Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a global pandemic in 2019. It remains uncertain to what extent COVID-19 effects the heart in heathy individuals. To evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 on cardiac structure and function in middle-aged and older individuals. METHODS A single-centre prospective observational study enroled a total of 124 participants (84 with history of COVID-19 [COVID-19 group] and 40 without a history of COVID-19 [non-COVID group]). All participants underwent echocardiography with speckle tracking to assess cardiac structure and function at rest and during peak exercise. RESULTS There were no differences in left and right ventricular diastolic function (p ≥ 0.05) between the COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 groups. Participants in COVID-19 group demonstrated higher left ventricular mass (130 ± 39.8 vs. 113 ± 27.2 g, p = 0.008) and relative wall thickness (0.38 ± 0.07 vs. 0.36 ± 0.13, p = 0.049). Left ventricular global longitudinal strain was reduced in the COVID-19 group at rest and at peak-exercise (rest: 18.3 ± 2.01 vs. 19.3 ± 1.53%, p = 0.004; peak exercise: 19.1 ± 2.20 vs. 21.0 ± 1.58%, p ≤ 0.001). However, no difference was seen in resting left ventricular ejection fraction (58 ± 2.89 vs. 59 ± 2.51%, p = 0.565) between groups. Right ventricular fractional area change was reduced in the COVID-19 group (p = 0.012). CONCLUSION Cardiac structural and functional remodelling was observed in middle-aged and older otherwise healthy individuals with a history of COVID-19.

Abstract
Introduction Covid-19 patients can have both regional and global ventricular dysfunction. We aim to study the spectrum of myocardial involvement in Covid-19 patients on echocardiography. Methods This is a single center, observational study where wall motion abnormality patterns were studied in Covid-19 patients along with global and regional longitudinal strain analysis (GLS). Results 30 Covid-19 patients were included in the study, with a mean age of 35.3±6.4 years. Echocardiography revealed characteristic wall motion abnormality involving hypokinesia of anterolateral and apical segments, which produced an operculum like appearance in all patients. Strain derived ejection fraction(EF) was lower in 4 chamber as compared to 2 chamber indicating regional myocardial dysfunction. Reduced GLS values in presence of normal EF indicates global systolic function impairment. Endocardial effacement was also noted in these segments along with stretching of interventricular septum. Conclusion Specific myocardial involvement pattern can be detected on echocardiography, thus helping in diagnosis of Covid myocarditis.

Abstract
Background The current study aimed to examine the association between baseline clinical and echocardiographic parameters with new-onset coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Methodology We retrospectively enrolled consecutive hospitalized patients from our center during the national outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Overall, 100 patients were enrolled, including 38 patients with COVID-19 infection. Results Compared with those without infection, patients with COVID-19 infection were more likely male (63.2% vs. 35.5%, p = 0.008), were older (59.08 vs. 52.35 years, p = 0.022), had higher heart failure (31.6% vs. 11.3%, p = 0.018) and hypertension (52.6% vs. 30.6%, p = 0.036) rates, had lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (61.16% vs. 65.76%, p = 0.018), had higher A-wave velocity (86.84 vs. 73.63 cm/s, p = 0.003), and had and lower E/A ratio (0.85 vs 1.04, p = 0.015). On univariate and multivariate analysis, baseline echocardiographic parameters (LVEF and A-wave velocity) were independent risk factors for COVID-19 infection. There were no significant changes in echocardiographic parameters during the one-month follow-up period in patients infected and not infected with COVID-19. Conclusions In conclusion, baseline echocardiographic parameters were significantly associated with acute COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
A young competitive athlete undergoes the diagnostic investigations protocol before returning to competitive practice (return to play protocol) after COVID-19 infection. Despite the paucisymptomatic presentation of COVID-19 infection and the absence of relevant anomalies in standard first-level diagnostic investigations, echocardiographic examination findings especially speckle tracking analysis (global longitudinal strain) along with some clinical aspects suggested further second-level investigations eventually allowing the identification of inflammatory myocardial damage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of left ventricular global longitudinal strain (GLS) and left atrial reservoir strain (LARS) on adverse events in chronic coronary artery disease (CAD) patients with reduced systolic function. METHODS A total of 192 consecutive patients clinically diagnosed with chronic CAD and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 50% were finally included. Multiple strain parameters were analyzed with speckle tracking echocardiography. The composite endpoint included all-cause mortality, rehospitalization due to heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke. RESULTS Patients experiencing the endpoint showed lower LVEF, lower absolute GLS and LARS than those without events. Both GLS (AUC = 0.82 [GLS] vs. 0.58 [LVEF], p < 0.001) and LARS (AUC = 0.71 [LARS] vs. 0.58 [LVEF], p = 0.033) were superior to LVEF in predicting adverse events. Multivariate cox regression analysis showed that both GLS (hazard ratio, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.63-0.79; p < 0.001) and LARS (hazard ratio, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.93-0.98; p < 0.001) were independent predictors for the endpoint. The addition of LARS (global chi-squared, 35.7 vs. 17.4; p < 0.05), GLS (global chi-squared, 58.6 vs. 17.4; p < 0.05) or both LARS and GLS (global chi-squared, 79.6 vs. 17.4; p < 0.05) to LVEF in the prediction model significantly improved its performance. The same significant improvement was also shown in the subgroups of mild (30% < LVEF ≤ 50%) and severe (LVEF ≤ 30%) reduced systolic function. CONCLUSIONS Regarding CAD patients with reduced LVEF, both GLS and LARS are superior to LVEF in predicting adverse events, providing significant incremental value to LVEF.

