Factors affecting business school students’ performance during the COVID-19 pandemic: A moderated and mediated model

Using machine learning to predict factors affecting academic performance: the case of college students on academic probation

This study aims to employ the supervised machine learning algorithms to examine factors that negatively impacted academic performance among college students on probation (underperforming students). We used the Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) methodology on a sample of N = 6514 college students spanning 11 years (from 2009 to 2019) provided by a major public university in Oman. We used the Information Gain (InfoGain) algorithm to select the most effective features and ensemble methods to compare the accuracy with more robust algorithms, including Logit Boost, Vote, and Bagging. The algorithms were evaluated based on the performance evaluation metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F-measure, and ROC curve, and then validated using 10-folds cross-validation. The study revealed that the main identified factors affecting student academic achievement include study duration in the university and previous performance in secondary school. Based on the experimental results, these features were consistently ranked as the top factors that negatively impacted academic performance. The study also indicated that gender, estimated graduation year, cohort, and academic specialization significantly contributed to whether a student was under probation. Domain experts and other students were involved in verifying some of the results. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.

Undergraduate business students' learning experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic: Insights for remediation of future disruption

Despite the rapid proliferation of literature exploring student learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, little has been published about its impacts on business undergraduates during the pivots to remote teaching and learning. There is a particular lack of insight and guidance for business schools to optimise program delivery post-COVID or for similar future disruptions. This case study explored the learning experiences of undergraduate business students during the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing insights from an Australian university located in the state of Victoria, one of the ‘most locked down places in the world’. Thematic analysis identified the following emergent themes: (1) Mixed student experiences and perceptions of online learning upon transitioning into lockdown/emergency remote teaching/learning; (2) Limited connections and interactions amongst student-student(s) and student-lecturer/tutor; (3) Perceived ineffective online teaching delivery; (4) Positive aspects of emergency remote learning; (5) Adequacy of support for learning during lockdowns; (6) Preferences for post-COVID-19 learning. The outcomes provide proactive signposts for university educators wishing to improve student engagement and learning, and delivery of business undergraduate programs for a post-COVID world as well as future pandemic and similar disruption settings.

Determinants of CSR and green purchase intention: Mediating role of customer green psychology during COVID-19 pandemic

COVID-19 is a viral disease also comprehended as a coronavirus pandemic that has compelled the world to revisit business strategies to encounter COVID-19 challenges. Over the last decade, ample research has been accomplished on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and circular economy. Nevertheless, a key research gap requires to be filled that how CSR can perform a foremost role in engaging stakeholders like consumers during the COVID-19 era. Drawing from the stakeholder theory, this research endeavors to probe CSR's impact on green purchase intention (GPI) with mediating role of green psychology (GP). Data for the study were gathered from mainland China employing convenience sampling and examined by utilizing SEM (Structural Equation Model). First, the study indicated a direct relationship between CSR and GPI as well as between CSR and GP within three streams, i.e., green trust (GT), green satisfaction (GS), and green perceived value (GPV). It is found that GT, GS, and GPV positively influence GPI whereas the positive mediating relationships of each GP factor were autonomously observed between CSR and GPI, respectively. This research can improve the understanding of the enterprises about consumers and how incorporating green activities may enhance consumers' GPI and GP during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study addresses numerous interesting and insightful implications for strategic management together with certain possibilities for prospective researchers.

How does organizational culture affect employees' mental health during COVID-19? The mediating role of transparent communication

BACKGROUND

Over the years, the workplace landscape has significantly evolved, demanding an optimal psychological approach to establish an environment that values individual work and health. A firm's culture inspires it to adopt business practices that enable its employees to live healthier lives.

OBJECTIVE

The study aims to measure the mediating relationship of transparent communication between organizational culture and mental health in the Pakistani healthcare industry. The study also explores the relationship between organizational culture and mental health.

