p = 0.01), and RDW (OR = 7.0, 95% CI: 2.6-19.2, p < 0.001) were independent predictors of CAL in children with acute stage KD. CAL showed a positive correlation with D-dimer (r = 0.4, p < 0.001) and RDW (r = 0.5, p < 0.001), and had a negative association with PT (r = -0.2, p < 0.05). The ROC curve analysis showed that the combination of the three indicators had the highest diagnostic performance for CAL in acute stage KD with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.922 (sensitivity, 86.1%; specificity, 89.4%), compared with D-dimer (AUC = 0.736), PT (AUC = 0.640), and RDW (AUC = 0.819) alone. Conclusion A combination of D-dimer, PT, and RDW may help predict CAL in children with acute stage KD.

Abstract
High red blood distribution width (RDW) is associated with decreased red blood cell deformability, and high neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a biomarker of systemic inflammation and innate-adaptive immune system imbalance. Both RDW and NLR are predictors of chronic disease risk and mortality. Omega-3 index (O3I) values have previously been shown to be inversely associated with RDW and NLR levels. Our objective was to determine if total plasma long chain omega-3 fatty acids (Omega3%) measured in the UK Biobank cohort were associated with RDW and NLR values. RDW- and NLR- relationships with Omega3% were characterized in 109,191 adults (58.4% female). RDW- and NLR-Omega3% relationships were inversely associated with Omega3% (both p < 0.0001). These cross-sectional associations confirm previous findings that increasing RDW and NLR values are associated with low O3I. The hypothesis that RDW and/or NLR values can be reduced in individuals with less-than optimal long chain omega 3 values need to be tested in randomized controlled intervention trials using EPA and/or DHA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related reduction in exercise capacity is manifested by a rapid development of fatigue. Research confirmed the adverse prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW-CV), an independent factor in heart failure, coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction. Physical exercise improves and helps to maintain cardiorespiratory fitness. The aim of our study was to examine the impact of 8 weeks' Nordic walking training with classic poles (NW) and NW training with poles with an integrated resistance shock absorber (NW with RSA) on RDW-CV levels and to assess correlations between RDW-CV levels and cardiorespiratory performance in postmenopausal women. METHODS In this study, 32 postmenopausal women (NW-16, NW with RSA-16) participated in eight weeks of walking training. The mean age of women was 66.56 ± 4.23 year. and BMI 26.99 ± 3.86 kg/m2. At the beginning and at the end of the study, spirometry and exercise tests were performed. Haematological parameters were determined in the venous blood. RESULTS Statistical analysis of differences in post-training changes in the parameters between the groups studied showed a significant difference in change in body weight (∆body weight) (p < 0.05; ES: 0.778), BMI (∆BMI) (p < 0.05; ES: 0.778), waist circumference (∆WC) (p < 0.05; ES: 1.225) and (∆RDW-SD) (p < 0.05; ES: 1.215). There were no changes in electrocardiographic and spirometric parameters. CONCLUSIONS Based on the findings from the present study, it can be assumed that endurance and resistance exercise can significantly reduce disease severity and mortality. A clinical analysis of RDW levels, together with other cardiological and biochemical parameters, can provide practical prognostic information relating to cardiovascular disease, mortality risk and treatment outcomes.

Abstract
BackgroundRed blood cell distribution width (RDW) is considered to be related to coronary heart disease and heart failure and all-cause mortality, but its relationship with acute ischemic stroke is still unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between RDW and the stroke severity and functional outcomes of ischemic stroke.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed patients with acute ischemic stroke between September 2016 and January 2020. Demographic, clinical, stroke complications, laboratory data, and treatment were collected for all patients. Stroke severity and functional outcomes were evaluated by NIHSS score, modified Rankin Scale (mRS), and Barthel Index (BI) at 3 months. Furthermore, multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between RDW and stroke severity and functional outcomes.ResultsA total of 629 patients with acute ischemic stroke were included and were categorized into four groups according to the quartiles of RDW (< 12.4, 12.4–12.9, 13.0–13.4, > 13.4). After multivariable analysis, higher RDW was directly associated with moderate to severe stroke (OR 2.21, 95% CI, 1.30–3.75, P = 0.003), mRS score of 3–6 at 3 months (OR 1.86, 95% CI, 1.02–3.41, P = 0.044), and BI score below 85 at 3 months (OR 2.27, 95% CI, 1.25–4.12, P = 0.007) in patients with ischemic stroke.ConclusionOur results demonstrate that RDW is associated with stroke severity and unfavorable functional outcomes at 3 months in patients with ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of erythrocyte size variability. Recent studies have shown that RDW is a predictive, and prognostic marker of mortality and cardiovascular (CVD) events in the general population and in CVD patients. This study aimed to investigate the association between RDW and CVD risk in a large sample of adults. A subsample of CVD free participants of the ELSA-Brasil cohort were included (n=4,481). In the cross-sectional approach, multiple regression analysis was used to investigate the association between RDW and the Framingham Risk Score (FRS). Linear mixed effect model evaluated whether baseline RDW predicted changes in CVD risk after about four-year follow up. Cross-sectional analysis showed that RDW was independently associated with FRS, participants in the fourth-quartile of RDW distribution had a 29% higher FRS than those in the first-quartile RDW (p<0.001). A longitudinal analysis revealed that RDW remained associated with increased FRS. In this large cohort of adult Brazilians, RDW was independently associated with increased CVD risk, as measured by the FRS, both at baseline and after four-year follow-up. However, RDW did not predict change in CVD risk in this short-term follow up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Red cell distribution width (RDW), an index for variation of red blood cell (RBC) size, has been proposed as a potential marker for poorer outcomes in several aging-related diseases and conditions. We tested whether greater variability of RBC size, presented as a higher RDW value, predicts poor prognoses among hospitalized patients over 60 years old. METHODS We retrospectively collected data from older hospitalized patients aged ≥60 years between January 2013 to December 2017 at Sutter Health, a large integrated health system in Northern California. The RDW was measured during hospital admission and categorized with 1% intervals (≤13.9, 14.0-14.9, 15.0-15.9, 16.0-16.9, 17.0-17.9 and ≥18.0%). The primary outcome was the rate of in-hospital mortality and secondary outcomes included 30-day re-admission rate and length of hospital stay (in days). RESULTS A total of 167,292 admissions from 94,617 patients were included. The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 6.3%. As the RDW value increased, the rate of in-hospital mortality gradually increased from 2.7% for the lowest RDW category to 12.2% in the highest category (p-trend <0.001). The overall 30-day re-admission rate after discharge was 12.5% and the rate of 30-day re-admission also increased with increasing RDW categories (7.4% in the lowest group vs. 15.8% in the highest group, p-trend <0.001). Patients with the highest RDW values at admission stayed 1.5-2.0 times longer in the hospital than patients with lower RDW values who were admitted for the same causes. CONCLUSIONS Greater variability of RBC size is significantly associated with worse prognosis in hospitalized elderly patients, indicating higher mortality, greater risk of early re-admission, and longer hospital stay days. Risk stratification strategies for hospitalized elderly should include RDW value.

