A noninvasive evaluation of autonomic nervous system dysfunction in women with an overactive bladder

Skin sympathetic nerve activity as a potential biomarker for overactive bladder

PURPOSE

Abnormalities in autonomic function are associated with an overactive bladder (OAB). Heart rate variability is generally used as the sole assessment of autonomic activity; however, we utilized neuECG, a novel method of recording skin electrical signals, to assess autonomic nervous function in healthy controls and patients with OAB before and after treatment.

METHODS

The prospective sample included 52 participants: 23 patients newly diagnosed with OAB and 29 controls. Autonomic function was assessed in all participants in the morning using neuECG, which analyzed the average skin sympathetic nerve activity (aSKNA) and electrocardiogram simultaneously. All patients with OAB were administered antimuscarinics; urodynamic parameters were assessed before treatments; autonomic and bladder functions using validated questionnaires for OAB symptoms were evaluated before and after OAB treatment.

RESULTS

Patients with OAB had significantly higher baseline aSKNA (p = 0.003), lower standard deviation of the normal-to-normal beat intervals, lower root mean square of the successive differences, lower high-frequency, and higher low-frequency than did controls. Baseline aSKNA had the highest value in predicting OAB (AUROC = 0.783, p < 0.001). The aSKNA was negatively correlated with first desire and normal desire in urodynamic studies (both p = 0.025) and was significantly decreased after treatment at rest, stress, and recovery phases, as compared to those before treatment (p = 0.046, 0.017, and 0.017, respectively).

CONCLUSION

Sympathetic activity increased significantly in patients with OAB compared to that in healthy controls, and decreased significantly post-treatment. Higher aSKNA is associated with decreased bladder volume at which voiding is desired. SKNA may be a potential biomarker for diagnosing OAB.

Association of Overactive Bladder With Hypertension and Blood Pressure Control: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

BACKGROUND

The sudden urge to urinate, also known as overactive bladder (OAB), may reflect higher sympathetic activity and associate with higher blood pressure (BP).

METHODS

This cross-sectional analysis utilized data from sixth follow-up exam (2015-2016) of Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis to examine the association of OAB with systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) levels, hypertension, and BP control. Information on urinary symptoms was obtained with the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire (ICIQ). Sex-stratified regression models were constructed to examine differences in BP, hypertension prevalence, and BP control while adjusting for demographic factors, comorbidities, and medication use.

RESULTS

Among the 1,446 men and 1,628 women who completed the ICIQ (mean age 73.7 years [SD 8.4]), OAB was present in 31.6% of men and 38.9% of women. With no antihypertensive medication use, OAB was not associated with SBP or DBP in both men and women after adjusting for covariates. However, among the 894 men and 981 women on antihypertensive medication, OAB was associated with higher SBP among men (4.04 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02, 7.06) but not among women (-0.67 mm Hg; 95% CI -3.79, 2.46) while DBP did not differ by OAB presence in men or women. In addition, OAB was also associated with lower odds of BP control among men (odds ratio [OR] 0.69; 95% CI 0.49, 0.96) but not women (OR 0.96; 95% CI 0.71, 1.30).

CONCLUSIONS

Among men, OAB is associated with lower odds of BP control which suggests that OAB may impede hypertension management.

Beyond the bladder: poor sleep in women with overactive bladder syndrome

BACKGROUND

Nocturnal bladder symptoms and sleep disruption commonly coexist in middle-aged and older women. Although sleep disruption is often attributed to nocturnal bladder symptoms in women with overactive bladder syndrome, nonbladder factors also may influence sleep in this population. Many women with overactive bladder are eager to identify nonpharmacologic strategies for both bladder symptoms and sleep disruption, given the potential adverse effects of sedative and anticholinergic bladder medications in this population.

OBJECTIVES

To provide greater insight into the complex relationship between nighttime overactive bladder symptoms and sleep disruption, and to evaluate the effects of a guided slow-paced respiration intervention on sleep outcomes in women with overactive bladder.

