Abstract
AbstractIn this work, IN738 superalloy used previously in gas turbines was recycled and used as a working electrode for the electrooxidation of different fuels, namely ethylene glycol, ethanol, and urea. The electrocatalytic efficiency of the electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance. Several kinetics parameters like diffusion coefficient, Tafel slope, rate constant, and activation energy were calculated. The modified electrode was characterized as received using XRD, SEM, and EDAX to elucidate the crystal structure and surface morphology before and after electrochemical oxidation. The anodic current densities of electrochemical oxidation of ethanol, ethylene glycol, and urea were 29, 17, and 12 mA.cm−2, respectively, in an alkaline solution at a potential of 0.6 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The kinetic parameters like diffusion coefficients for ethanol, ethylene glycol, and urea were found to be 1.5 $$\times$$
×
10–6, 1.038 $$\times$$
×
10–6, and 0.64 $$\times$$
×
10–6 cm2 s−1, respectively. The charge transfer resistances were estimated for electrooxidation of different fuels by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

Abstract
The simultaneous detection of multiple heavy metal ions in solution is an important yet highly challenging problem. In this work, a metal-free g-C3N4/carbon black (CB) composite electrode was synthesized by a one-step thermal polycondensation method and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ultraviolet visible light spectroscopy. In addition, the photoelectrochemical response of the g-C3N4/CB nanocomposite to Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+ both separately and as a mixture of the three analytes was investigated by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. The g-C3N4/CB electrode demonstrated an excellent sensing performance to Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+ in the range of 0-700 nM, 0-300 nM and 0-500 nM, respectively, with limits of detection (LOD) of Cd2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+ of 2.1, 0.26 and 0.22 nM, respectively. The LOD of the combined solution of the three analytes was slightly higher at 3.3 nM. Additionally, the metal-free g-C3N4/CB photoelectrochemical sensor exhibited excellent electrochemical stability and electrode reproducibility. Finally, g-C3N4/CB sensor also showed satisfactory results in the detection of trace analyte ions in real environmental systems. This work provides a novel and promising approach in the simultaneous detection of multiple heavy metal ions in solution for practical applications.

Abstract
A highly electroactive Ni-based catalyst for urea oxidation is prepared by a sol-gel method with bubbling of gel mixture. It is observed that the conditions for the gel formation strongly affect the morphology and electrochemical properties of the catalyst materials. As synthesized Ni-catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The Ni-based catalyst prepared at optimum conditions in the scope of this study exhibits the urea oxidation activity of 570 mA mg-1 (at 0.54 V). In a single urea/hydrogen peroxide fuel cell test, the Ni-catalyst provides maximum power densities of 19.6 and 36.4 mW cm-2 at 30 and 70 °C, respectively. Additionally, the cell catalyst shows a stable voltage for 3 days. Thus, this work suggests that a novel Ni-based catalyst derived from a facile method can be used for urea oxidation and as an efficient anode material for urea fuel cells.

Abstract
In the present work, Cu-doped nickel ferrite (CuxNi(1-x)Fe2O4) nanoparticles (CuNFNPs) were chemically fabricated by adding citric acid as a capping agent followed by combustion and calcination for acetaldehyde oxidation reaction (AOR) in KOH electrolytes. The as-prepared CuNFNPs were studied in terms of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area analyses. The morphology of CuNFNPs has sponges-structure containing irregular pores. Additionally, XRD analysis indicated that the prepared CuNFNPs have a cubic-crystals ferrite without the existence of impurities and the crystal size around 20.2 nm. The electrooxidation of acetaldehyde by the presented CuNFNPs was investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in -OH media. Furthermore, the effects of -OH and acetaldehyde on the electrocatalytic performance were studied with and without Cu-doping in addition to EIS and CA studies which confirm the high-performance of CuNFNPs as an electrocatalyst for AOR.

Abstract
Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is the underlying reaction that determines the performance of modern urea-based energy conversion technologies. These technologies include electrocatalytic and photoelectrochemical urea splitting for hydrogen production and direct urea fuel cells as power engines. They have demonstrated great potentials as alternatives to current water splitting and hydrogen fuel cell systems with more favorable operating conditions and cost effectiveness. At the moment, UOR performance is mainly limited by the 6-electron transfer process. In this case, various material design and synthesis strategies have recently been reported to produce highly efficient UOR catalysts. The performance of these advanced catalysts is optimized by the modification of their structural and chemical properties, including porosity development, heterostructure construction, defect engineering, surface functionalization, and electronic structure modulation. Considering the rich progress in this field, the recent advances in the design and synthesis of UOR catalysts for urea electrolysis, photoelectrochemical urea splitting, and direct urea fuel cells are reviewed here. Particular attention is paid to those design concepts, which specifically target the characteristics of urea molecules. Moreover, challenges and prospects for the future development of urea-based energy conversion technologies and corresponding catalysts are also discussed.
