Abstract
Background Falls amongst the elderly represent a global public health challenge because of their potential to cause illness, death, and reduce the autonomy of this group. They also impact the emotional, family, social and economic well-being of those involved. Various strategies to prevent falls have been reported in the literature, focusing mainly on addressing individual risk factors, and on the continuous assessment of the risk of falls in older people. Objective This study evaluated user satisfaction and acceptability of a comprehensive model, implemented in the community, to prevent falls amongst independent older adults aged 65 years and above. It sought to capture both the perceptions of the individuals who received the intervention and of the interventionists who implemented it. The study protocol was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov in November 2020 (ID: NCT04313062). Design Qualitative, exploratory study using a case study design. The evaluation of the intervention followed the recommendations proposed by the Medical Research Council for complex interventions. Methods and participants: In the period between April 2021 to April 2022, 11 semi-structured interviews were conducted with independent older adults between 65 and 80 years of age who participated in the implementation of the comprehensive model in Santiago, Chile. Data were also collected with eight interventionists through: three semi-structured interviews at the beginning of the intervention; and two focus groups with seven interventionists at the end of the implementation of the model. The team members undertook a content analysis of the data collected. Results Three themes emerged to account for the satisfaction and acceptability of the intervention with the model on the part of the participants and interventionists: (1) Previous experience of older persons and interventionists; (2) The older person-interventionist encounter and its context; and (3) Identification of facilitators, strengths and challenges for the implementation of the model. The results show a positive assessment of the model, highlighting the value of the social contact derived from the intervention by both participants and interventionists. Although the model involved an individual intervention, the participants' accounts indicate that it reached out to others, including family members and other elderly acquaintances. Moreover, the interventionists helped identify challenges in implementation and made recommendations to strengthen the model. Conclusion The evaluation of satisfaction and feasibility of implementing the model showed positive results that will nurture the next phase of development of this model, which involves scaling up the intervention.

Abstract
AIM This article presents the findings of a qualitative study focusing on the experiences of people aged over 70 years in the interpersonal nurse-patient care relationship in hospital settings during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim was to analyse different aspects of this relationship, including nurses' behaviour and caring attitudes, the person-centred model of care, patients' involvement in their own care and communication in the hospital context. DESIGN An exploratory qualitative study was conducted on the basis of an interpretative framework. METHODS Six focus groups were conducted. A total of 34 participants were purposively recruited from three nursing homes in Spain, Italy and Portugal. Specific inclusion criteria were used to select participants. RESULTS Five main categories were identified. Analysis revealed the importance of empathy and sensitivity in caring relationships, as well as the need for personalized and patient-centred care. The importance of effective communication and recognition of ageist behaviour by professionals was highlighted. In addition, independent of the pandemic, situational factors in the hospital environment were identified that influence the interpersonal care relationship. CONCLUSIONS The study highlights the need to promote a person-centred model of care that takes into account the specific preferences and needs of older people. This is achieved by identifying elements of the interpersonal nurse-patient relationship. In addition to highlighting the disparity of opinion regarding an active or passive role in self-care and decision making, the importance of addressing ageism and improving communication is emphasized. WHAT PROBLEM DID THE STUDY ADDRESS?: The importance of the patient-nurse relationship in hospital care has been highlighted in previous studies. Critical elements of the patient care experience have been identified as empathy and effective communication. Ageism in healthcare has been recognized as a potential barrier to patient-centred care. WHAT WERE THE KEY FINDINGS?: The main findings highlight the importance of empathy and personalized care, emphasize the importance of effective communication and address ageist behaviours in the nurse-patient relationship. WHERE AND WHO WILL THE RESEARCH IMPACT?: By highlighting the need for person-centred care and improved communication strategies, particularly in the context of caring for older patients during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, this research will have an impact on healthcare professionals, policy makers and carers. REPORTING METHOD The COREQ guideline was used. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This study adopted a collaborative approach to ensure that patient perspectives were integrated into the research process. We organized regular focus groups. Patients were actively involved in shaping the research questions, refining the study design and interpreting the emerging findings. Their valuable input helped us to understand the nuances of their experience and to prioritize the aspects that were critical to their well-being. In addition, their insights guided the development of practical recommendations aimed at improving the interpersonal care relationship between nurses and patients in hospital settings, ensuring that their voices were heard and reflected in the proposed interventions. This patient-centred approach fostered a sense of empowerment among the participants. It reinforced the notion that their experiences and opinions are integral to shaping healthcare practice.

