Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are increasingly prevalent in clinical settings. With the continuous improvement of people's living standards, the gradual acceleration of the pace of life, and the deterioration of the living environment in recent years, the incidence of CVDs is increasing annually. The prevalence of CVDs among individuals aged 50 and above is notably elevated, posing a significant risk to patients' well-being and lives. At this juncture, numerous clinical treatment choices are available for managing CVDs, with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy standing out as a practical, safe, and reliable option. Over the recent years, there has been growing acknowledgement among both medical professionals and patients. With the expanding integration of TCM in the treatment of various clinical conditions, the use of TCM in managing CVDs has gained significant attention within the medical community, potentially emerging as an efficacious approach for addressing cardiovascular diseases. This article conducts a comprehensive review of the TCM approach, particularly acupuncture, as a supplementary treatment for CVDs, highlighting its ability to effectively lower blood pressure, decrease coronary artery events, mitigate arrhythmias, and enhance cardiac function when used alongside conventional medication. The review underscores the promise of acupuncture in enhancing cardiovascular health, although variations in research methodologies necessitate standardized applications.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) remains a significant burden. Traditional herbal medicines have shown cardioprotective effects in treating HFrEF. However, the implications of herbal formulation considering the dynamic immunohistological changes in the myocardium following acute ischemic injury have been insufficiently discussed. This review investigated the efficacy and mechanisms reported in studies using rat or mouse models of HFrEF induced by left descending coronary artery ligation. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, AMED, CINAHL, and CENTRAL databases. Information was extracted regarding study characteristics, disease model induction protocols, intervention characteristics, treatment protocols, outcomes, and suggested mechanisms. Hierarchical cluster analysis of test drugs was performed based on constituent herb similarities. The risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Systematic Review Center for Laboratory animal Experimentation RoB tool. Results: Overall, 26 studies met the eligibility criteria. HF model induction periods after LADCA ligation ranged from 1 day to 12 weeks. Most studies administered the test drug for four weeks. Commonly used herbs included Panax ginseng, Astragalus membranaceus, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Carthamus tinctorius, and Lepidium apetalum, which demonstrated anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects through various signaling pathways. The overall RoB was relatively high. No significant association was found between model induction periods and herbal formulations or examined mechanisms. Conclusions: Future research should consider the time-dependent immunohistological features of the myocardium during HF treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of cardiac arrhythmia, which can lead to cardiac death, heart failure, and cardioembolic stroke, is increasing. Although various Western medicines for cardiac arrhythmias have been developed, there are still various difficulties in the management of arrhythmias. Traditional herbal medicines (THM) are widely used to manage arrhythmia in East Asia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of THM in the treatment of arrhythmia. METHOD Using a systematic review methodology, we searched for randomized clinical trials on herbal medicines for arrhythmia without complications in 4 databases up to September 2022. The literature search was carried out again, targeting papers published until April 2024.We conducted a risk-of-bias assessment and meta-analysis. This study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. RESULTS Eighty-two randomized clinical trials were included in this meta-analysis. Total effective rate was significantly better in unspecified arrhythmia (risk ratio [RR]: 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13-1.26), premature ventricular contraction (RR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.29-1.33), sinus bradycardia (RR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.17-1.36), tachycardia (RR: 1.23 95% CI: 1.15-1.32), and atrial fibrillation (RR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.07-1.27). No severe adverse events were associated with THM. The overall risk of bias was relatively high. The total effective rate was the most frequently assessed clinical outcome variable. Most outcomes were surrogates and not clinical endpoints. CONCLUSION THM, alone or in combination with Western medicine, has therapeutic effects on cardiac arrhythmic diseases. However, additional disease-specific clinical outcome variables are required for further studies on THM. Owing to the low quality of the included studies and their small sample sizes, additional large-scale, long-term follow-up, and well-designed randomized controlled clinical trials are required. Abstract
The relationship between heart failure and diabetes is intricate and bidirectional. Individuals with diabetes face an elevated risk of developing heart failure due to factors like insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and metabolic irregularities. Elevated blood sugar levels can harm blood vessels and nerves, culminating in the buildup of fatty deposits in arteries, atherosclerosis, and hypertension, which significantly contribute to heart failure. Furthermore, diabetes can adversely impact the structure and function of the heart muscle, impairing its pumping capacity. Conversely, heart failure can also contribute to the onset of diabetes by disrupting the body's metabolic processes and amplifying insulin resistance. The complex interaction between these conditions mandates a comprehensive approach to managing individuals with both diabetes and heart failure, underscoring the importance of addressing both aspects for enhanced patient outcomes. Although existing pharmacological treatments are limited and frequently associated with undesirable side effects, acupuncture has established itself as a traditional practice with a legacy. It remains a supplementary option for treating cardiovascular diseases. Heart failure and diabetes are both heavily associated with chronic upregulation of the sympathetic nervous system, which has been identified as a pivotal factor in the progression of disease. Mechanistic interplays such as the attenuation of central nitric oxide signaling may interfere with the production or availability of nitric oxide in key areas of the central nervous system, including the brainstem and hypothalamus. This review will delve into the current understanding of acupuncture on the autonomic nervous system and offer insights into its potential role in the future treatment landscape for diabetes and heart failure.