Abstract
Background The hemoglobin level and red cell distribution width (RDW) have been linked to the prognosis of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CAHD). However, the relationship between the ratio of hemoglobin to the RDW (HRR) and clinical outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is not known. Here, we explored the impact of the HRR on clinical outcomes after PCI. Methods In our study, we selected 6,046 CAHD patients with PCI hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from 2008 to 2016. The patients were grouped according to their HRR ratio: group A (HRR < 10.25, n = 2,344) and group B (HRR ≥ 10.25, n = 3,702). The difference in clinical outcomes between the two groups was compared. Patients were followed up for 35.9 ± 22.6 months. Results Three hundred nine patients died during follow-up. These included 166 patients (7.1%) in the HRR < 10.25 group and 143 patients (3.9%) in the HRR ≥ 10.25 group (P < 0.001). The incidences of cardiogenic death (5.7 vs. 3.2%) and major cardiovascular adverse events (16.5 vs. 12.9%) also differed significantly between the groups (both Ps < 0.001). Analysis using the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model found a significant association between a decreased HRR and post-PCI mortality (all-cause death, adjusted HR: 1.479, 95% CI: 1.156–1.893, p = 0.002; cardiac death, adjusted HR: 1.470, 95% CI: 1.116–1.936, p = 0.006). Conclusion The HRR is predictive of post-PCI mortality among CAHD patients.

Abstract
A comprehensive analysis of clinical information in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) was performed to clarify the clinical characteristics of geriatric LBP from the perspective of body composition, spinal alignment, and blood findings related to senescence. We enrolled 203 patients with an average age of 79.0 years (77 men and 126 women), with non-specific CLBP as a single-center prospective cohort study, the patients were compared with age- and sex-matched controls without CLBP using a propensity score-matching. We performed laboratory analysis, radiographic evaluations for global spinal parameter and lumbar degeneration, and body composition analysis using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We observed a higher red blood cell distribution width (RDW) (p < 0.001), which is an index of aging, as well as a lower vitamin D level (p = 0.002), skeletal muscle mass index (p = 0.045) and a higher fat mass (p = 0.007) in patients with CLBP. Moreover, patients with geriatric CLBP had significantly lower lumbar lordosis (p = 0.024), and higher sagittal vertical axis (p = 0.006) was correlated with lower extremity and trunk muscle mass (p < 0.001), independent of lumbar degeneration. Geriatric patients with CLBP have sarcopenic fat accumulation and spinal sagittal malalignment with senescent status, such as elevated RDW and hypovitaminosis D.

Abstract
Low red blood cell (RBC) membrane content of EPA and DHA, i.e., the omega-3 index (O3I), and elevated RBC distribution width (RDW) are risk factors for all-cause mortality. O3I and RDW are related with membrane fluidity and deformability. Our objective was to determine if there is a relationship between O3I and RDW in healthy adults. Subjects without inflammation or anemia, and with values for O3I, RDW, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), body mass index (BMI), age and sex were identified (n = 25,485) from a clinical laboratory dataset of > 45,000 individuals. RDW was inversely associated with O3I in both sexes before and after (both p < 0.00001) adjusting models for sex, age, BMI and CRP. Stratification by sex revealed a sex-O3I interaction with the RDW-O3I slope (p < 0.00066) being especially steep in females with O3I ≤ 5.6%. In healthy adults of both sexes, the data suggested that an O3I of > 5.6% may help maintain normal RBC structural and functional integrity.

Abstract
Red cell distribution width (RDW) serves as an independent predictor towards the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A systematic search of databases such as PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane library was performed on October 10th, 2019, to elaborate the relationship between RDW and in hospital and long term follow up, all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and development of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients with CAD undergoing PCI. Twenty-one studies qualified this strict selection criterion (number of patients = 56,425): one study was prospective, and the rest were retrospective cohorts. Our analysis showed that patients undergoing PCI with high RDW had a significantly higher risk of in-hospital all-cause mortality (OR 2.41), long-term all-cause mortality (OR 2.44), cardiac mortality (OR 2.65), MACE (OR: 2.16), and odds of developing CIN (OR: 1.42) when compared to the patients with low RDW. Therefore, incorporating RDW in the predictive models for the development of CIN, MACE, and mortality can help in triage to improve the outcomes in coronary artery disease patients who undergo PCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between RBC distribution width (RDW) and in-hospital mortality, length of hospitalization, and leukocyte count in critically ill dogs. DESIGN Retrospective study. SETTING University teaching hospital. ANIMALS One hundred and twenty-seven dogs admitted to the ICU from December 2016 to April 2017. Patients were included if they had a CBC performed within the first 24 h of admission. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 29% (37/127), and median length of hospital stay was 3 days (interquartile range [IQR], 5). The median RDW value was 13.8% (IQR, 1.6%; reference interval, 11.9%-14.5 %). The canine Acute Patient Physiologic and Laboratory Evaluation (APPLE) fast score was calculated in 81 of 127 (64%) patients; the median score was 24/50 (IQR, 9). There was no significant correlation between RDW and APPLE fast score (P = 0.163). Subgroup analysis was performed according to the following diagnostic categories: abdominal (36%; 46/127), hematological (13%; 16/127), respiratory (13%; 16/127), neurological (12%; 15/127), cardiovascular (11%; 14/127), integument (3%; 4/127), trauma (3%; 4/127), musculoskeletal (2%; 3/127), and others (7%; 9/127). Increased RDW was not associated with in-hospital mortality overall (P = 0.381) or in any individual subgroup analysis. No association was found between length of hospitalization and RDW values in either survivors (P = 0.548) or nonsurvivors (P = 0.083). The correlation between RDW and leukocyte count was nonsignificant (P = 0.12). CONCLUSIONS In this study, admission RDW was not associated with in-hospital mortality or length of hospitalization in critically ill dogs. The correlation between RDW and leukocyte count was nonsignificant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a novel marker of inflammation. Emerging studies have evaluated the relationship of NLR with cardiovascular diseases and malignant conditions. However, rare studies regarded the association between NLR and long-term health status. This study aimed to evaluate the association of NLR with all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality among adults in the United States. METHODS We obtained eight cycles data of National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) from 1999 to 2014, and enrolled 32328 participants after certain screening. By weighted chi-square test and linear regression analysis, we analyzed the correlation between NLR and baseline characteristics of the participants. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression models were used to assess the survival relevance of NLR. We conducted stratified analysis, interaction analysis, and sensitivity analysis to robustness of our results. RESULTS Participants with high NLR levels had a higher risk of death. After adjustment for baseline characteristics, the hazard ratio comparing the higher vs lower NLR levels was 1.43 (95% CI, 1.18-1.73) for all-cause mortality, 1.27 (95% CI, 0.84-1.92) for cancer mortality, and 1.44 (95% CI, 0.96-2.16) for cardiovascular disease mortality. Stratified analysis found that the observed associations between NLR levels and mortality did not differ significantly. CONCLUSION In this nationally representative cohort of US adults, higher NLR was significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Abstract
Elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a powerful predictor of poor prognosis in a variety of diseases, but a single measurement of RDW cannot reflect the dynamic change of diseases. ΔRDW, as a risk stratification tool, can be used to record changes in RDW before and after treatment; also, it allows investigators to name the unit change of RDW in the studied population. So far, there have been few relevant studies on the predictive value of ΔRDW for different diseases; this article aims to review the studies and summaries of the current understandings on the correlation between ΔRDW and disease outcomes.