STUDY DESIGN

We conducted an ancillary study within a randomized trial of slow-paced respiration in women with overactive bladder symptoms. Ambulatory community-dwelling women who reported ≥3 episodes/day of urgency-associated voiding or incontinence were randomized to use either a portable biofeedback device (RESPeRATE; Intercure, Ltd) to practice guided slow-paced respiration exercises daily for 12 weeks (N=79) or an identical-appearing device programmed to play nonrhythmic music without guiding breathing (N=82). At baseline and after 12 weeks, bladder symptoms were assessed by voiding diary, sleep duration, and disruption were assessed by sleep diary corroborated by wrist actigraphy, and poor sleep quality was determined by a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score >5.

RESULTS

Of the 161 women randomized, 31% reported at least twice-nightly nocturia, 26% nocturnal incontinence, and 70% poor sleep quality at baseline. Of the 123 reporting any nighttime awakenings, 89% averaged 1 or more nighttime awakenings, and 83% attributed at least half of awakenings to using the bathroom. Self-reported wake time after sleep onset increased with increasing frequency of nocturnal bladder symptoms (P=.01 for linear trend). However, even among women without nocturia, average sleep quality was poor (Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index global score mean of 7.3; 95% confidence interval, 6.0-8.6). Over 12 weeks, women assigned to slow-paced respiration (N=79) experienced modest improvements in mean nocturnal voiding frequency (0.4 fewer voids/night), sleep quality (1.1 point score decrease), and sleep disruption (1.5% decreased wake time after sleep onset). However, similar improvements were detected in the music control group (N=81), without significant between-group differences.

CONCLUSIONS

Many women with overactive bladder syndrome experience disrupted sleep, but not all nocturnal awakenings are attributable to bladder symptoms, and average sleep quality tends to be poor even in women without nocturia. Findings suggest that clinicians should not assume that poor sleep in women with overactive bladder syndrome is primarily caused by nocturnal bladder symptoms. Guided slow-paced respiration was associated with modest improvements in nocturia frequency and sleep quality in this trial, but the results do not support clinician recommendation to use this technique over other behavioral relaxation techniques for improving sleep.

A Randomized Controlled Trial of Device Guided, Slow-Paced Respiration in Women with Overactive Bladder Syndrome

PURPOSE

We evaluated the effects of device guided, slow-paced respiration on urgency associated urinary symptoms, perceived stress and anxiety, and autonomic function in women with overactive bladder syndrome.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We performed a randomized, parallel group trial of slow-paced respiration to improve perceived stress and autonomic dysfunction as potential contributors to overactive bladder. Ambulatory women who reported at least 3 voiding or incontinence episodes per day associated with moderate to severe urgency were randomized to use a portable biofeedback device to practice daily, slow, guided breathing exercises or a control device which appeared identical and was reprogrammed to play music without guiding breathing. During 12 weeks we evaluated changes in urinary symptoms by voiding diaries, perceived stress and anxiety by validated questionnaires, and autonomic function by heart rate variability and impedance cardiography.

RESULTS

In the 161 randomized participants, including 79 randomized to paced respiration and 82 randomized to the control group, the average ± SD baseline frequency of voiding or incontinence associated with moderate to severe urgency was 6.9 ± 3.4 episodes per day. Compared to controls the participants randomized to paced respiration demonstrated greater improvement in perceived stress (average Perceived Stress Scale score decrease 2.8 vs 1.1, p=0.03) but not in autonomic function markers. During 12 weeks the average frequency of voiding or incontinence associated with moderate to severe urgency, which was the study primary outcome, decreased by a mean of 0.9 ± 3.2 episodes per day but no significant between group difference was detected.

CONCLUSIONS

Among women with overactive bladder slow-paced respiration was associated with a modest improvement in perceived stress during 12 weeks. However, it was not superior to a music listening control for reducing urinary symptoms or changing autonomic function.