Abstract
This study used real-world data (RWD) to explore the long-term effects of East Asian traditional medicine (EATM) on heart failure (HF). A comprehensive search was conducted across five databases to identify relevant studies, which were then reviewed using the Arksey and O'Malley scoping review framework. The analysis focused on a descriptive examination of the long-term outcomes associated with EATM intervention. Methodologically, the study explored various aspects, including study subjects, interventions, applied clinical outcomes, and statistical methods. Out of 258 studies, 12 were selected. Eight studies involved patients with HF, while the others used HF as an outcome. Datasets from the National Health Insurance Research Database were used in Taiwan, while electronic medical record data were used in China and Japan. EATM interventions have been found to be associated with lower mortality and readmission rates. One study indicated that an increased dose of Fuzi, a botanical drug, or prompt use of Fuzi after diagnosis led to a decreased mortality hazard ratio. In two studies examining readmission rates, a significant increase was observed in the non-exposed group, with odds ratios of 1.28 and 1.18. Additionally, in patients with breast cancer, the subdistribution hazard ratio for the occurrence of doxorubicin-induced HF was reduced to 0.69. Although cohort studies with survival analysis were common, methodological flaws, such as issues with statistical methods and HF diagnosis, were identified. Despite these challenges, the study observed an association between EATM and improved clinical outcomes in patients with HF, emphasizing the potential of RWD studies to complement randomized controlled trials, especially for longer-term follow-ups. These results provide foundational data for future RWD research.

Abstract
Background Clinical studies have shown that electroacupuncture (EA) has therapeutic and modulatory effects on managing heart failure (HF) risk factors. Objective This study aimed to determine the impact of combination drugs and EA on chronic HF patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) to maintain a stable heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP). Materials and Methods This single-blind clinical randomized controlled trial included 42 patients with chronic HFrEF. The patients were divided into 3 groups: patients taking drugs and EA, patients taking drugs and sham EA (sham acupuncture [SA]), and patients taking drugs without EA. All patients underwent 16 sessions of therapy for 8 weeks. Results There was a significant difference in the average MAP based on therapy duration in the drugs + EA group, whereas there was no significant difference between drugs + SA and drugs without EA groups. There was a substantial difference between the average MAP in the drugs + EA group at the beginning of therapy compared with that at midtherapy (P < 0.05) and at the beginning of treatment and at the end of therapy (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the mean HR between the groups. Clinically, after 16 treatment sessions, patients receiving combined drugs and EA treatment presented with stable MAP and HR. Conclusions Drugs combined with EA maintained the stability of MAP and HR in patients with chronic HFrEF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Circulation dysfunction is a major contributing factor to thrombosis in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) for which effective interventions are lacking. Growing evidence indicates that regulating the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), an autonomic control center, could offer a novel strategy for treating cardiovascular and circulatory diseases. Concurrently, electroacupuncture (EA) at Xinshu (BL15), a form of peripheral nerve stimulation, has shown efficacy in treating several cardiovascular conditions, although its specific mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the impact of EA at BL15 on circulatory dysfunction in a rat AF model and investigate the pivotal role of PVN neuronal activity. METHODS To mimic the onset of AF, male SD rats received tail intravenous injection of ACh-CaCl2 and were then subjected to EA at BL15, sham EA, or EA at Shenshu (BL23). Macro- and micro-circulation function were evaluated using in vivo ultrasound imaging and laser doppler testing, respectively. Vasomotricity was assessed by measuring dimension changes during vascular relaxation and contraction. Vascular endothelial function was measured using myograph, and the activation of the autonomic nerve system was evaluated through nerve activity signals. Additionally, chemogenetic manipulation was used to block PVN neuronal activation to further elucidate the role of PVN activation in the prevention of AF-induced blood circulation dysfunction through EA treatment. RESULTS Our data demonstrate that EA at BL15, but not BL23 or sham EA, effectively prevented AF-induced macro- and micro-circulation dysfunction. Furthermore, EA at BL15 restored AF-induced vasomotricity impairment. Additionally, EA treatment prevented abnormal activation of the autonomic nerve system induced by AF, although it did not address vascular endothelial dysfunction. Importantly, excessive activation of PVN neurons negated the protective effects of EA treatment on AF-induced circulation dysfunction in rats. CONCLUSION These results indicate that EA treatment at BL15 modulates PVN neuronal activity and provides protection against AF-induced circulatory dysfunction.