Abstract
Introduction Nurses often experience stress and feel under time pressure when working with older people, increasing their job dissatisfaction. Especially people 80 years of age and older often require more complex and a greater measure of care, as the risk of care dependency is higher in this age group. This study was conducted to collect nurses' experiences and opinions regarding the care of people 80 years of age and older, as well as to learn more about how nurses perceive this care. Method We analysed narratives collected in an Austrian nationwide, cross-sectional online study to investigate nurses' attitudes towards people 80 years of age and older and their perceptions regarding their care (N = 1197). Data were collected from May-October 2021 by using a convenience sampling method. In total, 149 participants filled in the free text field; these texts were analysed using a qualitative content analysis method. Results Three main themes emerged from the analysis of the nurses' narratives: (1) 'opinions on people in need of care', (2) 'reputation of nursing profession', and (3) 'criticism of current nursing practice'. Most narratives were assigned to the subthemes 'positive opinions on nursing', 'ideal image of nursing', and 'shortage of staff'. Conclusion Nurses considered their work with people aged 80 years and older to be meaningful and important, but they criticised working conditions which need to be improved. This could be achieved by offering further education and increasing nursing staff. Further research is needed to investigate nurses' needs and wishes regarding the care of people aged 80 years and older.

Abstract
Little is known about which communication strategies nurses carried out and whether the nurse-patient relationship has been altered due to the mandated use of personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study describes how nurse-patient communication and relationships took place from the point of view of nurses engaged in caring for patients with COVID-19. A qualitative descriptive study design following COREQ guidelines was conducted. Semi-structured telephone interviews with nurses working in the COVID ward of an Italian university hospital were performed between September 2020 and June 2021. Ten nurses were recruited using convenience sampling. One overarching theme, three main themes, and nine sub-themes were identified. The overarching theme 'The in-out relationship: 'in here and out there' and 'inside me and out of me' included the main themes 'A closed system different from normal', 'Uncovering meaningful human gestures', and 'A deep experience to live''. The relational nature of nursing-where 'me and you' and the context are the main elements-leads nurses to find new ways of interacting and communicating with patients, even in a new situation that has never been experienced. Enhancing human gestures, thinking about new contexts of care, and educating new generations to maintain human-to-human interaction, regardless of the context of care, are the directives to be explored for creating the future of nursing care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Binary or categorical thinking is a way of thinking in which the brain unconsciously sorts the masses of information it receives into categories. This helps us to quickly process information and keeps us safe through pattern recognition of possible threats. However, it can also be influenced by unconscious and conscious biases that inform our judgements of other people and situations. OBJECTIVES To examine nursing practice with older people through the lens of unconscious bias. METHODS In this critical analysis, using Kahneman's fast and slow thinking, we argue that nurses working with hospitalised older people often rely on thinking quickly in hectic work environments, which can contribute to unconscious and conscious bias, use of binary language to describe older persons and nursing tasks, and ultimately rationing of care. RESULTS Binary language describes older persons and their care simplistically as nursing tasks. A person is either heavy or light, continent or incontinent, confused or orientated. Although these descriptions are informed in part by nurses' experiences, they also reflect conscious and unconscious biases that nurses hold towards older patients or nursing tasks. We draw on explanations of fast (intuitive) and slow (analytical) to explain how nurses gravitate to thinking fast as a survival mechanism in environments where they are not supported or encouraged to think slow. CONCLUSIONS Nurses survival efforts in getting through the shift using fast thinking, which can be influenced by unconscious and conscious biases, can lead to use of shortcuts and the rationing of care. We believe that it is of paramount importance that nurses be encouraged and supported to think slowly and analytically in their clinical practice. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Implications Nurses can engage in journaling and reflecting on their practice with older people to examine possible unconscious bias. Managers can support reflective thinking by supporting nurses through staffing models and encouraging conversations about person-centered care in unit practices.

