Abstract
INTRODUCTION A diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma in adolescent patients is extremely rare. When an oral squamous cell carcinoma lesion arises near the teeth and/or periodontium, it can be easily misdiagnosed as an inflammatory condition of endodontic or periodontal origin. METHODS This is a case report of an otherwise healthy 14-year-old patient who was referred for endodontic evaluation and treatment of a soft-tissue swelling in the anterior maxilla. RESULTS The unexpected definitive diagnosis of invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma underscores the importance of proper diagnostic testing. CONCLUSIONS Accurate interpretation of pulp testing results, periapical and cone beam computed tomography imaging, timely biopsy, and prompt definitive treatment are critical when a lesion of nonodontogenic origin is suspected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral squamous cell carcinoma in minors is considered to be a distinct entity from OSCC in older patients, with an uncertain etiology. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection may trigger the initiation and promote the progression of OSCC, but these roles have not been firmly established.We aimed to explore the correlation between HPV infection and the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma in minors and know the characteristics of OSCC in young patients more thoroughly. METHOD From January 2013 to December 2022,6 cases of OSCC aged < 15 years were selected from the Department of Oral Pathology, Peking University School of Stomatology, Beijing, China. All cases underwent testing for high-risk HPV mRNA infection using the RNA scope technique, and immunohistochemical staining was performed to investigate the expression of p16, pan-cytokeratin (CK), CK5/6, CK7, CK8/18, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), p53, and Ki-67. Furthermore, we reviewed the literature on OSCC in patients aged < 21 years. CONCLUSIONS Minors OSCC is associated with HPV infection, and that p16 can serve as an immunohistochemical marker of HPV positivity.

Abstract
Respiratory complications are among the most common problems addressed in neonatology in the first hours after birth, whereas the risk of any cancer in the neonatal period is 28 per million. Sarcomas, malignant mesenchymal neoplasms, account for about 8% of all neoplasms in the neonatal period. We report on a male neonate born at 36 + 4/7 weeks of gestation, diagnosed with retropharyngeal synovial carcinoma. Ineffective respiratory movements and generalized cyanosis were the first symptoms to be noted. On the ultrasound examination of the neck, a tumor of the retropharyngeal space was exposed, then visualized by an MRI of the head and neck. The biopsy analysis revealed the diagnosis of an extremely rare tumor in a neonate. The location of its growth was atypical, contributing to a diagnostic challenge. The neoplasm was treated solely with chemotherapy concordantly with the CWS protocol, individually customized for our patient. Preterm birth, as in our case, 36 + 4/7 weeks of gestation, may imply a possible need for resuscitation or support in the transition period. Aggressive high-grade tumors of the head and neck region are locally invasive and prone to metastasize. However, prognosis in infants is hard to estimate, therefore both individualized treatment and multidisciplinary care should be tailored to the needs of the patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the signalment, staging, surgical treatment, and survival time of juvenile dogs treated surgically for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). STUDY DESIGN Retrospective study. ANIMALS OR SAMPLE POPULATION Twenty-five dogs, <2 years of age with OSCC treated with surgery. METHODS Cases were solicited from the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology. Data retrieved included sex, breed, age, weight, clinical signs, tumor location, preoperative diagnostics and staging, histopathological diagnosis with margin evaluation, disease-free interval, and date and cause of death. A minimum follow-up time of 3 months was required for inclusion. RESULTS Eighteen dogs were <12 months of age, and seven were <24 months. Various breeds were represented, with a mean body weight of 22.3 ± 14.4 kg. No dogs had evidence of metastatic disease prior to surgery. All dogs underwent partial maxillectomy or mandibulectomy. Histological margins were complete in 24 dogs and incomplete in one. No dogs had evidence of metastatic disease or tumor recurrence. The median follow-up time was 1556 days (92 to 4234 days). All dogs were alive at the last follow-up except for one documented death, due to dilated cardiomyopathy. Median disease-specific survival time was not reached. CONCLUSION The prognosis after wide surgical excision of OSCC in juvenile dogs was excellent. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE OSCC in juvenile dogs can be effectively treated with surgery alone.

Abstract
Pediatric hematologic malignancies present an elevated survival rate, and these survivors may experience long-term complications, including secondary malignancies. This case describes a 17-year-old female patient previously treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who developed a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC, T2N0M0) of the lateral border of the tongue diagnosed during dental follow-up 2 years and 9 months after the conclusion of ALL therapy (GBTLILLA99 protocol). The patient underwent exclusive surgical resection for the tongue SCC and is free of disease 11 years after the surgery. The current case report highlights the importance of monitoring the oral health of childhood cancer survivors. As part of a multidisciplinary team, our directives include counseling to avoid carcinogenic exposures.