Avaliação da modulação autonômica cardíaca no processo de enchimento da bexiga em mulheres com incontinência urinária: perspectiva da fisioterapia

RESUMO Comparou-se o comportamento do sistema nervoso autônomo, por meio da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC), durante as fases de enchimento vesical de mulheres com e sem incontinência urinária (IU). Aplicou-se o International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form, para autodiagnóstico de IU. Para análise da VFC utilizaram-se registros de eletrocardiograma (ECG), sendo 6 registros durante o enchimento vesical. Para quantificar a VFC utilizaram-se os métodos: domínio do tempo (milissegundos); frequência (Hertz) e medidas não lineares. A estes parâmetros aplicou-se transformação logarítmica (Log). Na comparação de médias de dados normais utilizou-se teste t e para os dados não normais o teste de Mann-Whitney. Participaram 64 mulheres (64,8±6,73 anos), 33 com IU e 31 continentes. A variável logaritmo da razão dos componentes LF e HF (LogLH/HF) foi significativamente maior (p<0,05) no grupo continente em todos os momentos do enchimento vesical. A capacidade volumétrica vesical foi significativamente maior nas mulheres continentes (p=0,0015). A análise no domínio da frequência demonstrou redução da função simpática e aumento do parassimpático nas mulheres incontinentes. As mulheres continentes apresentaram melhor balanço autonômico durante todo processo de enchimento vesical, em comparação às incontinentes. A redução da função simpática, bem como o aumento da função parassimpática nas incontinentes, pôde ser reportada para uma diminuição da capacidade de relaxamento do detrusor e um aumento das contrações, ainda na fase de enchimento vesical, ambos associados à IU.

Is overactive bladder a nervous or bladder disorder? Autonomic imaging in patients with overactive bladder via dynamic pupillometry

PURPOSE

To evaluate the changes in dynamic pupillometry in patients with idiopathic overactive bladder (OAB).

METHODS

The study included 40 female patients with idiopathic OAB and 40 healthy female volunteers as a control group. Demographic and clinical data were recorded. Dynamic pupillometric parameters were measured with a commercially available unit (MonPack One, Metrovision, France) at baseline and on the 30th day of treatment with an antimuscarinic treatment (drug-agent) (solifenacin 5 mg daily). Initial, minimum, maximum and mean pupil diameters, the latency and duration of contraction and dilatation of the pupil, the amplitude of contraction and dilatation velocity were automatically measured and compared between the groups.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences between two groups with respect to age and body mass index (p = 0.288, 0.755, respectively). The measurements of initial, minimum and mean pupil diameters were significantly lower in patients with OAB compared to healthy controls (p = 0.007, 0.002, 0.001, respectively). OAB patients had significantly longer latency of pupil dilatation, latency of pupil contraction and shorter duration of pupil contraction than control group (p = 0.028, 0.029, 0.021, respectively). After the antimuscarinic treatment, latency of pupil contraction, latency of pupil dilatation and duration of pupil contraction shortened significantly (all p < 0.001). Pupil dilatation velocity increased significantly during the treatment (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The dynamic pupillometric findings in this study imply impaired autonomic dysfunction, mostly the increased parasympathetic action, in OAB patients and the modulatory effects of antimuscarinic treatment.

Evaluation of autonomic nervous system function in children with overactive bladder syndrome

PURPOSE

We aimed to evaluate the autonomic nervous system activity in children with overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome.

METHODS

Included in the study were 40 children with overactive bladder and 28 healthy controls. Autonomic tests were performed on all participants, including heart rate interval variation (RRIV), heart rate response to valsalva maneuver, and sympathetic skin response (SSR).

RESULTS

Mean valsalva rates in the overactive bladder and control groups were 1.53 ± 0.29 and 1.30 ± 0.18, respectively, a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). Also significantly different were deep breathing RRIV values of the study and control groups: 56.65 ± 14.66 and 47.92 ± 10.15, respectively (P = 0.008). No statistical differences were found in SSR when OAB patients were compared with controls (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrated a parasympathetic hyperactivity in children with OAB, results suggesting a dysfunction in their autonomic nervous systems. Neurourol. Urodynam. 36:673-676, 2017. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Practical points in the medical treatment of overactive bladder and nocturia in the elderly

