A comprehensive review on recent progress in chitosan composite gels for biomedical uses

Chitosan (CS) composite gels have emerged as promising materials with diverse applications in biomedicine. This review provides a concise overview of recent advancements and key aspects in the development of CS composite gels. The unique properties of CS, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity, make it an attractive candidate for gel-based composites. Incorporating various additives, such as nanoparticles, polymers, and bioactive compounds, enhances the mechanical, thermal, and biological and other functional properties of CS gels. This review discusses the fabrication methods employed for CS composite gels, including blending and crosslinking, highlighting their influence on the final properties of the gels. Furthermore, the uses of CS composite gels in tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, and 3D printing highlight their potential to overcome a number of the present issues with drug delivery. The biocompatibility, antimicrobial properties, electroactive, thermosensitive and pH responsive behavior and controlled release capabilities of these gels make them particularly suitable for biomedical applications. In conclusion, CS composite gels represent a versatile class of materials with significant potential for a wide range of applications. Further research and development efforts are necessary to optimize their properties and expand their utility in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields.

Polymeric Membranes of Chitosan/Aloe Vera Gel Fabrication With Enhanced Swelling and Antimicrobial Properties for Biomedical Applications

Since ancient times, medicinal plants have been used as traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments. Aloe vera (AV) gel's therapeutic potential is one of the most effective approach in the fabrication of functional materials. The current study aimed to prepare the AV and chitosan (CS) membranes using various cross-linkers that were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Visible) techniques, as well as swelling ratio and antimicrobial studies. SEM analysis revealed that the membrane is porous, with interconnected pores. The inclusion of AV contents in the membrane improved thermal stability and crystallinity. The swelling ratio of the ACPG-3 membrane with a 2:1 CS to AV ratio was 366%. The membranes showed promising antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Pasteurella multocida strains. The findings revealed that polymeric CS/AV membranes have effective potential for use in the biomedical field.

Hybrid lignin particles via ion-crosslinked for selective removal of anionic dyes from water

Hybrid lignin (HL) particles were synthesized by compounding lignosulfonate and carboxylated chitosan through a simple ionic cross-linking method, and modifying by polyvinylpolyamine. Due to the synergistic effect of recombination and modification, the material exhibits excellent adsorption performance for anionic dyes in water. The structural characteristics and adsorptive behavior were systematically investigated. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model were revealed to well describe the sorption procedure of HL for anionic dyes. The results exhibited that the sorption capacities of HL on sodium indigo disulfonate and tartrazine were 1099.01 mg/g and 436.68 mg/g, respectively. Simultaneously, the adsorbent behaved no significant adsorption capacity loss after five adsorption-desorption cycles, indicating its superb stability and recyclability. Additionally, the HL exhibited excellent selective adsorption of anionic dyes form binary dye adsorption systems. The interaction forces between adsorbent and dye molecules, such as hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, electrostatic attraction and cation bonding bridge, are discussed in detail. The facile preparation process and superior dyes removal performance of HL were considered a potential adsorbent to remove anionic dyes from wastewater.

Production of Low Molecular Weight Chitosan Using a Combination of Weak Acid and Ultrasonication Methods

Low molecular weight chitosan (LMWC) has higher solubility and lower viscosity allowing for a wider pharmaceutical application compared to high molecular weight chitosan. LMWC chitosan can be obtained through a chitosan depolymerization process. This research aimed to produce LWMC using the combination of formic acid and ultrasonication method with the optimal condition of the depolymerization process. The chitosan depolymerization method was performed by combining formic acid and ultrasonication. The optimum conditions of the depolymerization process were obtained using the Box–Behnken design. The LMWC obtained from depolymerization was characterized to identify its yield, degree of deacetylation, the molecular weight, structure, morphology, thermal behavior, and crystallinity index. Results: The characterization results of LWMC obtained from the depolymerization process using the optimum conditions showed that the yield was 89.398%; the degree of deacetylation was 98.076%; the molecular weight was 32.814 kDa; there was no change in the chemical structure, LWMC had disorganized shape, there was no change in the thermal behavior, and LWMC had a more amorphous shape compared to native chitosan. Conclusion: The production of LWMC involving depolymerization in the presence of weak acid and ultrasonication can be developed by using the optimal condition of the depolymerization process.