Abstract
RATIONALE Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the most effective treatment for the majority of patients who have malignant haemolytic disease. Although the success rate of HSCT has increased, the increasing number of cases suffering from secondary solid malignancies after HSCT has attracted more interest recently. PATIENT CONCERNS A 16-year-old female patient from China presented with a crusty and painful lesion on the left buccal mucosa with a history of chronic graft-versus-host disease following allogeneic HSCT for acute myeloid leukaemia. DIAGNOSIS An incisional biopsy of the lesion showed stratified squamous epithelium mucosa with severe dysplasia (carcinoma in situ). Subsequently, a wide local excision was performed and histological examination revealed early infiltrating squamous epithelial mucosa (carcinoma in situ). INTERVENTIONS She was being treated in the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic with an incisional biopsy of the left buccal mucosa. She also received a wide local excision. OUTCOMES Follow-up for 4 years showed no recurrence. LESSONS This case helps raise awareness of the diagnosis of oral symptoms in young patients after HSCT. Due to the increasing application of HSCT, raising awareness in oral and dental physicians may be required to improve long-term clinical outcome of patients who underwent HSCT.

Abstract
Oral cancer in children is rare. Diagnosis may be delayed as a result of confusion with reactive lesions. Furthermore, cancer staging, with or without bony invasion, can be complicated during tooth eruption. Literature on pediatric oral cancers is lacking, making determination of the possible etiopathology difficult. We describe an exceptional case of a 5-year-old male child who presented with anterior maxillary gingival pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia that progressed to carcinoma cuniculatum with invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Because of the interesting timing of events, we hypothesize that human papillomavirus (HPV) inoculation through cutaneous squamous papilloma played a contributory role. A review of similar case reports in the literature is included. Biopsy of suspicious oral lesions should not be delayed because of the young age of the patient. Atypical hyperplasia should include squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the differential diagnoses. For surgical management of aggressive lesions during the mixed dentition, permanent successors should be included in the surgical margins to prevent recurrence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To discuss the presentation, evaluation, and management of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck in the pediatric population. METHODS Medical records of pediatric (≤20 years) patients treated for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck between 1996 and 2016 were reviewed. Data pertaining to clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, treatment plan, complications, recurrence, follow-up, or outcome were collected. RESULTS Eleven patients were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. Seven of these patients had medical histories significant for prior malignancies, immunosuppressant therapy, and/or genetic syndromes. Lesions were identified in the oral cavity (n = 5, 45.5%), lip/upper lip (n = 3, 27.3%), larynx (n = 2, 18.2%), and nasal cavity (n = 1, 9.1%). Tumors were most commonly treated with surgical excision alone. Three patients underwent irradiation (2 adjuvant and 1 without surgery) and chemotherapy (1 adjuvant, 1 neoadjuvant, and 1 without surgery). Of these patients, one reported complications of hearing loss, loss of dentition, and laryngeal stenosis. Two patients developed local recurrence at 1 month and 5 years post-operatively, respectively. One patient developed an orocutaneous fistula and subsequently died. No other complications were reported. Median follow-up time was 4.6 years (interquartile range: 2.4-8.4 years). Complications of radiation included: laryngeal stenosis, wound breakdown, and orocutaneous fistula. CONCLUSION Squamous cell carcinoma is rare in the pediatric population. Most frequently, it is associated with previous malignancies, immunosuppressant therapy, and/or genetic conditions. Complete surgical excision is recommended to obviate the need for radiation whenever possible.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pediatric head and neck Squamous cell carcinoma (PHNSCC) is a rare disease. The optimum treatment and outcome remains poorly understood because of rarity. METHODS We conducted an individual patient data analysis of PHNSCC. Two authors independently searched PubMed, google search, and Cochrane library for eligible studies using following search words: Pediatric Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma under age of 20, Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in young, PHNSCC till June 1, 2016 published in English language. RESULTS Total of 217 patients of PHNSCC were found in the literature. Median age among the cohort was 15 years (Range: 0-20 years) with a clear male preponderance. Oral cavity tumors were commonest 75 (70%) followed by laryngeal neoplasms 16(15%). Median disease free survival was 9 months (Range: 0-216 months). Median overall survival was 48 months (Range: 1-216 months). In univariate analysis treatment modality had significant impact on disease free survival (DFS). Whereas, patients treated with Surgery, Laryngeal primary had significantly better OS. Patients with associated fanconis anemia had significantly worse overall survival (OS). CONCLUSION PHNSCC is a rare disease with poorer outcome. Associated DNA defects leads to poorer OS. Patients treated with surgery alone or surgery followed by adjuvant radiation had better DFS and OS. Molecular profiling and personalized therapy may improve survival with limited toxicity.