Background
Red cell distribution width (RDW) level is routinely provided in a simple and inexpensive complete blood count report. However, RDW is sometimes overlooked. Recently a higher RDW level is found associated with postoperative mortality after off-pump coronary artery bypass. Many risk-prediction tools are available, like the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation, Society of Thoracic Surgeons score, etc. but all need improvement for better prediction. So, a new risk-factor should be discovered which is simple enough for clinical use and cost-effective, and improves the risk assessment tools that help to predict and avoid preventable mortality following cardiac surgery.
Methods
The prospective study was conducted, taking a total of 150 patients of coronary artery disease who underwent elective isolated off-pump coronary artery bypass. The study population was grouped according to their preoperative RDW level as Group A (RDW ≤ 14%), Group B (RDW 14–16%), and Group C (RDW ≥ 16%). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed and multivariate regression analysis was done to see the predictive value of RDW for in-hospital mortality.
Results
The mortality rate was 2.7%, N = 150. ROC curve revealed Area Under the Curve 0.841 and p = 0.020 that indicates the RDW as the reliable predictor for in-hospital mortality. Multivariate regression analysis showed the RDW to be the only variable independently predicting in-hospital mortality after off-pump coronary artery bypass among possible haematological predictors. (OR 1.838, 95% CI 1.061–3.186, p = 0.030).
Conclusion
Preoperative raised RDW level is a novel predictor of in-hospital mortality after off-pump coronary artery bypass. Further studies should be done to determine the associated mechanism.

Abstract
Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of the variability of erythrocyte volumes. RDW has been associated with incidence of cardiovascular diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms for the increased cardiovascular risk are still unclear. This study aimed to examine associations of RDW and coronary atherosclerosis in the general population. Computed tomography was performed and RDW was measured in fresh blood from 5772 subjects (aged 50–64 years) from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS). Multinomial logistic regression was conducted to examine the associations between RDW and coronary artery calcium score (CACS). A total of 3902 (67.6%) individuals had low CACS (≤10), 18.6% had moderate CACS (>10 and ≤100) and 13.8% had high CACS (>100). The proportion with high CACS was 11.7%, 12.7%, 13.7% and 18.3%, respectively, in quartile 1–4 of RDW. After controlling for traditional risk factors, there were significant associations between RDW and high CACS: odds ratio = 1.51, 95% confidence interval: 1.18–1.94, and P = .001, for 4th vs 1st quartile of RDW. Elevated RDW is associated with coronary artery calcification in the middle-aged general population. RDW could be a reproducible and easily assessable biomarker of coronary calcification and cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been evaluated as a potential screening marker for cancer and prognostic marker in heart failure and coronary heart disease. Recent studies have been suggested the association of RDW with mortality in patients with hip fracture and arthroplasty. Objective of this study was to investigate whether RDW as a prognostic marker is significant in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF). MATERIALS AND METHODS Total of 460 patients with fresh OVF from January 2014 and September 2017 were assessed for a 1-year follow-up period. The cutoff value for RDW was set at 15%, and outcomes of conservative treatment of OVF were evaluated using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores, Barthel index, and walking state. RESULTS Of the total 460 patients, 125 patients (27.2%) had an elevated RDW. RDW value was not correlated with osteoporotic parameters. Both JOA score and Barthel index were significantly lower at 1 year after treatment in the elevated RDW group. In the elevated RDW group, 21 patients died within 1 year (mortality 16.8%) compared with 7 patients (mortality 2.1%) in the non-elevated RDW group; this was statistically significant. Multivariate statistical analysis showed elevated RDW, independent walk before OVF and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) remained independent factors associated with abasia after OVF affected. CONCLUSION Elevated RDW was associated with the poor clinical outcomes of conservative treatment of an OVF, independent of osteoporosis or severity of the OVF. RDW provides prognostic information for risk stratification as a senescence biomarker.

Abstract
Background Red cell distribution width (RDW) level is routinely provided in a simple and inexpensive complete blood count report. However, RDW is sometimes overlooked. Recently a higher RDW level is found associated with postoperative mortality after off-pump coronary artery bypass. Many risk-prediction tools are available, like the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation, Society of Thoracic Surgeons score, etc. but all need improvement for better prediction. So, a new risk-factor should be discovered which is simple enough for clinical use and cost-effective, and improves the risk assessment tools that help to predict and avoid preventable mortality following cardiac surgery. Methods The prospective study was conducted, taking a total of 150 patients of coronary artery disease who underwent elective isolated off-pump coronary artery bypass. The study population was grouped according to their preoperative RDW level as Group A (RDW ≤ 14%), Group B (RDW 14–16%), and Group C (RDW ≥ 16%). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed and multivariate regression analysis was done to see the predictive value of RDW for in-hospital mortality. Results The mortality rate was 2.7%, N = 150. ROC curve revealed Area Under the Curve 0.841 and p = 0.020 that indicates the RDW as the reliable predictor for in-hospital mortality. Multivariate regression analysis showed the RDW to be the only variable independently predicting in-hospital mortality after off-pump coronary artery bypass among possible haematological predictors. (OR 1.838, 95% CI 1.061–3.186, p = 0.030). Conclusion Preoperative raised RDW level is a novel predictor of in-hospital mortality after off-pump coronary artery bypass. Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the association between the red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and mortality in patients with stroke. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study on patients with stroke in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care Database III. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios of 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year mortality in relation to the RDW level. Results A total of 4134 patients were enrolled, including 2646 patients with ischemic stroke and 1668 with hemorrhagic stroke. After adjustment for potential confounders, the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 30-day mortality for the second (RDW: 13.4%–14.3%) and third (>14.3%) tertiles was 1.15 (0.96, 1.37) and 1.40 (1.17, 1.68), respectively, compared with the reference group (<13.4%). A two-piecewise linear regression model was established and the inflection point of RDW was 16.7%. When RDW was >16.7%, an increase in RDW did not increase stroke mortality. Conclusions The RDW is a prognostic factor of patients with stroke. This finding needs to be confirmed in future prospective studies.

