Abstract
Background As a tonal language, Mandarin Chinese has the following pronunciation elements for each syllable: the vowel, consonant, tone, duration, and intensity. Revealing the characteristics of auditory-related cortical processing of these different pronunciation elements is interesting. Methods A Mandarin pronunciation multifeature paradigm was designed, during which a standard stimulus and five different phonemic deviant stimuli were presented. The electroencephalogram (EEG) data were recorded with 256-electrode high-density EEG equipment. Time-domain and source localization analyses were conducted to demonstrate waveform characteristics and locate the sources of the cortical processing of mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a components following different stimuli. Results Vowel and consonant differences elicited distinct MMN and P3a components, but tone and duration differences did not. Intensity differences elicited distinct MMN components but not P3a components. For MMN and P3a components, the activated cortical areas were mainly in the frontal-temporal lobe. However, the regions and intensities of the cortical activation were significantly different among the components for the various deviant stimuli. The activated cortical areas of the MMN and P3a components elicited by vowels and consonants seemed to be larger and show more intense activation. Conclusion The auditory processing centers use different auditory-related cognitive resources when processing different Mandarin pronunciation elements. Vowels and consonants carry more information for speech comprehension; moreover, more neurons in the cortex may be involved in the recognition and cognitive processing of these elements.

Abstract
Introduction Fundamental frequency (F0) serves as the primary acoustic cue for Mandarin tone perception. Recent behavioral studies suggest that F0 information may be differently processed between Mandarin-speaking normal-hearing (NH) children and children with cochlear implants (CIs), which may partially explain the unsatisfactory outcome of lexical tone recognition using CIs with tonal language-oriented speech processing strategies. The aim of the current study was to provide neural evidence of F0 processing in Mandarin-speaking kindergarten-aged children with CIs compared with NH children. Methods Positive mismatch responses (p-MMRs) to the change of the two acoustic dimensions of F0 (F0 contour and F0 level) in Mandarin-speaking kindergarten-aged children with CIs (n = 19) and their age-matched NH peers (n = 21). Results The two groups of children did not show any significant difference on the mean amplitude of p-MMR to either F0 contour or F0 level change. While the CI group exhibited a significantly shorter peak latency of p-MMR to F0 contour change than to F0 level change, an opposite pattern was observed in the NH group. Discussion This study revealed a higher sensitivity to F0 contour change than to F0 level change in children with CIs, which was different from that in NH children. The neural evidence of discrepant F0 processing between children with CIs and NH children in this study was consistent with the previously reported behavioral findings and may serve as a reference for the development and improvement of tonal language-oriented speech processing strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE Congenital deafness not only delays auditory development but also hampers the ability to perceive nonspeech and speech signals. This study aimed to use auditory event-related potentials to explore the mismatch negativity (MMN), P3a, negative wave (Nc), and late discriminative negativity (LDN) components in children with and without hearing loss. METHOD Nineteen children with normal hearing (CNH) and 17 children with hearing loss (CHL) participated in this study. Two sets of pure tones (1 kHz vs. 1.1 kHz) and lexical tones (/ba2/ vs. /ba4/) were used to examine the auditory discrimination process. RESULTS MMN could be elicited by the pure tone and the lexical tone in both groups. The MMN latency elicited by nonspeech and speech was later in CHL than in CNH. Additionally, the MMN latency induced by speech occurred later in the left than in the right hemisphere in CNH, and the MMN amplitude elicited by speech in CHL produced a discriminative deficiency compared with that in CNH. Although the P3a latency and amplitude elicited by nonspeech in CHL and CNH were not significantly different, the Nc amplitude elicited by speech performed much lower in CHL than in CNH. Furthermore, the LDN latency elicited by nonspeech was later in CHL than in CNH, and the LDN amplitude induced by speech showed higher dominance in the right hemisphere in both CNH and CHL. CONCLUSION By incorporating nonspeech and speech auditory conditions, we propose using MMN, Nc, and LDN as potential indices to investigate auditory perception, memory, and discrimination.