Medical applications of biopolymer nanofibers

A wide array of biomedical applications, extending from the fabrication of implant materials to targeted drug delivery, can be attributed to polymers. The utilization of chemical monomers to form polymers, such as polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene, can provide high mechanical stability to them and they can be utilized for diverse electronic or thermal applications. However, certain chemical-based synthetic polymers are toxic to humans, animals, plants, and microbial cells. Thus, biopolymers have been introduced as an alternative to make them utilizable for biomedical applications. Even though biopolymers possess beneficial biomedical applications, they are not stable in biological fluids and exhibit toxicity in certain cases. Recent advances in nanotechnology have expanded its applicational significance in various domains, especially in the evolution of biopolymers to transform them into nanoparticles for numerous biomedical applications. In particular, biopolymers are fabricated as nanofibers to enhance their biological properties and to be utilized for exclusive biomedical applications. The aim of this review is to present an overview of various biopolymer nanofibers and their distinct synthesis approaches. In addition, the medical applications of biopolymer nanofibers, including antimicrobial agents, drug delivery systems, biosensor production, tissue engineering, and implant fabrication, are also discussed.

Enzymatic Active Release of Violacein Present in Nanostructured Lipid Carrier by Lipase Encapsulated in 3D-Bioprinted Chitosan-Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Matrix With Anticancer Activity

Violacein (Viol) is a bacterial purple water-insoluble pigment synthesized by Chromobacterium violaceum and other microorganisms that display many beneficial therapeutic properties including anticancer activity. Viol was produced, purified in our laboratory, and encapsulated in a nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC). The NLC is composed of the solid lipid myristyl myristate, an oily lipid mixture composed of capric and caprylic acids, and the surfactant poloxamer P188. Dormant lipase from Rhizomucor miehei was incorporated into the NLC-Viol to develop an active release system. The NLC particle size determined by dynamic light scattering brings around 150 nm particle size and ζ≈ −9.0 mV with or without lipase, but the incorporation of lipase increase the PdI from 0.241 to 0.319 (≈32%). For scaffold development, a 2.5 hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/chitosan ratio was obtained after optimization of a composite for extrusion in a 3D-bioprinter developed and constructed in our laboratory. Final Viol encapsulation efficiency in the printings was over 90%. Kinetic release of the biodye at pH = 7.4 from the mesh containing NLC-lipase showed roughly 20% Viol fast release than without the enzyme. However, both Viol kinetic releases displayed similar profiles at pH = 5.0, where the lipase is inactive. The kinetic release of Viol from the NLC-matrices was modeled and the best correlation was found with the Korsmeyer-Peppas model (R2 = 0.95) with n < 0.5 suggesting a Fickian release of Viol from the matrices. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of the NLC-meshes showed significant differences before and after Viol’s release. Also, the presence of lipase dramatically increased the gaps in the interchain mesh. XRD and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analyses of the NLC-meshes showed a decrease in the crystalline structure of the composites with the incorporation of the NLC, and the decrease of myristyl myristate in the mesh can be attributed to the lipase activity. TGA profiles of the NLC-meshes showed high thermal stability than the individual components. Cytotoxic studies in A549 and HCT-116 cancer cell lines revealed high anticancer activity of the matrix mediated by mucoadhesive chitosan, plus the biological synergistic activities of violacein and lipase.

Recovery, regeneration and sustainable management of spent adsorbents from wastewater treatment streams: A review

Adsorption is the most widely adopted, effective, and reliable treatment process for the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. One of the major issues with the adsorption-treatment process for the removal of contaminants from wastewater streams is the recovery and sustainable management of spent adsorbents. This review focuses on the effectiveness of emerging adsorbents and how the spent adsorbents could be recovered, regenerated, and further managed through reuse or safe disposal. The critical analysis of both conventional and emerging adsorbents on organic and inorganic contaminants in wastewater systems are evaluated. The various recovery and regeneration techniques of spent adsorbents including magnetic separation, filtration, thermal desorption and decomposition, chemical desorption, supercritical fluid desorption, advanced oxidation process and microbial assisted adsorbent regeneration are discussed in detail. The current challenges for the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents and the methodologies used for solving those problems are covered. The spent adsorbents are managed through regeneration for reuse (such as soil amendment, capacitor, catalyst/catalyst support) or safe disposal involving incineration and landfilling. Sustainable management of spent adsorbents, including processes involved in the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents for reuse, is examined in the context of resource recovery and circular economy. Finally, the review ends with the current drawbacks in the recovery and management of the spent adsorbents and the future directions for the economic and environmental feasibility of the system for industrial-scale application.