Abstract
Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) might be associated with cardiac injury as a part of multisystem affection in response to cytokine storms. However, left ventricular (LV) function appears preserved in most of the cases, whereas subtle LV dysfunction might happen in others. Hence, we tried to detect subtle LV dysfunction in patients with COVID-19 using global longitudinal strain (GLS). Patients and Methods We performed a single-center observational study on 90 stable patients who were recently recovered from mild to moderate COVID-19 infections. A transthoracic echocardiographic examination was done for all patients, and GLS assessment was used as an indicator of LV function. Results The population age ranged from 27 to 66 years, and the majority of patients were males (54, 73.3%). Besides, 46.7% of the included patients were smokers, 33.3% had hypertension, and 23.3% were diabetics. All the patients had normal LV internal dimensions and ejection fractions. However, 33.3% of them had subclinical LV dysfunction as expressed by reduced GLS. There was no statistically significant correlation between GLS and age, gender, or other risk factors, whereas troponin and C-reactive protein significantly correlated with GLS. Conclusions Recovered patients from recent mild to moderate COVID-19 infections might show subtle LV dysfunction as manifested by reduced GLS.

Abstract
Post-COVID-19 condition refers to a range of persisting physical, neurocognitive, and neuropsychological symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Recent evidence revealed that post-COVID-19 syndrome patients may suffer from cardiac dysfunction and are at increased risk for a broad range of cardiovascular disorders. This randomized, sham-control, double-blind trial evaluated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on the cardiac function of post-COVID-19 patients with ongoing symptoms for at least three months after confirmed infection. Sixty patients were randomized to receive 40 daily HBOT or sham sessions. They underwent echocardiography at baseline and 1-3 weeks after the last protocol session. Twenty-nine (48.3%) patients had reduced global longitudinal strain (GLS) at baseline. Of them, 13 (43.3%) and 16 (53.3%) were allocated to the sham and HBOT groups, respectively. Compared to the sham group, GLS significantly increased following HBOT (- 17.8 ± 1.1 to - 20.2 ± 1.0, p = 0.0001), with a significant group-by-time interaction (p = 0.041). In conclusion, post-COVID-19 syndrome patients despite normal EF often have subclinical left ventricular dysfunction that is characterized by mildly reduced GLS. HBOT promotes left ventricular systolic function recovery in patients suffering from post COVID-19 condition. Further studies are needed to optimize patient selection and evaluate long-term outcomes.This study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT04647656 on 01/12/2020.