Abstract
Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are commonly used across the world by diverse populations and ethnicities but remain largely unregulated. Although many CAM agents are purported to be efficacious and safe by the public, clinical evidence supporting the use of CAM in heart failure remains limited and controversial. Furthermore, health care professionals rarely inquire or document use of CAM as part of the medical record, and patients infrequently disclose their use without further prompting. The goal of this scientific statement is to summarize published efficacy and safety data for CAM and adjunctive interventional wellness approaches in heart failure. Furthermore, other important considerations such as adverse effects and drug interactions that could influence the safety of patients with heart failure are reviewed and discussed.

Abstract
The treatment of chronic stable heart failure (CSHF) with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine has been of wide concern. We mainly discuss the clinical efficacy of TCM decoction combined with acupuncture and moxibustion (A&M) in CSHF treatment on the basis of syndrome differentiation and treatment (SDT). The control group was given conventional cardiac rehabilitation (CCR), and the treatment group was given TCM decoction combined with A&M treatment based on SDT on the basis of conventional cardiac rehabilitation. The clinical efficacy and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) indicators were evaluated. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), NT-proBNP, myocardial ischemia threshold (MIT), and 6-minute walking distance (6MWD) were measured by ultrasound, ELISA, electrocardiogram, and 6MWD test. After treatment, the clinical efficacy, LVEF, and 6MWD of the treatment group were better than in the control group. The NT-proBNP plasma level and MIT in the treatment group were lower than in the control group. The treatment group had enhanced AT, VO2 Peak, VO2 Peak/HR, and Peak power and decreased resting systolic pressure and peak systolic pressure, and the difference was statistically significant. Dialectical comprehensive treatment of TCM could effectively improve cardiac function and clinical treatment effect, which was worthy of clinical application.

Abstract
Background Doxorubicin (DOX) is a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug but is limited in clinical applications by its cardiotoxicity. Neiguan acupoint (PC6) is a well-recognized acupoint for the treatment of cardiothoracic disease. However, whether acupuncture at PC6 could be effective in preventing DOX-induced cardiotoxicity is still unknown. Methods A set of experiments were performed with myocardial cells, wild type, inducible nitric oxide synthase knockout (iNOS-/-), and myocardial-specific ablation arginase 2 (Myh6-ARG 2-/-) mice. We investigated the protective effect and the underlying mechanisms for electroacupuncture (EA) against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by echocardiography, immunostaining, biochemical analysis, and molecular biotechnology in vivo and in vitro analysis. Results We found that DOX-mediated nitric oxide (NO) production was positively correlated with the iNOS level but has a negative correlation with the arginase 2 (ARG 2) level in both myocardial cells and tissues. Meanwhile, EA at PC6 alleviated cardiac dysfunction and cardiac hypertrophy in DOX-treated mice. EA at PC6 blocked the upregulation of NO production in accompanied with the downregulated iNOS and upregulated ARG 2 levels in myocardial tissue induced by DOX. Furthermore, knockout iNOS prevented cardiotoxicity and EA treatment did not cause the further improvement of cardiac function in iNOS-/- mice treated by DOX. In contrast, deficiency of myocardial ARG 2 aggravated DOX-induced cardiotoxicity and reduced EA protective effect. Conclusion These results suggest that EA treatment at PC6 can prevent DOX-induced cardiotoxicity through modulating NO production by modulating the iNOS/ARG 2 balance in myocardial cells.