Cardiovascular diseases, including congenital and acquired cardiovascular diseases, impose a severe burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Although bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) therapy can be an effective therapeutic strategy for the heart disease, relatively low abundance, difficult accessibility, and small tissue volume hinder the clinical usefulness. Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) show similar potential with BMSCs to differentiate into lineages and tissues, such as smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, and adipocytes, with attractiveness of obtaining adipose tissue easily and repeatedly, and a simple separation procedure. Nanocomposite and bio-nanocomposite polymeric materials/membranes development in energy and medical sector: A review

Nanocomposite and bio-nanocomposite polymer materials/membranes have fascinated prominent attention in the energy as well as the medical sector. Their composites make them appropriate choices for various applications in the medical, energy and industrial sectors. Composite materials are subject of interest in the polymer industry. Different kinds of fillers, such as cellulose-based fillers, carbon black, clay nanomaterials, glass fibers, ceramic nanomaterial, carbon quantum dots, talc and many others have been incorporated into polymers to improve the quality of the final product. These results are dependent on a variety of factors; however, nanoparticle dispersion and distribution are major obstacles to fully using nanocomposites/bio-nanocomposites materials/membranes in various applications. This review examines the various nanocomposite and bio-nanocomposite materials applications in the energy and medical sector. The review also covers the variety of ways for increasing nanocomposite and bio-nanocomposite materials features, each with its own set of applications. Recent researches on composite materials have shown that polymeric nanocomposites and bio-nanocomposites are promising materials that have been intensively explored for many applications that include electronics, environmental remediation, energy, sensing (biosensor) and energy storage devices among other applications. In this review, we studied various nanocomposite and bio-nanocomposite materials, their controlling parameters to develop the product and examine their features and applications in the fields of energy and the medical sector.

Chitosan as possible inhibitory agents and delivery systems in leukemia

Leukemia is a lethal cancer in which white blood cells undergo proliferation and immature white blood cells are seen in the bloodstream. Without diagnosis and management in early stages, this type of cancer can be fatal. Changes in protooncogenic genes and microRNA genes are the most important factors involved in development of leukemia. At present, leukemia risk factors are not accurately identified, but some studies have pointed out factors that predispose to leukemia. Studies show that in the absence of genetic risk factors, leukemia can be prevented by reducing the exposure to risk factors of leukemia, including smoking, exposure to benzene compounds and high-dose radioactive or ionizing radiation. One of the most important treatments for leukemia is chemotherapy which has devastating side effects. Chemotherapy and medications used during treatment do not have a specific effect and destroy healthy cells besides leukemia cells. Despite the suppressing effect of chemotherapy against leukemia, patients undergoing chemotherapy have poor quality of life. So today, researchers are focusing on finding more safe and effective natural compounds and treatments for cancer, especially leukemia. Chitosan is a valuable natural compound that is biocompatible and non-toxic to healthy cells. Anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant effects are examples of chitosan biopolymer properties. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of this compound in medical treatments and the pharmaceutical industry. In this article, we take a look at the latest advances in the use of chitosan in the treatment and improvement of leukemia.

Facile fabrication and nanoscale assembly of polydopamine-functionalized, flexible chitosan films