Abstract
Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) has become an established, widely available diagnostic method in the past few years, making its value clear in cases of COVID-19 and the further course of the disease, including post-COVID syndrome. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many studies have been published on the use of STE in this condition, enabling, on the one hand, a better understanding of myocardial involvement in COVID-19 and, on the other, a better identification of risk to patients, although some questions remain unanswered in regard to specific pathomechanisms, especially in post-COVID patients. This review takes a closer look at current findings and potential future developments by summarising the extant data on the use of STE, with a focus on left and right ventricular longitudinal strain.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by multi-organ involvement, including respiratory and cardiac events. Echocardiography is widely considered the first-choice tool for the evaluation of cardiac structures and function because of its reproducibility, feasibility, easy to use at bedside, and for good cost-effectiveness. The aim of our literature review is to define the utility of echocardiography in the prediction of prognosis and mortality in COVID-19 patients with mild to critical respiratory illness, with or without known cardiovascular disease. Moreover, we focused our attention on classical echocardiographic parameters and the use of speckle tracking to predict the evolution of respiratory involvement. Finally, we tried to explore the possible relationship between pulmonary disease and cardiac manifestations.

Abstract
Cardiovascular injuries induced by SARS CoV-2 have been reported repeatedly in various studies. Therefore, it is necessary to understand cardiac complications at a low cost, quickly. This study aimed to determine the relationship between cardiological parameters and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in patients with coronavirus infection. : Patients who were admitted to the emergency department due to the ongoing pandemic, all patients with similar symptoms to coronavirus disease 2019 infection were initially admitted to the respiratory emergency room and underwent subsequent evaluations to confirm or rule out SARS-COV2 infection symptoms were assessed for eligibility. Patient were categorized into 2 groups 1. Positive PCR and negative PCR groups. Binary logistic regression was performed to assess the effect of several factors on the likelihood of developing positive troponin, reduced ejection fraction (EF), and Positive brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). Among 195 patients included, 115 (58.9%) had positive PCR. Patient in the positive PCR and negative PCR were 58.04 ± 18.03 and 59.19 ± 15.38 years of age, respectively. Patients in the "positive PCR" were significantly less likely to have chronic kidney disease (6.69% vs 17.5%, P value: .022), consume calcium channel blockers (6.69% vs 18.75%, P value:0.012). At the univariable level, positive PCR was significantly associated with fewer odds for positive BNP (OR:0.46, P = .019); nevertheless, the association was no longer significant after adjusting for confounders (adjusted OR:0.56, P = .158). Unadjusted positive PCR results were not found to have a significant association with positive troponin or reduced EF. Likewise, multivariable regression revealed no association between positive PCR and positive troponin (aOR:1.28, P = .529) and reduced EF (aOR:0.65, P = .369). PCR positivity did not result in positive troponin and BNP and did not appear to decrease EF. In other words, serial troponin and BNP checks and initial echocardiography in coronavirus disease 2019 respiratory emergencies do not make significant differences in diagnostic and therapeutic management and inpatient outcomes of patients with positive or negative PCR and are not specific findings. Evidence suggests some coronavirus-induced cardiac complications will be manifested in the long term.

Abstract
Background Myocardial strain assessed with speckle tracking echocardiography is a sensitive marker of cardiac dysfunction. Both left‐ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV‐GLS) and right ventricular longitudinal strain (RV‐LS) were affected by severe SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. However, data about cardiac involvement in patients with asymptomatic/mild Coronavirus disease‐19 (COVID‐19) is still lacking. Aim To evaluate myocardial function using LV‐GLS and RV‐LS in patients with previous asymptomatic/mild COVID‐19. Methods Forty young adults without previously known comorbidities/cardiovascular risk factors and with a confirmed diagnosis of asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic SARS‐CoV‐2 infection were retrospectively included. A 2D‐transthoracic echocardiogram with speckle tracking analysis was performed at least 3 months after the diagnosis. Forty healthy subjects, matched for age, sex, and body surface area in a 1:1 ratio were used as the control group. Results Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and RV‐LS were comparable between the two groups. LV‐GLS was significantly lower in the cases compared to the control group (−22.7 ± 1.6% vs. −25.7 ± 2.3%; p < .001). Moreover, the prevalence of regional peak systolic strain below −16% in at least two segments was three times higher in patients with previous COVID‐19 compared to controls (30% vs. 10%, p = .02). In multivariable logistic regression, previous COVID‐19 infection was independently associated with reduced LV‐GLS values (p < .001). Conclusion SARS‐CoV‐2 infection may affect left ventricular deformation in 30% of young adult patients despite an asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic acute illness. Speckle‐tracking echocardiography could help early identification of patients with subclinical cardiac involvement, with potential repercussions on risk stratification and management.