Abstract
Although the association between serum level of C-reactive protein (CRP) and risk of cardiovascular events (CVEs) has been reported, the comprehensive assessment of the quantitative association of CRP level with risk of CVEs has not been reported. Our meta-analysis aims to quantitatively evaluate the association of CRP level and risk of CVEs. We searched PubMed and Embase databases for articles published up to December 6, 2019. Studies with data on men and women, different types of CVEs and multiple cohorts within a study were treated as independent studies. Generalized least-squares regression models were used to assess the quantitative association between CRP level and risk of CVEs. Restricted cubic splines were used to model the possible linear association between CRP and CVEs. We included 36 articles (60 studies; 227,715 participants) in the analysis. The pooled relative risks (RRs) of high versus low CRP level for cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) were 1.64 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.49-1.82), 1.46 (95% CI, 1.35-1.58), and 1.55 (95% CI, 1.47-1.63), respectively. A linear association was found between CRP level and CVD (P = 0.429), stroke (P = 0.940), and CHD (P = 0.931); with each 1-mg/L increase in CRP level, the pooled RRs for CVD, stroke, and CHD were 1.18 (95% CI, 1.12-1.24), 1.07 (95% CI, 1.04-1.09), and 1.12 (95% CI, 1.08-1.16), respectively. This meta-analysis suggests that risk of CVEs increases with increasing serum CRP level.

Red blood cell distribution width values in erectile dysfunction. Rev Int Androl 2020; 20:24-30. Abstract
PURPOSE Erectile dysfunction (ED) has increased prevalence by age and significantly affects the quality of life of men and their partners. To investigate the relationship between ED and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) values. MATERIALS AND METHOD Between September 2019 and December 2019, a total of 192 individuals comprising those that were admitted to the urology outpatient clinic with ED complaints and healthy volunteers from among hospital staff were prospectively included in the study. The participants were divided into two groups according to the international erectile function index (IIEF-5) as ED group (n=148) and control group (n=44). RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of age, smoking status, presence of hypertension, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, total prostate-specific antigen and haematocrit values. Body mass index, fasting blood sugar, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were significantly higher in the ED group (28.5±27.4kg/m2 vs 26.8±26.5kg/m2, p=.021, 109.05±49.7mg/dl vs 93.39±10.2mg/dl, p<.001, 2.18±1.3 vs 1.74±0.3, p=.031, and 113.7±47 vs 92.4±24.1, p=.004, respectively). The mean RDW values were 13.7±1.1 in the ED group and 13±0.5 in the control group (p<.001). The multivariate analysis revealed PLR [1.02 OR (1-1.04), p=.007] and RDW [2.75 OR (1.56-4.85), p<.001] as independent predictors for an ED diagnosis. CONCLUSION Based on the strong relationship between RDW and ED, we consider that RDW may be a new indicator in the diagnosis of ED.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We have previously shown that panoramic X-rays (PXs) demonstrating calcified carotid artery atheromas (CCAA) are associated with increased systemic inflammation demonstrating increased neutrophil lymphocyte ratios (NLRs), a validated risk indicator of fatal myocardial infarctions arising from coronary artery atherosclerosis. Using this same cohort of patients (with minor adjustments because of missing data), we sought to determine if a like association existed between PXs evidencing CCAA and elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW) given conflicting data as its reliability relative to NLR as a biologic marker of system inflammation. We hypothesized that CCAAs on PXs would simultaneously be associated with both increased NLR and RDW. MATERIALS AND METHODS Investigators implemented a cross-sectional study design. Study sample consisted of patient medical records and PXs of white men ≥ 55 years. Two groups (N = 50 each) were constituted, one with atheromas (CCAA+) and without atheromas (CCAA-). The predictor variable was CCAA+ and outcome variables were NLR and RDW. Bootstrapping analysis was employed to analyze the differences in mean NLRs and RDWs between groups since the data was not normally distributed. Statistical significance determined to be ≤ 0.05 for all tests. The Medical Center's Institutional Review Board approved the research protocol. RESULTS A study group of 50 CCAA+ men (mean age 71; range 58-89 years) demonstrated a mean NLR of 2.98 ± 1.38 and an RDW of 13.21 ± 0.85. A control group of 50 CCAA- males (mean age 70 range; 55-91 years) evidenced a mean NLR of 2.38 ± 0.77 and an RDW of 13.16 ± 0.77. Bootstrapping comparison of NLR values evidenced significant (P = 0.008) difference (95% confidence interval of difference of mean: - 0.4272, 0.4384; observed effect size: 0.579) between groups; however, there was no significant difference in RDW values between the groups. Furthermore, logistic regression modeling demonstrated that for a one unit increase in NLR the odds of being CCAA+ (vs. CCAA-) increases by a factor of 1.659. CONCLUSION The existence of CCAA seen on PXs of elderly white men is associated with significantly (P = 0.008) elevated NLR values but is not associated with increases in RDW.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The distribution width of red blood cells (RDW) is a known factor risk for mortality. However, the association between high RDW and short-term mortality in surgical patients is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of high RDW with all-cause in-hospital mortality, in surgical and non-surgical patients. METHODS A retrospective study was performed with patients aged 18 years or older, hospitalized in Clinical Medical and Surgery wards, using adjustments based on a conceptual model. Cox regression was used to determine the independent predictors of in-hospital mortality. The RDW cutoff value was 13.6%. RESULTS Of the 2923 patients, 46.1% were over 60 years old, 58.7% were male and 4.7% died. The area under the ROC curve was 0.677 (CI 95%: 0.619-0.712). RDW was associated with an adjusted risk for all-cause in-hospital mortality in surgical (HR 1.17 - CI 95%: 1.03-1.32), but not in clinical patients. For every 1% increase in RDW, the risk of all-cause hospital death in surgical patients increased by 17%. RDW ≥13.6% was associated with an adjusted risk of all cause in-hospital mortality in surgical (HR 2.65 - 95%CI: 1.22-5.73), but not in clinical patients. CONCLUSIONS High RDW was associated with a risk of in-hospital mortality independent of age, sex, hemoglobin level, multimorbidity, nutritional status and immunological condition. We therefore recommend the use of RDW as a possible marker of mortality risk in clinical practice in surgical patients.

Abstract
Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been suggested to have a predictive potential for several cardiovascular diseases, but its association with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is unknown. We examined whether RDW is associated with the risk of AAA among 27,260 individuals from the population-based Malmö Diet and Cancer Study cohort. Data of baseline characteristics were collected during 1991–1996. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for AAA across quartiles of RDW. During a median follow-up of 21.7 years, 491 subjects developed AAA. After adjustment for other confounding factors, participants in the highest quartile of RDW experienced 61% increased risk of AAA as compared to those with the lowest quartile (HR = 1.61, CI = 1.20, 2.12). RDW showed similar relationship with severe (i.e. ruptured or surgically repaired) AAA or non-severe AAA (adjusted HR 1.58 and 1.60, respectively). The observed association between RDW and AAA risk was significant in current smokers (adjusted HR = 1.68, CI = 1.18, 2.38) but not in former smokers (adjusted HR = 1.13, CI = 0.72, 1.79), or never-smokers (adjusted HR = 1.77, CI = 0.74, 4.22). Elevated RDW is associated with increased future incidence of AAA, however the causal and pathophysiological mechanisms remain to be explored.