Substrates that are simultaneously thin, strong, optically transparent, and biocompatible have diverse applications in a range of fundamental and applied fields. While nature-derived materials offer advantages of sustainability and inherent biocompatibility compared to synthetic polymers, their brittleness and swelling, as well as surface charge and chemical functionalization non-conducive to cell growth, can hinder widespread application. In this work, we discuss the fabrication and systematic characterization of polydopamine-coated chitosan thin films. Chitosan is a widely used, partially deacetylated form of chitin, derived from crustaceans and arthropods. Polydopamine (PDA) is derived from chemistries mimicking mussel foot adhesive proteins. A facile dip-coating process of thin and flexible, uncrosslinked chitosan films in aqueous dopamine solutions leads to dramatic changes in physical and chemical properties. We show how the PDA forms time-dependent assemblies on the film surfaces, affecting surface roughness, hydrophilicity, and mechanical strength. Coating the surface for even a few seconds provides functional changes to the films. Our results shows that the optimal coating time is on the order of few hours, whereby the films are optically transparent with excellent extensibility and Young’s modulus, while further coating reduces the benefits of this surface coating. These materials are biocompatible, serving as substrates for cell adhesion and growth while maintaining good viability. Overall, these findings give insight to the effects of PDA assembly on surfaces, and illustrate how a simple, quick, and robust bioinspired coating process can prime substrates for biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, biosensing, and wound healing.

"Size or mass" which plays a role? An investigation on the optical and ultrasonic properties of chitosan-lanthanide composites

In this present exploration, chitosan doped with different lanthanide oxides such as CeO₂, Nd₂O₃, Sm₂O₃, Eu₂O₃, Gd₂O₃, Dy₂O₃ and Ho₂O₃ has been prepared and its optical and thermodynamical properties were studied as a function of the ion size of the lanthanide element and its atomic masses. From the refractive index measurement, the space-filling factor and polarizability have been obtained. The propagation of ultrasonic waves like ultrasonic velocity and its derived quantities such as relaxation strength (r_s), adiabatic bulk modulus (K_s), acoustic impedance (Z) and adiabatic compressibility (β) have been obtained for different Chitosan-Lanthanide oxides (Ch-LnO). FTIR studies confirm the formation of different Ch-LnO. The variation of all the said properties with ion size is opposite to that of atomic mass due to lanthanide contraction. The results are presented and discussed in a detailed manner.

Chemical and physical Chitosan modification for designing enzymatic industrial biocatalysts: How to choose the best strategy?

Chitosan is one of the most abundant natural polymer worldwide, and due to its inherent characteristics, its use in industrial processes has been extensively explored. Because it is biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic, hydrophilic, cheap, and has good physical-chemical stability, it is seen as an excellent alternative for the replacement of synthetic materials in the search for more sustainable production methodologies. Thus being, a possible biotechnological application of Chitosan is as a direct support for enzyme immobilization. However, its applicability is quite specific, and to overcome this issue, alternative pretreatments are required, such as chemical and physical modifications to its structure, enabling its use in a wider array of applications. This review aims to present the topic in detail, by exploring and discussing methods of employment of Chitosan in enzymatic immobilization processes with various enzymes, presenting its advantages and disadvantages, as well as listing possible chemical modifications and combinations with other compounds for formulating an ideal support for this purpose. First, we will present Chitosan emphasizing its characteristics that allow its use as enzyme support. Furthermore, we will discuss possible physicochemical modifications that can be made to Chitosan, mentioning the improvements obtained in each process. These discussions will enable a comprehensive comparison between, and an informed choice of, the best technologies concerning enzyme immobilization and the application conditions of the biocatalyst.

Peptide-Chitosan Engineered Scaffolds for Biomedical Applications

Peptides are signaling epitopes that control many vital biological events. Increased specificity, synthetic feasibility with concomitant lack of toxicity, and immunogenicity make this emerging class of biomolecules suitable for different applications including therapeutics, diagnostics, and biomedical engineering. Further, chitosan, a naturally occurring linear polymer composed of d-glucosamine and N-acetyl-d-glucosamine units, possesses anti-microbial, muco-adhesive, and hemostatic properties along with excellent biocompatibility. As a result, chitosan finds application in drug/gene delivery, tissue engineering, and bioimaging. Despite these applications, chitosan demonstrates limited cell adhesion and lacks biosignaling. Therefore, peptide-chitosan hybrids have emerged as a new class of biomaterial with improved biosignaling properties and cell adhesion properties. As a result, recent studies encompass increased application of peptide-chitosan hybrids as composites or conjugates in drug delivery, cell therapy, and tissue engineering and as anti-microbial material. This review discusses the recent investigations involving chitosan-peptide materials and uncovers various aspects of these interesting hybrid materials for biomedical applications.