Abstract
COVID-19 could have a direct or indirect effect on the cardiovascular system. To detect cardiac involvement, transthoracic echocardiography is highly recommended. Considering the risk of equipment contamination and personnel exposure, mainly focused echocardiographic evaluations instead of complete examination are recommended and the use of portable devices easy to disinfect with offline reporting is highly suggested. COVID-19 could affect different sections of the heart and it is useful to analyze them separately during an echocardiographic examination. Available echocardiographic data on COVID-19 patients are scarce and do not provide definite evidence and more studies are certainly needed to better evaluate this topic.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 virus can not only damage the respiratory system but may also pose a threat to other organs, such as the heart or vessels. This review focuses on cardiovascular complications of COVID-19, including acute cardiac injury, arrhythmias, biomarkers, accompanying comorbidities and outcomes in patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The research was conducted on the databases: PubMed, Springer, ScienceDirect, UpToDate, Oxford Academic, Wiley Online Library, ClinicalKey. Fifty-six publications from 1 November 2020 till 15 August 2021 were included in this study. The results show that cardiac injury is present in about 1 in 4 patients with COVID-19 disease, and it is an independent risk factor, which multiplies the death rate several times in comparison to infected patients without myocardial injury. New-onset cardiac injury occurs in nearly every 10th patient of the COVID-19-suffering population. Comorbidities (such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes) severely deteriorate the outcome. Therefore, patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection should be carefully assessed in terms of cardiac medical history and possible cardiological complications.

Abstract
Cardiac involvement has been frequently reported in COVID-19 as responsible of increased morbidity and mortality. Given the importance of right heart function in acute and chronic respiratory diseases, its assessment in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients may add prognostic accuracy. Transthoracic echocardiography has been proposed to early predict myocardial injury and risk of death in hospitalized patients. This systematic review presents the up-to-date sum of literature regarding right ventricle ultrasound assessment. We evaluated commonly used echocardiographic parameters to assess RV function and discussed their relationship with pathophysiological mechanisms involved in COVID-19. We searched Medline and Embase for studies that used transthoracic echocardiography for right ventricle assessment in patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
Hundreds of millions got infected, and millions have died worldwide and still the number of cases is rising.Chest radiographs and computed tomography (CT) are useful for imaging the lung but their use in infectious diseases is limited due to hygiene and availability.Lung ultrasound has been shown to be useful in the context of the pandemic, providing clinicians with valuable insights and helping identify complications such as pleural effusion in heart failure or bacterial superinfections. Moreover, lung ultrasound is useful for identifying possible complications of procedures, in particular, pneumothorax.Associations between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and cardiac complications, such as acute myocardial infarction and myocarditis, have been reported. As such, point of care echocardiography as well as a comprehensive approach in later stages of the disease provide important information for optimally diagnosing and treating complications of COVID-19.In our experience, lung ultrasound in combination with echocardiography, has a great impact on treatment decisions. In the acute state as well as in the follow-up setting after a severe or critical state of COVID-19, ultrasound can be of great impact to monitor the progression and regression of disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Survivors of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) associated pneumonia may show exercise-induced desaturation. We wondered whether these individuals show physiologic and symptom characteristics similar to individuals with chronic respiratory diseases with exercise-induced desaturation, namely COPD or interstitial lung diseases (ILD). We evaluated lung function, exercise capacity, and symptoms in these individuals compared with individuals with COPD or ILD and exercise-induced desaturation. METHODS Survivors of COVID-19 associated pneumonia (study individuals), normoxemic at rest with exercise-induced desaturation, underwent assessment of dyspnea, dynamic lung volumes, carbon monoxide diffusion capacity, and the 6-min walk test. Data of individuals with COPD or with ILD and exercise-induced desaturation were also retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS FVC was lower in individuals with COVID-19 or ILD than in those with COPD. Individuals who had COVID-19 walked < 70% of predicted and, as a whole, had a 6-min walk test performance similar to individuals with ILD but walked significantly less, showed more severe leg fatigue and dyspnea during exercise, and more exercise-induced desaturation than individuals with COPD. CONCLUSIONS Survivors of COVID-19 associated pneumonia, who were normoxemic at rest with exercise-induced desaturation, had alterations in lung function, exercise capacity, and symptoms similar to individuals with ILD but more severe than individuals with COPD and exercise-induced desaturation.