Abstract
The purpose of this article was to draw attention to a periimplantitis-like clinical presentation of oral malignancy around dental implants, a phenomenon that may develop without any associated risk factors for oral cancer. Such a benign appearance of oral malignancy may lead to delay in the diagnosis and initiation of ensuing treatment. Therefore, chronic nonhealing inflammatory lesions around dental implants should be considered as highly suspicious.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Head and neck carcinoma is a very rare entity in pediatric age group. We here present the demography, treatment and outcome of 12 pediatric patients. METHODOLOGY We retrieved the treatment charts of pediatric patients with a diagnosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (PHNSCC). We also retrieved the published literature of pediatric HNSCC to present the treatment modalities being delivered across institutes. RESULTS We found 12 patients registered with a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Median age of the entire cohort was 17 years (Range: 8-20). Gender predilection was skewed in favor of male (male:female ratio-11:1). Oral tongue 3(25%) was the commonest sub site followed by soft palate 2(17%) gingiva 2 (17%), supra glottis larynx 2(17%) and one each of hard palate, buccal mucosa, floor of mouth (8.25% each). The most commonly employed modality of treatment was surgery in 6(50%). Radiation was used in seven cases: 7(Adjuvant-4, Radical-3). Two patients received radical chemo-radiation. Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy was used in two cases. Median follow up duration was 2 years (Range: 6 months to 8 years). One patient recurred 6 months post completion of radical chemo-radiation. The patient with recurrent disease had soft palate primary and had isolated local recurrence. The patient was salvaged with surgery and was disease free at the last follow up. At the last follow up all patients were surviving without disease. CONCLUSION The treatment and survival are not much different in pediatric patients compared to adult counterpart. However, in the absence of molecular profiling it is difficult to assess the cause of development of SCC in pediatric patients. A detailed study of underlying molecular pathway will further guide the future treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Carcinoma of the tongue is the most common intra-oral malignancy in Western countries. Incidence and mortality rates have increased in recent years, and survival has not improved. This study aimed to determine etiologic factors for tongue cancer with age-sex matched case-control data. MATERIALS AND METHODS 47 patients with carcinoma of the tongue referred to our oral medicine clinic between years 2005-2006 were analyzed and compared with control group data. The medical records , including family history of cancer, dental trauma, and history of abuse of alcohol and tobacco products was recorded for all subjects. Chi square comparison tests and linear regression analysis were performed using the SPSS program for statistics. RESULTS Patient and randomly selected control groups each consisted of 30 male and 17 female subjects with mean ages 53.2 (± 12.6) and 52.6 (± 11.5) years respectively. Smoking and alcohol abuse proportions were significantly higher in the patient group (p=0.0001, p<0.0001 respectively). Chronic mechanical trauma was observed in 44.7% of the patients and 17.0% of the control group (p=0.004). Similarly, family history of cancer of any type (for the first degree relatives) was found to be more common in the patient group (p=0.009). On regression analysis, alcohol abuse, family history of cancer, smoking, chronic mechanical traumas appeared as significant etiologic factors (p=0.0001). CONCLUSIONS We believe that field cancerization may become evident in oral and oropharyngeal mucosa with multiple steps of molecular changes starting from the first sign of dysplasia with chronic exposure to etiological factors. Chronic trauma cases need particular attention to search for very early signs of cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE Squamous cell carcinoma is a common entity among adult head and neck cancer patients, with many requiring reconstruction post resection. Conversely, this entity is rare among children with major reconstruction even more unique. This case and the concomitant review of literature highlight the intricacies of pediatric facial reconstruction. METHODS The case described is of a 6-year-old African-American boy with poor dentition and a painful, 1.5 cm epiphytic lesion on the alveolar ridge of the left mandible. Incisional biopsy and computerized tomography were employed to obtain diagnosis and extent of disease. Surgical resection and reconstruction followed. RESULTS Incisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Maxillofacial computerized tomography confirmed the extent of the mandibular lesion. After interdisciplinary discussion and weighing options with the family, a segmental mandibulectomy, neck dissection, and right fibula free flap reconstruction with titanium 2.0 mm metal plate fixation was performed. Re-examination post-operatively showed complete coverage of the defect and the ability to restore excised dentition. CONCLUSION Squamous cell carcinoma within the pediatric population occurs less often than sarcomas, but may necessitate major reconstruction. Without rigid reconstruction, contracture may result. The current consensus favors microvascular bone reconstruction. However, a lack of consensus exists regarding the timing of dental rehabilitation.