Electrophoretic Deposition and Characterization of Chitosan/Eudragit E 100 Coatings on Titanium Substrate

Currently, a significant problem is the production of coatings for titanium implants, which will be characterized by mechanical properties comparable to those of a human bone, high corrosion resistance, and low degradation rate in the body fluids. This paper aims to describe the properties of novel chitosan/Eudragit E 100 (chit/EE100) coatings deposited on titanium grade 2 substrate by the electrophoretic technique (EPD). The deposition was carried out for different parameters like the content of EE100, time of deposition, and applied voltage. The microstructure, surface roughness, chemical and phase composition, wettability, mechanical and electrochemical properties, and degradation rate at different pH were examined in comparison to chitosan coating without the addition of Eudragit E 100. The applied deposition parameters significantly influenced the morphology of the coatings. The chit/EE100 coating with the highest homogeneity was obtained for Eudragit content of 0.25 g, at 10 V, and for 1 min. Young’s modulus of this sample (24.77 ± 5.50 GPa) was most comparable to that of human cortical bone. The introduction of Eudragit E 100 into chitosan coatings significantly reduced their degradation rate in artificial saliva at neutral pH while maintaining high sensitivity to pH changes. The chit/EE100 coatings showed a slightly lower corrosion resistance compared to the chitosan coating, however, significantly exceeding the substrate corrosion resistance. All prepared coatings were characterized by hydrophilicity.

Effect of Genotype and Sex of the Host on the Bioavailability of Novel Albendazole Microcrystals Based on Chitosan and Cellulose Derivatives

Albendazole (ABZ), an anthelmintic compound widely used in the treatment of systemic nematode infections, is included in the list of class II drugs based on the Biopharmaceutical Classification System. ABZ has limited effectiveness due to its poor water solubility and consequent low bioavailability. Bioavailability of novel ABZ microcrystals based on hydroxyethylcellulose (S4A) or chitosan (S10A) was studied in male and female mice of two inbred lines, from the murine CBi-IGE model of trichinellosis, differing in susceptibility to this parasitosis (line CBi/L, resistant; line CBi+, susceptible). ABZ microcrystals were administered orally, and albendazole sulfoxide (ABZSO) was quantified in plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography. Mice given the microcrystals showed a significant increase in maximum plasmatic concentration (C_max) compared with those receiving pure ABZ (P < 0.01). In both genotypes, males and females given S4A had higher C_max than those receiving S10A (P < 0.05). CBi/L showed a greater C_max than CBi+ (significantly different only in females treated with S4A (P = 0.001)). CBi/L females attained a higher C_max than males (P < 0.05). No sex effect was observed for this variable in CBi+ (P > 0.05). The results of the pharmacokinetic analysis indicate that the microcrystalline formulations optimize ABZ bioavailability, both in males and females, S4A being the best system in CBi/L mice and S10A in CBi+. In summary, the microcrystals increased ABZ bioavailability, and under the conditions of this investigation, both host genotype and sex influenced the pharmacokinetic parameters measured.

A microfluidic approach to micromembrane synthesis for complex release profiles of nanocarriers

Physically crosslinked microscale biomembranes synthesized from pure chitosan are designed and demonstrated for pH-triggered release of embedded functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Nanoparticle-loaded membranes are formed in a microfluidic channel at the junction between accurately controlled co-flowing streams to achieve highly tuneable membrane properties. After formation, the loaded membranes remain stable until contact with physiological acidic conditions, resulting in controlled nanoparticle release. Furthermore, nanoparticle-loaded membranes with complex layered architectures are synthesized using different flow schemes, thus enabling customized nanoparticle release profiles. These novel materials are well-suited for integration within small medical devices as well as off-chip applications.

Biocompatible chitosan-carbon nanocage hybrids for sustained drug release and highly efficient laser and microwave co-irradiation induced cancer therapy