Abstract
COVID-19 has shown significant morbidity with the involvement of multiple systems, including the cardiovascular system. Cardiovascular manifestations in the acute phase can include myocardial injury itself, myocardial infarction, venous thromboembolic events, myocarditis, Takotsubo syndrome, and different arrhythmic events. Myocardial injury defined by the rise of cardiac biomarkers in blood has been found in multiple studies with a prevalence of about 20%. Its presence is related to worse clinical outcomes and in-hospital mortality. The mechanisms of myocardial injury have been the subject of intense research but still need to be clarified. The characterization of the cardiac affectation with echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance has found mixed results in different studies, with a striking incidence of imaging criteria for myocarditis. Regarding post-acute and chronic follow-up results, the persistence of symptoms and imaging changes in recovered COVID-19 patients has raised concerns about the duration and the possible significance of these findings. Even though the knowledge about this disease has increased incredibly in the last year, many aspects are still unclear and warrant further research.

Abstract
Objectives During acute infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, myocardial involvement has been demonstrated; it is unknown if cardiovascular sequelae in patients recovered from this infection and if these are associated with global morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to compare myocardial deformation in patients recovered from mild SARS-CoV-2 virus infection with healthy controls. Materials and methods This was a cross-sectional observational study that included 33 subjects recovered from mild SARS-CoV-2 infection, who were diagnosed in the previous three to six months, and 31 healthy volunteers, both groups free of cardiovascular risk factors. The study of myocardial deformation was performed using echocardiography with the speckle tracking modality. Clinical and anthropometric variables were compared. Results The 2D global longitudinal strain of the left ventricle was lower in the subjects recovered from mild SARS-CoV-2 infection than the controls (-20.2% ± 2.6 v -21.6% ± 2.4; p: 0.036). Both groups presented differences in the three ventricular levels, significant at the apical level (-21.2 ± 4.0 vs -23.4% ± 4.2; p: 0.044). The effect by levels shows an inverse Takotsubo pattern. The left ventricular ejection fraction was preserved in both groups (p: 0.153). Conclusions Left ventricular myocardial deformation is affected in subjects recovered from mild SARS-CoV-2 infection, while the ejection fraction was found in normal ranges. Our study shows a potential role of global longitudinal strain in the detection of subclinical myocardial alterations in patients who had SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
The cardiac sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a worldwide global pandemic, are still uncertain, particularly in the asymptomatic, low cardiac risk outpatient population. This study aims to evaluate the asymptomatic, low cardiac risk out-patient population who recently recovered from COVID-19, using 2-D left ventricular-global longitudinal strain (LV-GLS) proven to be capable of detecting subclinical myocardial injury. Out of 305 COVID-19 positive patients, 70 asymptomatic out-patients were determined as the study group and 70 age and sex-matched healthy adults as the control group. The echocardiographic examination was performed with the Philips IE33 system, and LV-GLS was measured using commercially available software QLAB 9 (cardiac motion quantification; Philips Medical Systems). The absolute value of LV-GLS ≤ 18 did deem to be impaired LV-GLS. The absolute value of LV-GLS was statistically significantly lower in the COVID-19 group than in healthy controls (19.17 ± 2.65 vs. 20.07 ± 2.19, p = 0.03). The correlation between having recovered from COVID-19 and impaired LV-GLS (≤18) did detect with the Pearson correlation test (p = 0.02). Having recovered from COVID-19 was found as a predictor for detecting impaired LV-GLS (≤18) in the multivariable logistic regression analysis (odds ratio, 0.133 (0.038-0.461); 95% CI, p = 0.001). This study suggests that COVID-19 may cause subclinical LV dysfunction detected by LV-GLS during early recovery even in a population of patients at low cardiac risk, asymptomatic, and recovered with home quarantine. The study findings indicate that the long-term cardiovascular follow-up of these patients may be more important than thought.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The manifestations of COVID-19 as outlined by imaging modalities such as echocardiography, lung ultrasound (LUS), and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging are not fully described. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of the current literature and included studies that described cardiovascular manifestations of COVID-19 using echocardiography, CMR, and pulmonary manifestations using LUS. We queried PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science for relevant articles. Original studies and case series were included. RESULTS This review describes the most common abnormalities encountered on echocardiography, LUS, and CMR in patients infected with COVID-19.