The prevalence of overactive bladder (OAB) increases with age. Degeneration of the central nervous system in the elderly has been proposed as one of the pathogenic factors of OAB. Antimuscarinic therapy is effective in the treatment of OAB; however, intolerable systemic adverse events and cognitive dysfunction during treatment with nonselective antimuscarinic agents is of growing concern in elderly patients. The newly developed beta-3 adrenoceptor agonist mirabegron does not adversely affect flow rate and detrusor pressure, and its therapeutic efficacy and tolerability are similar in patients aged > 65 years and > 75 years, suggesting it might be the therapeutic choice in older patients with OAB. Nocturia can cause sleep deprivation at night and increase daytime sleepiness and loss of energy in the elderly. Desmopressin add-on therapy is effective in improving nocturia and storage symptoms. However, elderly patients with a baseline serum sodium level below the normal range are at high risk of developing significant hyponatremia.

Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Are Associated with Increased Risk of Dementia among the Elderly: A Nationwide Study

Studies show a strong association between dementia and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The aim of this study was to investigate whether LUTS are a risk factor for cognitive impairment. We enrolled 50-year-old and older subjects with LUTS (LUTS^[+]) (n = 6801) and controls without LUTS (LUTS^[−]) (n = 20,403) from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. LUTS, dementia, and other confounding factors are defined by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification Codes. Participants were recruited from 2000 to 2004 and then followed up until death or the end of 2011. The outcome was the onset of dementia, which was assessed using Poisson regression analysis, Cox hazards models, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. The incidence of dementia was significantly higher in the LUTS^[+] group than in the LUTS^[−] group (124.76 versus 77.59/1000 person-years). The increased risk of dementia related to LUTS remained significant after adjustment for potential confounders (adjusted hazard ratio (AHR): 1.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.47–1.76, P < 0.0001) and higher than that related to cerebrovascular disease (AHR: 1.43, 95% CI 1.26–1.61, P < 0.0001). The outcome suggests the need for early screening and appropriate intervention to help prevent cognitive impairment of patients with LUTS.

The correlation between the treatment efficacy and the sympathetic activity in men with lower urinary tract symptoms

Purpose

In this study, we examined the difference in the treatment efficacy depending on the sympathetic activity in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).

Methods

In the current single-center, retrospective study, we evaluated a total of 66 male patients aged 40-70 years of age, presenting with LUTS, whose International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) exceeded 8 points. They had a past 3-month history of taking alfuzosin XL, and their heart rate variability (HRV) was measured before and after the treatment. In addition, we also recruited 39 healthy volunteers who visited a health promotion center for a regular medical check-up. They were aged between 40 and 70 years and had an IPSS of <8 points. We divided the patients with LUTS into two groups: the groups A and B, based on a low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio of 1.7, which was the mean value of the LF/HF ratio in the healthy volunteers. After a 3-month treatment with alfuzosin XL, we compared treatment outcomes, based on the IPSS and peak urine flow rate, between the two groups.

Results

A 3-month treatment with alfuzosin XL, comprising the measurement of the HRV, was performed for the 23 patients of the group A (23/38) and 17 of the group B (17/28). After a 3-month treatment with alfuzosin XL, total IPSS and IPSS questionnaire 2 and 5 were significantly lower in the group A as compared with the group B. But this was not seen in the group B. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in other parameters, such as maximal flow rate and IPSS storage subscore, between the two groups.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that the treatment efficacy was lower in patients with sympathetic hyperactivity as compared with those with sympathetic hypoactivity. Thus, our results will provide a basis for further studies to clarify causes of LUTS in a clinical setting.

Heart rate variability in overactive bladder experimental model

INTRODUCTION

TWO MAIN PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS OF OVERACTIVE BLADDER (OAB) ARE POSTULATED: the neurogenic and myogenic theories. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is also involved in OAB pathophysiology. The purpose of our study was to estimate ANS activity by heart rate variability (HRV) assessment in two OAB experimental models evoked by cyclophosphamide administration: acute (AOAB) and chronic (COAB) overactive ones.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In the AOAB model, an i.p. dose of cyclophosphamide was administered (200 mg/kg body weight) while the COAB model received 4 times the i.p. administration of cyclophosphamide (75 mg/kg body weight). In each subject, after urethane anaesthesia (1.2 g/kg body weight), 20-minute ECG recordings (PowerLab) were performed with subsequent HRV analysis.

