Effect of food processing organic matter on photocatalytic bactericidal activity of titanium dioxide (TiO2)

Biopersistence rate of metallic nanoparticles in the gastro-intestinal human tract (stage 0 of the EFSA guidance for nanomaterials risk assessment)

The European Food Safety Authority has published a guidance regarding risk assessment of nanomaterials in food and feed. Following these recommendations, an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion has been applied to study the biopersistence of TiO₂ and Ag NPs in standards, molluscs and surimi. TiO₂ NPs standards and TiO₂ NPs/ TiO₂ microparticles from E171 were not found to be degraded. Ag NPs proved to be more degradable than TiO₂ NPs, but the biopersistence rates were higher than 12%, which means that Ag NPs are also biopersistent. Findings for seafood are quite similar to those obtained for TiO₂ NPs and Ag NPs standards, although the calculation of the biopersistence rate proposed by the EFSA was not found to be straightforward for foodstuff (the use of the NPs concentration in the sample instead of the NPs concentration at initial time (sample mixed with the gastric solution before enzymatic hydrolysis) has been proposed.

Photocatalysis and degradation products identification of deoxynivalenol in wheat using upconversion nanoparticles@TiO2 composite

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the most common contaminants of cereal grains. Efficient and environmental-friendly technology to eliminate DON is important for food safety and environmental protection. In this work, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysts were synthesized. Then, a photocatalytic experiment was performed to test the impact of NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 of DON degradation. Our results showed the DON degradation rate at 10 μg/mL under simulated sunlight using NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 (6 mg/mL) approached 100% within 60 min at pH 8.0. UPLC-Q-TOF MS was used to monitor the degradation process and three degradation products were identified, namely C15H20O8, C15H20O7 and C15H20O5. Subsequently, we studied the photocatalytic degradation of DON in wheat, providing a theoretical basis for photocatalytic degradation of contaminated grain samples. This study demonstrated that UCNP@TiO2 photocatalysis has the potential for detoxification in food security applications.

A comprehensive review on the use of second generation TiO2 photocatalysts: Microorganism inactivation

Photocatalytic disinfection practices have been applied for decades and attract current interest along with the developments in synthesis of novel photocatalysts. A survey based investigation was performed for elucidation of photocatalytic treatment details as well as disinfection mechanism of microorganisms. The present work brings significant information on the utilization of second generation TiO₂ photocatalysts for inactivation of microorganisms typically using E. coli as the model microorganism. Special interest was devoted to the role of organic matrix either generated during treatment or as a natural component. Studies on photocatalytic disinfection were extensively reviewed and evaluated with respect to basic operational parameters related to photocatalysis, and types and properties of microorganisms investigated. Degradation mechanism and behavior of microorganisms towards reactive oxygen species during disinfection and organic matrix effects were also addressed. For successful utilization and effective assessment of visible light active photocatalysts, standard protocols for disinfection activity testing have to be set. Further improvement of the efficiency of these materials would be promising for future applications in water treatment processes.

Using Photocatalyst Metal Oxides as Antimicrobial Surface Coatings to Ensure Food Safety-Opportunities and Challenges

Cross-contamination of foods with pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites may occur at any point in the farm to fork continuum. Food contact and nonfood contact surfaces are the most frequent source of microbial cross-contamination. In the wake of new and emerging food safety challenges, including antibiotic-resistant human pathogens, conventional sanitation and disinfection practices may not be sufficient to ensure safe food processing, proper preparation, and also not be environmentally friendly. Nanotechnology-enabled novel food safety interventions have a great potential to mitigate the risk of microbial cross-contamination in the food chain. Especially engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) are increasingly finding novel applications as antimicrobial agents. Among various ENPs, photocatalyst metal oxides have shown great promise as effective nontargeted disinfectants over a wide range of microorganisms. The present review provides an overview of antimicrobial properties of various photocatalyst metal oxides and their potential applications as surface coatings. Further, this review discusses the most common approaches to developing antimicrobial coatings, methods to characterize, test, and evaluate antimicrobial efficacy as well as the physical stability of the coatings. Finally, regulations and challenges concerning the use of these novel photocatalytic antimicrobial coatings are also discussed.