Abstract
AIM To gain insight into which elements of the interpersonal care relationship (IPCR) are perceived as occurring (less) frequently and as (not) disturbing from the perspective of hospitalized older patients. DESIGN A cross-sectional study in three Belgian hospitals. METHODS A convenience sample of patients aged 75 years or older admitted to a non-geriatric ward were recruited between May 2017 and April 2019. The Interpersonal Geriatric care relationship (InteGer) tool was used to identify elements of the IPCR and was completed by the researchers through structured patient interviews. RESULTS The mean total scale score for frequency was 3.74 (SD 1.51) [range 0-12]. On subscale level, the highest mean score was in the accessibility and the lowest mean score in the humanization subscale. Statistically significant differences between the hypothesized and experienced disturbance were observed in 18 of the 30 items. Ten items score in the category 'no action needed' (not occurring, not disturbing), nine items in the category 'remain attentive for patient experiences' (occurring, not disturbing), 10 items in the category 'further analyses or monitoring needed' (not occurring, disturbing) and one item in the category 'urgent action needed' (occurring and disturbing). CONCLUSION Participants report mostly positive experiences related to the four subscales of the InteGer, that is, humanization, attentiveness, interest and accessibility. Insights from this study provide important opportunities in the context of care optimization for each category with the main focus on items with high experienced disturbance. IMPACT The InteGer can be used for monitoring IPCR and formulating action points at ward and hospital level to further improve the IPCR and quality of care.

Abstract
Objective: To determine a broad definition of the term interpersonal skills in nursing.
Materials and methods: This theoretical study follows Walker and Avant’s method of concept analysis to examine the defining attributes of the concept. A literature search on interpersonal aspects of nursing was conducted in databases, e-books, and institutional repositories to recognize the uses, attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of the concept. Experts on professional and relationship skills were consulted between 2009 and 2019.
Results: This information was analyzed, concluding that interpersonal skills in nursing are defined as the abilities of professional nurses to express their knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and values in relationships with colleages, patients, and their relatives and achieve a humane and person- centered practice.
Conclusion: The concept of interpersonal skills in nursing is limited, given a lack of clarity in practice and research on the indistinct use of terms related to interpersonal skills and interpersonal knowledge. This analysis advances nursing theory towards practice and research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses often lack the knowledge and expertise to work with older people with cognitive impairment, which includes dementia, delirium and depression. This is due in part to deficits in their basic nursing education related to older people and managing the care needs of people with cognitive impairment. We developed an e-learning activity to facilitate student nurses' knowledge of cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVES To test if the e-learning activity could improve student nurses' knowledge of cognitive impairment and whether they would find the style of learning beneficial. DESIGN A quasi-experimental pre-post-test design was used to test if the cognitive impairment e-learning activity could improve student nurses' knowledge about assessing and managing the needs of older people who are experiencing cognitive impairment. A 12-item true/false quiz was completed by participants. SETTINGS One large Western Canadian university. PARTICIPANTS Second year nursing students in the four-year baccalaureate degree program, second year nursing students in the bilingual four-year baccalaureate degree program, and first year nursing students in the two-year after-degree nursing program were invited to participate. Data from 166 students were included in the analysis (n = 166). RESULTS Based on the results of a paired t-test (p < 0.001 and an average score increase of 1.12 out of nine), we conclude that students' knowledge about cognitive impairment in older people increased following the e-learning activity. Students also offered qualitative feedback that identified the activity as both helpful and as an enjoyable way to learn and provided suggestions for improvement. CONCLUSIONS This e-learning activity was effective in helping students learn about how to work with older people experiencing cognitive impairment. This mode of learning might be useful for other difficult-to-teach content areas.