Abstract
How moxibustion improves chronic heart failure is extremely complex and still unclear. This study aimed to explore whether moxibustion inhibits autophagy and reduces inflammation by regulating mTOR expression to induce myocardial protective effects and alleviate symptoms associated with chronic heart failure. Echocardiography was used to detect cardiac function and cardiac structure of rats, including heart rate (HR), left atrium diameter (LA), left ventricular diameter (LV), left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW), interventricular septum (IVS), ejection fraction (EF), and fractional shortening (FS). BNP and NT-pro BNP levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Autophagy-associated protein (ATG) genes and mTOR were detected by PCR. The expression of mTOR and phosphorylated-mTOR was detected through western blotting of proteins from myocardial tissue samples. The left ventricular inflammatory response was detected by immunohistochemistry and included ICAM-1, VCAM-1, MMP-2, and MMP-9 expression. The relationship between autophagy and inflammation was analyzed by correlation analysis. The results from echocardiography and ELISA showed that moxibustion could significantly improve heart function and structure. Western blot and PCR results showed that moxibustion treatment elevated mTOR expression. Further, moxibustion could inhibit autophagy and regulate the expression of key autophagy-related genes, including Vps34, ATG3, ATG5, ATG7, ATG12, and ATG13. By contrast, rapamycin could partially reduce the effects of moxibustion. Immunohistochemistry results indicated that moxibustion could reduce myocardial inflammation. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between autophagy and inflammation. Moxibustion can protect cardiac function in rats with heart failure, possibly inhibiting excessive autophagy of cardiomyocytes and reducing inflammatory reactions through the elevation of mTOR expression.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients with angina pectoris (AP) often experience heavy psychological distress, especially anxiety and depression, which results in poorer quality of life, shorter survival time. Acupoint therapies, including massage, acupuncture, acupoints injection, acupressure, and moxibustion, showed clinical and long-lasting benefits for AP, but the efficiency of acupoint therapies was poorly evaluated. The current review is attempted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the different acupoint-based therapies for AP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A literature search will be conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Science Direct, Wan Fang Data Knowledge Service Platform, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP database), and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Observational studies regarding the association between liver cancer and depression and anxiety written in English or Chinese will be included. Study inclusion, data extraction, and quality assessment will be performed independently by 2 reviewers. We will use RevMan V.5.0 and STATA V.12.0 software for statistical analysis. The I2 test will be used to identify the extent of heterogeneity. Publication bias will be assessed by generating a funnel plot and performing the Begg and Egger test. The quality of the systematic review will be evaluated using the Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) and Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria. With the permitted numeric data, we will carry out a meta-analysis. RESULTS This study will provide a high-quality synthesis of pain VAS and functional disability or the quality of life, the success treatment rate, the recurrent rate and the complications rate to assess the effectiveness and safety of acupoint for AP patients. This systematic review will provide evidence to judge whether acupoint is an effective intervention for patients with AP. CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis will provide evidence to judge whether acupoint is an effective intervention for patients with AP and provide evidence for designing early targeted interventions for high-risk survivors that can attenuate negative reactions. Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the effects of electro-acupuncture (EA) on glycemic control, myocardial inflammation, and the progression of diabetic cardiomyopathy in mice with type 2 diabetes. METHODS Db/Db mice received EA at PC6+ST36 (DM-Acu), non-acupoint simulation (DM-Sham), or no treatment (DM). EA was applied for 30 min per day, 5 days a week for 4 weeks. Heart function was assessed by echocardiography. Myocardium was assessed by RT-PCR, immunoblotting, and histology. Serum TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 were measured. RESULTS DM-Acu, but not DM-Sham, reduced fasting blood glucose without affecting body weight. DM decreased systolic function. DM-Acu, but not DM-Sham, attenuated the decrease in systolic function. Heart weight was significantly smaller in the DM-Acu than in the DM and DM-Sham groups. Percent fibrosis and apoptosis were reduced in the DM-Acu, but not the DM-Sham, group. Serum levels of IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, ICAM-1, MCP-1, and TNF-α were significantly lower in the DM-Acu than in the DM or DM-Sham groups. Protein levels of P-Akt and P-AMPK and mRNA levels of