RESULTS

Most of the differences in time domain analysis parameters were insignificant, except those concerning SDNN and rMSSD (p < 0.05). In frequency analysis, a power decrease of all standard spectral components was revealed in both OAB groups. In AOAB, TP (1.43 ±1.21 vs. 7.92 ±6.22 in control; p < 0.05) and VLF (0.95 ±1.08 vs. 6.97 ±5.99 in control; p < 0.05) showed significant power decrease, whereas the COAB group was mostly characterized by LF (0.09 ±0.15 vs. 0.34 ±0.33 in control; p < 0.05) and HF (0.25 ±0.29 vs. 0.60 ±0.41 in control; p < 0.05) decrease.

CONCLUSIONS

The ANS disturbances, found as standard spectral parameter abnormalities, were demonstrated in both AOAB and COAB. When this finding is analysed, together with the lack of statistically significant differences in normalized nLF and nHF powers, the VLF changes seem to play an essential role, probably reflecting the progression in bladder inflammatory changes.

[Comparison between autonomic nervous system cardiovascular tests (ANSCVT) and lacrymal and or salivary secretion tests (LSST) in overactive bladder syndrome and voiding dysfunction]

PURPOSE

To compare autonomic nervous system cardiovascular tests (ANSCVT) and lacrymal and or salivary secretion tests (LSST).

METHOD

One hundred and twenty-four patients (57 females, 67 males, mean age 45) with lower urinary tract symptoms (overactive bladder syndrome or voiding dysfunction) without neurogenic or urological causes, were included. Urodynamic was performed in all the patients with LSST (saliva flowmetry-sialometry [SFS], candy weight-loss test [CWT], Schirmer test [SchT]) and ANSCVT (ratio 30:15, orthostatic hypotension analysis, deep breath test [DBT], Valsalva maneuver [VM], cold pressor test [CPT] and hand grip test [HGT]).

RESULTS

In eight cases, ANSCVT were altered (four in OAB syndrome, four in voiding dysfunction). No correlation was found between positive ANSCVT and LSST (P=0.72 for CWT, P=1 for SFS, P=0.1 for SchT). In contrary, there is a significant correlation between SchT and CWT (P=0.049), but not between SchT and SFS (P=0.69) or SFS vs CWT (P=0.06).

CONCLUSION

In this series LSST were not sufficient to track down autonomic nervous system alterations and ANSCVT always necessary. Autonomic dysfunctions were infrequent in OAB syndrome and "idiopathic" voiding dysfunctions (6.5%).

Alterations of heart rate variability in women with overactive bladder syndrome

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS

Our objective was to compare autonomic nervous system function between women with an overactive bladder (OAB) and control participants during regulated bladder filling.

METHODS

Twenty-four women, nine with OAB and 15 without (control), were instructed to drink 1.5 l of water at a rate of 250 ml every 5 min during continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. Participants were asked to indicate first sensations of filling (FSF), first desire to void (FDV), strong desire to void (SDV), and maximal bladder capacity (MC). ECG signals were used to assess heart rate variability, which were analyzed in time and frequency domains using the fast Fourier transform. The low-frequency (LF)and high-frequency (HF) spectral bands were used to asses sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways, respectively.

RESULTS

During the bladder-filling phase, women with OAB had significantly lower LF values (at the MC phase 5.4 ± 1.4 ms(2)/Hz vs. 6.4 ± 0.6 ms(2)/Hz in the control group, p = 0.02). In the control group, LF increased continuously, whereas in the OAB group, LF increased until the sensation of SDV and then abruptly decreased to baseline values. MC was lower in women with OAB (372 ± 153 ml vs. 592 ± 298 ml, p < 0.05, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Reduced sympathetic tone in women with OAB may explain their attainment of lower volumes of MC and their sensation of urgency. The rapid decrease in sympathetic neural activity that accompanies the sensation of an SDV may be related to the pathophysiology of the urgency symptom in these women.