Abstract
The nurse-patient relationship involves complex attitudes and behaviours with ethical and deontological implications. It has been linked to improvements in patient health outcomes, although there is still no consensus in the scientific literature as to the definition and characterisation of the concept. This article aim to define the concept of the nurse-patient relationship. A concept analysis was conducted using the Walker and Avant method to identify the attributes defining the nurse-patient relationship. An integrative review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature databases. A review of the grey literature and other minor non-indexed publications on the topic was also conducted. A total of 36 articles were included in the review. A model case, a contrary case, a related case, and empirical references were produced to clarify the concept and identify its essential attributes. The concept is defined as a helping relationship involving interaction between different players. It is the basis of nursing care and is intended to meet the healthcare needs of the individual receiving this care. It is also viewed as an intervention in itself, requiring a specific training process just like any other nursing skill. The essential attributes of the relationship are empathy, presence, contact, authenticity, trust, and reciprocity. In conclusion, the nurse-patient relationship is a helping relationship established with the patient and/or their family based on interaction, communication, respect for ethical values, acceptance, and empathy in order to encourage introspection and behavioural change. Key components include communication, active listening, and respect. Bioethical values and confidentiality must also be present to ensure that the relationship is built on equality and intimacy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the self-care activities of elderly people with diabetes mellitus and its correlation with the nurse-patient interpersonal relationship. METHODS Cross-sectional quantitative study, with 144 elderly people followed up in Family Health Units, with data collected by the Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire and Interpersonal Relationship Questionnaire in Nursing Care, being analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS There was a greater accomplishment of the activities Take insulin injections as recommended (6.74), Take diabetes medications as recommended (6.55) and Take the indicated number of diabetes pills (6.52). The interpersonal relationship showed moderate effectiveness (80.6%). The correlation between self-care with diabetes and interpersonal relationships showed a positive and significant value in the dimension Specific feeding. CONCLUSION The effectiveness of the interpersonal relationship in nursing care resulted in greater compliance with activities related to specific food.

Abstract
BACKGROUND interpersonal communication in workplace is a problem that is faced by every employee. It is common in all industries and increasingly lethal. When they are unable to bear such overload of psychological pressure, they tend to suffer from anxiety, irritability, depression, and other psychological disorders and even mental diseases. It is urgent to explore how to help employees relieve psychological stress. OBJECTIVE the study aimed to analyze the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on workplace interpersonal stress, and provide help for professionals, especially newcomers, to relieve social pressure. METHODS 125 employees of Internet enterprises were given multi-baseline designed CBT (with baseline phase, treatment phase, and post-baseline phase). 43 subjects who did not finish the therapist program were set as the control group and 82 subjects who finished the treatment program were set as the experimental group. First, the differences of interpersonal stress of subjects with different gender, age, educational background, and monthly salary were analyzed. Then, social avoidance, distress, anxiety, and depression scores in baseline, treatment, and post-baseline periods were compared. Finally, the effects of gender, age, educational background, and monthly salary on social avoidance, distress, anxiety, and depression scores of the experimental group were analyzed by multiple regression. and the influence paths of the workplace interpersonal pressure was constructed. RESULTS Social avoidance, distress, anxiety, and depression of employees earning 10000 or more per month were less than those earning 10000 or more per month. Social avoidance, distress, anxiety, and depression of employees aged 30-50 were higher than those aged < 30 and > 50 (P < 0.05). Social avoidance, social distress, and depression in males were lower than those in females (P < 0.05). Social distress, anxiety, and depression of employees with master's degree or above were less than those with bachelor's degree or junior college degree. There were significant differences between the two groups in the post baseline phase. The monthly salary had the greatest influence on the social avoidance and distress, anxiety, and depression scores of the employees after treatment, with the path coefficients of -0.183, -0.169, and -0.184, respectively. CONCLUSIONS CBT can effectively relieve social avoidance and distress of workplace employees and can improve the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Educational level, age, and monthly salary had a certain influence on the improvement of social avoidance, distress, anxiety and depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare professionals may have certain psychological characteristics which contribute to increasing the quality of their professional performance. OBJECTIVE Study the effect that humanization of care and communication have on the burnout syndrome in nursing personal. METHODS The sample included a total of 330 Spanish nurses. Analytical instruments used were the Health Professional's Humanization Scale (HUMAS), Communication Styles Inventory Revised (CSI-R) and Brief Burnout Questionnaire Revised (CBB-R). RESULTS Two broad nursing profiles could be differentiated by their level of humanization (those with scores over the mean and those with scores below it in optimistic disposition, openness to sociability, emotional understanding, self-efficacy, and affection), where the largest group had the high scores. A communication repertoire based on verbal aggressiveness impacted indirectly on the effect of humanization on burnout, mainly in the personal impact component. We observed the relation of humanization profiles in nursing staff with the job dissatisfaction and burnout components. Besides that, some communication styles, verbal aggressiveness and questioningness, have an indirect effect on the relationship between humanization profiles and job dissatisfaction. CONCLUSIONS The results on the relationship between communication styles and burnout, and the mediator effect of communication styles on the relationship between humanization of care and burnout in nursing personnel are discussed.