phosphoinositide-3-kinase regulatory subunit 6 (PIK3r6) were significantly higher in the DM-Acu group. Myocardial mRNA and protein levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) were significantly lower in the DM and DM-Sham groups compared with the DM-Acu group. CONCLUSIONS EA reduced serum glucose; prevented DM-induced hypertrophy and deterioration of systolic function, inflammation, and fibrosis; and restored IGF1R, P-Akt, and P-AMPK levels in mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Background Acupuncture and moxibustion (A&M) has been used for treating heart failure in China since the Han Dynasty. This ancient therapy can be applied to many diseases according to the WHO recommendations. Although there are many clinical reports on the treatment of heart failure by A&M, its effectiveness is still not fully demonstrated. We aimed to systematically review the related randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies and conduct a meta-analysis. Methods The PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CENTRAL, CNKI, Wanfang, and Weipu databases were searched electronically until December 2018. The data were extracted, and the risk of bias was evaluated. Meta-analysis, subgroup analysis, and metaregression were performed. Heart function was the main outcome assessed. The details of the intervention were also investigated. Results Thirty-two RCTs involving 2499 patients were included. Most studies had an unclear risk regarding blinding and allocation concealment. Compared with the traditional treatment group, the experimental group had a higher efficacy rate (odds ratio (OR) = 2.61, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): = [1.84; 3.72], I2 = 0%, p < 0.0001) and a significantly improved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (mean difference (MD) = 6.34, 95%CI = [4.11, 8.57], I2 = 93%, p < 0.0001), cardiac output (CO) (MD = 1.02, 95%CI = [0.65, 1.39], I2 = 94%, p < 0.0001), 6-minute walk test (6MWT) (MD = 43.6, 95%CI = [37.43, 49.77], I2 = 0%, p < 0.0001), and reduced brain-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) (MD = −227.99, 95%CI = [−337.30, −118.68], I2 = 96%, p < 0.0001). Adverse events were inadequately reported in most studies. Conclusions A&M may be a promising intervention as an adjunctive therapy to medication for treating heart failure. However, the evidence was inconclusive. Further large and rigorously designed RCTs are needed for verification.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of patients with stable angina pectoris. Methods A literature search was performed in nine databases, including PubMed and the Cochrane Library, from their inception to 30 August 2018. Randomized controlled trials that compared acupuncture therapy with sham acupuncture or no treatment were included. Two reviewers under the guidance of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines assessed the eligibility of each record and extracted essential information independently. The data were merged using a fixed-effect model. Results Pooled analysis of 17 eligible trials with 1516 participants showed that acupuncture was associated with reduced angina attack frequency (–4.91; 95% confidence interval, –6.01– –3.82; p < 0.00001) and improved depression (–1.23; 95% confidence interval, –1.47– –1.00; p < 0.00001) and anxiety level (–0.96; 95% confidence interval, –1.16– –0.75; p < 0.00001) relative to sham treatment or standard care alone. No increased risk of adverse events was observed during treatment (relative risk, 0.70; 95% confidence interval, 0.33–1.48; p = 0.35). No significant improvement was shown in nitroglycerin use or angina intensity. The included studies were associated with unclear to high risk of selection or performance bias, and the quality of evidence was low to moderate. Conclusions Acupuncture may safely and effectively improve physical restrictions, emotional distress, and attack frequency in patients with stable angina pectoris. However, angina intensity and medication use were not reduced. Studies with adequate blinding and a valid sham control group are still warranted due to the current low quality of evidence.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Head and neck cancer patients are at a high risk to suffer from malnourishment, a risk that increases in postoperative condition and with the use of enteral nutrition (EN). Until now patients who are suffering from indigestion in the intensive care unit (ICU) received treatment in the form of prokinetic drugs, drugs that can lead to serious side effects and only can partially improve digestion functions. Acupuncture was used successfully in several clinical trials to improve postoperative indigestion in cancer patients without any reported adverse events. The study aims are to investigate acupuncture effect in combination with prokinetic drugs in the treatment of indigestion in postoperative oral and hypopharyngeal cancer patients in the ICU. METHODS Single-center, double-blind randomized control trial will compare between 2 equal groups. A total of 28 patients that will meet the inclusion criteria: age 30 to 80, postplastic surgery for oral cancer or hypopharyngeal cancer, developed feeding intolerance 2 times in the first postoperative day, Apache score <20, and needed EN. Patients will be randomly divided (1:1) into treatment group or control group for 3 treatments in 3 days along with routine