Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a toxic plasticizer that is commonly used in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) blood bags. It is well known that DEHP can migrate from a medical device into the blood plasma. For safety reasons, pathogens in plasma must be inactivated; however, this process may increase DEHP migration. Here, we assessed the impact of illumination-based pathogen inactivation on the migration of DEHP from PVC bags into plasma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pairs of native PVC-DEHP plasma bags were pooled. Each pool was then split into a pathogen-inactivated bag and a control bag. After illumination, the plasma concentrations of DEHP and its main metabolite (mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, MEHP) in each bag were assayed and compared using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Concentrations were evaluated in repeated-measures, two-way analyses of variance. RESULTS The MEHP concentration was significantly associated with storage but not with illumination (p = 0.0001). The DEHP concentration stayed constant throughout the storage period. The DEHP equivalent concentration (corresponding to the overall plasticizer migration rate into plasma) was not significantly associated with illumination (p = 0.3) or storage (p = 0.09; mean ± standard deviation of the mean DEHP concentration for all conditions: 147.9 ± 11.3 μg/ml). CONCLUSION Illumination-based inactivation of pathogens in plasma did not increase the DEHP equivalent concentration, relative to control (non-inactivated) plasma.

Abstract
Ion-selective electrodes are at the forefront of research nowadays, with applications in healthcare, agriculture and water quality analysis among others. Despite multiple attempts of miniaturization of these polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel-based ion sensors, no ion-sensing devices with a thickness below the micrometer range, and operating using open circuit potential, have been developed so far. This work reports the causes of this thickness limitation in potassium-selective sensors. Highly homogeneous ion-sensing films were fabricated by a method based on aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition, leading to smooth surfaces with 27 ± 11 nm of roughness. Such homogeneity allowed the systematic study of the performance and ionic diffusion properties of the sensing films at sub-micrometer scales. Sensitivities below the Nernst response were found at low thicknesses. The nature of this reduction in sensitivity was studied, and a difference in the superficial and bulk compositions of the films was measured. An optimal configuration was found at 15 µm, with a good selectivity against Na+ (KK+, Na+ = -1.8) a limit of detection in the range of 10-4 M and esponse time below 40 s. The stability of sensors was improved by the deposition of protective layers, which expanded the lifespan of the ion sensors up to 5 weeks while preserving the Nernst sensitivity.

Abstract
Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a common plasticizer that is largely used for PVC blood bags. The migration of DEHP from medical devices into labile blood products (LBP) is a well-known situation. While DEHP has beneficial effects on the storage of red blood cells, it can have toxicological impact due to its potential reprotoxic effects (classified group 1B). Since July 1st, 2015, the French law prohibits the use of tubing made in DEHP-plasticized PVC in paediatric, neonatal and maternity wards. This provision, which could extend in several years more widely to medical devices used for drugs infusion, dialysis, feeding and blood bags, has led manufacturers to replace DEHP to alternative plasticizers such as diisononylcyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH). In this paper, a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS) method has been developed and validated for the determination of DEHP, DINCH and their corresponding monoester metabolites (MEHP and MINCH) in four labile blood products (LBP): whole blood (WB), red cells concentrate (RCC), plasma and platelet concentrate (PC). Due to strong contamination of blank LBP by DEHP because of its ubiquitous presence in working environment and despite the attention paid to avoid contamination of solvents and glassware, a trap chromatographic column was implemented between the solvent mixing chamber and the injector of the LC system. This set-up permitted to discriminate DEHP present in the sample to DEHP brought by the environmental contamination. In the optimized conditions, all compounds were separated in less than 10 min. The analytes were extracted from LBP samples using a liquid-liquid extraction. After optimization, recoveries were ranged from 47 to 96 %, depending on the analytes and the nature of LBP. Except for DEHP which exhibited RSD values of intermediate precision higher than 20 % at a concentration of 25 nM, all the precision results (repeatability and intermediate precision) were lower than 16 % and trueness values ranged from -16.2-19.8%. Using the validated method, the leachability of DEHP and DINCH from corresponding PVC-blood bags was investigated and the concentrations of their corresponding metabolites, MEHP and MINCH, were determined in whole blood, red cells concentrate, plasma and platelet concentrate.

Abstract
Several synthetic strategies based on the use of substituted aromatic and hetero-aromatic thiols for the covalent binding of modifier compounds to PVC are described. A variety of aliphatic alcohols and amines are linked to the aromatic or heteroaromatic rings via highly active functionalities as the isocyanate, acidchloride, or chlorosulfonyl group, and the three chlorine atoms of trichlorotriazine. The first three pathways lead to protected aromatic disulfides obtaining the substituted aromatic thiols by reduction as a final step of an unprecedented synthetic route. The second approach, in a novel, extremely efficient, and scalable process, uses the particular selectivity of trichlorotriazine to connect aliphatic amines, alcohols, and thiols to the ring and creates the thiol via nucleophilic substitution of a heteroaromatic halogen by thiourea and subsequent hydrolysis. Most of the modifier compounds were linked to the polymer chains with high degrees of anchorage. The presented approaches are highly versatile as different activations of aromatic and heteroaromatic rings are used. Therefore, many types of tailored functional nucleophiles may be anchored to PVC providing non-migrating materials with a broad range of applications and properties.

Abstract
PURPOSE Gamma ray irradiation is considered as an effective way to degrade diclofenac. However, due to the extensive coexisting substances in natural waters, the use of gamma ray irradiation for degradation is often influenced by multiple factors. The various factors that affect degradation efficiency, such as initial diclofenac concentration, initial pH, and the concentration of the additives including H(2)O(2) (·OH radical promoter), CH(3)OH (·OH radical scavenger), thiourea (·OH, H·, and e (aq) (-) scavenger), humic acid, and NO(3)(-) (coexisting substances in natural waters), are investigated. Furthermore, possible intermediate products are identified and corresponding transformation pathways are proposed. METHODS Degradation experiments were performed in a 50-mL airtight Pyrex bottle loaded with 25 mL of diclofenac solutions at various initial concentrations of 20.5, 30.4, and 50.1 mg L(-1). The radiation doses were controlled at 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 kGy. RESULTS Study results indicate that: (1) The degradation efficiency of diclofenac decreases with the increase of its initial concentration. (2) The degradation efficiency is higher under acidic conditions than in neutral and alkaline media. (3) The results obtained when H(2)O(2), CH(3)OH, and thiourea were added show that the degradation of diclofenac takes place via two pathways: oxidation by ·OH radicals and reduction by e (aq) (-) and H·. (4) The extensive coexisting substances in natural waters, such as humic acid and NO(3)(-), do not affect the degradation efficiency. Based on the identified intermediates, it is proposed that transformation pathways are initiated mainly by H·, e (aq) (-) , and ·OH. CONCLUSION Gamma ray irradiation effectively degrades diclofenac.

Abstract
Structural characterisation of 15 degradation products, formed upon di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) radiolysis, has been achieved using a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) coupling. The dissociation behaviour of protonated DBP was first established to be further used to characterise structural deviation in the degradation products. Based on accurate mass measurements, compounds shown by HPLC-MS analysis were all found to be DBP oxidation products, amongst which various sets of isomers could be distinguished. Collision-induced dissociation experiments performed on each electrosprayed molecule first allowed unambiguous definition of the location of the additional oxygen atoms; that is, in the alkyl branch or on the aromatic ring. Although location of the oxygen atom in the alkyl branches could not always be precisely determined, relative abundances of some product ions allowed oxygenated functions to be identified.