Abstract
AIM To develop and psychometrically test the Interpersonal Geriatric care relationship tool. BACKGROUND The quality of nursing care is highly influenced by the quality of the interpersonal care relationship, yet there are no tools available that capture the conceptual breadth of the interpersonal care relationship. DESIGN Instrument development and psychometric testing of the content and construct validity, factor structure and reliability. METHODS A four-phased validation procedure was conducted (January 2016-April 2019): defining the construct measured by the tool, tool development, content validation and psychometric evaluation. RESULTS The 30-item Interpersonal Geriatric care relationship tool was subjected to exploratory factor analysis. Four components (humanization, attentiveness, interest and accessibility) were extracted. The tool demonstrated discriminating power and good internal consistency. Cronbach's alphas for the components ranged between 0.69 and 0.84. CONCLUSION The Interpersonal Geriatric care relationship tool is a valuable measure that can be used by scientists, educators and healthcare professionals to benchmark the interpersonal care relationship culture in hospitals and optimize the quality of care.

Abstract
Healthcare attention is sometimes considered purely technical, but communication has proven to be closely related to clinical results and patient satisfaction. Therefore, evaluation of communication in the scope of healthcare is a priority. The purpose of this study was to validate and adapt the Spanish version of the Communication Styles Inventory in a sample of nursing professionals. The sample was made up of 2313 nursing professionals selected at random from various medical centres in Spain, and is therefore a sample actively employed at the time data were acquired. We started out from the Communication Style Inventory, a questionnaire for evaluating the predominance of certain individual communication behaviours on six scales (expressiveness, preciseness, verbal aggressiveness, questioningness, emotionality and impression manipulativeness). Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the model proposed showed god fit indices. The reliability of the model shown by the Cronbach's alpha of α = 0.81 was adequate, and so was single-level and aggregate consistency. Finally, in the analysis of variance by type of contract, configural, metric and scalar invariance was acceptable, but not strict invariance. This instrument progresses in measuring non-technical attributes, such as communication styles, in nursing personnel.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present research was to investigate the obstacles, which prevent nurses being present with patients. BACKGROUND It is vital for nurses to be able to spend time with patients for an accurate assessment of patients' needs to take place and to allow patients to express their concerns. The factors, which prevent nurses spending time with patients, are still unclear. METHOD Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with thirty-five participants, including the nurses and physicians from educational hospitals of Tehran. The analysis was performed through the conventional content analysis. To achieve accuracy and trustworthiness of the data, the Lincoln and Guba criteria were used. RESULT The results of the study can be summarized as: "conflict between human considerations and bureaucratic structure," "failure to meet basic needs," "the personal and interpersonal aspects of caring" and "safety in caring context." CONCLUSION To ensure high-quality care, it is important to understand more fully the factors that prevent nurses spending time with patients. Interventions are needed to allow nurses to spend more time with the patients. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Health service managers should consider that the intrinsic motivation of nurses is to care for patients. They can increase the presence of nurses at patients' bedside and improve care quality by creating an attractive working environment, appreciating nurses' values, paying attention to their opinions and establishing professional communication based on mutual respect.