ICU treatment. The main outcome measurement will be the number of days a patient needs to reach his total energy expenditure. EXPECTED OUTCOME The results will shed light on the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture in a double-blind design treating postoperative ICU cancer patients. In addition, the study presents a revolutionary double-blind design that if, will prove as successful might influence the way double-blind acupuncture studies are performed today. OTHER INFORMATION The study will be conducted in the surgical ICU department, of China medical university hospital, Taichung 404, Taiwan. The study is conducted on stable ICU patients and is anticipated to have minimum risk for adverse events. Patients enrollment and data collection will start from May 15, 2019. The study expected completion time: June 2021.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pharmacoacupuncture is a new acupuncture treatment that stimulates acupuncture points by injecting herbal medicine into them. Recently, pharmacoacupuncture has been widely used in the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson's disease in traditional East Asian medicine. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pharmacoacupuncture in the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson's disease. METHODS The following electronic databases were searched for studies published in or before December 2016: Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE, OASIS, and CNKI, without language restriction. The main outcome assessed was the total Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score. The details of the pharmacoacupuncture intervention, such as the herbal medicine and acupuncture points used, were also investigated. RESULTS From 138 studies, 3 randomized controlled trials were included; the number of patients analyzed was 134. Most of the studies showed considerable methodological flaws. There was heterogeneity of the intervention type and treatment duration in the included studies. Therefore, we could not conduct a meta-analysis. In one study, adjunctive bee venom pharmacoacupuncture therapy significantly improved total UPDRS scores compared with conventional therapy alone. Another study, which used adjunctive Kakkonein pharmacoacupuncture, did not reveal significant improvement compared with conventional therapy alone. A third study reported that Mailuoning pharmacoacupuncture was able to significantly improve the modified Webster Symptom Score when compared with no treatment. Adverse events related to the pharmacoacupuncture were reported in only one case, itching caused by the bee venom. CONCLUSIONS Our findings regarding the efficacy of pharmacoacupuncture as a therapy for idiopathic Parkinson's disease are currently inconclusive. Further large and rigorous clinical trials are needed.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of electroacupuncture in the treatment of acute decompensated heart failure compared with sham electroacupuncture. Methods This protocol is for a randomized, sham controlled, patient- and assessor-blinded, parallel group, single center clinical trial that can overcome the limitations of previous trials examining acupuncture and heart failure. Forty-four acute decompensated heart failure patients admitted to the cardiology ward will be randomly assigned into the electroacupuncture treatment group (n = 22) or the sham electroacupuncture control group (n = 22). Participants will receive electroacupuncture treatment for 5 days of their hospital stay. The primary outcome of this study is the difference in total diuretic dose between the two groups during hospitalization. On the day of discharge, follow-up heart rate variability, routine blood tests, cardiac biomarkers, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level, and N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) level will be assessed. Four weeks after discharge, hs-CRP, NT-pro BNP, heart failure symptoms, quality of life, and a pattern identification questionnaire will be used for follow-up analysis. Six months after discharge, major cardiac adverse events and cardiac function measured by echocardiography will be assessed. Adverse events will be recorded during every visit. Discussion The result of this clinical trial will offer evidence of the effectiveness and safety of electroacupuncture for acute decompensated heart failure. Abstract
We attempted to investigate cardioprotection of electroacupuncture (EA) for enhanced recovery after surgery on patients undergoing heart valve replacement with cardiopulmonary bypass. Forty-four patients with acquired heart valve replacement were randomly allocated to the EA group or the control group. Patients in the EA group received EA stimulus at bilateral Neiguan (PC6), Ximen (PC4), Shenting (GV24), and Baihui (GV20) acupoints twenty minutes before anesthesia induction to the end of surgery. The primary end point was cardioprotection effect of electroacupuncture postoperatively and the secondary endpoints were quality of recovery and cognitive functioning postoperatively. The present study demonstrated that electroacupuncture reduced the occurrence of complications and played a role of cardioprotective effect on patients after heart valve replacement surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, and it benefits patients more comfortable and contributes to recovery after surgery.