METHODS

The study collected primary data via purposive sampling from the healthcare employees of Pakistan between March and May 2022. The study's sample size consists of 509 respondents from the healthcare industry sector, and the research used Smart PLS software to measure the relationship through bootstrapping and algorithms.

RESULTS

Organizational culture has a positive effect on the employee's mental health. The study has found significant positive mediation of transparent communication and moderation of organizational trust between organizational culture and mental health.

CONCLUSION

The COVID-19 pandemic has deteriorated workers' mental health, causing considerable changes in the healthcare sector. Positive mental health at work is a critical factor that improves the working environment. As such, this study highlights the importance of mental health in the workplace setting. It extends the literature in the context of the healthcare industry, thus supporting employees' well-being. The findings suggest a significant relationship between an organization's culture and mental health. This study suggests the theoretical and practical implications for policymakers' and researchers' perspectives concerning employees and organizational culture.

Multi-Layer Perception model with Elastic Grey Wolf Optimization to predict student achievement

This study proposes a Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) variant named Elastic Grey Wolf Optimization algorithm (EGWO) with shrinking, resilient surrounding, and weighted candidate mechanisms. Then, the proposed EGWO is used to optimize the weights and biases of Multi-Layer Perception (MLP), and the EGWO-MLP model for predicting student achievement is thus obtained. The training and verification of the EGWO-MLP prediction model are conducted based on the thirty attributes from the University of California (UCI) Machine Learning Repository dataset's student performance dataset, including family features and personal characteristics. For the Mathematics (Mat.) subject achievement prediction, the EGWO-MLP model outperforms one model's prediction accuracy, and the standard deviation possesses the stable ability to predict student achievement. And for the Portuguese (Por.) subject, the EGWO-MLP outperforms three models' Mathematics (Mat.) subject achievement prediction through the training process and takes first place through the testing process. The results show that the EGWO-MLP model has made fewer test errors, indicating that EGWO can effectively feedback weights and biases due to the strong exploration and local stagnation avoidance. And the EGWO-MLP model is feasible for predicting student achievement. The study can provide reference for improving school teaching programs and enhancing teachers' teaching quality and students' learning effect.

Impact of fear of COVID-19 on students' performance, moderating role of mindfulness: HSK students' perception-based view

COVID-19 created difficulties and problems in almost everyone's daily life routine. Educational institutions too had to reschedule their academic activities. This shift caused attitudinal and behavioral changes in students' learning patterns. Using stress theory, the present study tries to determine the association of fear of COVID-19 with students' performance. In addition, the present study also attempts to check the impact of fear of COVID-19 on anxiety. Further, this study tries to find the association of anxiety with students' performance. This study also attempts to determine the mediating role of anxiety and the moderating role of mindfulness. For empirical investigation, the current study collected data from 320 HSK students from different colleges and universities in China. The present study applied partial least square structural equation modeling for the empirical investigation of hypotheses by using Smart-PLS software. The present study's findings confirmed that fear of COVID-19 negatively affects students' performance, and it positively correlates with anxiety. The study's outcomes revealed that anxiety negatively affects students' performance. The outcomes also confirmed that anxiety negatively mediates the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and students' performance. The present study's findings acknowledged that mindfulness does not moderate the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and student performance and has a positive moderation between anxiety and student performance. The present study offers important practical, theoretical, and managerial implications.

Study on the integrated teaching of English education, mental health and students' wellbeing

Teachers' attitudes, behavior, and practices play an integral role in enhancing the students' learning activities. Teachers' strategies ensure the individuals' professional development by creating a healthy learning environment. The study's primary objective is to analyze students' attitudes toward learning English as a foreign language. The data was collected from the 359 colleges and universities students by adopting a convenient sampling technique. The study shows English self-concept and teacher behavior student orientation significantly positively impact attitudes toward learning English as a foreign language. Motivation for English and English Intentions mediate the relationship between English Self-concept, teacher behavior-student orientation, and Attitude toward learning English as a Foreign Language. The study motivates future studies to focus on the EFL, individuals' learning motivation and intentions in other domains across diverse contexts.