Graphitic carbon nanocages (GCNCs) are unique graphene-based nanomaterials that can be used for cancer photothermal therapy (PTT). However, low toxicity GCNC-based organic/inorganic hybrid biomaterials for microwave irradiation assisted PTT have not yet been reported. In the present study, chitosan (CS)-coated GCNCs (CS-GCNCs) loaded with 5-fluorouracil (5Fu) were used for cancer therapy when activated by 808-nm laser and microwave co-irradiation. The cytotoxicity of GCNCs was significantly reduced after coating with CS. For example, fewer cell-cycle defects were caused by CS-GCNCs in comparison with non-coated GCNCs. The release rate of 5Fu from CS-GCNCs was significantly slower than that of 5Fu from GCNCs, providing sustained release. The release rate could be accelerated by 808-nm laser and microwave co-irradiation. The 5Fu in CS-GCNCs retained high cancer cell killing bioactivity by enhancing the caspase-3 expression level. The cancer cell killing and tumor inhibition efficiencies of the 5Fu-loaded nanomaterials increased significantly under 808-nm laser and microwave co-irradiation. The strong cell killing and tumor ablation activities were due to the synergy of the enhanced GCNC thermal effect caused by laser and microwave co-irradiation and the chemotherapy of 5Fu. Our research opens a door for the development of drug-loaded GCNC-based nano-biomaterials for chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy with the assistance of microwave irradiation. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Graphitic carbon nanocages (GCNCs) are graphene-based nanomaterials that can be used for both drug loading and cancer photothermal therapy (PTT). Herein, we showed that chitosan (CS)-GCNCs hybrid biomaterials had very low cytotoxicity, high ability for loading drug, and exhibited sustained drug release. In particular, although low-power microwaves alone are unable to trigger cancer cell damage by GCNCs, the cell killing and mouse tumor inhibition efficiencies were significantly improved by near-infrared (NIR) laser and microwave co-irradiation compared with laser-triggered PTT alone. This combined use of laser and microwave co-irradiation promises essential therapeutic modality and opens a new avenue for PTT.

Human mesenchymal stem cells encapsulated-coacervated photoluminescent nanodots layered bioactive chitosan/collagen hydrogel matrices to indorse cardiac healing after acute myocardial infarction

In the present study, a combined biopolymeric conductive hydrogel was fabricated with conductive ultra-small graphene quantum dots as a soft injectable hydrogel for cardiac regenerations. The resultant hydrogel was combined with human Mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) to improved angiogenesis in cardiovascular tissues and decreasing cardiomyocyte necrosis of hydrogel treated acute-infarcted region has been greatly associated with the development of cardiac functions in MI models. The prepared graphene quantum dots and hydrogel groups was physico-chemically analyzed and confirmed the suitability of the materials for cardiac regeneration applications. The in vitro analyzes of hydrogels with hMSCs have established that enhanced cell survival rate, increased expressions of pro-inflammatory factors, pro-angiogenic factors and early cardiogenic markers. The results of in vivo myocardial observations and electrocardiography data demonstrated a favorable outcome of ejection fraction, fibrosis area, vessel density with reduced infarction size, implying that significant development of heart regenerative function after MI. This novel strategy of injectable hydrogel with hMSCs could be appropriate for the effective treatment of cardiac therapies after acute MI.

Biocompatible Polymers and their Potential Biomedical Applications: A Review

Background:

Biocompatible polymers are gaining great interest in the field of biomedical applications. The term biocompatibility refers to the suitability of a polymer to body and body fluids exposure. Biocompatible polymers are both synthetic (man-made) and natural and aid in the close vicinity of a living system or work in intimacy with living cells. These are used to gauge, treat, boost, or substitute any tissue, organ or function of the body. A biocompatible polymer improves body functions without altering its normal functioning and triggering allergies or other side effects. It encompasses advances in tissue culture, tissue scaffolds, implantation, artificial grafts, wound fabrication, controlled drug delivery, bone filler material, etc.

Objectives:

This review provides an insight into the remarkable contribution made by some well-known biopolymers such as polylactic-co-glycolic acid, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), polyLactic Acid, poly(3- hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), Chitosan and Cellulose in the therapeutic measure for many biomedical applications.

Methods: :

Various techniques and methods have made biopolymers more significant in the biomedical fields such as augmentation (replaced petroleum based polymers), film processing, injection modeling, blow molding techniques, controlled / implantable drug delivery devices, biological grafting, nano technology, tissue engineering etc.

Results:

The fore mentioned techniques and other advanced techniques have resulted in improved biocompatibility, nontoxicity, renewability, mild processing conditions, health condition, reduced immunological reactions and minimized side effects that would occur if synthetic polymers are used in a host cell.