Abstract
Introduction Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a promising instrument for the investigation of different auditory disorders, as it does not need behavioral responses. Objective To analyze the influence of the ear, gender and age variables in the MMN in children with typical development; and to compare the different measures of this potential, using verbal and nonverbal stimuli in the sample studied, providing reference values. Methods Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative study, with 23 children, aged from 5 to 11 years and 11 months old, divided by age group. Mismatch negativity was performed using verbal and nonverbal stimuli, and the data was analyzed by means of the statistical Student t -test. Results No significant differences were noted for the ear, gender and age variables in the MMN with both stimuli. There were significant differences for the latency, duration and area variables when the stimuli were compared. The reference values established for nonverbal stimuli were: latency 249.8 milliseconds, amplitude 2.28 µv, duration 82.97 milliseconds, and area 137.3 microvolt x microseconds (μVx μs); as for the verbal stimuli, they were: latency 265.3 milliseconds, amplitude - 2.82 µv, duration 110.5 milliseconds, and area 225.5 microvolt x microseconds (μVx μs). Conclusion The variables studied did not influence the recordings of the MMN. Latency, duration and area of the MMN with verbal stimuli were higher. It was possible to furnish reference values for children with typical development in the age group studied.

Abstract
Compared with children having normal hearing (NH), those with cochlear implants (CIs) perform poorly in spoken language comprehension which involves both low-level acoustic encoding and higher-level cognitive processing. Here, we performed an electroencephalography study to portray this brain dynamics of speech perception in CI children. We presented a Mandarin Chinese monosyllable or four-syllable idiom to CI and NH children, and infrequently varied its lexical tone to form a novel monosyllable or pseudo-idiom in an oddball paradigm. The tone contrast embedded in the monosyllables evoked similar mismatch negativities (MMNs) in CI and NH children at an early stage (~200 ms). However, the amplitude of the MMN evoked by the tone contrast in the idiom context was significantly lower in CI children than in NH children. Furthermore, robust late discriminative negativity (LDN) at a late stage (~500 ms) was found only in NH children, but not in CI children. The MMN and LDN findings indicate deficits of low-level acoustic encoding in a complex context (such as an idiom) and higher-level cognitive processing in CI children, respectively. Both deficient sensory and cognitive processing may contribute to the speech perception difficulties in CI children.

Abstract
The cochlear implant (CI) has an effective habilitation modality for hearing-impaired children by promoting sound perception, vocalization, and language ability. However, the major challenge that remained was the lack of assessment standards for pediatric CI users, especially prelingually deaf children, to evaluate hearing rehabilitation effectiveness. In the present study, we conducted an oddball paradigm with stimuli varying in pure-tone, syllable, and tonal sounds. After implantation, we utilized cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) and mismatch negativity (MMN) to obtain time-domain analysis; meanwhile, the source localization was investigated to obtain spatial accuracy of the plasticity in the auditory cortex. P1 started to emerge at the third month after implantation, but its peak level was not significant until the sixth month. The temporal lobe was activated between the third and sixth months after implantation. The MMN waveform was basically normal approximately after 12 months. These results suggest that the auditory system goes through a critical period of rapid development between three and six months and enters a maturation period after 12 months. This work indicates that CAEPs are more suitable for assessing the early auditory system reconstruction, while MMN performs better in evaluating the advanced auditory function. Furthermore, source localization has proven to be an efficient tool in exploring auditory cortex plasticity, especially for pediatric CI users.

Abstract
Hearing-impaired patients often encounter obstacles in communication. Not all of them wear hearing aids, citing issues with usage difficulty and discomfort in wearing. To overcome these difficulties, a new endeavor was started to improve sound intelligibility from the speaker's side. The present study objectively evaluated an intelligible-hearing (IH) loudspeaker by means of magnetoencephalography. Magnetic counterparts of mismatch negativity (MMNm) to pronunciation ('mi' and 'ni') were recorded and compared when they were transmitted from the IH loudspeaker and from a normal-hearing loudspeaker. On using the IH loudspeaker, the peak latency was found to be significantly shortened. In the case of hearing-impaired participants, marked MMNm responses were observed only when the IH loudspeaker was used. These findings suggest that improving sound intelligibility may be a supportive and rehabilitative approach for hearing-impaired patients.