High classification of chronic heart failure increases risk of overactive bladder syndrome and lower urinary tract symptoms

OBJECTIVE

To assess the urologic symptoms among patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and to explore whether a higher classification of CHF increases the risk associated with overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) and lower urinary tract symptoms.

METHODS

A total of 214 ambulatory patients with CHF (129 men and 85 women) and 378 age-matched subjects (222 men and 156 women) were enrolled in the present study. The urologic symptoms were evaluated using the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS) and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) from January to June 2010.

RESULTS

Compared with the controls, the patients with CHF had a significantly greater mean OABSS (4.6±3.6 vs 3.4±3.1, P<.001), total IPSS (8.3±6.9 vs 6.9±7.6, P=.021), and storage IPSS (4.8±3.5 vs 3.7±3.3, P<.001). Of the patients with CHF, 34.1% had moderate/severe OAB symptoms (OABSS≥6), and 43.5% had moderate/severe lower urinary tract symptoms (IPSS≥8). Compared with patients who had New York Heart Association (NYHA) class I CHF, the patients with NYHA class III CHF had a significantly greater OABSS and total, storage, and voiding IPSSs. Patients with NYHA class II CHF did not. A greater body mass index and stroke were significantly associated with the OABSS and storage IPSS, and pulmonary disease was significantly associated with the voiding IPSS.

CONCLUSION

The patients with CHF had more storage urinary symptoms suggestive of OAB than did the age-matched controls. Among the patients with CHF, greater NYHA class heart function was significantly associated with OAB and lower urinary tract symptoms.

Dietary macronutrient intake and lower urinary tract symptoms in women

PURPOSE

To examine associations between macronutrient and total energy intakes with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in women.

METHODS

Cross-sectional analysis of 2060 women aged 30-79 years in the population-based Boston Area Community Health Survey (2002-2005). Data were collected by validated food frequency questionnaire and in-person interviews. Outcomes for multivariate logistic regression were moderate-to-severe total LUTS, storage, voiding, and postmicturition symptoms.

RESULTS

Greater total energy intake was positively associated with LUTS, specifically among women with lower waist circumferences (<76 cm, p = .005, p(interaction) = .01). Increased saturated fat intake was associated with postmicturition symptoms (Quintile 5 vs. 1, odds ratio 3.94, 95% confidence interval 1.57-9.89, p(trend) = .04). High protein intake was positively associated with storage symptoms (p(trend) = .03), particularly nocturia. No consistent associations were observed for carbohydrate, monounsaturated, or polyunsaturated fat intakes.

CONCLUSIONS

Among women with low waist circumferences, high total daily calorie intake was associated with moderate-to-severe LUTS. Although greater saturated fat intake was linked to postmicturition symptoms, the possibility that postmicturition symptoms in women represent more extensive or severe conditions should be explored in future research. These novel results indicate that dietary contributors to LUTS in women are distinct from those in men and may depend on symptom subtype and body size.

A noninvasive evaluation analysis of amniotic fluid embolism and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy

OBJECTIVE

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a complication of pregnancy with a high mortality rate. The diagnosis of AFE is currently based on clinical findings, acute respiratory distress, cardiovascular collapse during labor and delivery, and immediate massive postpartum hemorrhaging. The serum biological markers are unreliable, and their detection requires a long time intervals for result. An early diagnosis is very important and prompts the clinical management of the condition.

STUDY DESIGN AND RESULTS

We present here a noninvasive method (time frequency, entropy) to analyze heart rate variability (HRV). 3D-Spectrogram and entropy were derived from the RR interval of two pregnant subjects with AFE and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) survived after delivering normal babies admitted to the Taiwan Seventh-day Adventists Hospital, and the entropy values were compared with those of 105 healthy pregnant subjects in the same hospital.

CONCLUSIONS

We show that these methods can be successfully applied to the diagnosis of AFE and predict the prognosis of DIC. We also show that CT scans can be applied to the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, eliminating the need to pathology.