Abstract
PURPOSE We conducted a cross-sectional investigation of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) patients, and determined important predictive factors of HRQOL in these patients. METHODS Psychological factors were evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). HRQOL was evaluated with the EQ-5D. Laboratory data (albumin, haemoglobin and C-reactive protein) were collected for medical evaluation. We also collected participants' demographic data, including gender, age, et al. This study was in compliance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist. RESULTS The mean EQ-5D score was 0.86 ± 0.12, mean HADS-anxiety score was 5.27 ± 3.41, mean HADS-depression score was 5.29 ± 3.58, mean PSQI score was 7.00 ± 4.23 and mean GSES score was 6.86 ± 2.03. Participants' mean haemoglobin was 108.18 ± 16.45 g/L, mean albumin was 41.80 ± 4.61 g/L and mean C-reactive protein was 8.88 ± 18.50 mg/L. HRQOL was negatively correlated with HADS-anxiety (r = -0.390, p < 0.001), HADS-depression (r = -0.385, p < 0.001), PSQI (r = -0.285, p < 0.001) and C-reactive protein (r = -0.198, p = 0.034). HRQOL was positively correlated with GSES (r = 0.205, p = 0.007). Age (p < 0.001), anxiety (p < 0.001), depression (p = 0.002), and postdialysis unemployment (p < 0.001) were independent risk factors for HRQOL. CONCLUSION Different health interventions should be implemented to improve patients' HRQOL. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The results will provide evidence for establishing healthcare interventions to maintain or improve HRQOL among this patient population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patients with hyperuricaemia are at relatively high risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and CHD risk in a middle-aged and elderly population with hyperuricaemia. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS This study was conducted in a health examination centre of China. Participants were diagnosed with hyperuricaemia based on uric acid concentrations. Specifically, males with a uric acid concentration ≥416 μmol/L were included, as well as females with a concentration ≥360 μmol/L. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES 10-year CHD risk for each individual was evaluated using Framingham risk score based on the Adult Treatment Panel III charts. RESULTS A total of 517 patients with hyperuricaemia (438 males and 79 females) aged from 40 to 85 years old were included in the present study. 193 (37.3%) patients were defined with relatively high 10-year CHD risk. Compared with the lowest quintile, the crude ORs of relatively high 10-year CHD risks were 1.43 (95% CI 0.78 to 2.63, p=0.245), 2.05 (95% CI 1.14 to 3.67, p=0.016), 2.77 (95% CI 1.54 to 4.98, p=0.001), 2.12 (95% CI 1.18 to 3.80, p=0.012) in the second, third, fourth and fifth quintiles of serum hs-CRP level, respectively (p for trend=0.057). The multivariable-adjusted ORs of relatively high 10-year CHD risk were 1.40 (95% CI 0.75 to 2.61, p=0.291) in the second, 2.05 (95% CI 1.13 to 3.72, p=0.019) in the third, 2.69 (95% CI 1.47 to 4.89, p=0.001) in the fourth and 2.10 (95% CI 1.15 to 3.84, p=0.016) in the fifth quintile of serum hs-CRP level when compared with the lowest quintile (p for trend=0.068). CONCLUSION This study showed that ORs of relatively high 10-year CHD risk were raised in patients with hyperuricaemia with higher serum hs-CRP level; however, there was a not significant but borderline trend association and that more research is needed.

Abstract
Background The combination of red blood cell distribution width and body mass index (COR-BMI) is indicated as a new prognostic index of survival in patients with laryngeal cancer. However, the ability of this prediction in other types of cancer or whether its use can be expanded to non-oncological patients is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the prediction of prognosis of in-hospital mortality of the COR-BMI in oncological and non-oncological patients. Methods A retrospective study was performed with all hospitalized patients between 2014 and 2016, totaling 2930 patients, 262 oncological and 2668 non-oncological. The COR-BMI was divided into three classes: 0, RDW ≤ 13.1% and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2; 1, RDW ≤ 13.1% and BMI < 18.5 or ≥ 18.5 but < 25 kg/m2 and RDW > 13.1% and BMI ≥ 18.5 but < 25 or BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2; and 2, RDW > 13.1% and BMI < 18.5 kg/m2. In order to analyze the relationship between COR-BMI and in-hospital mortality in the studied population, the Cox Proportional Hazards Model was used in a multivariate analysis based on a conceptual model. Results The COR-BMI was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality in non-oncological patients (1 versus 0: HR = 3.34; CI = 1.60–6.96, p = 0.001; 2 versus 0: HR = 3.38; CI = 1.22–9.39, p = 0.019). The survival rate of these patients was lower among those with the highest scores on the COR-BMI. This prediction was not found in oncological patients. Conclusion The present study suggests that the COR-BMI may have its practical use expanded to non-oncological patients as an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in patients with coronary artery disease undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods A retrospective cohort study (CORFCHD-PCI, [Identifier: ChiCTR-INR-16010153]) of 6050 patients who were hospitalized with a diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and treated with PCI from January 2008 to December 2016 were enrolled in the study. The primary outcome was long-term mortality after PCI. Clinical follow-up data of participating patients were obtained during an outpatient examination 35.9 ± 22.6 months after PCI. Demographic and clinical data and admission laboratory parameters were recorded, and patients were categorized into two groups according to RDW level (high group ≥13.1%; low group < 13.1%). Results Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed RDW as an independent prognosis factor for cardiac death. The incidence of cardiac death increased 1.33 times in patients in the high RDW group (HR, 1.331; 95% CI, 1.009–1.755, P = 0.043). Kaplan–Meier survival analysis suggested that patients with high RDW tended to have an increased accumulated risk of cardiac death. However, we did not found significant differences in the incidence of long-term mortality (adjusted HR = 1.203[0.941–1.537], P = 0.140), MACCE (adjusted HR = 1.128[0.979–1.301], P = 0.096), MACE (adjusted HR = 1.155[0.994–1.341], P = 0.059), stroke, bleeding events or readmission between the two groups. Conclusion The baseline level of RDW is an independent predictor for cardiac death in post-PCI CAD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Sleep apnea is associated with elevated inflammatory markers. A subgroup of patients never report sleep disturbances to their physician. The inflammatory status of this subgroup is not known. The present study aims to evaluate two inflammatory markers, C-reactive protein (CRP) and red cell distribution width (RDW), in those with unreported sleep disturbances and compares these findings to those with and without reported sleep disorders. We also investigate the utility of RDW as an inflammatory marker in sleep disorders. METHODS Sample includes 9,901 noninstitutionalized, civilian, nonpregnant adults from the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationally representative, cross-sectional U.S. study. Sleep questionnaire and laboratory data were used to compare inflammatory markers (CRP and RDW) in five subgroups of individuals: reporting physician-diagnosed sleep apnea, reporting another physician-diagnosed sleep disorder, reported sleep disturbance to physician with no resulting diagnosis, unreported sleep disturbance (poor sleep quality not reported to physician), and no diagnosed sleep disorder or sleep disturbance. RESULTS Individuals with unreported sleep disturbance had significantly higher odds of elevated RDW (>13.6%) when compared to those without a sleep disturbance in adjusted models (OR=1.33). Those with unreported sleep disturbance had significantly higher odds of elevated CRP levels (>1 mg/L) than those without sleep disturbances (OR 1.34), although the association was not significant when adjusted for obesity and other controls. CONCLUSION Self-identified unreported sleep disturbances are associated with significantly higher odds of elevated RDW than those without sleep disturbances. RDW may serve as a valuable indicator in identifying individuals at higher risk for sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.