Conclusion:

Biopolymers have brought effective and attainable targets in pharmaceutics and therapeutics. There are huge numbers of biopolymers reported in the literature that has been used effectively and extensively.

Interpolyelectrolyte complexes: advances and prospects of application

Advances in the development of water-soluble nonstoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes, which are characterized by high stability and can be involved in competitive interpolyelectrolyte reactions, are summarized and analyzed. The complexes remain stable over a wide range of external conditions (pH, ionic strength, temperature), but show a rapid, reversible and highly sensitive response to environmental changes outside this range by changing the phase state. The review considers methods of preparation and properties of nonstoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes formed by interactions between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. These reagents can be used for controlled modification of various surfaces, the preparation of soluble complexes functionalized by different molecules, the suppression and prevention of protein aggregation. The review briefly summarizes new types of soluble polyelectrolytes and polyelectrolyte complexes of different nature and with different structures, including biopolymers and dendrimers, suitable for solving problems in medicine and agricultural biotechnology. In order to evaluate the results achieved, there is a need to integrate and analyze the data on interpolyelectrolyte reactions, which are of most interest for a wide range of researchers.

Chitooligosaccharide inhibits RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis and ligation-induced periodontitis by suppressing MAPK/ c-fos/NFATC1 signaling

Considering the high rate of osteoclast-related diseases worldwide, research targeting osteoclast formation/function is crucial. In vitro, we demonstrated that chitooligosaccharide (CS) dramatically inhibited osteoclastogenesis as well as osteoclast function dose-dependently. CS suppressed osteoclast-specific genes expression during osteoclastogenesis. Furthermore, we found that CS attenuated receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL)-mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway involving p38, erk1/2, and jnk, leading to the reduced expression of c-fos and nuclear factor of activated T cells c1 (NFATc1) during osteoclast differentiation. In vivo, we found CS protected rats from periodontitis-induced alveolar bone loss by micro-computerized tomography and histological analysis. Overall, CS inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis and ligature-induced rat periodontitis model, probably by suppressing the MAPK/c-fos/NFATc1 signaling pathway. Therefore, CS may be a safe and promising treatment for osteoclast-related diseases.

Chitin Nanoforms Provide Mechanical and Topological Cues to Support Growth of Human Adipose Stem Cells in Chitosan Matrices

The precise role and value of incorporating nanoforms in biologically active matrices for medical applications is not known. In our current work, we incorporate two chitin nanoforms (i.e., nanocrystals or nanofibers) into Genipin-chitosan crosslinked matrices. These materials were studied as 2D films and 3D porous scaffolds to assess their potential as primary support and guidance for stem cells in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. The incorporation of either nanoforms in these 2D and 3D materials reveals significantly better swelling properties and robust mechanical performance in contrast to nanoform-free chitosan matrices. Furthermore, our data shows that these materials, in particular, incorporation of low concentration chitin nanoforms provide specific topological cues to guide the survival, adhesion, and proliferation of human adipose-derived stem cells. These findings demonstrate the potential of Genipin-chitosan crosslinked matrices impregnated with chitin nanoforms as value added materials for stem cell-based biomedical applications.

Concurrent reduction-adsorption of chromium using m-phenylenediamine-modified magnetic chitosan: kinetics, isotherm, and mechanism

Magnetic chitosan particles (MCS) were chemically grafted by m-phenylenediamine (mPD) forming a distinctive shell layer with abundant nitrogenous functional groups and used as an adsorbent for the effective removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. By interaction among functional groups in the facile oxidative polymerization process, the grafting of mPD and its polymers on MCS surface was innovatively realized. Through Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, etc., the chemical properties of MCS before and after modification were characterized and the concurrent reduction-adsorption mechanism in Cr(VI) adsorption by mPD-MCS was carefully analyzed. The maximal Cr(VI) removal performance of mPD-MCS reached 227.27 mg/g, which was significantly better than that of the original MCS. The analysis indicated that Cr(VI) could be efficiently reduced to Cr(III) and the removal of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) was through adsorption and chelation simultaneously by mPD-MCS. Results also indicated that the concurrent reduction-adsorption was enhanced by protonation of nitrogenous functional groups under low pH. The obtained results suggest that mPD-MCS has a good potential in removal and detoxication of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.