Abstract
Pediatric oral squamous cell carcinoma is an extremely rare occurence. In our report, we describe a 6-year-old White female with sensorineural hearing loss found to have a Connexin 26 gene mutation who developed a well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the hard palate with metastatic disease to submandibular lymph nodes and the lungs. This association emphasizes the need to consider Connexin 26 gene mutations in children who develop oral squamous cell carcinoma and to monitor for oral squamous cell carcinoma in children with Connexin 26 gene mutations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare outcomes of a pediatric cohort of patients compared with a matched cohort of adult patients, all diagnosed as having squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral tongue. Outcomes of oral cancer in pediatric patients have not been studied, to our knowledge. DESIGN Retrospective matched-pair cohort study. SETTING Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York. PATIENTS A total of 10 pediatric and 40 adult patients diagnosed as having SCC of the oral tongue. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and recurrence-free survival (RFS). RESULTS The 5-year OS was equivalent in the 2 groups: 70% in the pediatric group and 64% in the adult group (P = .97). The 5-year DSS was also equivalent: 80% in the pediatric group and 76% in the adult group (P = .90). The 5-year RFS was 70% in the pediatric group and 78% in the adult group (P = .54). CONCLUSIONS When pediatric and adult patients were matched for sex, tobacco use history, TNM status, surgical procedure, and adjuvant radiotherapy, outcomes for OS, DSS, and RFS were equivalent. Pediatric patients with SCC of the oral tongue should be treated similarly to adult patients.

Abstract
We report the case of an 11-year-old girl with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. This is a very rare disease in children with only a few cases reported in the literature. There is a great need to create awareness of the harmful and potentially lethal effects of chewing paan and betel nut not only in adults but also in children. Pediatricians and family physicians should also be aware of the possibility of this disease entity occurring at an earlier age so as to decrease delay in diagnosis and initiation of treatment.

Abstract
Oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) is uncommon in young patients and rare in the pediatric population. OCSCC is believed to behave aggressively in this age group, but the existing literature is limited to case reports. The objective of this study was to compare survival outcomes in pediatric and adult patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. We performed a population-based study of 54 pediatric (age < or = 20) and 22,162 adult cases of OCSCC, recorded in the SEER cancer registry. Overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox multivariable regression was used to control for covariates including gender, stage, histologic grade and treatment modality. Pediatric patients with OCSCC experienced significantly better 5 year DSS than adult patients (75.3% vs. 63.5%, p=0.02). Pediatric patients were also more likely to be female (37.0% vs. 31.7%, p=0.04) and to receive surgery (87.0% vs. 68.6%, p<0.001). When these factors, as well as non-significant differences in rates of metastases and histologic grade were controlled for on multivariable analysis, the pediatric and adult groups experienced equivalent DSS (p=0.64). Pediatric patients with OCSCC experience better survival than adult patients. When differences in patient, tumor and treatment-related characteristics are adjusted for, the two groups experience equivalent survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Describe a rare pediatric malignancy. Discuss the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic differences between squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the adult and pediatric population. STUDY DESIGN Case report including a detailed radiological and histopathologic analysis and review of the literature. METHODS A case report is described from a tertiary care university hospital. Histopathologic assessment and radiological details are reviewed. A literature review of the background, incidence, disease course, and treatment options are presented. RESULTS This case report presents a 6-year-old male with a 2-month history of an enlarging oral lesion. The patient denied dysphagia, pain, weight loss, bleeding, or loosening of the teeth. Biopsy demonstrated invasive, well-differentiated, exophytic squamous cell carcinoma with perineural and angiolymphatic invasion. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a 2.7 x 3.0 cm poorly marginated infiltrative mass involving the gingival aspect of the superior alveolar ridge and the adjacent bony marrow, primarily to the right of midline. Multiple small subcentimeter lymph nodes were also identified in the bilateral level II to V posterior cervical triangles bilaterally. CONCLUSIONS Pediatric SCC of the oral cavity is indeed a rare entity; however, its presence in the pediatric population should not be ignored. This case report describes the occurrence of SCC in the oral cavity of a 6-year-old male patient, the youngest case ever reported, and is a reminder that a multidisciplinary approach tailored to pediatric individuals is essential to obtain clear diagnoses and appropriate treatment plans.

Abstract
Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm of epithelium, most frequently occurring in intraoral tumors. In this article we describe a rarely reported, because the frequency of oral cancer in young people is extremely low, case of a 16-year-old Chinese girl with squamous cell carcinoma of anterior mandibular gingiva. The clinicopathologic features, etiology, clinical evaluation, management of squamous cell carcinoma of gingiva in young patients are discussed and the applicable literatures are reviewed.