Abstract
Higher Red Blood Cell Distribution Width (RDW or anisocytosis) predicts incident coronary artery disease (CAD) plus all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, but its predictive value for other common diseases in healthy volunteers is less clear. We aimed to determine the shorter and longer term associations between RDW and incident common conditions in participants free of baseline disease, followed for 9 years. We undertook a prospective analysis of RDW% using 240,477 healthy UK Biobank study volunteers aged 40–70 years at baseline, with outcomes ascertained during follow-up (≤9 years). Participants were free of anemia, CAD, type-2 diabetes, stroke, hypertension, COPD, and any cancer (except non-melanoma skin cancer) at baseline. Survival models (with competing Hazards) tested associations with outcomes from hospital admission records and death certificates. High RDW (≥15% variation, n = 6,050) compared to low (<12.5% n = 20,844) was strongly associated with mortality (HR 3.10: 95% CI 2.57 to 3.74), adjusted for age, sex, smoking status, education level, mean cell volume and hemoglobin concentration. Higher RDW was also associated with incident CAD (sub-HR 1.67: 1.40 to 1.99), heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and cancer (sHR 1.37: 1.21 to 1.55; colorectal cancer sHR 1.92: 1.36 to 2.72), especially leukemia (sHR 2.85: 1.63 to 4.97). Associations showed dose-response relationships, and RDW had long-term predictive value (≥4.5 years after assessment) for the majority of outcomes, which were similar in younger and older persons. In conclusion, higher RDW predicted onsets of a wide range of common conditions as well as mortality in a large healthy volunteer cohort. RDW is not just a short term predictor, as high levels were predictive 4.5 to 9 years after baseline in healthy volunteers. The wide range of outcomes reflects known RDW genetic influences, including diverse disease risks. RDW may be a useful clinical marker for inclusion in wellness assessments.

Abstract
Background Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is highly associated with various clinical states. In the present study, we aimed to determine the natures of associations between RDW changes and early adverse events after isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods We retrospectively analyzed medical records of enrolled 117 patients. Patients were classified into two groups depending on early adverse events (No-event vs. Event). Delta RDW values were calculated (ΔRDW: Post-Peak RDW minus Pre-RDW). Patients were divided into tertiles based on ΔRDW. The ΔRDW cut-off point for an adverse event was determined by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. In addition, logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent factors of early adverse events. Results Thirty eight patients experienced 53 early adverse events. ΔRDW and ΔC-reactive protein were significantly higher in the Events group than in the No-event group. Incidences of early adverse events increased significantly between ΔRDW tertiles (P<0.001). The ROC curve of ΔRDW showed that a ΔRDW of ≥1.45 had a sensitivity of 71.1% and a specificity of 78.2% for predicting an early adverse event after CABG (P<0.001). Multivariable analysis showed ΔRDW (P=0.042) and length of ICU stay (P<0.001) independently predicted an adverse event. Conclusions ΔRDW was identified to be an independent predictor of early adverse events, and a ΔRDW cut-off of 1.45 was found to predict early adverse events after CABG. Careful monitoring of RDW trends after isolated CABG provides a simple, inexpensive and objective means of predicting early adverse events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS We aimed to improve the understanding of potential associations between commonly available hematological biomarkers and the coronary artery calcification (CAC) score, which may help unravel the pathophysiology of coronary calcifications and subclinical coronary artery disease. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed within the Utrecht Patient Oriented Database (UPOD). Patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease who underwent CT CAC scoring as well as standard hematology analysis that was part of routine clinical care (within 3 months of CT acquisition) were included. Complete hematology datasets were extracted from hematology analyzers. Linear regression adjusted for potential confounders was used to assess if hematological biomarkers were related to the CAC score. RESULTS In total, 1504 patients were included, of whom 43% (n = 647) had a CAC score of 0. Mean age (±SD) was 53 ± 13 years, and 34% of patients were women. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW, β = 0.20 [0.05-0.36], p=0.007), the fraction of immature reticulocytes (β = 0.97 [0.10-6.43], p=0.004), coefficient of variation of neutrophil lobularity (β = 0.13 [0.01-0.25], p=0.040) and mean lymphocyte cell size (β = 0.21 [0.08-0.34], p=0.001) were positively associated with the CAC score after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). CONCLUSIONS This study confirms the known association of RDW with the CAC score, and presents the fraction of immature reticulocytes, coefficient of variation of neutrophil lobularity, and mean lymphocyte cell size as new markers associated with a higher CAC score.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chromogranin A (CgA) is a valuable biomarker for detection and follow-up of patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs). However, various comorbidities may influence serum CgA, which decreases its diagnostic accuracy. We aimed to investigate which laboratory parameters are independently associated with increased CgA in real-life setting and to develop a scoring system, which could improve the diagnostic accuracy of CgA in detecting patients with NENs. METHODS This retrospective study included 55 treatment naïve patients with NENs and160 patients with various comorbidities but without NEN (nonNENs). Scoring system (CgA-score) was developed based on z-scores obtained from receiver operating curve analysis for each parameter that was associated with elevated serum CgA in nonNENs. RESULTS CgA correlated positively with serum BUN, creatinine, α2-globulin, red-cell distribution width, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, plasma glucose and correlated inversely with hemoglobin, thrombocytes and serum albumin. Serum CgA was also associated with the presence of chronic renal failure, arterial hypertension and diabetes and the use of PPI. In the entire study population, CgA showed an area under the curve of 0.656. Aforementioned parameters were used to develop a CgA-score. In a cohort of patients with CgA-score <12.0 (N = 87), serum CgA >156.5 ng/ml had 77.8% sensitivity and 91.5% specificity for detecting NENs (AUC 0.841, 95% CI 0.713-0.969, P < 0.001). Serum CgA had no diagnostic value in detecting NENs in patients with CgA-score >12.0 (AUC 0.554, 95% CI 0.405-0.702, P = 0.430). CONCLUSIONS CgA-score encompasses a wide range of comorbidities and represents a promising tool that could improve diagnostic performance of CgA in everyday clinical practice.