Abstract
The conversation strategies patients and clinicians use are important in determining patient satisfaction and adherence, and health outcomes following patient education-yet most studies are rife with surveys and interviews which often fail to account for real-time interaction. Conversation analysis (CA) is a powerful but underused sociological and linguistic technique aimed at understanding how interaction is accomplished in real-time. In the current manuscript, we provide a primer to CA in an effort to make the technique accessible to patient education researchers including; The history of CA, identifying and collecting data, transcription conventions, data analysis, and presenting the findings. Ultimately, this article provides an easily digestible demonstration of this analytic technique.

Abstract
Caring for people with dementia is a major challenge for relatives and society worldwide. Understanding the family caregivers' needs is crucial to promote their care-giving role during the disease trajectory. The aim of this mixed-method systematic review was to identify and synthetise the existing literature on the needs of family caregivers of people with dementia at home. PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and PsycINFO databases were systematically explored to find quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method studies published between 2009 and 2019. A total of 1,196 citations were retrieved and 34 studies were included in the review. The variety of interrelated needs emerged from studies has been summarised in four themes: (a) Being supported, (b) Receiving accessible and personalised information, (c) Being trained and educated to care for their beloved with dementia and (d) Finding a balance. Care-giving for individuals with dementia is an ever-changing process characterised by continuous adjustments to their needs. The majority of a family caregivers' needs are oriented towards receiving support, help in offering daily care and finding a balance between the care-giving role and their own personal needs. For family caregivers, receiving information is a priority to improve their knowledge and to develop coping abilities, care skills and strategies aimed at promoting a balance between care assistance duties and their own needs. They also need social, psychological and emotional support and access to flexible, tailored and timely formal care. Further studies are recommended to detect changes in family caregivers' needs throughout the disease progression in order to tailor formal care offered by social and healthcare services.

Abstract
Objective To explore how nurses in hospitals enact person‐centred fundamental care delivery. Background Effective person‐centred care is at the heart of fundamental nursing care, but it is deemed to be challenging in acute health care as there is a strong biomedical focus and most nurses are not trained in person‐centred fundamental care delivery. We therefore need to know if and how nurses currently incorporate a person‐centred approach during fundamental care. Design Focused ethnography approach. Methods Observations of 30 nurses on three different wards in two Dutch hospitals during their morning shift. Data were collected through passive observations and analysed using framework analysis based on the fundamentals of care framework. The COREQ guideline was used for reporting. Results Some nurses successfully integrate physical, psychosocial and relational elements of care in patient interactions. However, most nurses were observed to be mainly focused on physical care and did not take the time at their patients’ bedside to care for their psychosocial and relational needs. Many had a task‐focused way of working and communicating, seldom incorporating patients’ needs and experiences or discussing care planning, and often disturbing each other. Conclusions This study demonstrates that although some nurses manage to do so, person‐centred fundamental care delivery remains a challenge in hospitals, as most nurses have a task‐focused approach and therefore do not manage to integrate the physical, relational and physical elements of care. For further improvement, attention needs to be paid to integrated fundamental care and clinical reasoning skills. Relevance to clinical practice Although most nurses have a compassionate approach, this study shows that nurses do not incorporate psychosocial care or encourage patient participation when helping patients with their physical fundamental care needs, even though there seems to be sufficient opportunity for them to do so.