Abstract
The combined value of RDW and GRACE risk score for cardiovascular prognosis in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has not been fully investigated. This study was designed to explore the combined value of RDW and GRACE risk score on predicting long-term major adverse cardiac event (Mace) in STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI. This study included 390 STEMI patients. The primary endpoint at the (33.5 ± 7.1) months follow-up was composed of cardiac death and nonfatal myocardial infarction. The relationship between clinical parameters and clinical outcomes was evaluated using Cox regression model and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Mace occurred in 126 (32.3%) patients including 54 (13.8%) cardiac deaths and 72 (18.5%) nonfatal myocardial infarctions. Patients in Mace group had significantly higher RDW and GRACE score than the patients in non-Mace group. According to the Cox model, RDW and GRACE score were the most important independent predictors of Mace and cardiac death. The best cut-off value for RDW to predict the occurrence of primary events was 13.25% (AUC = 0.694, 95% CI:0.639–0.750, P < 0.001) and that for GRACE score was 119.5 (AUC = 0.721, 95% CI:0.666–0.777, P < 0.001). The combination of RDW and GRACE score were more valuable (AUC = 0.775, 95% CI: 0.727–0.824, P < 0.001). Kaplan–Meier analysis provided significant prognostic information with the highest risk for cardiac death (Log-Rank χ2 = 24.684, P < 0.001) in group with both high RDW (> 13.25%) and high GRACE score (> 119.5). The combination of RDW level and GRACE score may be valuable and simple independent predictors of Mace and cardiac death in STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI. They may be useful tools for risk stratification and may indicate long-term clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Whether red cell distribution width (RDW) can be a potential indicator for diabetic nephropathy (DN) is unknown. A total of 809 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) patients were divided into 4 groups according to the quartiles (Q) of the RDW (%): Q1 ≤ 12.4 (n = 229), 12.4 < Q2 ≤ 12.9 (n = 202), 12.9 < Q3 < 13.5 (n = 168), Q4 ≥ 13.5 (n = 210). Results showed that the levels in Q4 group was higher in age, disease duration, systolic blood pressure, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid and proteinuria but lower in hemoglobin, serum albumin and glycosylated hemoglobin compared to Q1 group. Furthermore, the incidences of DN, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, hypertension and coronary heart disease in the Q3 or Q4 group were higher compared to Q1 group. Medications including calcium channel blockers and antiplatelet therapy also showed higher frequencies in Q3 or Q4 group compared to Q1. Logistic regression indicated that the antiplatelet therapy (OR = 2.065), hypertension (OR = 2.819), creatinine (OR = 4.473) and proteinuria (OR = 2.085) were positively associated with level of Q4 group, but higher hemoglobin (OR = 0.021) and serum Ca2+ (OR = 0.178) were negatively associated with Q4. This data suggest that high level of RDW in T2D patients indicates a higher risk and a poor prognosis for DN.

Abstract
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is the coefficient of variation of red blood cell size, considered to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to comprehensively synthesize previous studies on RDW and CVD outcomes through an overall and dose-response meta-analysis. PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched systematically for English and Chinese language publications up to November 30, 2015. We extracted data from publications matching our inclusion criteria for calculating pooled hazard ratio (HR), which was used to assess prognostic impact of RDW on CVD. Twenty-seven articles, consisting of 28 studies and 102,689 participants (mean age 63.9 years, 63,703 males/36,846 females, 2,140 gender-unmentioned subjects) were included in the present meta-analysis. The pooled HRs are 1.12 (95% CI = 1.09-1.15) for the association of all-cause mortality (ACM) per 1% increase of RDW, 1.12(95% CI = 1.08-1.17) for major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) per 1% increase of RDW. A dose-response curve relating RDW increase to its effect on CVD outcomes was established (pcurve < 0.001). For every 1-unit increase of RDW, there is an increased risk of occurrence of ACM (pooled HR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.02-1.04) and MACEs (pooled HR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.01-1.06). This study indicates RDW may be a prognostic indicator for CVD outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functions, morphology, distributions, and index of the circulating cells are the most useful parameters that indicate various inflammatory and toxic conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of these parameters in patients diagnosed with (synthetic) cannabis use disorder. METHODS This study included a total of 40 patients in the study group (SG) with synthetic cannabis use; and 40 healthy individuals as the control group (CG). Participants, who had hematological disorders and other chronic diseases, were excluded from the study. All hematological parameters of SG were compared with CG. Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) values were calculated and compared between groups. RESULTS There were statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of WBC, MCH, RDW, MCV, MPV, and NEU, LYM%, MONO% parameters (P<.05). MPW and LYM% were significantly lower in SG compared to CG. WBC, MCH, RDW, MCV, MPV, MONO, and NEU parameters were significantly higher in SG compared to CG (P<.05). UIBC and TIBC levels were significantly higher in SG compared to CG (P<.001). Although there was statistically significant difference between groups in terms of NLR, there was no significant difference for PLR values. CONCLUSION Our data suggested that chronic use of cannabinoids can lead to deterioration of hematopoietic cells. Chronic use of cannabinoids was consistent with subthreshold/subclinical megaloblastic anemia with iron deficiency. Inflammatory cells, especially neutrophil and monocyte counts were higher in SG compared to CG. Thus, recovery of subclinical hematological parameters should be considered in cannabis use disorder patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been linked to cardiovascular disease. We sought to determine whether addition of RDW improved the Framingham risk score (FRS) model to predict cardiovascular mortality in a healthy US cohort. METHODS We performed a post-hoc analysis of the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey-III (1988-94) cohort, including non-anemic subjects aged 30-79years. Primary endpoint was death from coronary heart disease (CHD). We divided the cohort into three risk categories: <6%, 6-20% and >20%. RDW>14.5 was considered high. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox proportional hazards models were created. Discrimination, calibration and reclassification were used to assess the value of addition of RDW to the FRS model. RESULTS We included 7005 subjects with a mean follow up of 14.1years. Overall, there were 233 (3.3%) CHD deaths; 27 (8.2%) in subjects with RDW>14.5 compared to 206 (3.1%) in subjects with RDW≤14.5 (p<0.001). Adjusted hazard ratio of RDW in predicting CHD mortality was 2.02 (1.04-3.94, p=0.039). Addition of RDW to FRS model showed significant improvement in C-statistic (0.8784 vs. 0.8751, p=0.032) and area under curve (0.8565 vs. 0.8544, p=0.05). There was significant reclassification of FRS with a net reclassification index (NRI) of 5.6% (p=0.017), and an intermediate-risk NRI of 9.6% (p=0.011). Absolute integrated discrimination index (IDI) was 0.004 (p=0.02), with relative IDI of 10.4%. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates that RDW is a promising biomarker which improves prediction of cardiovascular mortality over and above traditional cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that elevated red blood cell distribution width is associated with poor outcome in cardiovascular diseases. In order to assess the predictive value of red blood cell distribution width, before treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins, for coronary artery lesions in patient with Kawasaki disease, we compared 83 patients with coronary artery lesions and 339 patients without coronary artery lesions before treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin. Clinical, echocardiographic, and biochemical values were evaluated along with red blood cell distribution width. A total of 422 consecutive patients with Kawasaki disease were enrolled into our study. According to receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the optimal red blood cell distribution width cut-off value for predicting coronary artery lesions was 14.55% (area under the curve was 0.721; p=0.000); eighty-three patients (19.7%) had coronary artery lesions, and 70% of the patients with coronary artery lesions had red blood cell distribution width level >14.55%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that fever duration >14 days (odds ratio was 3.42, 95% confidence interval was 1.27-9.22; p=0.015), intravenous immunoglobulin resistance (odds ratio was 2.33, 95% confidence interval was 1.02-5.29; p=0.04), and red blood cell distribution width >14.55% (odds ratio was 3.49, 95% confidence interval was 2.01-6.05; p=0.000) were independent predictors of coronary artery lesions in patients with Kawasaki disease. In Conclusion, red blood cell distribution width may be helpful for predicting coronary artery lesions in patients with Kawasaki disease.

Abstract
Inflammation plays an important role in the pathophysiology of vascular disease. In this review, we consider the associations between the neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR; an indicator of inflammation) and vascular disease and its associated risk factors. The NLR has received attention due to its role as an independent prognostic factor for coronary artery disease. The NLR can also be affected by atherosclerotic risk factors, such as hypercholesterolemia, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and hypertension. Importantly, it can predict mortality in cardiovascular diseases. There are also reports of a positive correlation between the NLR and commonly used inflammatory markers. Inflammation is important not only in pathophysiology but also clinical outcomes of many diseases. The NLR is a widely available, easily derived, and reproducible marker of inflammation. Unlike many other inflammatory markers, the NLR is inexpensive and readily available and it provides additional risk stratification beyond conventional risk scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Considering the limited studies specifically evaluating the role of Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), we aimed to investigate the role of baseline RDW in short- and intermediate-term cardiovascular events in ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients under primary PCI. METHODS This is a historical cohort registry analysis of 1161 patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction under primary PCI. According to inclusion criteria, 838 patients were allocated for analysis. Patients with RDW levels of 13.6% or higher were considered as high RDW group (third tertile). All the individuals were followed up for in-hospital and 6-month mortality along with readmission and composite major adverse cardiac events. RESULTS In-hospital deaths occurred in 53 (6.3%) patients and at 6-month follow-up 79 (9.4%) cases of mortality were documented. In-hospital and 6-month mortalities showed a significant trend in favor of high RDW group (13.3% vs. 5.9%, P = 0.003; 19.7% vs. 7.9%, P < 0.001, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that high RDW was significantly and independently associated with higher rates of 6-month mortality (hazard ratio: 2.909; 95% confidence interval: 1.166-7.257; P = 0.022). RDW was also a significant predictor for 6-month mortality independent of anemia (hazard ratio: 2.811; 95% confidence interval: 1.047-7.551; P = 0.040). CONCLUSIONS We found a significant association between high RDW and in-hospital and 6-month mortality as well as the occurrence of major adverse cardiac event. Meanwhile RDW was found to be a significant predictor for 6-month mortality independent of anemia. Thus, it would be beneficial to use RDW as a risk stratification index to identify high risk intent-to-treat patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been reported that increased red blood cell distribution width (RDW) predicts adverse events in cardiovascular disease and in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. However, the role of serum RDW levels in drug-eluting stent (DES) restenosis remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum RDW levels and in-stent restenosis (ISR) after coronary stenting with DES in stable angina pectoris (SAP) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 293 consecutive chronic SAP patients with coronary DES implantation were enrolled in this study. The ISR was analyzed by coronary angiography analysis at a mean follow-up of 8 months. According to whether ISR was detected, patients were divided into two groups: the ISR group (n=45) and the non-ISR group (n=247). Serum RDW was assessed both at admission and at the 8-month follow-up in all patients. Standard medication was continued throughout the investigation period. RESULTS Baseline characteristics of the two groups were similar. Patients in the ISR group had significantly higher RDW levels compared with patients in the non-ISR group both at admission and at follow-up (P<0.01, respectively). Furthermore, the ISR group had significantly longer stent length and lower stent diameter compared with the non-ISR group (P<0.01, respectively). In a multivariate analysis, diabetes mellitus, current smoking, RDW levels, C-reactive protein levels, stent length, and stent diameter were associated independently with ISR. CONCLUSION Serum RDW level may independently predict ISR at both admission and follow-up in SAP patients with coronary DES implantation, which indicates that a chronic inflammatory response might be involved in the pathogenesis of ISR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Red cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with morbidity and mortality in chronic cardiac disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of RDW as a predictor of adverse outcome in patients with carotid atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS We prospectively studied 1065 of 1286 consecutive patients with neurological asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis as assessed by duplex Doppler sonography. The study end points were all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality respectively. RESULTS During a median follow-up time of 6·2 years (interquartile range 5·9-6·6), corresponding to 5551 overall person-years, 275 patients (25·8%) died. Of them, 182 patients (66·2%) died due to cardiovascular causes. RDW was significantly associated with adverse outcome. In a continuous multivariate Cox regression analysis, the adjusted hazard ratio for each per cent increase in RDW was 1·39 (95% CI 1·27-1·53; P < 0·001) for all-cause and 1·43 (95% CI 1·28-1·60; P < 0·001) for cardiovascular mortality respectively. Kaplan-Meier estimates showed a gradual relationship between increasing quartiles of RDW and death (log rank P < 0·001). Adjusted hazard ratios for all-cause death ranged from 0·89 to 1·94 for the highest vs. the lowest quartile (P < 0·001 for trend) and for cardiovascular death from 1·08 to 2·34 for the highest vs. the lowest quartile (P < 0·001 for trend) respectively. CONCLUSIONS Red cell distribution width was significantly and independently associated with all-cause and cardiovascular death in patients with asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been found to be a significant prognostic factor of mortality in many cardiovascular diseases. However, a link between RDW at admission with long-term mortality in the hip fracture population has not been well established. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the long-term prognostic value of RDW in a well-defined hip fracture cohort, and to compare the effect of RDW in patients with and without anemia. A prospective cohort study was performed on 1479 hip fracture patients admitted at the General Hospital of Chinese PLA between January 2000 and October 2011 with a follow-up study over a 2-year period. A total of 1479 patients were used for the evaluation of 2-year all-cause mortality, while 804 patients with more than 4 years of follow-up were extracted for further evaluation of 4-year all-cause mortality. Cox proportional regression was used to evaluate the association between admission RDW and long-term mortality, adjusting for potential confounding variables. Higher RDW values were strongly associated with increased all-cause mortality. After adjusting for age, mean corpuscular volume, admission hemoglobin, comorbidities, and complications, RDW had a significant independent association with both 2-year mortality with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.183 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.017 to 1.376) and 4-year mortality with an HR of 1.244 (95% CI, 1.052 to 1.471). In stratified analysis, the effect of RDW was even more pronounced, with 2-year mortality HR of 1.341 (95% CI, 1.095 to 1.643) and 4-year mortality HR of 1.345 (95% CI, 1.071 to 1.688) in non-anemic patients. In non-anemic patients, elevated RDW values are significantly associated with increased odds of all-cause mortality, implying that RDW may be a possible laboratory biomarker for risk stratification in non-anemic hip fracture patients. Further studies are needed to confirm the current finding in different and larger hip fracture cohorts.
